We have our first deaf superhero (Makara, from Eternals) and our first HOH superhero (Hawkeye) - we have come a long way. Representation does matter in the long run. It provides subliminal socioeconomic upliftment that's hard to even quantify in monetary terms, viz. in the long run.
It doesn't matter. All you need is empathy. I am disabled and have been so my entire life, I am 57 now. I honestly can't name one single disabled actor or disabled character from TV or movies that I have ever seen. Does it bother me? No. I am a more than my disability. I am able to see myself in the place of people without disabilities. I have empathy.

This thread is fascinating, ..because op communicates from personal experience, and yet some folks will still seek to invalidate it. Is it such a trap of giving in to fear of what other people feel or like, that we don't even listen to someone whom we claim to be upholding? Some things that matter can't be seen.
Personally, I think this is all a load of nonsense. We don't really want representation. We want escapism and excitement. We want to live vicariously through the characters. It just helps if the character reflects us as the viewer. I bet if you picked out a random lgbtq person or a person of colour from the street, documented their life for a week and released that as a TV show, no one would watch it. Why? Because its boring. We already know people of colour exist and that lgbtq people exist. That's all part of the mediocrity of life. We want to see the exiting things. Gay characters are boring because gay characters are just like straight characters.... but gay. But gay characters falling in love. Now thats entertaining. How many shows/movies can you think of where a character being lgbtq hasn't been a key part of the plot/subplot. Heartstopper, Love Simon, Call Me By Your Name. All considered to be great for gay representation. All centred around a central plot line of two people who are gay/bisexual falling in love. Lgbtq people can watch these shows thinking.... if only that was my life. We watch media for the escapism. To laugh as the funny bits, to cheer when the heroes triumph or the couple finally kiss. To boo when the bad guy does something bad. To cry when it's sad and smile when it's happy. For that time when we're watching a show or movie we become those characters and we lose ourselves in the highs and lows of the plot. When the credits role, we don't care who was black or white, gay or straight, we just love the characters and the story they went through. We want to imagine ourselves as these characters and think how our lives would be if we were them. Living vicariously through characters is the sole purpose of any media. Representation comes secondary.
Exactly! It is like patronizing weak minded people. No need to have representation just to feel whole..there is something wrong inside if you feel that way. Like you need an external factor just to function properly
People forget the concept of "taxation without representation" as being just about class, and not about other things. But it covers everything, including race, gender, orientation and more.
@@Storyblocks that's the point. No matter what culture, race or sexual orientation a character represents, if the writing is bad, then it's meaningless. That's how it is
I think it’s nice to see diversity and people from different culture but as WOC I never understand y people r always focused on characters looking like themselves, I mean good for them but I always thought u could relate to characters by there act and not there appearance.
The problem is that the very large majority of characters and stories are representing white people. There is a direct disconnect to the ppl we see on screen vs the ppl in society, if only one group in society gets to be represented in media, how is that any way fair? So i think us minorities have every right to want to feel seen. We want to see ppl that look like ourselves or for our cultures to be represented bc most of all we ever had growing up are the stories of white cis straight people
@hikari I’d say both, but not on the same level. Since a movie or a novel is supposed to tell a story, the essence of the art comes first. Then we can distinguish it’s function : amuse, make cry, happy, and so on. If the main character is totally different from us in one movie show or serie, it’s totally okay. But when it’s everywhere and to a point that you’ve never read a single real book with a woc or moc as the main character, we’ll, since I (don’t know about you) live in a multicultural society, yup. That’s a problem. Because it implicitly probes what’s accepted, what you should look like, what’s the basic standards in books and everything. And if having a woc as a main character essentially means dealing with depression or police brutality, while when its white people it’s with quirky love stories and all, well there’s a problem. Can’t help you see it when it before your eyes. And indirectly if we see more people of a certain category doing basic daily stuff but never see anyone looking like us doing it, it can really bring ppl down. No wonder ppl were all chatty abt the gay show that came out on Netflix.
@@teenzr11 thinking like you would be totally erasing the fact that some category of people also belong to the art in general like movies and videos and music and paintings etc and that we can’t dismiss them, especially if there’s absolutely no reason for that
Thanks for the feedback! We believe that everyone should see themselves reflected in the media they consume, our goal is to remove barriers that have prevented the underrepresented from being accurately portrayed. While we have been focusing on Black and LGBTQ+ communities, we are planning to expand to other communities in the near future, and know we have more work to do.
Some questions: - Why is it illegal to pay reparations as per the 14th amendment? - Irish slaves costed a few shillings, African slaves costed 70 shillings. There were 10x as many Irish slaves as African slaves. Will the descendants of Irish slaves be paid their fair share for being stolen from their homeland too? - European Americans accounted for less than ~3% of slave owners. Will the slave market owners, slave boat owners and majority slave owning races pay their fair share for their guilt?

Because if minority groups are not/under/negatively represented in media they have less opportunities and power. It's called desirability politics which impacts all aspects of their lives in a negative way. The media is very classist, sexist and racist. People consume these ideas and develop politically incorrect ideas about other cultures, races and poor people leading to discrimination, exclusion and social immobility.
