James wanted this to be 100% real and authentic. This was the first time he'd sung it to his dad, who had only recently been diagnosed with stage 4 kidney disease and was not expected to survive, although they did eventually find a donor and he made it. Both James and his dad are former officers in the British military. First time I heard this was 3 days after my Dad passed away and it broke me I lost my Dad 5 years ago this August after he fell and hit his head sadly he didn't survive it caused a bleed on his brain I sadly never had the chance to tell him I loved him and that hurts but i know he is at peace now.

This song is so full of imagery... hard to disregard a song that talks about death of a loved one... When he SANG this version.. his father was still on the dying list.... so the emotions are genuine... as is the wealth of meanings behind the words...

My father died two weeks after an airline mistake allowed me to stop overnight to see him at the nursing home; he needed 24 hour care. The last words my father spoke to me were, "I've always loved you". I could not be there for him when he needed me but somehow this song makes me feel better for he and I talked like two men for hours that day; I was so very lucky in that it was one of his good days. Thank you for this so very much.

If you hate crying songs you might want to avoid The Girl That Never Was by James Blunt. That song can ruin you
for a week and it is autobiographical. But if your willing make sure you have a box of Kleenex.

James Blunt is a much derided singer here in the UK following on from his first smash hit "You're Beautiful", he has largely risen above this by displaying a wonderful, self mocking, sense of humour and, yes, being a damned fine song writer and performer. Both James and his father were serving officers in the British military, so it must have taken a high degree of courage to put such raw emotion on display in this video, especially coming from such a macho environment as the army. Another highly charged official video is "No Bravery", especially so with the horrors going on in the Middle East currently. This video is a record of his experience as an officer deployed in the Balkan War, some years ago now, it really is a devastating watch and you can almost see in James' eyes that he's re-living some of the atrocities he must have witnessed in that bloody conflict. How the hell he gets through the song without breaking down, I'll never know but, whatever, it's a Must Watch.

I heard James donated all the proceeds from this video to the UK charity 'Help For Heroes' who do so much wonderful work with and for ex-servicemen and women. This song of James Blunt’s, “Monsters” was a heartfelt tribute to his father. The emotional track reflects the deep bond between them and a touching farewell. In the music video for “Monsters,” James Blunt sings directly to the camera, his eyes welling up with tears...The video is so powerful because sitting beside James Blunt is his real-life dad, Colonel Charles Blount. who was a former cavalry officer, & battling stage 4 chronic kidney disease. The song captures the raw emotions of facing mortality and saying the things one wants to say to a loved one before it’s too late 💗 I can never get through this, without crying..........

That was the last time I saw him alive, came home to an empty house. First time I’ve seen this, and has brought tears to my eyes. If you haven’t said it for while , say it now. My father and I did not have a relationship after my parent's divorce when I was 10 years old. The truth is that he was terribly abusive. We had an opportunity to reconnect and mend the broken relationship when I was 25. Unfortunately, our last conversation during that brief window was heated, it'd be the last time we spoke. I regret that to this day. This song reflects the love between father and son I wish I experienced. I'm incredibly delighted for James and his father and jealous at the same time. The first time I heard this song was a few months after my father passed. Although we didn't see eye-to-eye on many things and our relationship was often strained, we grew closer in the years after my mom passed. Unfortunately, he died during the "pandemic" and I wasn't able to be with him at the end because of the nonsensical /inhumane covid restrictions put in place. Subsequently, I became very bitter and refused to let myself process the tremendous loss and associated grief...until I heard this song. Then the floodgates opened wide and I wept like I had never done before, for days afterwards. Thank you James...I believe you saved my life by helping me feel what I needed to feel and getting closure on this very difficult time.

Surprised there are no reactions to Jacob Collier who's a master of so many things but certainly vocal precision, range and phrasing with different ways to be bright or dark. "Moon River" has microntonal changes and is a good start but his version of "Bridge Over Troubled Waters" just came out and he doesn't even sing any lead on that one. Yebba, John Legend and Tori Kelly do.
If you want to see him play instruments then try All Night Long or Hideaway.
As for stage presence confidence... you should see his live concert improvised songs and crowd work. Phenomenal.

hello , i want to comment on the sentence you said , namely, what could have been. But it can still be that way, it only takes a joice! One decision to make contact with your dad. I lost mine couple of months ago. I want to strongly advice you to make that one decision. Many times its about putting things aside to make that joice! Those things can be : hatred, angryness, bitterness, not willing to forgive (while no men on earth is without sin/fault!) but also pride ! Hope you take the first step to a new and better relationship with your father now that its still possible, now that he is still alive ! Hope youll be inspired by my comment and make the right choice .

Seems that most of your videos focus on singer's stage presence. If you're interested in dance drama, I really want to share an impressive video with you.

I just heard the part about your father. I hope it is okay but this old man (67) is sending you a huge hug.

I'm going to be the one that says it though, women will never understand how this song actually hits.
As men, we are still told to not show emotion, to not cry, to be strong.. always.
To hear a man sing like this, about a subject that is so dear to so many men though most of us will not admit it, is something else..

If this song doesn’t make you cry and want to give your father a hug, then you have the emotions of a serial killer

I love this song, barely know my dad to. I think the sadness is just wanting a relationship like this.

For many of us, we never had the chance to say goodbye to our father or mother because of a devastating heart failure or an accidental death… this is what my family had to deal with 2 years in a row, first our father and then our mother. Watching this video makes me realise how hard it must be to see our father or mother going away slowly because of sickness but how courageous are these people to evolve around a known fatality. This song makes me cry every time I hear it. The lyrics are so powerful and true.

Think If James never wrote that song it would not get around the world to reach that donor. So he saved his father.
