Very interesting to see this today. We've come quite far in terms of technology since the eighties, the part with the older Granada following the prototype while testing was funny to see. The crash test was actually way better than I expected, although of course the lack of airbags is not acceptable anymore. Amazing how high-tech this car looks on this documentary, you can see how advanced it was back in its' day. I look a little bit differently at mine now that I've seen this documentary. All I can say is a good Scorpio rides so nicely and is so comfortable, I don't ever feel the desire to swap into a new luxury vehicle in 2019. Parts are dirt cheap, too.
I work at a very large German car manufacturer and at least the design sketching and clay modeling is still done exactly like this today - you cannot replace craftsmanship with computers! Awesome insight, thanks for the upload!
Awesome documentary! I remember the Scorpio. Here in America, it was called the Merkur Scorpio, and looking at it, it wasn't quite as attractive as the European version.
A massive jump from the boxy design of the previous model. Even the jags, bmws and mercs of the 80s weren't close to the curves and airiness of the granada until the early 90s. No car in its class could combine an auto box with a petrol engine that did 39mpg at 75mph with 45mph in reserve like this. Its funny to note its high speed efficiency isn't even bettered by the fiesta 1.0 of the same era!
Ahead of it's time apart from those crappy old pushrod engines that V6 was so unrefined and vibrated liked an overloaded washing machine over 5rpm the BMW inline 6's infinitely smoother shame ford didn't do something about the engines until later when got Cosworth involved with the 24v v6
Scorpio mk1 HATE side wind. i have driven them for 25 years and still do and side wind is something i watch out for in A Scorpio. lol. they cant have tested it for it, its terrible 😛I am now positive too..... lowering it/them/he/she/They, not hiv. It might help the side wind problem.
Great video of the 1985 Granada/Scorpio development lovely hatchback design

I would have thought they'd use 3D printers these days.
It was really interesting watching him sketch out the design of the car.

Great film although it's a bit tedious in places. Always liked the Scorpio / Granada Mk3. Do you have Part 2?

Нико у меня два таких шедевра. 2.0 на ручке для работы и 2.9 на автомате для души. Даже смешно менять их на овощи!
@ROVR Is there a documentary like this for the Volvo P2 V70?
Nice, but will also part 2?
