It's funny how they talked about firefighters because, to me, Luke's the Wan show firefighter. Each time Linus says something that can, and most definitely will, be misinterpreted, he stats clarifying immediately. Sometimes Linus doesn't even realize what Luke is doing until he points it out.
Dan has been a great addition to the show, his background presence somehow has managed to increase my enjoyment of the show with his small off hand remarks.
@@ajbp95 it was very similar except absolutely none of the transitions into sponsor spots worked and we didn't get amazing comments like "I hate it here" when Linus is being annoying 😂
You and your team literally saved my life. When I was with cancer in hospital, I was watching videos on your channel, which helped me a lot to cope with my new reality. I am ok now and still occasionally visit the channel. I love it. Thank you for what you created and do. ❤️
Linus need to install pneumatic tubes between the buildings so they can transport small stuff like cables and adapters in 20 seconds instead of 20 minutes.
The only real problem with this is the buildings are quite separated and there are other businesses in between that he would have to get permission from to do this. As well as clearing it with the city of Surrey which is currently a little dysfunctional so the approval will take its sweet time even if they do give it. They also might deny it so either way there would be major hurdles to get through
Pneumatic tubes are quite a thing to install and simply an outdated system. If they really wanted a fast way to transport small parts in 2023... In drone would most likely be a better option in pretty every aspect (besides during the night or bad weather)
@@avalanche1990 Those are some great points. Maybe they do it as a "temporary proof of concept" video like they did with the fibre run. Instead of actual pneumatics they have some duct tubing and a mechanical ferret.
@@stefan514 See, now you've got me thinking they do a hacky proof of concept video for pneumatics, and then they come back a couple of months later all like "that was a stupid idea, but now we're going to do the same thing with drones!"
While I agree, it is a daunting task to find someone to hand over the reigns of the best and biggest thing you have built. It's not just about their ability, but also the fit into the culture that is ingrained into the company and partially responsible for the success and only changing the demonstrably bad parts. Not an small ask.
Linus should just have 2 hats, one saying "Visionary" and one "Owner" that he keeps on him at all times and switches around depending on role. Would make for a great video :D
Needs to be a digital hat, with a pushbutton remote to switch "modes"/screens between "Owner", "CVO", and another flashing screen that says "Trust me bro".... 🤣😂🤣
1:00:59 agreed, very proud 👏 stepping back in your own company sure isn’t easy. But it’s so cool you get to focus more on creative and you have the support in place to run ur business where you want it to go.
The breakdown of a filming session @5:48 was a phenomenal explanation of your filming dilemmas 😂 really shows your depth of understanding for content that makes your business so successful!
Pretty sure he's talking about the mini pc build they did the other day. Could tell he wasn't too happy with the prep judging by a few of his comments during the vid😂
Almost seems like if they had a “Bible” of a format they need to stick to, that should consistently be a thing taught to new employees when they start. Possibly by the ones already working there.
It’s so cool luke and his brother both decided to become fire fighters. Luke is pretty good at putting out linus’ fires so his brother has some big shoes to fill
SUGGESTION: Linus, since your people are new (and probably not used to your process even if they have processes they've learned), why not have them storyboard the script. This way, they're not just reading the script, but trying to create frames, it gets them into the mindset of, "how are we going to shoot this". Again, the storyboards don't have to be anywhere near the level of art someone like Sarah would generate. Stick people and boxes work FINE. And you can then review the storyboard and say "Yes, no, how about this, have you thought about doing this." And with the storyboard, everyone (Cameras, lighting, sound, etc.) will know not only their part, but what to expect of the rest of the crew to prevent people tripping over everyone.
@@TheOriginalJAX They frame shots, but from a script perspective. That's why the vlogs are always the worst for editors, because they'll have HOURS of unscripted footage to work through.
It is possible if both of them are able to separate their duties and egos, but it can also be extremely difficult and stressful to do for more than a few months.
Once you get into the c-suite positions the attitude is very different. It's not so much reporting to as much as you're a team and work with each other as equals. At least that's been my experience working for someone that's in that position. I imagine it's not too far off from that at LTT given the way everyone does seem to actually enjoy being there and enjoy working towards a common overall goal.
CEO reports to linus because linus is the owner and head of the "board", so to speak. The ceos job is to navigate Linus' company for him, so even though the ceo would be directing linus on a day to day basis and will have some power over what linus does, he will ultimately be working to achieve linus' vision through the method and means that taren believes is best. If linus were to ultimately disagree with him, there's nothing preventing him from firing taren under whatever terms and conditions the contract allows. Linus still has his 51%.
With the Noctua screwdriver, I think having the center body being a different colour than the selector ring and end cap just looks better. Especially since Noctua is the brown fan inside of the tan frame, it just seems like the right choice
Thank you, LTT and crew! The hard work you guys do, and ultimately for our beloved Tech community, is deeply appreciated. We understand that it not without cost or sacrifice. We honor your hard work with deep gratitude. The fact that Linus acknowledges (or begrudgingly accepts, rather) the fact that he needs to be managed; that he needs a "parent", or guide, shows that he's grown internally (wisdom) as a person along with his company. I can see how Luke is proud of him.
Me and my coworkers tried to tell my old boss at the cabinet shop he needed to do pretty much exactly what Linus is doing and he could never give up the control and instead fired his wife and started doing a bunch of cocaine to try to manage everything and ran the place into the ground after being in business for like 15 years cause he couldn't deal with managing everyone and being the main contact with clients and having to do all the financial and paperwork side of things after firing his wife cause he didn't realize how much she was doing and always tried to get her to get a job somewhere else cause he didn't think she was doing anything before their divorce. So it's pretty awesome seeing someone actually able to accept that they need that help before crashing and burning from the stress
@@asgdhgsfhrfgfd1170 I feel like Linus's ego is huge, but the ego is placed at a position where it benefits everything he built up and everyone he hired (Aka his company, and not himself). He doesn't really care about the prestige of being CEO, but he cares way more about the prestige & reputation of his company as a whole.
Kids having a 100 dollar a month Roblox allowance seems crazy to me; I couldn't even convince my mom to give me 5 dollars a month for Runescape membership growing up and I had to beg/pay another classmate to pay for my membership since I didn't have credit card access. This also ended up resulting in that other kid stealing my account soooo yeah. There's also tons and tons of gambling for kids and it's been around forever; arcades, card packs, etc etc
God bless Paysafecard. Just a quick detour to the gas station after school and I could buy all the stuff I wanted in the crappy free to play shooter without my parents ever knowing 😂
same in habbo - but to be fair that got me into programming pretty damn young. I cut a close families friends lawn for access to her phone to dial in and charge the cost to her phone bill a few times. RIP!
With cheap psu testing I would like to see it done on multiple orders of the same psu. Be sure that the one you got didn't "win the psu lottery". I could see there being higher variations from order to order
Hey there Linus. What you are talking about is a comprehensive operations guide that anyone can pick up and you get repeatable results. It’s a ton of work but when you have one, it completely transforms your onboarding of new staff. It also allows for dynamic cross training so folks that may have a different but similar responsibilities can easily step in and fill gaps in personnel. If you want a quick but informative read on this, find the book the E-Myth. There’s one chapter that very effectively lays out the concept and it may help. Also, and I run into this ALL THE TIME in my business, anytime you are going to drop knowledge, get it on camera. A DJI Osmo with mic kit will fit in your pocket and while it won’t be “LMG” production quality, you will have the necessary archive with the dialog which is what you really need anyway. Hope that helps Cheers AGW
Being a German I am once again very, very, veeeeeery happy that we're one of the most data privacy centered folks in the entire world. I could not live a single peaceful second with this TV in my living room. And while I love smart home stuff the only things I buy are running on a local system with zero access to the internet. I like my privacy, thank you. And I'm hopeful that in 10-20 years we'll get there with solid EU regulations.
Greetings from Germany too, I am excited about voting in spring 2024 As frustrating as EU regulations regularly start off they tend to improve over time.
Privacy vise, eu regulations are best in the world by a lot. Problem is that many things are hard to regulate. You sign a contract about any product and noone reads it, and you cannot have 10 tickboxes.
OK. I got to that part. Yeah, it sounds like they wanted to enjoy it but realized theirs a lot of systems and got confused. Hopefully they try it again, it's such an enjoyable game.
Linus at 3:31:00 Is a great example of a good manager. While I've not been a manager, I have been a team lead in an industry that is recognized as being one of the more dangerous jobs in the US. Having been on both sides of that equation, I greatly respect the approach Linus takes and how he illustrates it. It is the approach I always did the best I could to take, and to be honest, as long as it wasn't regarding anything that could get someone hurt, I was generally pretty willing to go with how others wanted it done once I made sure they had the appropriate understanding of the elements in play and skills needed to do it safely. That being said, I've been very fortunate in having co-workers who were motivated, engaged, and intelligent.
I'm glad that people are still talking about Titanfall 2. it is by far my favorite fps game/story even almost 7 years later. I still keep coming back to play every couple months just because of how good the gameplay is.
@@jeramyneeley3351 I despise billboards, they are a stain on the public landscape and an assault on my eyes. If in-home ads become a thing I will do things I can't legally say outloud.
@Dark Pixel I don't really despise billboards. I'm not into them. I wanted to, but haven't scaled and sat to enjoy the view from the heights of one. I do feel like San Francisco and New York definitely have a greater density of them. I don't recall one that wasn't as integrated into the city scape or specifically blocking a view. When I think of billboards, I think of road trips with the family as a kid or movie poster ones that are more artistic. I think mostly, I ignore them, don't see them the way Linus doesn't see online ads. I think the most useful, wait those nothing for ### of miles, warnings were signs not billboards, I guess. The most used billboards, in my experience, were those gas, fast food, hotels at this exit, so you'd wait until it was the one(s) you wanted to get off. These days with maps, GPS you probably already routed or look up when you got hungry. So maybe the billboards don't tempt people to unplanned exits anymore? I can't really recall actually going out and buying something, hiring someone or even picking that as the movie that I watched, after seeing it on a billboard, though. Even with the road trip food, gas, hotel, they're just a sign post of something I was already looking for and ignored, when I wasn't. Online ads (especially egregious dark pattern) , stadium ad screens, the names of stadiums changed to current Corp owner ads, in game ads (& the nightmare fuel.
@@bipbop3121I've had a few billboards genuinely help me find somewhere to buy something I couldn't find. A lot of local gun stores and gunsmiths near me just don't show up on Google maps, but billboards for em let me figure out that they even exist.
Happy for you Linus! Not only being so open with your community. But being free to make your own decisions, making the best decisions for you, your business, brand, and staff.
I love WAN show and LMG as a whole because of how Linus comes off as genuine and says what he means without much filter. I feel that I can trust that what he says is his honest opinion and that he is a man of consistent character.
That's the advantage from our perspective of his near-constant hot takes - it indicates his lack of a filter, showing how bad he is at censoring his speech. So at least we can be reasonably confident that what he says is what he really thinks. 👍
I totally understand why the Labs aren't telling you about their updates more frequently. As a developer I won't tell anyone until the product is stable and near finish, caz I am always busy trying to fix shits and explaining wip shits that may not work is just additional work
I love how, after another great WAN show, watching the read comments .zip through and Linus saying "thats a problem", thats like the best cliffhanger for next week's exciting episode! 😅
Dear LTT clip channel people: I REALLY need 1:50:29 to 1:51:21 as a clip. I have people I need to share it with and they won't watch it because "omg this is FOUR HOURS LONG." That is all, thank you!
If the TV gets mass produced in enough homes, even if you value your privacy and don't buy the products that monitor you, you ever want to meet up at a friend's place, you'll need to either ask an awkward question of if they have such a device i their living room, or take a chance of getting profiled as a house visitor. In that ecosystem, it'll be hard to get away, even if you aren't a customer.
There are so many more difficult situations like that. I don't know all the regulations in north America, but this most certainly is not gonna fly in Europe. Something called consumer protection. Or to say it a bit more bluntly, consumers (people) aren't all smart enough to oversee what they are getting themselves into. I am seriously flabbergasted that it's even allowed to begin with. This is also the point I don't agree with Linus. Yes, people doing this already anyway, that's completely true. But the main question is if you should protect people from it. For the same reason you have the obligation to protect people from hurting themselves.
@@p_mouse8676 As an north american, I'm suprised that privacy is going away just as fast as AI is being developed. I've been more aware of my online privacy recently and starting taking measures to prevent this sort of thing, but I should've stayed ignorant because it seems like the problem started escalating around the same time. If you were to go around and ask random consumers, the majority would tell you they don't care they are being spied on, the 2nd biggest would say they didn't know, the 3rd are conspiracy theorists that would say your 3D printer has a camera an mic (or other things that obviously won't have specific spying technology in it) that will read your facial expressions when you aren't looking. I feel like very few people actually care about how closely they are being tracked.
@@Yellowredstone I think the issue is not if you're spied on. That is what it is. The issue is what happens with that data? Or worse, what happens with that data when systems are being hacked? Second is that you don't have any control over how peoples minds and ideas are being controlled. There are some countries in EU, like Germany, who can tell from history that such things didn't go so well. Why would it go better this time? It's just waiting for real serious problems are gonna happen. At this rate, including the fast development of AI (which is pretty awesome btw), this WILL happen at some point I think. That's not being negative, that's being realistic I think as well.
@@p_mouse8676 I do understand your point of view, but the problem with data is how dishonest corporations are using the data for. Like Tesla taking videos, Microsoft decrypting your emails, or Anker sending in your info to police. My point of view is like the Right to Repair movement where people want to buy their stuff and actually be able to own it. I want to be able to have my data and choose what I want to do with it. Although most of it will likely just go into advertisement, I don't want an external entity to know what I an doing in my apartment. If I don't have an account with them they have no reason to know what my email is, you know? It's the overtaking of informating they don't need is what I have a problem with.
@@Yellowredstone I think we just totally agree with each other, just misreading a bit, haha :) ;) I was only saying that the problem here could be far more dangerous than just "owning your data". But yes, I also agree with that!
allow the writers and the engineers eat lunch together, there's often some personality and sometimes "society class" differences between teams and breaking those barriers and purposely setting up time teams can just randomly interact is a huge soft factor in building good design processes.
it feels cool seeing people who are noteable talking about slapshot rebound. In the last 3 years I have cast over 1000 competetive games in it and and its predecesor so seeing it finally get some traction is rewarding.
Don't think it's highlighted enough, but DLL always saying not to do merch messages unless you have the funds. Understanding it's a pricey way to communicate but caring enough to advise against doing so if your circumstances aren't permitting. Literally showing care for their viewers, so thank you.
Better work environment definitely becomes more important as soon as basic costs are covered. I just switched to a job with 12% less base pay and no more bonus system for that exact reason, to get out of a burnout hussle BS factory.
Exactly. There is a cutoff when you can afford your basic needs and some nice stuff from time to time. At that point more money doesn't change things alot. Flexible worktimes, homeoffice and stuff will.
2:34:00 - Interesting, the material handler positions around my city for warehousing have that exact dynamic. $21.01 for a position where you feel okay being there, or $29 for one where you feel like trash the whole time.
I often fall asleep to the WAN Show, and catch up later on what I missed. I was wondering why I woke up in the middle of the video still playing, and then 3:12:59 happened. I can't stop laughing
Big respect to Linus, the new role sounds much more up his alley. Good to see a familiar face who he trusts is taking the executive role. Really glad that the long term thinking isn't going anywhere.
The ~2:22:00 co-op debate thingie is quite interesting to me... Like the short and unrestricted co-op experience is the reason games like Minecraft and Roblox has gotten so insanely popular, the reason they've stayed popular is due to good management and realistic planning ahead. Personally I've noticed a lot of Browser-based games grow recently, which are becoming increasingly more viable with more optimized frameworks, growing Vulkan support and better implementation of web apps. I actually think we might see a revolution at some point of major game studios investing proper money into a browser-based experience. Like, we have the technology and indie studios are already making a profit off of it.
With regards to the less toxic workplace; I've moved from a very toxic workplace to a non toxic one with lower pay. The reduced stress and mesurable reduced blood pressure makes the pay cut very much worth it! What i;ve lost in wages, I've gained in support form the company. If anything, I'm paid more considering the lack of commute too.
Glad you're in a good mood about the role change Linus. For the privacy stuff I hate how things have become, I get your point but seriously I do everything I can to get around the trackers and everything else. I don't mind doing survey after survey on videos on RUclips but I get annoyed because they don't ever ask why. They just want the most generic information that might be great for figuring out analytics but tells you nothing about why things are going the way they are which makes me think they obviously don't care as long as "line go up" in quarterly earnings meetings.
Can you please show the replies side by side with the incoming MM? It's almost impossible to keep track of the questions and the replies that come a while later, while also paying attention to what L&L are saying.
There was something like 660 merch messages during the show, they did move to trying to have the ones being replied to on screen at the time, but I guess some nights it's just tough to keep up.
@@benwu7980 right now they show one after the other, mm first and then after that the answer.. the written answer that shows at the bottom not the spoken reply
The data tracking is why I scoff when people criticize the cost of something like the ReMarkable writing tablet. I bought one because it does what I need a tablet to do, without monitoring me at all.
RE: 2:38:00 A good way to put it is, once you pay a living wage, you have a choice of either paying them more or creating a really great working environment, and Linus values the working environment way more.
Process mapping and documentation is something even giant engineering firms struggle with. Mapping processes is a huge part of my job which is how I afford all that LTTstore merchandise
Well, to be fair, they struggle because its a "giant" firm. The smaller the company, the easier to implement the documentation. But documentation is boring, so people will be less motivated to it
The real fear I have with the Ad TV is that in a few years that is going to be the only option available for the working class. We've already been seeing this shift. The average person would love more privacy but they can barely make ends meet so they either give up their privacy and mental health or they opt out and eventually lose access to something most people have. I can totally see a similar business model for food come up. Sit and watch an hour of ads and you get a sandwich! Then a few years after that we hundreds of kids of low income families in school cafeteria watch ads so that they get a lunch ticket.
Also, as someone who needs to make more money per hour, yeah, I totally agree with Linus. Good work environment with good coworkers is more important than simple pay. It just is.
I've seen this happen a few times during my life. The decision isn't what proves Linus' point. The next 6-12 months will be. Not having a finger directly on the pulse of your brain and heart child anymore isn't for everyone, although it might seem like it when making such a decision. Best of luck! Hoping for a bit more enterprise oriented content - maybe on a new channel. You for sure got the competencies. :-)
Linus, you keep mentioning it takes two, you should really try Unraveled Two. It's kinda similar and really fun to play with your kids or s.o. The characters make you feel very nostalgic for some reason.
Can I just say that all the comments at the end was super helpful in finding your own Merch Message! Definitely keep this, because otherwise there's no good way to know what reply you got on your merch message unless you pay close attention to the message box the entire live show...
Would be cool if they had a page on the LTT Store website after the stream closes with all the merch messages and the response or RUclips time-stamp they were answered (assuming the system could do so automatically based on when they archive them).
2:07:00 As someone who had a monthly allowance of 400 euros between the age of 11 and 19, I entirely agree that this does NOT teach budgeting and creates a lot of bad habits that took me years to overcome. All you do is spend it all. On the bright side, i did use most of it to buying poorer kids in school things they wanted or needed (grew up in a fairly poor area) be it friends or not, and not a single cent of it was spent on drugs, in retrospect not sure how, but hey. A lot of parties though. Should have invested it, but hey, 20/20.
Referring to the discussion involving the chat misinterpreting what Linus says. It all basically comes down to this: Linus says something that means one thing, but he has an implication of meaning a whole different thing. People like Luke and Dan and etc.... are going to have previous knowledge and expectations on how Linus speaks and implies certain things and so they are going to easily understand what Linus actually means, and that leaves everyone else (us, the viewer) to be confused and told our (rightful) concerns are for nothing just because Linus refuses to say what he actually means. We don't know Linus personally, its unfair to expect people to have personal knowledge of how he acts and speaks in order not to be attacked and told we are dumb
You know. One thing I'm going to miss from Wan Show after the new CEO takes over is Linus not having to fight with chat as often because chat doesn't understand business. I know I'm getting old when I'm enjoying Linus talk about business headaches rather than tech stuff 😂
LINUS, you need a training program for these departments. And it has to be reviewed on a regular basis. Maybe every three to five years it gets reviewed and updated. Maybe it's a yearly thing. And the thing about is you have employees you've trained. You can task them with creating this content and updating it as you go. This is something big companies do. Some of them are required by law to do this. One of the things that isn't mentioned much outside of the healthcare community in the US is that HIPAA requires staff be trained and retrained every year. The Office of Inspector Generals (Another Federal thing part of the US Government, except they report to Congress, not the President) also requires any healthcare and "healthcare ajacent" companies to not only train in HIPAA, but also the Whistleblower's Act and laws (plural) regarding kickbacks, fraud, and waste. But the brilliant thing is, YOU DON'T HAVE TO DO IT YOURSELF! You have writers, editors, camera operators, gaffers, etc. who are all already trained on your processes. Get them together to work out how to film the "how to" videos and also add writeups to the knowledge base. You have Floatplane to host the videos. Sounds like Luke has a "how to" repository built, but you could always grab the wiki software to create one for the various companies. You can even include things like the employment regulations that apply to them, harassment training videos, company expectations, code of conduct, what to do in emergencies, hazardous materials handling and cleanup, etc. Heck, if you need help, I am more than willing to go. Did part of that when I worked at my companies ITSM Service Desk. (We had to generate our own knowledge base because many IT departments were siloed at the time.)
The way Linus just broke down the concepts behind his videos, wow. I knew he was good at this whole RUclips thing, but turns out he is really good at it.
11:38 the whole story you just described on how you trained those four… you should've basically recorded that whole thing (a recreation of how you described it). Upload that to a KB to be viewed in training and also as a reference later on. And also build up an outline on topics discussed.
please please don't stop making videos man you taught me so much and got me going back to college, you are the chit love you man btw I'm 50yr old and excited to get back in school
For years now: "Call Mom" - audio transcribes correctly, shows the text on the screen. Turns on Mom's Tv. "Navigate Home" - ditto on recognition, maps shows there is only one thing I have listed as Home. Sometimes even says "Ok, Home. Lets go." Consistently sends me to the nearest Home Depot if it is closer to me than my house.
I'm happy for you Linus, if this is an upgrade for you it's better for everyone. The energy that you show in every video could only get better if unleashed free, without major concerns about every side aspect of the thing. Best wishes from Italy.
The Telly TV is almost a word for word recreation of the Telescreen from 1984... except it's controlled by a profit seeking company. I disagree with your take on this. It's dystopian.
Two solutions for dealing with overdraft fees. One, have the money siphon from your savings account. It will charge a fee, but not as high as an overdraft fee. Two, ask your bank if you can turn off overdraft protection. In that case, the transaction will not go through and it's probably best you carry some cash with you.
Im an engineer and we have technical groups formed by experts on a certain topic and people that work on that stuff. Through periodic meetings knowledge is shared and guidelines are updated. These groups are also available to anyone to ask any questions they may have. Thats basically what you need
Linus removing himself from the CEO position is VERY similar to how barstool sports evolved. Dave Portnoy eventually switched from running his company to hiring a CEO for the business side of things and taking ownership over the content side of things. Smart decision by Linus. It'll reduce his burnout, allow him to be part of what makes the company so great (the content) while removing himself from the mundane tasks that he was starting to get jaded about. I'm expecting a refreshed & energized tech company for the coming years. Congrats Linus!
I’d watched LTT content before but it was WAN show that really brought me into the whole channel. I love the honesty, the thoughts/opinions and behind the scenes insight into all. It’s a huge part of the whole brand for me at least and I’ll continue watching as long as you guys keep making it 😁.
In regards to the snacks versus compensation non-debate; It's not like anyone at this company is making anything near minimum wage. It's much more likely that employees are properly compensated above similar positions in the industry already. Even if the upward salary mobility was average or below (it likely isn't) the fact that employees can enjoy their working time is a much stronger factor than being upset that you're making 200% minimum wage instead of 205%.
When the firefighting discusion began I KNEW where it would go. It's sad to have to be so PRECISE with language nowadays to explain something as simple as that the physic world does not care for your sensibilites. BTW loved the rowing team anecdote.
As much as the free tv creeps me out, I can't help but agree that we definitely saw this coming a long time ago. I wonder if you could hack or mod it with a different display driver to use it just as a display lol
(I know it's been a year sorry) but did you miss the whole "they charge you 500 dollars and you keep it" if you disconnect it from the internet or stop it from tracking your data
Great summation for a training video. Think of the first one as a dry run have someone record this second time for the camera class. 11:00 previous to this time
This might help for Linus’ class on shooting efficiencies best practices. Title: Shooting A Roll and B Roll in a Linus Tech Tips-style RUclips Video: A Comprehensive Training Class for Support Staff Introduction: Welcome to the comprehensive training class on shooting A Roll and B Roll in a Linus Tech Tips-style RUclips video. In this class, we will cover the necessary camera techniques and usage that support staff, from camera operators to assistants, should be familiar with. We will explore the importance of shooting A Roll and B Roll, and why certain camera techniques are necessary to create engaging and professional-looking videos. Section 1: Understanding A Roll and B Roll 1.1 Definition and Purpose: A Roll: Primary footage that captures the main subject or action of the video. B Roll: Additional footage that supplements the A Roll, providing context, visual interest, and variety. 1.2 Importance of A Roll and B Roll: A Roll: Essential for conveying information, demonstrating products, or explaining concepts. B Roll: Enhances storytelling, adds visual interest, supports narration, and covers transitions or cuts in the main footage. Section 2: Camera Usage for A Roll 2.1 Camera Selection: Choose the appropriate camera based on the desired quality, resolution, and features required for the A Roll footage. For example, a high-quality mirrorless camera with 4K capabilities might be suitable for capturing the main subject with exceptional detail. 2.2 Camera Settings: Optimize settings for exposure, white balance, and focus to ensure clear and well-balanced footage. Going over the script can help identify any specific requirements for the A Roll shots. For instance, if the script mentions a detailed close-up of a motherboard, adjusting the camera's focus and aperture settings accordingly will ensure the intricate details are captured. 2.3 Framing and Composition: Position the subject within the frame, considering the rule of thirds, leading lines, and visual balance. Use creative framing techniques to make the shots visually appealing and engaging. For example, framing the subject within the frame of a computer monitor to showcase the tech being discussed. 2.4 Camera Movement: Determine whether static shots or camera movement (panning, tilting, tracking) will best capture the action. Use camera movement strategically to follow the subject, highlight important details, or create dynamic shots. For instance, smoothly tracking the host as they move through a tech showcase or utilizing a steady pan to reveal a newly unboxed gadget. Section 3: Camera Usage for B Roll 3.1 Variety and Context: Capture a wide range of shots to provide context and visual interest, such as establishing shots, close-ups, and cutaways. Creatively explore different angles, perspectives, and focal lengths to keep the B Roll engaging. For example, capturing a top-down shot of a tech workspace or a close-up of a keyboard being used during a review. 3.2 Detail Shots: Focus on capturing close-ups of relevant objects, components, or actions to highlight specific details. These shots are crucial for demonstrating product features or showcasing intricate processes. For instance, capturing a macro shot of a CPU cooler being installed or a slow-motion shot of a fan spinning. 3.3 Seamless Transition: Shoot overlapping shots during transitions to ensure smooth cuts between A Roll and B Roll footage. Anticipate where the A Roll will pause or continue to ensure seamless transitions. For example, capturing a transition shot of Linus reaching for a product and then seamlessly cutting to him holding it in the next frame. Section 4: Collaboration and Communication 4.1 Coordination with Host: Establish clear communication with the host to anticipate their actions, cues, and lines. Ensure the camera operator is prepared to follow the host's movements and capture essential shots. For example, knowing when the host will demonstrate a product feature and being ready to capture it from the best angle. 4.2 Offscreen Assistant: The assistant should be ready to hand off necessary items to the host, such as props, tools, or devices. Ensure smooth transitions by coordinating with the host's timing and actions. For example, handing the host a smartphone just as they mention it in the script, allowing for a seamless transition from discussing it to showcasing its features. 4.3 Teamwork and Adaptability: Encourage collaboration among the support staff to ensure everyone is in sync and aware of the shot requirements. Be prepared to adapt quickly to unforeseen changes or spontaneous actions. For example, if the host decides to demonstrate an impromptu experiment, the camera operator and assistant should be ready to capture and support the footage accordingly. Additional Linus Tech Tips Practices: Engage in pre-production meetings to discuss shot requirements and creative approaches. Incorporate dynamic camera movements like zooming or sliding shots for added visual interest. Experiment with different camera angles, such as low or high angles, to add variety and impact to the shots. Utilize slow-motion shots for dramatic effect or to emphasize specific actions or details. Employ quick cuts and snappy editing techniques to maintain a fast-paced and energetic video style. Conclusion: Mastering the art of shooting A Roll and B Roll is vital for creating captivating Linus Tech Tips-style RUclips videos. By understanding the purpose of each roll, employing proper camera techniques, coordinating effectively with the host and support staff, and incorporating creative approaches, we can deliver exceptional video production support. Remember, practice, attention to detail, and a willingness to adapt are key to producing engaging and professional-looking videos.
When watching the video at first, I thought Taran came back as the CEO, made me do a double take.

First merch messages timestamp seems to be off :)
Timestamp Guy is the real CEO!
Eyyy welcome back Noki!
It's funny how they talked about firefighters because, to me, Luke's the Wan show firefighter. Each time Linus says something that can, and most definitely will, be misinterpreted, he stats clarifying immediately. Sometimes Linus doesn't even realize what Luke is doing until he points it out.
You mean like that hard R incident 😂
he has to cuz he knows how offended muricans get
@@demacherius1 lmaoo I was just watching that
@@Freestyle80 well said. Impatience combined with lack of thought is a great recipe for stupid reactions.
@@Freestyle80 I'm offended that you think it's only and/or all of us 'Muricans that get offended all the time.
He should have remained as CEO but as Chief Entertainment Officer
😂
that's... a regulatory nightmare I suppose...
Dan has been a great addition to the show, his background presence somehow has managed to increase my enjoyment of the show with his small off hand remarks.
Bell is great as well, Bell in particular has a better 'producer voice'.🎙
I started watching after Dan arrived, so I don't know how it was before, but he is a great part of the show!
@@ajbp95 welcome on!
@@ajbp95 it was very similar except absolutely none of the transitions into sponsor spots worked and we didn't get amazing comments like "I hate it here" when Linus is being annoying 😂
@@xpodx Nowhere, this was just a comment about how great Dan is.
Instead of actual pneumatics they have some duct tubing and a mechanical ferret.
but what about carbon pneumatic nanotubes XD
@@stefan514 See, now you've got me thinking they do a hacky proof of concept video for pneumatics, and then they come back a couple of months later all like "that was a stupid idea, but now we're going to do the same thing with drones!"
I have to say, I'm surprised this didn't happen sooner. I feel like the CVO role is much better suited for Linus, and I hope it works well for him!
The other video features Linus pouting about the guy he wanted as CEO being employed above their budget whenever their budget allowed
Let’s see how he envisions how to squeeze more ads into a 10 min video
Linus? Delegating? Impossible!
While I agree, it is a daunting task to find someone to hand over the reigns of the best and biggest thing you have built. It's not just about their ability, but also the fit into the culture that is ingrained into the company and partially responsible for the success and only changing the demonstrably bad parts. Not an small ask.
@@Schaelpy Did you watch the other video?
Linus should just have 2 hats, one saying "Visionary" and one "Owner" that he keeps on him at all times and switches around depending on role. Would make for a great video :D
I agree
Nah, have one that he can turn inside out, with one of those roles printed on each side.
Dude, that would be a great series!
Needs to be a digital hat, with a pushbutton remote to switch "modes"/screens between "Owner", "CVO", and another flashing screen that says "Trust me bro".... 🤣😂🤣
So lucid dreamer 😂
This auto played while I slept
SAME!
For some reason it always does with my RUclips app. But I dont want to listen to Linus.
My last year has been wan show autoplaying while i sleep lol
And it's always wan show and almost always this episode

1:00:59 agreed, very proud 👏 stepping back in your own company sure isn’t easy. But it’s so cool you get to focus more on creative and you have the support in place to run ur business where you want it to go.
The breakdown of a filming session @5:48 was a phenomenal explanation of your filming dilemmas 😂 really shows your depth of understanding for content that makes your business so successful!
Pretty sure he's talking about the mini pc build they did the other day. Could tell he wasn't too happy with the prep judging by a few of his comments during the vid😂
@@Russh1 I thought the same thing!
Almost seems like if they had a “Bible” of a format they need to stick to, that should consistently be a thing taught to new employees when they start. Possibly by the ones already working there.
Listening to Linus getting excited over things never fails to make me happy
As Chief Vision Officer, Linus should be providing free eye exams to LTT employees. Their eyesight should now be better than 20/20!! 😜
To the top gentlemen
That’s awesome. LTX needs to have a vision center for the chief vision officer- maybe get a sponsorship from an optics provider
So 6/6 vision ;-)
It’s so cool luke and his brother both decided to become fire fighters. Luke is pretty good at putting out linus’ fires so his brother has some big shoes to fill
2:33:00 the fact the phrase "you couldnt pay me enough to work there" exists is proof that a good work environment has a dollar amount
if you COUDN'T pay enough, there is no amount...
how do you get the exact opposite meaning from that sentence?
If you stored your soldering supplies in the water bottle, you could have a flux capacitor.
*sparks joy*

SUGGESTION: Linus, since your people are new (and probably not used to your process even if they have processes they've learned), why not have them storyboard the script. This way, they're not just reading the script, but trying to create frames, it gets them into the mindset of, "how are we going to shoot this". Again, the storyboards don't have to be anywhere near the level of art someone like Sarah would generate. Stick people and boxes work FINE. And you can then review the storyboard and say "Yes, no, how about this, have you thought about doing this." And with the storyboard, everyone (Cameras, lighting, sound, etc.) will know not only their part, but what to expect of the rest of the crew to prevent people tripping over everyone.
ponysmasher has a good video on storyboarding "Communicating your vision as a director"
seems like it might be worth scheduling a full walk-through before the shoot so everyone can see it, at least when everyone is new
@@TheOriginalJAX They frame shots, but from a script perspective. That's why the vlogs are always the worst for editors, because they'll have HOURS of unscripted footage to work through.
So this is how its going to work?
Every boss reports to the CEO.
Employer-Linus reports to the CEO
CEO reports to Owner-Linus
they will probably report to Yvonne more
It is possible if both of them are able to separate their duties and egos, but it can also be extremely difficult and stressful to do for more than a few months.
I don't see an issue with that!
Thank you Tech Jesus, Jay Paul, and UFD Tech , who labor, take time away from your families, your recreation, and reach into your own pockets just to help the consumers and enthusiasts like me.
I am very passionate about tech, and I feel like you guys "raised me right" and share my uncompromising integrity.
You all are solid gold. How fortunate we are. With much love and sincerely, Heather.
The fact that Linus acknowledges (or begrudgingly accepts, rather) the fact that he needs to be managed; that he needs a "parent", or guide, shows that he's grown internally (wisdom) as a person along with his company. I can see how Luke is proud of him.
The title is "appropriate adult"
@@asgdhgsfhrfgfd1170 I really appreciate that we have potatos, corn dogs, and noodles in this comment chain
@@noodlelynoodle. Just wait until the bots show up...
I feel the runescape part so much 😂 it was tough back then now i cant be convinced to pay out of my pocmet.
Agreed. I also had to convince my mom to pay for Runescape back in the day. What a time to be alive.
I tried to get my parents to pay for WoW back in the days. Not a chance.
Now Linus finally has time for a 24 hours WAN show. Also Kids having a 100 dollar a month Roblox allowance seems crazy to me
$100 million, bro
That's the relative equivalent to me buying a candy bar.
That's how you get out of starch million-dollar child brats
Maybe it's Zimbabwean dollar
Hope that helps
Cheers

Being a German I am once again very, very, veeeeeery happy that we're one of the most data privacy centered folks in the entire world. I could not live a single peaceful second with this TV in my living room.
And while I love smart home stuff the only things I buy are running on a local system with zero access to the internet. I like my privacy, thank you. And I'm hopeful that in 10-20 years we'll get there with solid EU regulations.
Greetings from Germany too, I am excited about voting in spring 2024
As frustrating as EU regulations regularly start off they tend to improve over time.
Privacy vise, eu regulations are best in the world by a lot. Problem is that many things are hard to regulate. You sign a contract about any product and noone reads it, and you cannot have 10 tickboxes.
Thank you timestamp guy
They should really give deep rock galactic another try, those devs over there are EVERYTHING a dev team should be
did somebody say rock and stone?
Wait why are they mentioning DRG? I love that game so much. Actually a lot of skill depth to it, especially if you play Haz 5 as a speedplayer
If technology has to constantly monitor you and play ads 24 hours a day to be economically viable, i will just give up and become Amish.
Agreed, I'd rather get a trailer and move somewhere remote than let corporations use me for more ads
Thanks for answering my question Dan 😁
Dan, how much extra effort would it be to add the current topic/question on screen somewhere?
I totally understand why the Labs aren't telling you about their updates more frequently. As a developer I won't tell anyone until the product is stable and near finish, caz I am always busy trying to fix shits and explaining wip shits that may not work is just additional work
I love how, after another great WAN show, watching the read comments .zip through and Linus saying "thats a problem", thats like the best cliffhanger for next week's exciting episode! 😅
2:01:26 Where Linus says "Really?!" while the merch message asks about stick locks working for nipples is hilarious
Dear LTT clip channel people: I REALLY need 1:50:29 to 1:51:21 as a clip. I have people I need to share it with and they won't watch it because "omg this is FOUR HOURS LONG." That is all, thank you!
you can use the youtube clip option
This might be my favourite wan show in a while, I laughed so much 😂. Thanks guys, I needed this
If the TV gets mass produced in enough homes, even if you value your privacy and don't buy the products that monitor you, you ever want to meet up at a friend's place, you'll need to either ask an awkward question of if they have such a device i their living room, or take a chance of getting profiled as a house visitor.
I would prefer at least one video from the lab per week😉 (small stuff, big stuff, progress updates, daily work)

10:40 hearing Linus talk about the video creation process is always a treat
As a javascript developer, please God no.

The lab is going to be such a game changer for the industry. Long life to the chief of vision of disaster of something Linus!
Process mapping and documentation is something even giant engineering firms struggle with. Mapping processes is a huge part of my job which is how I afford all that LTTstore merchandise
Well, to be fair, they struggle because its a "giant" firm. The smaller the company, the easier to implement the documentation.
But documentation is boring, so people will be less motivated to it
I think the labs is going to be so useful for people and i hope the brands jump on board and link to your videos.

Would be cool if they had a page on the LTT Store website after the stream closes with all the merch messages and the response or RUclips time-stamp they were answered (assuming the system could do so automatically based on when they archive them).

It was an un-expectant insight into just how much knowledge he has accumulated.
He just broke down the entire story arc of a potential video, accounting for problems AND possible rebuttals on the spot. Incredible.
I did watch the end at .25 speed, works fine guys! Keep the WANshow nuking friday nights!
11:38 the whole story you just described on how you trained those four… you should've basically recorded that whole thing (a recreation of how you described it). Upload that to a KB to be viewed in training and also as a reference later on. And also build up an outline on topics discussed.

In regards to the snacks versus compensation non-debate;
It's not like anyone at this company is making anything near minimum wage. It's much more likely that employees are properly compensated above similar positions in the industry already. Even if the upward salary mobility was average or below (it likely isn't) the fact that employees can enjoy their working time is a much stronger factor than being upset that you're making 200% minimum wage instead of 205%.

Title: Shooting A Roll and B Roll in a Linus Tech Tips-style RUclips Video: A Comprehensive Training Class for Support Staff
Introduction:
Welcome to the comprehensive training class on shooting A Roll and B Roll in a Linus Tech Tips-style RUclips video. In this class, we will cover the necessary camera techniques and usage that support staff, from camera operators to assistants, should be familiar with. We will explore the importance of shooting A Roll and B Roll, and why certain camera techniques are necessary to create engaging and professional-looking videos.
Section 1: Understanding A Roll and B Roll
1.1 Definition and Purpose:
A Roll: Primary footage that captures the main subject or action of the video.
B Roll: Additional footage that supplements the A Roll, providing context, visual interest, and variety.
1.2 Importance of A Roll and B Roll:
A Roll: Essential for conveying information, demonstrating products, or explaining concepts.
B Roll: Enhances storytelling, adds visual interest, supports narration, and covers transitions or cuts in the main footage.
Section 2: Camera Usage for A Roll
2.1 Camera Selection:
Choose the appropriate camera based on the desired quality, resolution, and features required for the A Roll footage.
For example, a high-quality mirrorless camera with 4K capabilities might be suitable for capturing the main subject with exceptional detail.
2.2 Camera Settings:
Optimize settings for exposure, white balance, and focus to ensure clear and well-balanced footage.
Going over the script can help identify any specific requirements for the A Roll shots. For instance, if the script mentions a detailed close-up of a motherboard, adjusting the camera's focus and aperture settings accordingly will ensure the intricate details are captured.
2.3 Framing and Composition:
Position the subject within the frame, considering the rule of thirds, leading lines, and visual balance.
Use creative framing techniques to make the shots visually appealing and engaging. For example, framing the subject within the frame of a computer monitor to showcase the tech being discussed.
2.4 Camera Movement:
Determine whether static shots or camera movement (panning, tilting, tracking) will best capture the action.
Use camera movement strategically to follow the subject, highlight important details, or create dynamic shots. For instance, smoothly tracking the host as they move through a tech showcase or utilizing a steady pan to reveal a newly unboxed gadget.
Section 3: Camera Usage for B Roll
3.1 Variety and Context:
Capture a wide range of shots to provide context and visual interest, such as establishing shots, close-ups, and cutaways.
Creatively explore different angles, perspectives, and focal lengths to keep the B Roll engaging. For example, capturing a top-down shot of a tech workspace or a close-up of a keyboard being used during a review.
3.2 Detail Shots:
Focus on capturing close-ups of relevant objects, components, or actions to highlight specific details.
These shots are crucial for demonstrating product features or showcasing intricate processes. For instance, capturing a macro shot of a CPU cooler being installed or a slow-motion shot of a fan spinning.
3.3 Seamless Transition:
Shoot overlapping shots during transitions to ensure smooth cuts between A Roll and B Roll footage.
Anticipate where the A Roll will pause or continue to ensure seamless transitions. For example, capturing a transition shot of Linus reaching for a product and then seamlessly cutting to him holding it in the next frame.
Section 4: Collaboration and Communication
4.1 Coordination with Host:
Establish clear communication with the host to anticipate their actions, cues, and lines.
Ensure the camera operator is prepared to follow the host's movements and capture essential shots. For example, knowing when the host will demonstrate a product feature and being ready to capture it from the best angle.
4.2 Offscreen Assistant:
The assistant should be ready to hand off necessary items to the host, such as props, tools, or devices.
Ensure smooth transitions by coordinating with the host's timing and actions. For example, handing the host a smartphone just as they mention it in the script, allowing for a seamless transition from discussing it to showcasing its features.
4.3 Teamwork and Adaptability:
Encourage collaboration among the support staff to ensure everyone is in sync and aware of the shot requirements.
Be prepared to adapt quickly to unforeseen changes or spontaneous actions. For example, if the host decides to demonstrate an impromptu experiment, the camera operator and assistant should be ready to capture and support the footage accordingly.
Additional Linus Tech Tips Practices:
Engage in pre-production meetings to discuss shot requirements and creative approaches.
Conclusion:
Mastering the art of shooting A Roll and B Roll is vital for creating captivating Linus Tech Tips-style RUclips videos.
