This is the colonized mentality. Even if you hate communism, this is not an excuse for being ashamed of your ancestry. People who think like this should find some self-respect.

    • @joestki
      @joestki 2 года назад +24

Exactly! During the 1960 time it was hate and / or fear of the communist party but still associate with the country. You can still love your country even though you may not be a fan of the governing party. Now it is hate of the country and should I say the race too. I cannot say this is the result of colonial education because I was educated through the same system in 1950. During the British rule there was a "political department" which kept external influence at bay. True that it was biased towards Britain but there was no attempt to "de-Chinese" culture. Since the handover in 1997 that department was dissolved. I can only speculate it is the influence of some NGO into the schools, journalism, churches etc that cause a detachment from China. I have to say the hatred is partly caused by inferior complex when China mainland is doing so well.

I would add a point. As a Korean adopted at 7 and half. By White US couple and growing up (white, but clearly Korean). I can tell you it screws with your identity. And hearing this young Chinese boy, say he is ashamed of being Chinese. I get the idea that what I experienced growing up in the US and subtle pressures I was exposed to. And gave me similar sentiment. But I worked through somewhat. My early life experiences help me throw off the insane idea. I am most definitely East Asian and Korean.

It's a bit more understandable for your case cause you grew up in a western environment presumably surrounded mostly by white people, so it would be normal for you to identify more with being "white" growing up. You should be proud that you managed to reconnect with your roots and find pride in your ancestral heritage. It's not an easy thing to accomplish when you're in that kind of situation.
KK though is less excusable. The guy literally grew up in the motherland and had plenty of opportunities since childhood to immerse himself in his own ancestral culture, yet chooses to subscribe to the shallow western view of his own homeland vs his fellow countrymen.

The Idea of Western Democracy and what it actually is, are two very different things. Australia for example is a "Democracy", a nation under full state capture where corporations run the government and directly influence policy, A house built on lies and deception, endless division and hatred.
Yes we are afforded the opportunity to vote, regardless of who we vote for the same ruling elite establishment run the country, all that ever changes are usually small insignificant things, usually cultural issues. The Security state is running ramped, censorship and corruption. Inequality is rising, workers rights in serious decline, the media is all controlled by the government as there are very few independent outlets, they are usually swamped in defamation law suits served by the government rendering them bankrupt.
If you pay close attention to western democracies they are all moving towards Neo-Liberal societies, small governments, police/security/prison states with exported extreme violence. Just look at the present Geo-political issues world wide.
A lot of China's mainland media/social media suppression is in defense of USA political interference, people need to be clear about this issue.
Imagine Western Democracy applied to China??....... The world would be burnt to a crisp... "Democracy" isn't something you export.

He says the most important human right is the "freedom of speech", all the while insinuating (like all of the West does) that China doesn't have freedom of speech.
China has places to go, both online and offline, to criticize the government about regulations or their actions. I have also personally witnessed protests being held in China, AND have also seen thousands of people protesting about new laws or regulations on weibo.
The only difference here is that it doesn't turn into outright chaos AND if enough people speak up then changes are actually made, unlike in my country, The UK, or the USA where nothing ever changes.

In general most of HKers or perhaps some westerners misunderstood the definition of freedom of speech. HKers always think true freedom of speech is unconditional so that you can even mock your own national leaders, just like the US. Fortunately mainland holds a different understanding and version of freedom of speech. Gov leaders should be respected, in fact everyone should be respected indeed. And no freedom can be unconditional in any civilisation. That's also one of the fundamental of rule of law, as most HKers always mentioning from time to time.

The US doesn’t have unlimited speech either. So many protesters for BLM, labor movements, and Palestine have been beaten and arrested in the past 5 years. One thing that struck me when studying in HK in 2017-18 on the onset of the protests was the open impunity students expected on campus and the power/terror they had on administration that would NEVER be tolerated at an American university. Open threats and personal attacks on the housing administrator and photoshopped banners were plastered with his face on it. In the US, these students wouldn’t be negotiated and pleaded with. They would’ve been expelled with vandalism charges pressed. It’s interesting to me how much HK youth have bought into Western liberal propaganda. I’m not criticizing limits to free speech. The typical example is shouting fire in a crowded theatre or making gun threats to schools. There are reasons and other values to trade free speech against. I just want more critical thought as to what sacrifices are being made, what they’re made for, and fairness when judging different governments, so that they’re held to the same standard

Very interesting points, especially given the hindsight involved.
Yes, some people are overly focused on civil liberties while neglecting that social and economic well-being are fundamental human rights. Also people tend to bring up freedoms a lot, but legally speaking, regardless of country, no freedom is absolute. For example, even countries that are called "bastions of democracy" also crack down on protests violently, and there are a number of recent examples of this when they experienced anti-COVID restriction protests.
Interesting that the points about censorship were cut out of the interview given that this is a Singaporean outlet, and Singapore itself has also been criticized for censorship and being undemocratic by Western countries.

America has 21 articles in the constitution to define human right and civil right (more because of the banning slave system), some nation has 10 articles about human right, and some nation has only a few articles to protect human right.

My salute to Keybros for daring such a venture. You addressed all the issues VERY WELL! Well Singapore may say it's a "neutral" (a typical stance by many pragmatic nations) but in reality the government and the people are pro-West (generally).
Frankly CNA and SCMP are not much different but the latter is worse.
Your guest (KK) basically shares the same psychology of those "successful" children from poverty stricken families that refused to recognise their own parents and siblings out of shame and inferiority complex. There's nothing surprising of such phenomenon in psychology. It's simply a DISEASE born out from a weak mind.
Also nowadays "democracy" is simply freedom of our bodily "holes" and apertures, which is WRONG.
Ppl in many democratic nations are trapped in a vicious cycle of vote and regret. Nothing is done to truly improve people's live. Nothing is done to correct the unfair trade practices that favour the corporations, esp. in the S&P Agreement and the Consumer Act. Even if there are legal provisions, it's very expensive to pursue for most people. Hence most of the "unfairness" are swept under the carpet.

The young HKers never knew that back in 40s - 60s Hong Kong people spit on the street (that's why you may still see signs on the Star Ferry - Do not spit), young kids pee on the street (I did too as a child), no one queued for buses etc which today would be perceived as uncivilised behaviour. It took 1-2 generations to change that. In China there is still a huge gap between large cities and villages in every term including social behaviour.

Perhaps kk needs to have a dialogue with American Born Chinese to have more prospective, especially in light this Ukrainian situation. Many alternative media has been silenced and only pro war voices are circulated. With true human rights alternative voices is needed for truth and justice. Many protesting youths during ’19 only knew of Xinjiang and Tibet, yet silent of Libya Afghanistan Iraq Cuba etc. This shows where the influence comes from, and lacking talking points of true human rights. A new word came out of situation in Ukraine, cannon fodder. Are these youth being useful idiots as cannon fodders for the west to enrich oligarch’s pockets ?

I speak mandarin, cantonese, and hokkien. I just consider myself as a Han Chinese. Imagine being a Han Chinese but refused to be called Chinese. I wish young hong kongers and taiwanese can learn more about their history and culture. Can you imagine a Chinese born in the US but refused to be called a Chinese? What a disgrace. 好可悲啊。 Ccp has done many wonders to the development of China. Of course, you can hate the ccp all you want, but why hate the same blooded mainland people?
Hong kongers think they should be a whole different country just because they speak cantonese is absurd… they’re not different languages, they are different dialects. A country with rich history has many dialects. Just like how India has hindi, tamil, bengalli and more. Imagine wanting to split because of all these small differences. A country is not all about the politics, it’s about the history, culture, food, traditional music etc. Do they know that their ancestors came from mainland China? The mainland is where the history take place. Three kingdoms, Chinese new year, mid autumn festival, myth of Chang’e, journey to the west, fireworks, gun powder, Chinese ink wash painting, guzheng, hanfu and so much more. Can’t younger generation have a little more love for their own culture? Koreans are literally saying Hanfu copied Koreans clothing, why hong kongers don’t want to protect their traditional costumes? China is an ancient civilisation. Imagine saying India copied Pakistan. Hilarious. Hating ccp is fine. If you hate mainland people, you’re literally hating yourself then. Such a beautiful culture built by your ancestors, but you want to create a whole new identity and refused to be called Chinese. Seems like future isn’t very bright for China, youngsters these days appreciate Japanese and Koreans culture more than the original culture. Not to mention Korean took Chinese culture passively and claimed Chinese are stealing Korean culture. Hope these youngster learn how to love their own culture. Proud of being a Chinese does not mean you’re pro communism. Some hong kongers and taiwanese needs to chill. To hong kongers and taiwanese, china = communism. But they forgot China has beautiful traditional culture, clothing, musics, art, philosophy ETC.

Hi Keybros, i just got this spisode forwarded to me today in 2023. You guys are fabulous! Your analysis, insights on the HK & Mainland issues should continue. I hope i will see interviews with Taiwanese youth, or of any age as well.
The colonized minds can truly be debilitating and trumanizing! Lack of confidence to identify oneself as Chinese living overseas must and can be rectified by having a support group of fellow “ cultural kids or adults” to discuss these issues of “identity”. One can be so proud to see China’s rise and actually rectify their confused pyche. One can read up real history, travel to China, get to know China’s great civilization. One can definitely need to explore the “foreign” country’s culture, people, learn the language well and have freinds of the host country. Anyhow, from my experience, the long and short of it is…know thyself…East-West.
You guys are exmemplanry. Thank you for being so conscious of the issue. Indeed I would like to know more how well these Hong Kongers do in the UK! Cheers!👍☮️

I even saw an older white foreigner spitting in Thailand, maybe he got cold n had to I think but he did it not as carefree as Asian elderly 😅

Civil propriety in the West has deteriorated quite remarkably over the last 50 years, especially in the UK. One can find people spitting quite often especially among sports "stars" on the pitches and the golf courses even during televised competitions. The genteel society has gone the way of the dinosaurs. Sadly, coarseness and crassness are the order of the day.
