Every car on this list is just one motor swap away from being the total package, and that means they are overlooked, underloved and a great value! If you think there might be some other bangers I missed, lay em on me in the comments!

RX8 basically shares the front suspension/subframe with the NC MX5. If you wanted, you can bolt up the MX-5 subframe and trans, and put in a Ford duratec 2.5L out of a Fusion or Mazda6, turbo, and make 300whp on junkyard parts.

I think a Porsche 944 could be a good contender. They are still dirt cheap and a few companies make decent LS swap kits.

    • @ZeGermanHam

Doesn't the fact that they use a transaxle rather than a standard transmission make swapping them more difficult, though?

@@benkirkpatrick5278 Yeah, I sold my 944 last year after deciding I wasn't up to swapping it, but the 944 Turbo transaxles are getting pretty thin on the ground and even an original LS1 with only 350 hp will break the stock 944 transaxle without much difficulty.

nice swap, but that Buick Y6 is the same as the GN block it just needs an oil hole drilled in the front. 600 hp capacity, enough most people can't even put it to the ground. but a 454 will make that power and last longer for less $$ :)

Tony, I just recently picked up a Pontiac Solstice, from 06-10. Saturn Sky is same as well. Minor differences between em, both come with either a 2.4 ecotec NA or 2.0 Turbo motor, auto or manual. For about 5-6k its an easy LS swap and then basically a smaller corvette. Its a parts bin car, so its got a C6 vette steering wheel.
One drawback is the wheels, high offset weird bolt pattern, 5x110.

    • @StayTunedTA

Malibu Cobalt motor, Colorado trans, caddy rear diff. Literally lol.
Also if you can find a Z0K(option, check inner side of glovebox lid) solstice, its kinda the "race prepped" one. No AC, manual locks and windows, only in a stick.

Just bought an 06 RX8 for the same reasons you mentioned. The sad part is the rotary engine is actually pretty good in a car this size and mass. I get the want for more horsepower and torque, but I also think I get what Mazda's vision was for this car. So far I really like it as it is. That doesn't mean it won't see pistons and camshafts in its future.

Spot on! Reasons why the Oldsmobile Cutlass is on the list include that they were the top selling car several years (some in a row!) in the late 70s and early 80s, which means there are still a lot of them out there, which makes them cheaper, easier to find, and a better selection than the other G bodies. Many came with Buick V6s which also keeps the price down. Happy car hunting!

LS engine in a Porsche 944. Not a tough swap, with tons of aftermarket support, and one of the best chassis of the '80's and early'90's. They won practically every 'Best Handling Car' test they ever were considered for. Honda Prelude with a K-motor swap would be sick, too. Not sure if that's been done, or how doable it is. Another brilliant chassis, though.

For engine swaps, I think there’s also plenty of small block chevys out there for dirt cheap. Might not be as powerful as the LS, but you don’t need all the computer gadgets to get it running. A carb and a few simple wires to run ignition and your off and blazing tires.

    • @NBSV1
      @NBSV1 2 года назад

You can build a regular small block to 400hp or so for cheap and easy. There’s so many used parts out there because they were the go to for so long.
The LS got popular since it was modern and starts off with more power than a stock old small block. And, with the fuel injection the engine ends up shorter than a carb on top of a decent intake. So it fits into stuff easier.

I agree with all of Tony's picks! My own recommendation for a great swap car would be the Chevrolet Cavalier and Pontiac Sunfire. SUPER cheap (like five hundred bucks cheap) easy to find, and a Quad 4 will bolt right in. If that's a bit too mild, a 3.8 Buick V6 will fit in the front easily. I agree that FWD isn't great, but if you're aiming for a dumb fun 300hp car to trash around they're pretty good. Personally, nothing is more fun than a car you don't have to care about.

I think regular cab Colorados are an AWESOME swap candidate. You can even do it with 100% factory stuff if you want to, because they made both two and four wheel drive Colorados with all aluminum 5.3L 4th-gen LS V8s (I have a stock-ish 2012 extended cab Z71 4WD with factory 4.10s and a G80 and a pretty hopped up TR6060-swapped extended cab ZQ8 2WD with 3.73s and a Truetrac), but only in extended and crew cab automatic configurations. I fully intend to put all the goodies from my ZQ8 in a base regular cab truck one day when I have a place to do it.
With you on the RX-8, too. I got a chance to ride in and drive one with a bone-stock L33 aluminum 5.3L truck motor in it, and it was an absolute animal and one of the best-handling, easiest-to-drive-fast cars I've ever experienced.

Quite a few options for the RX8, I own 2 of them! One non runner, just trying to decide which engine to swap into it. I'm not a fan of an LS due to the weight throwing off the 50/50 balance. LFX V6 out of a camaro or K series have my vote as of right now. You should definitely get another one as I still believe it is by far the most underrated chassis on the market. Best brakes and handling money can buy! I still run my red one with it's original engine at over 82k miles and it's going strong. Just have to know how to maintain it, keep it lubricated, keep temps down, and beat it like it owes you money!

If you really want something that fits in everything look at the small Ford Windsors. The 260/289/302 block is tiny and will fit well in just about anything. Even small English roadsters 😁

It's so funny how in the 80's & 90's I didn't think of the G body at all except for the Gran National's because they were so much heavier than many other options but hot rodders will do what they do motor swap and lighten, the G bodies all had certain trims that looked great the Cutlass did look good. I did smoke a 84 Hurst/Olds in the late 80's with my 65 Mustang but my car had more mods better power to weight. I would love to see you do an eng. swap on a RX8.

Might I add a z31 Nissan 300zx. That car can be had for relatively cheap. You can beef up the vg30 that's in it but a vg33 is almost a direct swap or use pretty much any swap motor you can think of since the engine bay is both pretty wide and long. It handle great and has a lot of cool gizmos like electronic suspension, fully adjustable seats, pop up headlights, ect. Only real downside is the suspension is similar to the s130 280zx so getting coil overs are either quite expensive or will have to be modified from an s13 kit

I'd absolutely love to have a BRZ or FRS. Awesome little cars, they look like incredible fun. I didn't know you could put an LS into it, which would make for an insane ride. Corvette without Corvette money? I also like the GM A and G bodies a lot. RX8 with an LS? Wow, that would be impressive. I remember when they were racing those things on the road courses. It's the only thing I've ever heard that was louder and more obnoxious-sounding than the jet drier.

One note on the Oldsmobile G-body: Going by factory specs, the Oldsmobile Rocket 350 was loads better that that anemic 307 and it would just bolt right in, no mods whatsoever. The Rocket 350 was more powerful than it's Chevy counterpart from the get-go!

    • @albertgaspar627
      @albertgaspar627 2 года назад

well, the Olds 350 had more potential with its bigger bore and 6 inch connecting rod, but the mouse made 375 hp and I don't remember a W31 making that stock. That said, i'm surprised he mentioned the G body after saying he wasn't going to count cars that came with small blocks--g bodies had 305s and i've seen my share of Cutlasses with mice under the hood. Even the 4.3 V6 seems to be up to host its engine mounts and the gas tank is set up for EFI.

Another honorable mention is our 2012 Jeep Patriot with a 2.4L 4 cylinder and it's just gutless man, I mean our Patriot (named Pebbles) just look so doggone cute and its all blacked out like a mini Range Rover not to mention practical as well it just needs some horsepower like it definitely needs either a 3.6L Penastar V6 out of a Dodge Grand Caravan or a 3.2L Penastar V6 out of a 2014 Jeep Cherokee Trail Hawk.

Along with the SC300, the SC400 has potential. They throw turbos on that engine in Australia in lots of cars. They 4.0 liter V8 in the SC400 is related to the 4.7 liter V8 in your Land Crusier. They are tough and reliable, you can look to the Aussie for all the know how to make those motors scream.

This a vid I’m gunna save for a future project.. I also think, as part of a list would be a late model Mazda Miata. 400 horsepower 302 and make it look like and handle like a Shelby Cobra. Great info 🍻👍

  • @button-puncher

Dang it Tony! Don't take about the RX-8... because I want one. :) I want an '08-09 lapis blue one SO bad. (Like the one you showed.)
BTW, if you want a sleeper that's a riot, get a Chevy Astro or GMC Safari minivan. Vortec 5700 drops right in. You just need motor mounts and to add two extra wires for the extra injectors. LS swap is an option but it's alot more work. The Vortec (SBC), all the accessories swap right over from the stock V6. 4L60 can be built up. Throw in an Econoline E-150/250/350 9.75" rear end and you're done. OK, a turbo for 500-600HP and you're done. :D

I would like to put some honorable mentions ....
90s Ford Thunderbirds/Cougars/Mark VIIIs for a modern-ish muscle car. Heck, someone has even put a 2JZ in one.
Teslas - Ok, a lot of work, but once that battery dies you can pick them up cheap.(I think these will be more and more common)
Pontiac Solstice/Saturn Sky - A bit on the pricer side. But there is potential there.
And with the most potential on my list ....
The Chrysler Crossfire. Great platform, and a fairly easy swap with an AMG 5.5l. Also people swap in the Hemi's as well (which are pretty dirt cheap). If I did not live in California, this would definitely be my next project.

I think a K swapped FRS would be a really fun car
Yes on the Olds G body. When I street raced in the early 90s a guy ran one with a 455 and a 4 speed and it was a beast
Hmmm you really got me thinking on the RX8, cut up into a back halved drag n drive, no prep , ls turbo or k24 turbo powered , drag radial, street bruiser.

  • @dilsher12
