- This week I was finally able to connect with Amber Hinds to get a hands on demo on how to use her Accessibility Checker plugin.
You probably know Amber from her Accessibility Weekly articles on Theadminbar.com, but if not, Amber is an expert in accessibility with clients like Nasa.
I know you’re looking at the timestamp of this video wondering if it’s worth the investment… and even if you don’t have the time right now to watch this - I would highly encourage you to schedule some time on your calendar to watch it as soon as possible.
Amber walks us through best practices and proper workflow of using both the free and premium versions of her plugin. Along the way we go down a few rabbit holes that illustrate why human intervention is such a critical part of accessibility, and there are golden nuggets sprinkled throughout the call (like how you should set up your starter site to save yourself a lot of headache!).
I hope you enjoy this video, and be sure to check the links down in the description where Amber has offered us a generous 20% off coupon for the pro version of Accessibility Checker.
With that, let’s dive in!

Please, do a video talking about how you HAVE to do manual checks too!
I see so many sites that have 100% on the checkers and they're gibberish to a human.
Also, you can add the aria hidden to the SVG code you paste into the icon field - just add aria-hidden="true" right after the opening svg tag. (All of the built in icons have this already).
You dont need to mess around with custom attributes.
Yeah, manual auditing is VERY important - so much to cover and so little time! Honestly though, if people did the bare minimum of getting 100% on the automated tests sites would be a whole lot better than they are now when no one is testing ANYTHING.
@laurabrown1976
can you please share video on manual checks bcz i am also searching for manual checkers and how they are fix rather then all automated checkers laura if u can share ur input that will help
That was a really valuable hour-long video I just watched. There were SO many good points about accessibility that I can use immediately in my ongoing projects, and I will definitely buy and test the pro version of the plugin. I especially liked that you also touched on the recurring revenue part of accessibility and, not least, how we can make things smarter by, for example, thinking about accessibility already in our starter site. Thanks for another informative video Kyle and @amber_hinds 🙂
So glad you enjoyed it! Keep an eye out... TAB's Black Friday page is going to have a GREAT offer on Accessibiliy Checker!
@@TheAdminBar awesome but I have bought a license using your code 💪
Thanks for explaining! So , the alt text on linked images (like the site logo) should describe the purpose of the link, not the image itself
That's how I understood it! I'm assuming that applies when the image is LINKED, not just a plain image.
Yes! Generally the best alt text on a linked logo would be "Company Name home page" because that explains where the link goes. If you had a non-linked logo then you could describe the logo if there's something important about how it looks that you want blind people to know too.
@@amber_hinds thanks! [Knowledge acquired]
interesting solution. when you take wcag 2.1 aa als refererence, how much criteria you can:
- check 100 % with your tool
- check partwise, manual control is necessary or useful
- test manual because you don`t address this criteria
curious...
😂 43:54, that's the typical solution that most designers love.
Rather than solve the problem, let's just hit "ignore" and get 100% 😅
I wish I could say I haven't seen people do that, but... 😂
😂 It's a built-in get out of jail free card 😂
That plugin is not free anymore! it cost $$$. ):
No, there is a free version and a premium version :)
