Michael never becomes less cringe, he just becomes more likeable. It's really the difference between British comedy characters and American comedy characters. British comedy is nearly always set up so that the audience is rooting for the main character to lose, while American comedies are nearly always set up so that the audience is rooting for the main character to win. The first season kept that "rooting to lose" aspect of how Michael's character was written from David Brent (Ricky Gervais) until the writers finally realized that that wouldn't be sustainable for an American audience especially with the much longer American TV seasons.
To most of the characters, this office is their workplace, but to Michael, it's his surrogate family. At some level, the rest of the characters realize this, and that's part of the reason they put up with so much.
That guy at the end was an actual chili’s employee that chili’s had the writer’s include that line about not being welcome at the chain anymore because they thought it’d be a firm message about them taking drinking seriously but it ended up being one of the funnier lines of the episode.
This episode was not actually shot at a Chili's, but at an abandoned location they dressed up to look like one. The actor playing the Chili's manager was Christopher T. Wood and this was his 11th role.
The biggest difference from season 1 to season 2 is that season 2 has happier endings and the character are a little more endearing to each other except maybe Dwight because hes Dwight
@@bileygr1216 Ig i’ll see, there’s been times where he’s definitely developed but the episode right after it feels like he’s back to the same person. I’m on season 6 so hopefully it gets better

I don't know what others think. But for me there's a huge difference between a racist joke (that is meant to offend) and a joke about racism or racist people. And The Office nails it with the second kind.
I think the reason Michael's "racist" jokes work is because his "racism" is coming from a place of naivety. Michael is just too innocent/ignorant to realize what he's doing can be offensive. As opposed to someone who is aware it's offensive and does it anyway.
first kind or second kind? the office seems to fall more in the second camp for me, where michael makes racist jokes but they’re never the punchline-the punchline is the reactions of those around him (and the awkwardness of the situation he’s created), making it a joke about a racist person basically
I mean yeah, The Office can get away with it because Michael is just so absurd that no one is ever gonna take him seriously. But a joke that is meant to offend treads a very thin line. It's really hard to nail a joke that's meant to offend without it being actually overtly offensive. Usually people do it when they people they make fun of, they themselves are apart of.
I remember watching this when it first came out and never being offended by Michael because I identified him for exactly what he is, which is the village idiot. If you're if you're finding it hard to understand Michael Scott's character just pay attention to what Spidey and Chris say @12:16 ... That about sums it up🤣
I loved y'alls reaction to this episode!! The Dundies is one of my favorite episodes of the entire show!! I've literally rewatched is so many times, I even have my own dundie haha.
This is one of the problems with watching a show that is so old and talked about. Clearly the shift in Michael's character was something you guys were aware of and you were searching for it so hard that it changes your perception of the show. His change is gradual, and up until the last season he's there his character is constantly evolving. The more you look for it the more it will distract from everything else, so just go with the flow.
Why are they like looking for a deep profound explanation for The Office? The whole point is to see people do things that normally wouldnt happen, if not then you could just film ourselves at work and watch a normal office life....just laugh and enjoy.
It's how funny how some them have no problem laughing at it all and admitting it's just funny. Some try to find the line between satire and offensive, some act like they never heard or seen things and is just morally offended and shocked.
