  • In this video, I talk about how swing instruction in baseball has structured its entire methodology to try to mitigate the effects of the off-speed pitch, and the way they have done that is to drastically decrease the amount of power you transfer to the ball. The funny thing is, the things they advocate, like staying back and throwing the hands, doesn't even solve the problem very well. So they are really just drastically decreasing power and not really helping you hit the off-speed pitch better.

Such a great point, of course we have to be able to hit breaking pitches, especially hanging breaking pitches.
However, gearing your entire hitting approach around hitting a pitchers best out pitch is what gets communicated to kids.
I heard Mark McGwire talk a few weeks ago. He was talking about pitch is his philosophy was before he checked his mechanics too much, he checked his recent pitch selection. He said if I was swinging at bad pitches then my mechanics likely didn’t look as good as they should.

Jaime I'm curious, you've talked about adjusting in the forward direction when you're early. What about adjusting in the other direction when you're late? If you're baseline contact position is really connected, what does an adjustment when you're late look like?

If you have to adjust in the other direction, you simply got beat by his fastball, which means you would have to time your stride earlier. This is why an extremely early stride can often be an effective swing change for hitters. If they were striding too late, there's really not much you can do to adjust except lean back and throw your hands and not get any body into the hit. Not an adjustment you want to make. This is why you always want to time your stride for the pitcher's fastest pitch.

@@theswingmechanic yeah that makes sense! "Take your stride early" captures it better than "get your foot down"
