Fantastic stuff! This was really interesting to listen to. I feel that the beta stuff covered through leftover game files etc. gives a glimpse into more of the programming and design side, but hearing the perspective of a voice actor gives a completely original view of a game's development that is even more rarely seen than what you already do.
By Overwatch she means *Combine* Overwatch. "Citizen reminder: inaction is conspiracy, report counter behavior to a civil protection team immediately."
@@weenie7746 I could never make out what the voice said a lot of the time over the other game sounds, and the captions weren't really any help. I was able to hear some stuff about suppressing rebels or something but would like to see a full transcript, especially on Half Life 2: Episode 2 when Alyx is talking as soon as the voice starts and a helicopter or something is heard outside.
I've actually met her in person completely randomly. I went to a college for game programming which was located next to place that was used for theater practice and she was there auditioning for something and we ran it to each other while me and a few friends were talking about games. She join the conversation after asking our favorite games, mine is Portal and she said that she was GLaDOS. She's really nice and humble.
That was obvious. Who even thought that Portal 3 was coming when they said that Portal story ends on Portal 2. Maybe some spin off far in the future but there won't be a Portal game in a while unless they have something innovative and new.
Wow you held that interview so wonderfully, I can tell that Ellen was very cheerful talking with you. It's so interesting to get an insight into someone who all I knew of was her voice. I have a new founded respect for you both. ^_^ not that I didn't already!
One does not simply ask Ellen McLain for an interview. Is what i THOUGHT, before i have seen you beating the odds, and managing to ask this beautiful voice actor. Good job! i respect ya for that. (And also your other videos. :D)
This was a great interview! Personally, I played Portal 2 first and then Portal. After I played the first Portal the rest of the story made so much more sense. This interview answered many of my questions. Thanks!
* Ellen mentions F-Stop, the prequel to Portal 2 * * The Beta64 guy sounds interested * Dude, if you are thinking of making a Portal 2 episode of Beta64, I'd be willing to help provide information. I may not be an employee at Valve, but I know *most* about Portal 2's development; from the Directed Design Experiments to the Alternate Endings (and the unused Ending where Chell speaks), from the first year of F-Stop to the last two of Portal 2, from the unused "sp_a4_finale4_pc" (an unused track that is never heard anywhere in the final boss battle) to the cut Hover Turret (though, technically, it was just the Portal Curiosity Core attached to the ceiling via rope). If you want a walking dictionary about *most* of Portal 2's development, according to what the public knows, I'm your go-to guy. ...although, if you want to do the research yourself, I know some great sources, like "The Final Hours of Portal 2", the GDC "Portal 2 Post Mortem" video, the "Combine Overwiki", etc. But again, only if you're thinking about making a Portal 2 episode of Beta64. -- Ben24x7
F-Stop actually had no portals; instead, they had what was apparently a groundbreaking mechanic named 'f-stop'. The player was named Mel and carried a camera. Mel would go through the 80s styled test chambers with everything from Portal 1 redesigned to fit a much more cartoonish art-style.The GLaDOS of F-STOP Portal 2 was Cave Johnson. His mind was put into a robot, and he talked to you while you went through the test-chambers. Eventually, he teamed up with the mannequins, the turrets of F-Stop, to turn on mankind.
Unfortunately, I don't know a lot about Portal 1's development (other than how development began with the game 'Narbacular Drop', any information provided by the in-game developer commentary, and whatever I can find by digging through Portal's files). Really, the only other info I have that is slightly (but probably not) related to Portal, is a section of "The Final Hours of Portal 2" which explains how Jeep Barnett, Kim Swift, all the people who made 'Narbacular Drop' met on their first day at Digi-pen.
Goddamn she's the voice of my childhood. Combine overwatch = Half Life GLaDOS = Portal The Announcer = TF2 hell she's even the Witch from Left for Dead
This video was fantastic thanks so much for this Beta64 portal 1 & 2 are some of my favourite games of all time i watched this intre video and loved every moment of it and i loved to hear Ellens great personalty and she was very different from what i expected as a person and it adds sooo much more depth to Glados as a character and makes me gain tones of more respect for Ellen. definitely one of my favourite Va's of all time I really wish i could mash the sub button more and i definitely will come back to re-watch this video some time outstanding.
Wow :D this was amazing to listen to. Ellen McLain is just awesome and it's fascinating to see her personality like this. Thank you for bringing this to us.
She seems so sweet, which is quite different coming from GlaDOS. I finally got a copy of Portal 2 and finished it. It was so good. A different feel from the first game, but still excellent.
I enjoyed every second of this, thank you so much for interviewing a voice legend :) you should totally ask her husband one day, you can talk about Team Fortress 2 and other stuff.
Those two artists types that Ellen said, the interpreter and the creator, are very important to understand. Every artist work on their own abilities, and the perfect combination between both of them is what give us master pieces, not just in games but in other different careers too. As a classical musician, I understand and appreciate every word from this great and talented woman. This interview was very enjoyable and unique. I give thanks to Beta64 for share with us this and congratulate him for the effort. (Kudos from Guatemala, by the way) :)
She's a very fan-loving person, to a level unmatched by most voice actors. There's a Portal 2 mod/project called the Gary Hudston project and she provided new voice lines, free of charge.
Thank you so much for this. I absolutely LOVED listening to this. PLEASE do more of these, I love all your content and thank you so much for making these. Its really helping me find inspiration for me making my own games.
Hearing her voice again got me so hype, I feel like the urge to play all the Portal games right now once again ! It was fantastic, thank you so much for this interview !
Unbelievable how delightful she is. I could listen to her for hours on end, just talk about her life in extensive detail. It's rare to encounter an elderly person who ACTUALLY has something fascinating to talk about.
Wow, thank you both for this wonderful interview. It was fantastic and very interesting to listen to. You did a great job leading it as well. And of course, props to Ellen McLain, what a charming and wise lady. I'm thrilled.
That unused song is also viewable on Harry “Harry101UK” Callaghan's channel, which I'll put a link to the video right here: ruclips.net/video/ihYVZFl-Ck0/видео.html and his channel right here: ruclips.net/user/Harry101UK
Yep, Overwatch in Half Life 2 was the first video game character she voiced. Half Life 2 was initially released on 16 November 2004, and both Team Fortress 2 and the original Portal were initially released on the same date (10 October 2007).
*deeply amused by the fact the voice behind GLaDOS is a technophobe and has only watched her husband and friend play the actual games* XD This was interesting stuff, though! It is cool to hear a little more behind the scenes stuff on the voice acting front, and consider what might have been. (Portal prequel. . .what would that look like?) Though I have to admit, it's a bit weird to hear her voice WITHOUT the robotic overlays and whatnot. :P
This was a very interesting interview! She's got a very interesting personality, just like GLaDOS. :D Are you gonna do more interviews in the future? And if so: Who's on your list? Someone I'd *_LOVE_* to hear an interview with is Milton "DoctorM64" Guasti and his AM2R team!
At first glance, you may think the turrets sound like baby GLaDOS, because on the editor that Valve used to modify Ellen McLain's voice for GLaDOS, they moved the formant up much higher than they did for GLaDOS. This also applies to the curiosity core, which was also voiced by Ellen McLain. But for the intelligence core, which again was also voiced by Ellen McLain, they slowed down the beta cake recipe files 20%.

Team fortress or Overwatch? But tf2 came first since 08, she had to do Team fortress first? How? Time? Logic???
HELP!!
Commander Rainbow Ducky Overwatch is a character in half life 2
I am honestly beliving it.
Do a beta 64 episode on mario kart ds
By Overwatch she means *Combine* Overwatch.
"Citizen reminder: inaction is conspiracy, report counter behavior to a civil protection team immediately."
Just so people know
She wasn't in Blizzard's Overwatch. She played a character called Overwatch in Half-Life 2.
I'm so extremely depressed that this is a distinction that must be made.
She played the female voice that said that ambient stuff in the background?
@@weenie7746 I could never make out what the voice said a lot of the time over the other game sounds, and the captions weren't really any help. That's ironic on another level

+SimpleManGames Really cool story!
SimpleMan Even though in the game she was sadistic as all hell......odd
It's not odd when you consider it's *acting.*
Interview with Ellen McLain, AKA at least 20 minutes of usable Glados Dialogue
OMG IT'S YOU!
CamBen I used to watch your videos all the time during summer 2016. You make amazing edits and tbh im surprised to find you here
43:39 "I havent lived there for a looong time" gave me chills because it reminded me of "its been a loong time" in Portal 2

14:16 - "I haven't practiced that sound in a while" portal 3 not confirmed :(
:'(
Beta64 :'( Look at The Bright Side maybe it Might come true someday
That was obvious. Who even thought that Portal 3 was coming when they said that Portal story ends on Portal 2. Maybe some spin off far in the future but there won't be a Portal game in a while unless they have something innovative and new.
Maybe a prequel? Taking a shot in the dirt here.... Portal .5? Portal..... i got nothing...
Well i mean they still have a game-play feature called F-STOP that they might use
Haha , you sound SO nervous. :] But I am so GLaD you got this great opportunity! You deserve it!
20:11 -Ellen McLain: Well...That's a song I wrote in the Bathtub -Beta64-: Oh
Possibly the quietest "no" ever heard.
TTTTTTTTIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i can only imagine taking a voice class from her.
"Ooo! Teach me how to do GLaDOS!"
"One step at a time."

Can you still clap?
At least your Slow Clap Processor is still working.
Поймавший Маслину тоже русский? :)
Her normal speaking voice sounds like a combination of Ms. Frizzle and Mrs. Puff and I love it
Ms. Frizzle x Mrs. Puff child confirmed to be in Portal 3
Omg it's so dang true!!!
You got to interview Ellen McLain?! That is really awesome!

Goddamn she's the voice of my childhood.
Combine overwatch = Half Life
GLaDOS = Portal
The Announcer = TF2

Aw man listening to Ellen reminds me of my grandmother. She's such a lovely, sweet woman.

Why is your user pic so insulting?
1:14 when she says 'no no', it actually sounds like GLaDOS, like even without the special sound effects
I really enjoyed this! Maybe you could interview other game voice actors... Voice acting is one of my favourite aspects of game development!
I keep coming back to this. I don't know why
Did you time the footage so that as you mentioned you loved the Turrets, the Turret level started up?
If not, that's an amazing coincidence.
*the giggles. the awkwardness. its too strong*
Maybe he just was nervous about talking to someone be admires
She's such a kind lady oh my gosh
I enjoyed every second of this, thank you so much for interviewing a voice legend :) you should totally ask her husband one day, you can talk about Team Fortress 2 and other stuff.
she would make a great grandma
this was a triumph
I'm taking a note here, huge success
She sounds like a grandma but voices the most chilling characters (GLaDOS, Overwatch, the Administrator).

Oh my God, she worked at IU's radio? I can't believe I lived and worked in the same city at the same university as Ellen McLain.
Hearing her voice again got me so hype, I feel like the urge to play all the Portal games right now once again ! It was fantastic, thank you so much for this interview !

Yep, Overwatch in Half Life 2 was the first video game character she voiced. Half Life 2 was initially released on 16 November 2004, and both Team Fortress 2 and the original Portal were initially released on the same date (10 October 2007).

This was a very interesting interview!
She's got a very interesting personality, just like GLaDOS. :D
Are you gonna do more interviews in the future? And if so: Who's on your list?
Someone I'd *_LOVE_* to hear an interview with is Milton "DoctorM64" Guasti and his AM2R team!
I WOULD SO TAKE A CLASS TAUGHT BY ELLEN. MAN THAT'D BE COOL!!!!!
"Goodbye my only friend! Oh! Did you think I meant you?"
I hope she realises how loved she is. She's an icon
9:07 sounds very similar to glados when she is contemplating why she knows caroline
How about a video on Crash Twinsanity?
Beta64 seemed really uncomfortable this entire interview
why? he was laughing with her and everything :p
This was a great interview she seems like a very insightful interesting happy person

How fucking COOL would it be to put on your resume, "Voice of GLaDOS, Portal 1 and 2..."
“Hello and welcome to the aperture science computerated enrichment center”
As soon i saw this notification on my phone i said "Oh hell yes"
imagine being her kid and hearing: hello and again, welcome to the aperture science. that would be very wierd just hearing GLaDOS as you wake up
Yea! I've been waiting for this for ages!
At first glance, you may think the turrets sound like baby GLaDOS, because on the editor that Valve used to modify Ellen McLain's voice for GLaDOS, they moved the formant up much higher than they did for GLaDOS.
