Music is ubiquitous-but do societies around the world use similar building blocks to construct their songs? Researchers dove into detailed descriptions and samples of songs to understand what universal traits underlie music. This video examines four categories of song: lullabies, dance, healing, and love.

How do you define "rhythmic complexity"? Webern isn't something you can dance to, and most people would probably describe his "Five Pieces for Orchestra" as a "lullaby". But believe me, it's highly rhythmically complex. Debussy's "Sirenes" is pretty damn "mellow", but I'd hardly call it "religious".
There are areas of human knowledge where things can be described precisely. Electron shells, mass, acceleration, acids, etc; all can be quite precisely defined. "Rhythmic complexity" is something that I think is rather more elusive.

I've noticed in Western culture most popular songs are love or sex songs. Other songs are often religious. Hardly anyone sings about science, philosophy or any of many interesting areas of thought. I have wondered why that is so.
To sell music it has to be relateable, and I suppose most people don't have the mental capacity to contemplate philosophy or science. As sad as it is, a lot of music today seems to be more like selling a brand, than an art form with deep emotional value.
because music is highly emotional, while science is anything but. i feel art and science are opposites in many ways tbh
I kinnd of make philosophical music with lyrics not with sound, its hard to consider what that genre Would be called but something like Crystal Castles- Empathy is probably what you mean if you look up the lyrics. Im not saying nobody should but i really dont enjoy the infinite conveyer belt of churned out love songs, there are so many if feels superficial. Try and appreciate indie albums guys ! Music isnt money, its better

Invincible Nightmare have you not seen “the dead poets society”? There is a scene in which the teacher has the students rip a page out of their poetry book because it limited poetry to a scale of rating that valued meter over soul.
@@yesi6058 Yeah I've seen it and I suspected you were talking about that scene, but here it's different. They measured real quantifiable traits and trends such as wether a song is a love song, a dance song, religious song, etc and try to find patterns through different societies and cultures.
In the film, what Robbin Williams' character qualifies as 'excrement' if I recall correctly is that the author of the book tries to objectify "greatness" of a poem based on totally subjective things. Here, researchers don't ever make a value judgement of traditionnal music, they only try to analyse music from an anthropological perspective which is totally different than what the author of the book does with poetry.

I doubt that is true. Even non human animal socities have music (and dance). They are the two arts the join many species together.
