I'm so glad I got to talk about some of those game-feel techniques in this video. I hope I get to have more game dev talk in future ones! Speaking of which-- What should I look at next??
Love the direction you took this video my man! I could listen to you talk about the little things in the game's design all day long! Stuffs fascinating.
Seeing footage of GW2 jumping puzzles is an absolute throwback oh my god especially that one But I really like this video, loved the section where you really dig deep into the mechanics! naming and explaining them is cool to see! also saw on the nitro radcord that you said this is your second youtube video ever? DUDE IF YOU CAN MAKE STUFF THIS GOOD FOR YOUR *SECOND* VIDEO, I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE WHAT YA DO NEXT! :)
Thank you so much, that means the world!!! And yeah, I never expected to talk about GW2 on the channel ever, so doing ti so early was awesome. That game deserves more praise too haha
I really liked the video! As someone who already played the game, I can say you did an amazing job introducing it to new players. Just a few notes: If i remember correctly, the assist mode for Mario came after celeste, and possibly draw some inspiration from it. The corner correction also works on diagonals, which make you go around the corner instead of grabbing it, and also look quite funny :) Assuming you play the game on pc (i don't think version 1.3.1.2 is out for consoles yet), i can't recommend enough to try out the amazing community made mods after completing the main game. (They're really easy to download + have a tutorial (recommended playing them on another save file)) And for all the players who played this game, you should really watch speedrun even if you dont interested in doing this yourself, this is 100% guaranteed to blow your mind ;)
Hey, thanks for watching!! :D From what I can tell, there is no confirmation that Mario took any inspiration from Celeste in terms of the "Assist Mode" naming convention. Or at least, I couldn't find anything in writing. However, it's definitely true that the Celeste developers had a huge sigh of relief when Nintendo used the same name, and basically confirmed that their choice was a good one. In Celeste, "Assist Mode" was originally going to be called "Cheat Mode", but they felt it sounded too judgmental. If you're interested in a deeper dive into Celeste's Assist Mode, I recommend you check out the "What Makes Celeste's Assist Mode Special" video from Game Makers Toolkit! I didn't even realize there were mods for Celeste, so I'm definitely going to have to check those out!! (I also agree, speedruns of this game are cool as heck)
@@Cosmosis i actually did watch this GMTK, but you're right thats why i wrote "possibly". If you search for some mods to start with, i recommend those: Frozen waterfall Tornado valley Glyph Cavern of the ancient The secret of celeste mountain Crystalized Most of this maps ate around b/c/ farewell level of difficulty. Have fun :)
This was the first game I actually was motivated to get better at after the main story to get all the collectables wish you had mentioned the advanced game mechanics the game teaches you later on it made it feel like there was always something I didn’t know and I could keep getting better as I progressed also Wave dashing and extended hyper dashing just feels so satisfying when it’s done right.
I've actually considered talking about that stuff in its own video!! If I ever get the time to return to celeste, I will 100% make a video about chapter 9, and all the stuff introduced after the main game
unfortunately, 3 of the 5 assists are not great for reducing difficulty but not removing the challenge entirely. invincibility is about as unbalanced as you think it is. 2 dashes is useful but not game-breaking in some areas, but in other areas allows you to completely bypass challenges. it is also completely useless after the game just gives you the upgrade in the story. when you use infinite dashes, on the other hand, you can fly around almost every obstacle. infinite stamina might make a few sections easier, especially those sections where you are supposed to walljump up large columns, but in the rooms that are designed around limited stamina it is once again rather broken. reduced speed and dash assist are both very good
Those are all good points! I still think it's really useful for people who struggle and still want to experience the story though. The story in this game is pretty great IMO
