- As Lebanon grapples with a deepening economic crisis, fuel, medicine and food are becoming increasingly scarce. Why and what’s happening? Please subscribe HERE bit.ly/1rbfUog
The country is now in a state of collapse - fuel shortages, power cuts, bare shelves and a plummeting currency. It is a financial crisis with deep roots in a fundamentally flawed political system.
Last year saw the mass resignation of the entire cabinet after the explosion at a port that killed more than two hundred. It was later discovered a storage facility had been holding dangerous chemicals that no one had bothered to move.
The BBC’s Jean Mackenzie reports from and asks how the country can get back to its previous life - booming with optimism, tourism, and confidence.

I’m Lebanese. It’s been a few months since this was posted. We need help. I’m writing this with tears in my eyes. I’m 14 and I have no future. “Will I be able to go to school?” “Will I have enough money for food?” This is a cry for help. Please help us. Please.
Crazy how little coverage this has received. Hope the situation improves for the people of Lebanon
Yes, it's very weird. Since the blast, we hear nothing in the news in Poland, that the situation is so bad.
Actually, we hear lots. We just dont hear much from the Lebanese government. Can the people form non-regigous government?
Because every other countrys political parties are on the same trajectory of corruption & it shows you a glimpse of the future
It's true, I had no idea things were so bad in Lebanon
@@Steamerbeen yeah you're right, a major story floats to the surface in pretty much every country from time to time. But I feel something has changed.
Africa suffers food shortages, panic protests and looting.
China suffers massive food shortages, due to relying on sea food in over 30%, they apparently exhausted their waters, now sending big fleets of fishing boats to other countries shores, with trackers switched off. Happening for months now, they even raid USA and Africa.
Severe droughts and massive fires in Turkey and many other countries that will lead to food supply chains being broken.
Only thing we hear is flood in Germany and Belgium, fires in California.
Only way I know is watching too much YT. It's like they don't want us to know, Earth is actually on the brink already.
I'm sure I already forgot few of those really worrying news.
One cannot fathom how corruption and mismanagement can systematically plunge a state into darkness! How could politicians be this merciless and ferocious! How could they push their motherland towards total annihilation! These soulless and vicious businessmen have reduced Lebanon to nothing and have abandoned Lebanese in intense crisis!

If you've never visited a third world country, you have no idea about the real horrors of living in one.
I pray for the people of Lebanon, that they will see better days in time to come.
I also pray for my country Sri Lanka, that it doesn't get this bad, because clearly we too are heading in this direction.
Yes machan
The scary thing is, some western countries could even head this way in future. The sheer amount of corruption, the centralisation of power and money in a tiny elite, growing gap between rich and poor, tribalism in politics and identity groups - these are serious things happening rn. I think we’re going down this route in the next 20-30 years ourselves.

They suffered a lot!!!!! It’s enouggghhh
Whenever I hear someone saying "it's enough" in that context, I always remember the Palestinians. It can be real bad, for a very long time. And it breaks my heart :c
I lived in that place from 2016 to 2018. The gap between the rich and poor back then was so astonishing. People living beyond their means. Pride is really high. Everyone is in debt and with nothing to sell or produce. Religion, politics and every other sector or industry are corrupt to the core. Everything is over valued and people are ok with that. Actually, you would be shamed culturally if you want to live within your means.
Lebanese Pride and Arrogance is the worst I've ever seen. May Allah help them.
Great comment. The last sentence especially, is very true and not just of lebanese people. There is great pressure to consume and to show off, while being frugal and sensible is looked down upon.
The one's that I have met, with a few exceptions, are the most boastful of showoffs, with an overblown opinion about themselves and their country.
Problem shared by all Muslim countries
I agree! they have a huge ego and a short tunnel vision add to that the lack of loyalty to their other countryman from any other sect, racism, cruelty and human trafficking of African and Asian workers. Also they’re very short tempered. I’ve lived there before 2006 war! It was a paradise back then but it was a house built on sand by petromoney to entertain the oppressed rich golf tourists so they don’t start a rebellions or dare to demand freedom for women, gay, alcohol etc in gulf countries. It wasn’t a real economy! I don’t even see them right now understanding the reason behind their situation or the consequences of their very flashy, extravagant and shallow values! They only blame the government that they keep choosing, The government that represent their culture of selfishness and greed. They still think they are great people, educated and cultured (because they know the names of all of the famous French fashion designers lol) and they still believe that they deserve better. I’m so sorry but you deserve what you got. My heart aches for the pregnant woman who couldn’t find the magnesium because her fellow men were busy importing hot coutures and fancy cars.

This has been happening in Lebanon forever, the difference is that Lebanon has a massive diaspora that keeps the country propped up by sending money.
It's called corruption.
I feel so bad right now seeing this people having no right over themselves it breaks my heart
The Lebanese people, like the rest of the world, don't have money, what they have is worthless fiat paper currency. Real money has intrinsic value. They have monopoly currency. Paper and electronic currency have no value of themselves, only what is ascribed to them by blind belief. They are intrinsically valueless. Actual money has a value because it is rare, useful, non perishable, and costs great energy to create. Gold and silver represent the energy they cost to mine and their rarity. This is why we chose them as money 5000 years ago. Will we not learn before the very same happens to our facsimile currency. US dollar has lost over 95% in the last 50 years since going of the Gold convertibility and went off bi-metal Silver in the early 1870's. A bi-metal system disciplines human nature to a fixed limited useful resource as money and the coinage should have no ascribed value, only a fixed weight, allowing its percived value to float comparatively to productivity, as it will anyway There is no other way to save humans from human nature IMHO.

the whole concept of subsidies is a huge mistake, it encourages smuggling and makes goods super cheap not only for the poor but also for those who can easily afford them. A much more rational social policy is to have cash benefits for the very poor and they can spend them for whatever they need. Sadly, in a country like Lebanon, that doesn't produce anything, there will never be enough money to help all the people who might need help, it's just a fact of life but taxing more successful people or corporations too much is counterproductive as they then tend to vote with their feet and relocate. Another huge error in Lebanon is state monopolies, they always foster inefficiency and corruption and are best avoided, healthy competition always works much better.
