stunning imagery - thanks for sharing. I marvel at how close you can get -- for me 10-15 ft is all I can do

Thank you. A 1200mm equivalent lens helps TBF, and I think the wind made them reluctant to fly

Excellent video as usual Neil but there seems to be an audio fail at 1:37, for a few seconds. Also, near the end, you mention "that Raft Spider", which I didn't see in the video.
I haven't had much luck at Latchmore with Scarce Blue-tailed, though I have managed to find them in at least three NF sites with no previous records. Yes, I have become a bit obsessed with the species.

      I noticed that too.

Yes I can hear it now, not sure what's happened there - probably related to finishing editing and uploading at 1am though! lol
I wish RUclips had a decent post upload edit function!

Re: the raft spider this is the afternoon of the day I recorded the last episode, in hindsight I should have made that a bit clearer

Of all the species I was hoping to see in the New Forest, this was the only one which eluded me this July. In fact, I'd never seen one. I finally got them this week, close to Bristol. Looking forward to your Scottish installment. I had mixed results during my two brief spells in Scotland this summer but, on reflection, was happy enough to get Northern Damselfly at least....and there's always next year!

Yes I think its the hardest species to find, the only reason i got them here is because I knew where to look, and only then because I was told what area to look in (and sworn to secrecy!)

@@ukwildlife The ones I saw near Bristol were on private land. Fortunately, a local expert knew precisely where to find them.

@cpa2788 You can't beat local knowledge... even more so when they gave access to places :)

I concur with @stevehewitt1968 on the video glitch and lack of Raft Spider 😆but otherwise great episode! I have to confess that I do find the description of the blue markings distribution on the two species to be confusing, but I think I may be having trouble counting backwards from 10, or at least determining where the last couple of segments begin and end. To my eyes the "Segment 9" label for the Blue-tailed at 02:03 appears to be pointing to segment 10 or am I mistaken? What I can see for sure is that the blue extends further up (towards thorax) on the scarce and there are fine black marks on the top of the mainly blue segment. No denying the wing length difference though. Cheers! 🙂

Yea the raft spider was in 1st New forwt episode (crockford) - when I filmed it, it should have been all 1 episode.
Ill have a look at the segments. One lesson learned is not to upload straight after editing at 1am!
