      It is not that they don't like being called black. It's that in the US, when you say black you are usually talking about African Americans and a lot of afro latinos like to make the distinction. It doesn't mean they don't wanna be called black.

    • @AverageFrogVR
      @AverageFrogVR 6 лет назад +74

      *facepalm* You CLEARLY didn't understand my comment or understood what you wanted to understand. When I say "make the distinction" I am talking about the FACT that even though we are black, we are culturally different from African Americans and THERE IS A DIFFERENCE. In Latin America, we are not so race obsessed like you are in the US and we don't go around calling each other black. We identify by our country of origin in Latin America, not by our race. And even within our own countries, we identify by regions, by what part of the country you are from, not by our race. Race only comes to the picture when you are describing someone. Is there colorism? OF COURSE, but we don't focus so much on race like you guys do. When you are trying to make a distinction is as a matter of clarification, NOT because you are trying to distant yourself from being black as a race or to try to emulate whites...

      What is an African American?

  • @kiannacharisse
    @kiannacharisse 6 лет назад +2149

    When will the general public understand that Latina is not a race. It’s a culture. Go back and watch the show when the cast revealed their DNA tests on the show...Adrienne’s results were Native American, Iberian Peninsula, European, a little Asian and of course a dash of African 😉. That’s what most people who are ‘typical Latina’ are. They have mixed heritage and their culture, that they primarily identify with, is Latinx. So to sit here and ‘call people out’ who have African heritage who are also culturally Latinx is woefully hypocritical. Just because they don’t fit the box you have come to understand as being Latina does not mean they’re lying, bluffing or should be criticized for it. Seriously....people wake up and educate yourself.

    • @kiannacharisse
      @kiannacharisse 6 лет назад +29

      Ana Iberian Peninsula refers specifically to Spain and Portugal. It’s distinct from both the rest of Europe and Africa...separated by the Strait of Gibraltar. My point is that even in the same land mass there were different ethnic occupants that give way to how things are ‘classified’.

    • @kiannacharisse
      @kiannacharisse 6 лет назад +33

      Hannah Israel/12 Tribes did I ever say Hispanic is a race? Pretty sure I said it’s not...it’s a culture. The two are different. Race is man made in order to put groups of people in boxes. Latina is a culture and yes Latin is a language. Learn the difference. Also, Spanish is a Latin based language. Yes with colonization we lost a lot of our natural culture and language. Nobody is disputing that. All I’m saying is that for people to attack Amara because they can’t understand how she is ethnically from Africa and culturally Latina is insane.

      Latino is not a race but it is starting to be considered as one . Even in fbi reports and exams etc Latino is a race . It’s a huge debate that has been going on for years. I think us Latinos would like to have a category of our own . Never heard of a Latino introduce themselves white or black just Latino .

    • @angieencarnacion3244
      @angieencarnacion3244 6 лет назад +12

      Cathartic Psychic Healer I mean if people think Puerto Rican is a race then their obviously uneducated. Being Latino is a whole continent it’s different from being from a country and claiming that’s a race . Puerto Rican’s nationality is not even Puerto Rican their Americans so they are way more complicated . Race is your physical features right ? That’s what helps us pick a race . The reason their so much controversy around if Its not or is a race (Latino ) is because we don’t have a specific look . Some of us are white some of us are black . We come in different colors. If it weren’t for that we would have been considered a race if it Weren’t for the fact that we are mestizos. For example Asia is a continent . Asian is a race . Every country in Asia has their on ethnicity and culture . Same with Latinos . We are from Latin America every country in Latin America has different ethnicities and cultures . So theirs an argument for it is race and it’s not race . Hence why it’s so confusing and some see it as a race and others do not

As a Haitian-Puerto Rican who is dark skinned himself, I was always aware that a lot of people wouldn’t believe me when I say I was part Hispanic. So now I realize I can be a proud Afro-Latino and realize i dont have to to look light to be so either ❤️

I can see she dark yes but y use race as a story line to make a name for your self you aren't the first. Plenty latins of dark color that came before her especially Joseline Hernandez yet nobody everrr mentions that. 🤔 As haitiborn tht has to deal with similar but in reverse cuz I am on the lighter side and I have hair that grows fast n does weird stuff. Not 4c but 4"w" bc it really has a mind of it's own n ppl kept asking if I was mixed. If I came on the show n talking about I was born in haiti n I have European/native American/ African features that skipped everybody in my family but me as my storyline... I wouldn't last long.

    As an African, it's confusing to me why African Americans have a hard time understanding Afro Latino. Like y'all do realize y'all were probably on the same ship but got dropped of at different stops...? An African American is a person with roots in Africa but has American culture, speaks English, have been there for many generations likely.
    Same for Afro Latino, somebody with roots in Africa, who is from a Spanish speaking country, have Latino culture.
    No one gets confused when you say African American or tells you to pic a side... African or American

      Right! People Don't realize that over 90% of the slaves were taken elsewhere in the Caribbean and South America. Less than 10% were taken to America. More slaves were speaking Spanish, French, and Portuguese than English. We just don't see them much because they never had a large civil rights movement or push for black images in media in their countries. The only difference are the places we were dropped off and the languages our masters spoke.

      Salaan Sare it's because they relate the looks of a 'Latino' to Mexican-Americans, Puerto Ricans and Cubans, the oldest groups of 'Latinos' in the US. The image started with old school actors like Ricardo Montalban, Ricky Ricardo, Eric Estrada and singers like Gloria Estefan. The newer 'representatives' have been Ricky Martin, Jlo, Salma Hayek, Andy Garcia, etc...
      The presence of Afro-Latinos in the US (a larger presence, since there have been Afro-Cubans and Afro-PRs) is newer, so people need to flex their idea of what a 'Latino' is supposed to look like.

      City Nat I think afro Latinos were long here. I grew up around Puerto Rican kids who looked like me but for people who lived in less diverse areas their only concept of what “Latino” looks like is through Hollywood which generally stereotypes. For example I was a big Irene Cara fan as a kid and she had a successful career for awhile. I don’t think people realized she was Latina and came from a bilingual home. Actually Major League Baseball has been full of Latinos with African roots for a long time though.

    Omg how dense you have to be to not understand that just because you are black doesn't mean you can't be latino. Being latino literally means you have a mixed heritage. Many latinoamerican countries have african, indegenous and european roots. C'mon read a little about world history, not just your own ''american'' history.

      Facts,what I don't like of the most of the Latinos is their to racist knowing that they're a bit of everything. It's like saying your grand (×10) mother,example(dirty black) it's just stupid to be a latino and to be racist,but all the Latinos are'nt a bit African some are'nt African at all

      Miguel Plata you are exactly right BUT unfortunately dont ever have this discussion with a black person in public, some of us for some strange fucked up reason wanna claim any beautiful person in the world with Brown skin....ESPECIALLY black women, this just shows how deep rooted there hate is for themselves & why they hide behind 100% Indian grade hairweave & wigs & 3 inch long fake eyelashes.....Some of us as you can clearly see dont even acknowledge the other races that are mixed in her blood...Black women somehow think that if they can get the whole world to recognize her as ONLY black then in some MAGICAL WAY it makes themselves look better....SMFH....I agree with you 100% it's clearly evident that she is mixed & not even close to being 100% only black.

      Well said.. I'm black Dominican. I claim to be Dominican. I don't claim being either African or Spaniards even though my roots comes from both. Also, a HUGE misunderstanding of the word LATINO. People use this word to group Spanish speaking nations in the Americas when in fact, Latino is anyone whose language derives from Latin which is anything like French, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, etc. A more correct world for us should be Hispanic because of our ancestor's speaking language.

      Thats where you and Amara differs,she says she is black latina as in Afro latina and her Parents came from Dominicana and her father is black like her and her mother like Adrienne but a little brown but you said you are Dominicana and Spanish or African but we are talkinv about Race not nationality,its about being white black native or mixed of those 3 races do you get the difference?

    • @RealBadCharlie
      @RealBadCharlie 6 лет назад +9

      I know what's being discussed and I maintain my original point of afro-latino crap. There's no such thing as afro-latino. In fact, you don't understand the importance of nationality. Your nationality defines who you are more than race. Most people talk about race mostly because of lack of self-esteem. You should be proud of who you are whether you're black or white or brown or whatever the f*ck you are. One more thing, why do I only hear the word "afro"? How come I don't hear the word "euro"? Oh I know. That would be racist. This whole thing is so hypocrite and you'all should be ashamed.

      Because of a couple different reasons one is that they look at stereotypical what you supposed to look like in their eyes also because when they see Dominican Republic they don't see very many light skin poeple but this is no one's fault but TV that's like for example when they show the city of Detroit they show all black people and there's lots of people that live in Detroit from Latinos which people are surprised to hear, whites Indiana ,arabic ect. It's also a same that people look at your skin color and automatically put you in a category, and if you tell them any different from what their eyes can see you must be wrong about your own heritage it's sad to say poeple are something else

She's been a rising star since she was 12 . She is the best representation of black women in the western hemisphere. Shes more proud of her blackness than the majority of black women in the united states that strive for skin bleaching and Hair weaves.

    Not every dark sinned person will identify as Black. For me, ie a Nigerian person...My identity is first and foremost Nigerian, secondly, my ethnic group ie Igbo and Yoruba, my local governments etc...being labeled black is a foreign concept and it's not my identity. I am dark skinned but that is inconsequential, just as my hair and eye color. Americans would never understand because they label themselves as a color and that's what their whole world revolves around.

    • @newagemaeday5361
      @newagemaeday5361 6 лет назад +56

      @tosin Ojo I am an American black woman. You do not understand something so allow me to explain. You my friend are in your peoples original homeland. You KNOW your history and your people. There in Africa a great majority of people are brown to dark brown so your color is not a point as you ALL resemble each other ( not talking about colonizers that are left there) Here we were taken, through hundreds of years, our history and languages and place of origin were lost!!!! We can't say we are Nigerian etc, we don't know who the hell we are!! All we had in common was the color of our skin. also since our language was lost all we had was English, Here we were already given the name as "black" they thought nothing of us we were animals. no they weren't going to teach us history or give us a dignified name of a race etc. We didn't give ourselves that, it is what we were all called no mater what part of the planet we were deposited on. the name is black but said in many languages, since we speak English we use black! How messed up we are here in America is because of slavery and it's after effect so don't cast judgment on us as we do not have the same history only the same race which to the world is simply called BLACK! And nationality as you know this is a white country and they are the only ones recognized as simply American. since we are a mixed country they classify each group by their country or race if they have one then add American/ so everybody is second class American to white people. Again we were live stock so black is all we got until recently we have become African Americans and many blacks do not want to be called that, they choose to simply stick with black . I use either the point is I'm from African descent enough said when it comes to who I am.

    • @tosinojo7310
      @tosinojo7310 6 лет назад +17

      I understand why a lot of your identity revolves around the color of your skin...my point was that unlike you Many Americans don't seem to understand or fathom how someone that looks like them does not label themselves as black. They want everyone to value the same things they do..sorry I am not proud to be black...my skin protects me as it should and in return I take care of it. I cant be proud of something I didn't work for simple (to God be thaat glory *for the skin that is*)...maybe when I finally hit the gym and get that figure...then ill be proud of that accomplishment. you are correct, I know my people and there are a million things that divide us in my country...ethnicity being one. over 400 ethnic groups in Nigeria...vastly different cultures, looks, facial features...so worrying about color dost cut it.

    As a 67 year old Afro Latino of Puerto Rican ancestry, Amara La Negra is my hero. Due to ignorance, people think all Spanish speakers from Cuba, Puerto Rico, Mexico, South America, Central America, and the Dominican Republic are light skin or white like Jennifer Lopez, Ricky Martin, William Levy, Jencarlos Canela, Benicio del Toro, Andy Garcia, etc. As a Black man of Puerto Rican ancestry, when I speak Spanish, many Blacks, Whites, and some Latinos look at me as if I am from another planet.

    Why do African Americans get generalized for not knowing their history? Like all of us live in a big dumb bubble with no sense of reality. NOT true. A lot of us do know our history, stood up for our rights, had powerful leaders, and started ground breaking movements, and also paved the way for other races. But, we dont get props for that huh? We have done a lot. I know a lot about my history. And know, it's not a surprise that the slave ships dropped us off everywhere in the world. Including India, Asia, Latin America, Europe, etc, etc. Please stop taking the easy road by speaking on how American blacks act and think, because you don't know every American black to generalize us.

It seems like these people hold these views of us refuse to be corrected and they would rather just argue instead. They obviously know nothing about us and they get their Concepts from hearsay or American Media and everyone then becomes an expert on African American culture

      Nicole Ford I know this comment was made ages ago but THANK YOU SO MUCH for this statement. A vast Majority of White Americans know very little of their history, other than the slave trade. Many of them don't know their ancestors were slaves and suffered from oppression as well. Some Mexicans as well don'tknow they are the TRUE Americans, and what was taken from their ancestors. But everybody likes to think black Americans are the only ones who are ignorant. And don't get me started on that Indian, Pakistani nonsense smh.

    First, this chick looks like a black barbie doll. She is gorgeous. Other than her thickish figure and hair and her skin color her features look "latina". When I hear latino/latina I automatically think a mix of black , white spaniards, and native american/mexicans (I consider mexicans to be native americans). Some look more black some look more whitish but latina/latino always means a mix. I can see black in Jlo and in Sophia Veragra somewhere in their lineage, neither one of them looks "Caucasian" they both have light skin but you can see some african in them. It's just like many other cultures, darker skin is viewed as being inferior NOT necessarily ugly , but its the socio economic implications that come with the dark skin stereotype that people see that's why so many people in Asia, Africa and latin america favor lighter skin.

    • @yfnty8435
      @yfnty8435 3 года назад

      She is the indigenous Dominican not African , these are what the ancestors looked liked in the DR & in Mexico before colonization. All different shades of brown known as “black”. The Afro Latinos of today are the indigenous people of the Americas & the African Americans as well . Colonization is when the Europeans intermixed to create descendants of themselves from the Spaniards, English, & Siberian’s to get the modern day Hispanics, Natives Americans & “white” Americans they’re all Europeans decent. That’s exactly why they tell us to call our selves “Afro” & “African” so we don’t claim our indigenous birthrights they stole from our ancestors they enslaved that were already here in America. Our country/continent don’t make our pigment our genetics & DNA do . That’s just another lie they told for the Pan African propaganda. People all over the world had brown skin in every continent before colonization & the colonizers also called them “black” . That originally didn’t even mean African it just the depiction for skin tone & it’s still not black ⚫️🤦🏽‍♂️. Y’all have to do more research instead of just taking what the oppressor tells y’all in thinking every brown person is from Africa. That’s the agenda, brown is the indigenous of planet earth & the race is Negroid not black . Indigenous Africans & indigenous Americans are both Negroid but with two different ethnicities . Just like Bruce lee & Elon musk are both Caucasian but just two different ethnicities. U see there not the same . Americans & Africans aren’t the same people in ethnicity just race , just like a Caucasian Asian & a white American Same race different ethnicities
