Gorden Tallis SENT OFF! Origin 2000 - Game 1.

- With 10 minutes remaining in the match and Queensland 16-12 in front, New South Wales knock the ball on twice 16 metres out from their line, and Referee Bill Harrigan dumbfoundingly calls play on. The Blues then score that set to tie the scores at 16-16. Gorden Tallis challenges the referee, and legend has it Tallis called Harrigan "a cheat". This is true, however it has recently come to light that Tallis also told Harrigan that Steve Clark (another NRL referee) was "a better referee" than him, and that Clark should be officiating Origin 2. This allegedly got under Harrigan's skin more than the "cheat" comment, hence the sending off (Tallis' version of this story can be viewed in the foxsports link below). New South Wales went on to win the match 20-16, thanks to a late try to debutant fullback, David Peachey. New South Wales famously went on to win the 2000 series in a clean-sweep.
Interesting footnote: Gorden Tallis has since stated that the cameraman who he told to "f#ck off" was 'Joe the Cameraman' of the Shane Warne/Scott Muller "Can't bowl, can't throw" cricket broadcast controversy.

anyone here after game 1 2024?
Bro wats up QUEENSLANDER QUEENSLANDER QUEENSLANDER ♥️♥️♥️
😂😂❤ yes
Yea man. Never liked that wanker
I'm not here no
Up the doggies
We need to clone Bill Harrigan.
He is way better than any ref today
I'm a NSW supporter but I will admit, that was indeed a knock on. When the referee and touch judge miss an error like that, no matter the team, I cannot help but cringe.
No wonder they got rid of the over head camera too that forward pass off the left wing was the 3rd joke in 30seconds exactly like what the NRL is now😆😆😆
The pass was fine thanks.
doesnt matter, still would have won, QLD just "didnt get" origin
@@paulschimmel1099 Except they didn't get rid of Spidercam.
If that was Cameron Smith, Bill Harrigan would be out of a job.
Ha! True
depends on what rules are in place. I remember a few years ago, when they introduced captains challenge, cam smith did what he usually does and speaks to the ref to overturn something and the ref said "you have a captains challenge are you, using it?"
That was smiths last year ha ha.
If it was Cameron Smith Bill wouldn't have been sprayed like a grub.
He should have been fired....very biased ref
@@JamesWilson-me8cs Cameron smith would’ve had Endless Captain challenges
Camera guy out here risking his life being in Talis face like that 😳
1:17 -
(Sports Director to Cameraman): "Get around in front of him!".
(Tallis to Cameraman): "Get outta my way, mate. Fck off".
Poor camera guy 🤣
nah he's fine...the cameraman never dies..
You don't see players abusing ref's much these days, especially with the addition of captain calls. Anytime a player gets upset about a call the ref just asks them if they want it reviewed, and 9/10 times they shut up because they know the call was correct.
2 be fair there was a couple knockons missed
Harrigan always missed NSW knock ons and forward passes....terrible
Bill wasn't taking no shit from Gordon! I don't want to hear it just get off my field!
Harrigan missed a call, that's in him. But Tallis abused the ref and refused to leave the field. Even the most Queensland loving ref would have sent him off
I love Gordon, I know bill missed 2 knock ons. But that’s a send off every day of the week. Calling a ref a cheat is a send off. The first thing you’re taught even before passing and tackling. The ref is always right even if he isn’t.
Besides the referee is only human
The TWO knock ons were very obvious,,but that's how Bill ref'd NSW
Yet ppl defend tamou for same thing
Adrian Lam playing for QLD was the most farcical selection in Origin history
I love Gordy and there were 2 knock ons. But you can’t call the ref a cheat. As soon as you open the officiating to that allegation we’ll fans believe it and before you know it, you’re dealing with wwe type garbage. Credibility is everything, and bill Harrigon was and is a man of integrity.
Well said. Bill Harrigan never let anyone give him crap. Wonder if the NRL sanctioned Gordon Tallis after that match for whatever he said to referee Harrigan?
@@BlairSauer No, he didn’t get any sanction and was available to play in Origin II
@@douglasboyd6235 Ah righto. That's interesting. NRL went soft on him. They would've at least given him an official warning I would've thought.
@@BlairSauer Back then, the Australian Rugby League still directly administered Origin matches. If it happened now then the NRL would have been much more strict.
@@douglasboyd6235 Ah righto. That's interesting to know.
All those big lads playing a hard game of league and the subs sit on chairs they borrowed from a primary school
these days NRL Player abuse or swear referee bill harrigan says just go to gordon
What about the ball from david peachey
Tallis was always a bit slow upstairs if he shut his mouth he would have been sweet but he cost his team.
Harrigan cost Qld 6 pts
in my opinion Steve Clark wasn't a better referee than Bill Harrigan
Tallis was always unbalanced
That’s what made him great, and he’s a sweetheart off the field too.
@@troystaunton254 def like the guy now. He has a big heart and appears thoroughly decent. But I do think he went beyond acceptable behaviour on the field and got away with too much. He just went too far. Ie/ big first hit… all cool… but then would be narky in the follow up flop, or mop up tackle, or play the ball ….
Anyway … I look back on it and so have empathy as he seemed to be wrestling with demons as well and he want dirty as such.
Ha. Easy win for nsw. Qld flogs
Back in 88 88 it meant something.
It meant something here too.
The game has lost this and it needs to get it back.
"Sam Backo" had visions of workers in orange.
It's too clinical and professional now.
Harrigan was blind or a cheat, depending what State you supported.
He was biased when it came to State of Origin. That's why the Blues won it the most in the 90s and early 00s
We talk about players who think they are bigger than the game. Here's a referee with an ego bigger than any of the players.
Gordon thought he was bad until he met Terry o connor😃
He still won though
He beat terry
Umm he owned Terry O Connor in 1997. This was in 2000.
@@philipgreenaway5631 Nonsense. Gordy is the one leaving the field with nose spread across his face. O'Connor never even flinched.
HE ACTUALLY TRIED TO ATTACK THE CAMERA MAN

The refs choices make more sense when you hear the audio.
July, 2024 and tallis is still a little qld sook
I was only a kid of 8 or 9 when I learned the world was full of cheats and manipulators. Still frustrates me to watch. Never been a more blatant example of point manipulation
Gordon's response to bills decision was a classic
a classic what?
@@Steve-gm2jl a classic origin moment, the fact it still gets replayed also confirms it
Tallis is so passionate he was not gonna let that missed knock on slide
only if the knock on is committed by the other side, if it was his side that did it, you would not hear a peep from Tallis.
And what did insulting the ref prove?
Harrigan was famous for never seeing NSW knock ons or forward passes

Wow Tallis got sent off when it should have been Harrigan. Isn't it great we have video referees these days.
He's still get sent off today for speaking to the ref that way.
The try would be disallowed - but he'd still be off for disrespect which you just can't do and rightfully so.
They had a video ref then too...
@@MichaelSmithAU He wouldn't speak to the ref that day today, he'd use the Captain's Challenge

Disgraceful performance by the ref.

You can back the ref here but in the long run tallis stood up for that missed call and I reckon that was pretty shit for getting sent off for
Tallis is agro and shifty!!!!!!
Harrigan didn't give a tuck.
I was there that night. Tallis called Bill a cheat apparently.
His exact words were, "You're a fucking cheat". and Gordon was right, Harrigan was.
@@farkn0se Agreed. He was a prick, and always wanted to be the star of the show.
Gordy was right
Gordon "the raging wanker" Tallis
‘Unbelievable’ said the commentator, ( not having a clue as to what had happened).
Didn’t they say unbelievable about the knockon? Clear as day knockon twice
Its easy to understand why Gordon was so angry with Harrigan for missing 2 blatant knock-ons that led to a pivotal Blues try. At that point Gordon and his team had fought tooth and nail to be leading 16-12 with 7 mins remaining on the clock. Gordon knew that the try would probably cost them a win and had to say something to Harrigan. He could have chosen better words but they were said in the heat of the moment. The fact is that Harrigan was WRONG and wasn't very professional in his actions. When pressed by Adrian Lamb and Gordan about the knock-ons, Harrigan was visibly upset about his mistakes and wouldn't comment. He let his emotions take over when Gordon said that Steven Clarke was a "better referee" and sent Gordon for 10 mins then changed that to a send off. Harrigan could have handled the situation a lot better by reporting the incident to the NRL officials after the game. The fact is, players at Origin level are playing for bigger stakes and it's not like they're playing down the park with their mates.
Many have suggested that Harrigan had an ego the size of Sydney Harbour and in many ways that was a far more dangerous thing. When Harrigan first came on the scene, he was raised up to represent the 'new age' of refereeing. He copped heaps of flack after Saints' loss in the 1999 grand final. The match saw countless bad ref calls go against the Dragons in the final 20 minutes. In 2000, he copped plenty of criticism after the State of Origin & he displayed egotistical contempt for his critics in his media responses. In 2002, history repeated itself when Harrigan blundered his way through the State of Origin and once again, he was the main headline coming into the decider. That same year, in a Parramatta game, Harrigan sin binned Buettner (56th min), Hindmarsh (58th min) and Dykes (64th min) effectively forcing Parramatta to play the game with ten men. He then sin binned Buettner again in the 75th minute for dissent bringing the final tally to four.
It was evident that it was by enforcing this rule, Harrigan became the main news item and the match itself became irrelevant. Harrigan had an annoying habit of pulling up plays and sending off players depending on his mood. This wouldn't be so bad in itself, but in Harrigan's case, he had a history of getting obsessive about certain activities to the point where he made it a personal quest. It was also well known that he had Gordon in his sights as well. But, in the end many people were sick to death of watching a referee shove the game aside and take centre stage. But as we all know, a good referee is the one who isn't noticed by the audience. Is there still some of us out there who subscribe to the view that referees should not be seen or heard throughout the match?
Tallis abused the ref. Doesn't matter if the ref made mistakes, Tallis was wrong, even he knows he was wrong now.
If you call the ref a fucking chest it's a send off. Tallis could have gone back to the field, he refused
It’s up to the players if the ref is seen or heard. Play by the rules, play to the whistle. You won’t even notice the guy.
Well said.
Thank you for your concise and reasoned piece.
Him and that pommy ref are easily 2 of the worst refs in rugby league. I liked Tim Mander and Steve Clarke in the late 90’s and early 00’s.
Captains challenge...bahahahaa
Bring back bill
As a blues fan Harrigan got that wrong 2 knock ons there and he and the touch judges missed them both
it was normal rules for Bill...never saw NSW errors
Impossible to miss both knock ons...but NSW were behind at the time
@@1362pcIt's crazy to read stuff like that considering Bill Harrigan being responsible for gifting Queensland at least 3 series wins in their 7 straight through his corrupt refereeing.

Tallis was right....clearly two knock ons, but that was what Bill did, he never saw NSW errors
So called best referee in the world misses 2 knock ons in a row and cannot be clear whether it’s 10 in the bin or a send off?
He initially gave Tallis 10 in the bin and then Tallis just kept going. It was initially a sin bin and then Tallis made it worse.
My dad was correct Bill harrigan was the worse referee in ARL/NRL history
Nope. He was the best. Only one with enough backbone to make the big calls.
Everyone makes mistakes, but sending a player off who abuses/calls him a cheat is 100% the right decision (and one most refs today wouldn’t make).
Even Tallis later said this was the right call.
@@StrongerAths No he was the worst. What you call backbone is actually ego, at the expense of the game, and what you call big calls are actually wrong calls. Maybe everyone makes mistakes, but not everyone makes as many mistakes and as big of mistakes as what Harrigan made.
2000 state of origin is the best 3 series games ever
As usual NSW got away with murder
