The day false 9 Messi emerged and DESTROYED Real Madrid

  • On May 2, 2009, Pep Guardiola made a tactical masterstroke that would become a defining moment in modern football. Facing Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu, Guardiola deployed Lionel Messi in the "false 9" position for the first time. Instead of playing as a traditional striker, Messi was positioned deeper, allowing him to drop into midfield and exploit the spaces between Real Madrid's defense and midfield. This unexpected move created havoc for Real Madrid, as Messi's freedom to roam and link up play rendered their defensive plans ineffective.
Messi's new role was pivotal in Barcelona's stunning 6-2 victory. He scored twice and was involved in nearly every attacking move, showcasing his extraordinary vision, dribbling, and playmaking abilities. The "false 9" tactic not only maximized Messi's talents but also allowed other players like Thierry Henry and Samuel Eto'o to find more space and opportunities. This tactical innovation not only led to a historic win but also revolutionized football strategies worldwide, cementing Messi's place as one of the game's greatest and highlighting Guardiola's genius as a manager.

One thing l feel is overlooked and that is the intelligence of the players around him. Henry, E'too, Xavi, Iniesta, Alves etc, their movements create space. Of course Messi is exceptional, but these guys skills make a heck of a difference. This team and next variant that came 2 years later go a long way to producing the Messi that is loved by most fans of the game. Club football has so much time to develop patterns of play. Without time to get things worked through he struggled at international level. Today he gets to let team mates help him and Argentina are reaping the rewards

    • @teokotirinta2960
      @teokotirinta2960 2 месяца назад +6

I think the player that gets overlooked the most in terms of success of Barcelona for all those years, and in enabling Messi is Dani Alves. The chemistry those two had on the right wing of the field is something that can't be reproduced. Yes Xavi and Iniesta are at the very top of players who ever played their positions but Alves was the one that truly unlocked that side of the field for Messi. I'd even go as far as to say Alves is the only one who can challenge Cafu for the RB position in an all-time top XI.

He struggled in every Copa America and World Cup under the burden of extreme expectation that his country expected of him. Every time he took the field he was supposed to be capable of carrying his country after the manner of Diego. But he is not the same type of person, he appears to be a much more humble individual. He never said he would carry the team, he just tried. Now he is coming to the end of his career and expectation is reduced, he has been able to spread the load and the rewards are coming his way.

Plays between the opponent's defense and midfield lines. This serves several purposes; trick the opponents' lines, create uncertainty, exploit spaces, receive the ball to make plays etc. It's a position very demanding that requires a very skillfull and diverse footballer to execute well. And Messi executed it like art.

Ronaldinho was more of a show man compared to Messi or Ronaldo. He could produce magic with a touch of a ball and his Brazilian flare was unique.

Not quite true. Totti did it before in Italy back in 2006/2007 with Luciano Spalletti. He played as falso 9 because As Roma didn't have the money to get a proper striker so Spalletti figured out this solution. Totti who always played as a midfielder or eventually 2nd striker, played for his first time as a " false 9" and he ended up winning the Golden foot that year in Europe, as the best striker.

🤮 I do hate how the media and footballers push this narrative of Pep creating this, it wasn't new. People decades before had tried it, football tactics seems to work, mostly, or more often than not in a cyclical way, when one formation comes in that counters the way people are playing, a lot of teams adapt within a couple of years, have their own twist on it until someone brings in a formation or style that counters that, the 433 was absolutely not Pep's baby, and I don't believe he even says that... everyone else seems to...

Messi wasnt the first false 9.
The first was Hidegkuti Nandor from Hungary.
Many second strikers learned from him to play between the lines.
Then in 2007 it was Luciano Spalletti who adapted the false 9 to modern football. This time, Totti was the only striker but being a natural number 10 he played put of the natural zone, removing any reference to the opponent. That, combined with Perrotta (a specialist coming from behind to dangerous positions), Taddei and Mancini from the wings, made Roma really difficult to play against. Everyone remembers that Roma side for the 7-1 thing but I suggest you watch the first leg match. Ferguson had no clue how to deal with them. Scholes was expelled early and Roma wasted a lot of goals.

@@SombreroFlicks Guardiola has managed an incredibly difficult achievement as tactician:
He has adapted many old tactics to modern football.
Midfield box from WM, false 9 (Szebes/Spalletti), inverted fullbacks (Telé Santana-Junior), attacking stoppers and positional interchange (Gasperini) and many more.
The guy is a monster. Shame that he won 2 Champions with such controversy and the other one because of Lukaku.
His genius truly deserves more than that
