it's funny, I was just talking with my boss about how a lot of Mr Beast's techniques he's lauded for are just... old TV retention tricks lol. Like, hello? He's not an innovator, just iterator on the old medium.
@@TDTProductions fair enough, but he definitely made his video’s extremely stimulating for the younger audience, and added some old tricks to help attract adults, or at least the older audience.
Another big change this caused which wasnt mentioned is a huge genetational shift about "watching TV". By that i mean as an activity. As in sitting in front of the TV and watching whatever is on. I feel like me and people younger than me never do this. We sit down in front of the TV to watch something specific and there isn't something specific we want to watch we don't watch at all. Older people will just ait down and start flipping through or checking the guide to "find something to watch". It's a baffling concept to me.
makes me happy to see the new direction of your channel with video essays/interview, as well as some investigation. Just make sure the content that you make is something your going be able to enjoy long term
Adam Savage himself mentioned how Mythbusters would not make it modern-day, it would have to be something very different than what it was, which I take to be a big departure from what made it so great,
Came to support-watch, left satisfied but with questions about the future of media. I don't even remember when I last re-watched for fun. Awesome editing btw.
A lot of these things you mentionned are because we have control over what we watch. I rewatched stuff on TV, because that's what was ON at the time. I didnt get to choose that, someone else did. And the only other choice i had was to switch to another channel. Producers of TV shows also didnt have the same requirements that YT creators do, like being able to focus on a single thing and just keep doing that. No, they had to vary the content to appeal to a large audience. And contend with ads. Now, even on YT, yeah we got ads, but i can skip em, or hide em or get premium. Thats my main gripe with YT above all else.
4:46 for youtube videos specifically for me, I watch old Vanoss gaming videos from 2011 to 2015 because it was a lot more funny and youtube wasn't such a sh*t platform back then and didn't censor you or demonetize you every second. Now these days if you're let's say an adult animator, your animations and stuff get marked for kids when it's not meant for kids, you can't swear when your videos are meant for older audiences because even though youtube kids exists, they want everything to be family friendly. It's so restricted and boring but also annoying these days. Also you didn't have to constantly deal with bots spamming your comment section with questionable and HIGHLY illegal things. As a lot of people say, it's not "You"tube anymore it's "Them"tube as it's all about them. Oh and a couple things is they care more about fighting adblockers than to deal with the horrible ads they have. It's stupid. I will continue to use an ad blocker until youtube dies because I don't want to see some ad for a phone app that can x-ray through peoples clothes (which is an actual ad I've seen people talk about), you also have all the people false striking channels and everything, people say it's a youtube problem but it's more so the copyright system as a whole. Companies can even be falsely copyright struck out of youtube. Other people have also said the copyright system as a whole is horrible, Pirate Software/Thor has explained this very well in a video too. But I also feel like it's maybe both youtube and the copyright system. Some people want to stay private on the internet and when someone takes down someones channel, they have to share their irl info, which I've seen some people do this to dox people like Ironmouse. Maybe it's not just youtube but I feel like the internet wasn't like how it used to be. Everyone wants to control what you do and say now on the internet. I feel like the internet isn't as fun as it was from back then maybe like, early 2000's up to maybe 2016? 2015? Anyway that's enough rambling from me.
Mesome, there are several videos I still re-watch on a regular basis. Your spicy clips for example. I watch it because it’s funny to me still! So it’s not an alien concept
But can you really count that? Clips are MOMENTS not CONTENT. They leave a lasting impact that makes you want to come back to those MOMENTS but not the videos in their entirety. Albeit this is just a generalization, not to speak specifically on your behalf, because I dont know, but this differentiates something like Spicy Clips from something like the Hacksmith making their first project, which arguably, should be worth rewatching just as much as spicy clips!.

I rewatch RUclips videos I enjoyed often. I think I watched MrBeast's Squid Games at least 2-3 times, it was a very good watch. I rewatch old VSauce videos often, same with Veritasium. I rewatch reviews for old games I enjoyed.
At this point I have more add time than actual video time... I'm watching Neebs gaming series 2 of conan exiles and I get adds every 5 minutes. Then they'll throw in a 60 second add that can be skipped after the 60 seconds and you'll see fewer adds after... They are literally making it so you HAVE to see these ads so you don't see more. There are some channels that have good rewatch value on video like the MSDOS LOTR game video from oney plays. I think I’ve watched that at least 100 times.
I'm surprised they haven't come up with "RUclips TV" where the website is setup the same as traditional cable broadcasts; Set time slots and different channels featuring multiple creators/ productions.
Here is my Take. RUclips has absorbed the greater whole of TV because the platform is very good at delivering isolated, episodic content that holds little narrative value over the next “episode” within the series or in this case content career. This is especially true for Reality TV. For Example, I use to watch this Show called Storm Chasers back when I was a Kid. This show flourished on TV because the episodes were isolated from one another. You did not need to watch one episode to understand what was going on in this episode. It delivered individual viewing because outside of that Air time, you were unable to go back and watch previous episodes unless you had recorded the episode previously. This is true for most shows being absorbed onto RUclips with a few notable exceptions, like Avatar, but even then, that isolated Structure is somewhat present within the show. This is still true for new shows being produced on RUclips, like Helluva Boss. While the show might have an overarching plot, most episodes are meant and designed to be viewed individually. There are very few exceptions to this general structure, like Pt1-pt3 single events. But that’s the thing. Episodes designed like this are meant to be apart of a greater event. Nowadays, most shows that flourish upon platforms are shows designed to be both binge-able and cinematic in Nature. Take Arcane for example. The show, outside of individual seasons, provides a continuous experience. Skipping an episode would break and disconnect the experience, similar to skipping forward in a Movie. The Shows are designed to be Movie like. Another Example is the Zach Snyder Cut of the Justice League. This is a movie. A clear cut movie. The thing is, the Movie was designed very episodically with individual and distinct sections. That being said, the experience is continuous throughout the whole of the movie. You are encouraged to binge the rather lengthy movie as you are encouraged to Binge shows like Arcane and Loki. This difference between Binge-able and Isolated Episodic Structures has caused TV to become divided between RUclips and Streaming Services. Very Rarely do we get a show on RUclips designed with a Binge-able experience in mind, and very rarely do we get a new show on a streaming service designed to have isolated experiences in mind. The only examples I can think of that don’t exist in any meaningful way on RUclips but do remain on Streaming Services are shows like Family Guy and the Simpsons, but even these shows flourish on RUclips, especially the Shorts section. More to Come
I couldn't imagine watching TV. My taste in entertainment is too niche. Tv would NEVER have shows about video games, little known artists, obscure drama, and even documtries about weird things. RUclips can actually cater towards an individuals unique tastes, where as you have to conform to what TV shows you.
The only reason I watched TV originally is because I got a new cable box or something and it caused me to lose all my stuff on the DVR. Now I find cartoons I care about on HBO I personally have rewatched all of a couple youtuber's videos. Several Halo Wars 2 creators, ProlikeChro, VSauce, I think there's a few more but you're right not rewatching stuff generally
The last time I re watched a you tube video (not short) was like 5 years ago when I’d watch a lot of destiny PvP montages (often for the music). Your totally right that it’s just not something we do for whatever reason
Re-runs were i think to fill dead air on the TV stations , there is so much on the internet we dont have time to watch something twice. when watching something once , hundreds of thousands of more videos are brand new to watch.
I rewatch spicy clips playlist occasionally. They have some good highlights to them that I occasionally forget about. Same with old Elden Ring Bingo Brawlers seasons.
I like to think that at the end of the day, viewers are still gravitating towards relatibility and more "a girl/guy made this in his bedroom" type youtube videos than these hyper produced content piecs! RUclips is 110% the new TV but unlike that medium, there no one between you and hitting publish!
The attention span is kaput ... Tbh,still watching a hr episode,is more satisfying then a 10 min video.. RUclips, tiktok, ect,. Proves that ,even now, people are still divided what RUclips should be.. and no,we still watch it multiple times, because you can save it to rewatch...
My parents are close to retirement age and constantly have the TV on and barely watch anything. They usually are on their phones at the same time, just on FB or playing bad mobile games. When they actually want to watch something they usually swap to Netflix etc, still often also on their phones. Funny thing is that somehow they still view this as more productive than me playing a game all afternoon.
Funny enough the youtube videos I remember watching multiple times are Byf‘s 3 hour and 10 hour „the story of destiny“ videos. I guess that’s because this is close to having a friend play alongside me when no one is online to do so. Same as you I cannot remember when I watched last TV. If at all I watch the News and the weather.
It's disappointing that Mythbusters can't spell, it's "duct", and that's probably why I never watched it. Commercial TV did it to themselves. It's about time that the small time passionate creators took over, but just remember to ditch them when they ultimately sell out.
There are few things I re-watch, I actually make it a point to try to never re-watch something, the few things I do are either something I LOVE(Bleach, I realized it's my favorite anime because I go back to re-watch ALL of it every few years, to the point I made a guide for myself) and shows/RUclips from my childhood/teens, anyone who knew SSOHPKC, I like going back to his videos once in a while, reminds me of a better time, and he was always my favorite person to watch. I'll post my Bleach guide in a reply below, if you need clarity, let me know ;)
Bleach is 45% filler some as episodes, most as full arcs, and a few that mix filler with Canon in them(references/characters from filler, I won't mention these), after re-watching, I decided to make this guide with the filler in mind since it's actually good content, I also have a separate bit for all the individual/unimportant episodes. Side note: Assuming you want to skip the filler this should also help, although I do recommend two arcs because they blend in very well with the Canon arcs, and both of the filler Arcs that don't fit great are also good. This show becomes such a mess in Arc 3 that I need to make a legend lol, To avoid spoilers I'll just label them as, '-#' order to watch in, 'Arc #' order it came out, '(C)' for Manga Canon Arcs, '(F)' for Non-Canon/Filler, '(F/B)' Same as (F) but also Blends in well with Canon, watch as they appear NOT later, '&' If this is between episodes there was filler in that gap of episodes that didn't blend at all and interrupted the story completely. Note: Movies 2, 3, & 4 can be watched anytime after '-4th, Arc 6 Episode 341' same with Arcs 4 & 5 Movie 1: Memories of Nobody, Watch after Arc 2 Movie 2: The Diamond Dust Rebellion Movie 3: Fade to Black Movie 4: Hell Verse, Episode 299 is a Prologue(Watch before this movie) Individual Filler Episodes are mainly comedy episodes that interrupt the flow of the show and don't blend in, all of this can be watched any time after you reach them, personally, I watched all of it after Episode 341 with all the other Filler & Movies, Filler that Blends in well was mentioned with their Arcs. 33, 50, 213, 214, 228, 229, 287, 298, 303, 304, 305, 311,312, 313, 314, 315, 316, 355 Some of these tell a little story so I underlined them, 305 is my personal favorite as it's Hilarious. (NOTE: Underline disappeared, I forget where it was, RIP) Special Exception: Episode 227 is Canon and basically Episode 0, telling what happened right before Episode 1(Don't watch it before then though) Watch Order: (Episode 266 is a Recap Episode) -1st, Arc 1(C): Episodes 1-63, -2nd, Arc 2(F/B): Episodes 64-108, -3rd, Arc 3(C): Episodes 109-167 & 190-203 & 215-226 & 267-286 & 288-297 & 300-302 & 306-310, (F/B)128-137, (F/B)147-149, (C) 206-212(For most natural timing watch after episode 278) -4th, Arc 6(F/B): Episodes 317-341, after this is the only time for Arcs 4(F) & 5(F) to make any sense but they still have minor inconsistencies because of watching them this late (Mainly the pattern on the Mask) -5th, Arc 4(F): Episodes 168-189, (F) 204-205 (related to this arc) -6th, Arc 5(F): Episodes 230-265, -7th, Arc 7(C): Episodes 342-366,
I'll be honest, I'm loving the direction of your content right now. I don't know how much of a grind it is and also don't know if it's profitable enough. I just hope it works out for you.
I rewatch spicy clips, um tom cristie videos, Uno the Movie, anime, movies I like, there's a GameCube game on steam I could play and replay till the end of time... TBH its new stuff I struggle to get through.
like one of my favourite shows, survivorman by les Stroud is entirely on RUclips, plus he does directors commentary on his RUclips channel so why would i wanna watch tv? plus i don't really find anything interesting on tv and the shit i wanna watch is like locked behind a 30 euros a month paywall so why would i spend money on that?
The only things that traditional over-the-air TV really excels at is at live events and as curated background noise. Everything else we could possibly want to watch is better served as on-demand video, whether streamed or downloaded and watched as needed. I haven't sat down on purpose to watch TV at home in about ten to twelve years - the only times I've done so since then are when I'm in hotel getting ready for bed or visiting an older relative's house and I don't go to bed as early as they do. And even in those circumstances, I'm looking for cooking competition shows, How It's Made, or whatever's on the Travel Channel...watching traditional network TV on its schedule hasn't been interesting to me in a long time. I do have some RUclips videos that I go back and re-watch. Most are fairly short and almost all of them are funny in some way or another - Llamas With Hats, Charlie the Unicorn, certain Cyanide & Happiness videos (such as La Telepathé), the Grzegorz Brzęczyszczykiewicz bit from a post-WWII Polish comedy film, certain Key & Peele skits, all of the fake GI Joe PSAs, some of the musical numbers from Family Guy, and the like. I've also rarely re-watched videos when introducing others to them, such as showing a buddy of mine a bunch of Dylan Hollis' vintage recipe attempts just a week or two ago. And some videos I keep in my back pocket to use as reactions on various social media platforms, via email, or via text (Bishop Bullwinkle's Hell to the Naw Naw being particularly useful in this respect). There is something to be said for not really wanting and/or being able to re-watch old RUclips videos, in general. Part of that might be the generally singular nature of videos. Yes, there are plenty of serial how-to videos, playlists of thematically similar content (watching just Binging With Babish videos, or Brandon Herrera's Darwin Awards, or Hydraulic Press Channel's playlist of just the times they used the Extruder 5,000,000), but even the strictly fictional content doesn't seem to have much in common in terms of structure with even modern streamed television shows, much less television of the 90s and before. All 12 episodes of Llamas With Hats is over in like 30 minutes, whereas even today's criminally short television seasons are 8-12 episodes with 20-40+ minutes of content each. There certainly are questions to be asked about the longevity of long-form content, given the ever-shrinking attention spans of younger generations and appeals to the lowest common denominator among studio executives, but RUclips's bread and butter for content is fundamentally different from TV - even if TV shows are overwhelmingly being streamed rather than on the networks' schedule.

Ive been there. Just make money doing it for youtube and twitch and the nay-say will get quieter
“duck tape”
Ah, the diminishing screen time attention span! Well stated.
I rewatch TheRussianBadger and Byf’s TSLAYP series pretty frequently.
Did you notice the people you mentioned in your opening all look alike?
Where are the rest of us?
I rewatch Minecraft players all the time
It's disappointing that Mythbusters can't spell, it's "duct", and that's probably why I never watched it.
This show becomes such a mess in Arc 3 that I need to make a legend lol,
To avoid spoilers I'll just label them as,
'-#' order to watch in,
'Arc #' order it came out,
'(C)' for Manga Canon Arcs,
'(F)' for Non-Canon/Filler,
'(F/B)' Same as (F) but also Blends in well with Canon, watch as they appear NOT later,
'&' If this is between episodes there was filler in that gap of episodes that didn't blend at all and interrupted the story completely.
Note: Movies 2, 3, & 4 can be watched anytime after '-4th, Arc 6 Episode 341' same with Arcs 4 & 5
Movie 1: Memories of Nobody, Watch after Arc 2
Movie 2: The Diamond Dust Rebellion
Movie 3: Fade to Black
Movie 4: Hell Verse, Episode 299 is a Prologue(Watch before this movie)
Individual Filler Episodes are mainly comedy episodes that interrupt the flow of the show and don't blend in, all of this can be watched any time after you reach them, personally, I watched all of it after Episode 341 with all the other Filler & Movies, Filler that Blends in well was mentioned with their Arcs.
33, 50, 213, 214, 228, 229, 287, 298, 303, 304, 305, 311,312, 313, 314, 315, 316, 355
Some of these tell a little story so I underlined them, 305 is my personal favorite as it's Hilarious. (NOTE: Underline disappeared, I forget where it was, RIP)
Special Exception: Episode 227 is Canon and basically Episode 0, telling what happened right before Episode 1(Don't watch it before then though)
Watch Order: (Episode 266 is a Recap Episode)
-1st, Arc 1(C): Episodes 1-63,
-2nd, Arc 2(F/B): Episodes 64-108,
-3rd, Arc 3(C): Episodes 109-167 & 190-203 & 215-226 & 267-286 & 288-297 & 300-302 & 306-310, (F/B)128-137, (F/B)147-149, (C) 206-212(For most natural timing watch after episode 278)
-4th, Arc 6(F/B): Episodes 317-341, after this is the only time for Arcs 4(F) & 5(F) to make any sense but they still have minor inconsistencies because of watching them this late (Mainly the pattern on the Mask)
-5th, Arc 4(F): Episodes 168-189, (F) 204-205 (related to this arc)
-6th, Arc 5(F): Episodes 230-265,
-7th, Arc 7(C): Episodes 342-366,
I'll be honest, I'm loving the direction of your content right now. I don't know how much of a grind it is and also don't know if it's profitable enough. I just hope it works out for you.
RUclips became what it swore to destroy.
Damn you get 8 hours of sleep every night? That's the craziest thing from this video 😜
great video. we're so screwed tho.
Hey TDT will you ever return to do some d2 content as a sidequest ?
I enyoyed ur old vids and it would be sad to loose such a unique creator...
Bro I’m expecting that cookie…
I rewatch spicy clips, um tom cristie videos, Uno the Movie, anime, movies I like, there's a GameCube game on steam I could play and replay till the end of time... TBH its new stuff I struggle to get through.
It already has been from the start(aftermath of cappa lawsuit)
Alphamaxnova1
The most rewatchable content there is imo
tbh people like me and emplemon have been saying shit like this for years now
we aint in 2010 no more
I rewatch @ymfah all the time but his videos are like movies
like one of my favourite shows, survivorman by les Stroud is entirely on RUclips, plus he does directors commentary on his RUclips channel so why would i wanna watch tv? plus i don't really find anything interesting on tv and the shit i wanna watch is like locked behind a 30 euros a month paywall so why would i spend money on that?
Things are not good because they last. Rather, id argue they are important becuse they end. And all good things must end.
I watch "reruns" every night. ASMR 😏🤓
bwuh? Speak for yourself, I re-watch well made, well edited videos many times over. Years and years later too.
Nah u definitely lost me with this video…
