Yuta, are Japanese people afraid of certain things and certain numbers that are believed to bring bad luck? Do the Japanese people know that it's actually just a trick and a game from the devil to tempt humans?
After years of watching your videos, I am finally convinced... I want to learn Japanese, the kind of Japanese that real life Japanese people today actually speak!
@@itsoracle Ok, you know damn well what he meant. Every other isekai has a damn Kirito clone, and most romcoms don’t even try to make the male designs special. You listed about 5 examples. There are more than 5 anime.
I freaking died when they said Tadano's voice was too good for the role When back then Gakuto Kajiwara was bullied because he didn't have enough experience as voice actor My boi really progressed too much, suffering from success
@@itsoracle yeah most shonen anime doesn't look the same but oh boy they have the same personality of being energetic, loud, full of bravery and etc. Which is not bad.
I'm a Japanese person, and I like komi-san. I relate to the social anxiety she feels, and I think it's explains very well, it makes me feel more accepted and normal. Even the little stupid things are scary (like ordering your coffee) that most people don't think about. The animation is really pretty and I liked how beautiful backgrounds. I liked it, it's very light hearted. Although the dad jokes are getting a bit much hhaha
Yukijiconan, if I could give you a hug I would. It's hard to have friends when we have anxiety, because most friends don't have it. No matter how you try to explain, if you don't have it you can't understand our struggle. We have anxiety and that's ok, there is nothing wrong with us. You have value as a person no matter what your struggles are.
Thanks man sometimes people not matter if they're japanese or not use to like basic taste animes like isekais full of ecchi stuff komi san it's a relatable anime I'm glad a anime like this could be as popular as generic seasonal animes
I feel like most people miss how Tadano is supposed to be average in everyway except to Komi, because to Komi he is the one who helped her make friends and took the time to understand her. Also Tadano may be the least creepy when you have people pretending to be dogs and licking her hair.
Tadano is so average that that is his unique personality trait that got him into a school that only accepts unique kids. All his test scores and physical stats are exactly the same as the national average for a boy his age.
I am Japanese. I don't understand what he is talking about. There are 31.5 million Japanese anime viewers. He is taking the opinion of a few of them and presenting it as if it were the total opinion of the Japanese people. The second season is coming because it is popular in Japan. And I am amazed at foreigners who really believe that this anime is not popular in Japan. Many people are really simple-minded. This is how prejudice is born. RUclipsrs really often exaggerate for the sake of view count. There are some foreigners who don't like Komi-san, right? In the same way, there are Japanese who do not like Komi-san. That's all.
@@Jinxser Exactly, either nitpicking, a 100% subjective "flaw" or just bullshit. I can see why certain people dont like the characters design or even the humour ( Personally I think the comedy gets quite a bit better later on. especially with the introduction of certain characters) but stuff like " I cant empathize with komi because she is beautiful" or "why has tadano such a good voice" ? No words.
If anything I'm surprised so many foreigners like this 4-koma style, like I get it's a comedy style that is it's own standard and to have so many publication has to be popular in Japan, sure it may be a hit in the cgdct genre like with k-on (damn, for how long have I been watching anime?). But for a work that many are considering serious and a good representation of social anxiety it's continued punchlines seems too jarring.
I don't personally see Tadano as creepy. I see him as someone who's empathetic and is able to connect with people who don't fit in. I think it's sweet he sees Komi for who she really is versus everyone else who has some pre-conceived notions of Komi's personality.
@@COVID--kf2mt I agree I think they tried to fit this show through a lens of reality and not just enjoy the creative anime world they were presented with. I find his kindness to be very genuine but it makes him more unique than average. It's only when they become adults that you will see men with ulterior motives, but that is not all men.
"The MC is too unique" "The voice acting is too good" "The animation is too well made" wtf are these comments? Is it a type of super advanced criticizing technique where you bad mouth the best aspects of something for being good, or is it just salt that their favorite series "got robbed" of a good adaptation by this show? I don't even watch Komi-san, nor do I plan to, but god damn, at least I can click on the link in the description bellow to learn the kind of Japanese that real life Japanese people today actually speak.
For a series that has damn near 300+ chapters, it sure isn't popular? Makes no sense to me. I just feel like people don't understand the depth of the show, social anxiety is a legit issue with the younger generation. It's a slice-of-life series.
Some of these complaints may be valid from a Japanese cultural perspective, but others seemed downright petty to me, like the ones complaining that Komi's design is too unique or beautiful, or that the animation was too good for this adaptation.
@@MisterJunichi why do you think all the trashy isekai in the last (half) decade kept being made? because they sell lol. ever since their original trashy fanfic equivalent publication (syosetsu). and guess which market they tend to look at first, domestic or overseas? lmao
You have to differentiate between otaku anime watchers and regular Japanese. For these people, Demon Slayer and Sword Art Online is the way to go. But the likes of Sanrio or Sazae-san are never anime for these guys, let alone Doraemon. Some otakus didn't even like Ghibli movies. It is like asking random people what car do they like and compare it to obsessive petrolhead. Obviously, I will tell that your Honda Accord is just an appliance: boring and drab, while in reality Honda Accord is pretty sensible and decent choice. Sometimes people can go as far as "I'm too cool for a Ferrari, hence I go for Gumpert (exotic car manufacturer from Germany)." because no normies know or cares about Gumpert.
Fun fact: Manga readers know that some of these statements aren't true such as Tadano being a creep with ulterior motives, in the manga it's shown how he genuinely cares about people and Komi-san. Also the fact that he talks way too politely is brought up by this character in the manga and she asks him to talk more casually with her and Tadano says that he just always talks politely with girls so it's hard. PS. If Komi-san wasn't beautiful it would just be a sad story, this is an anime dedicated to other people with communication disorders and at the same time it's comedy. It shows the point of view of someone new, someone beautiful with a communication disorder, this adds comedy in it as well. Most people with communication disorders aren't TOTALLY beautiful but Komi-san's beauty contributes to a new perspective of people with communication disorders and comedy which is perfect for something such as an anime.
I used to have severe social anxiety while being good-looking as well, but I would still get bullied even if classmates perceived me as handsome. They would make fun of me for every small thing such as my acne, my teeth, my voice, etc. They often did this out of jealousy and this bullying made me not talk to anyone for years until the middle of high school. Looking good doesn't mean it will be easier, kids are mean anyway
@@HoloUniversee Yes, you're right, I'm sorry if this offended you in anyway though. I meant to say that Komi-san's beauty was the main reason for everybody liking her so without everybody liking her the comedy and all wouldn't happen and it would be less comedy and more sad and serious. I hope you're doing well now, those kids sound senseless. Remember, like there're bad people in this world there are also good people, so if you can find bad people, there's no doubt you can find good people as well! ^^
I agree with you, coz Komi-san's plot doesn't only portray the struggles of komi-san herself, there are other characters there as well which have a communication disorder and I can relate to them, especially to Rei-chan, where she refuses to get along with anyone coz she thinks that even after getting along with different people, she'll eventually need to say goodbye, in the end, for her, it's much better if she didn't become friends with those people so that when it's time to part ways she won't get hurt or something like that... So yeah, I'm not being biased, but Komi-san wa komyushou desu is one of my fave slice of life anime/manga
@@Pencil2.0 I mean..that's exactly what some of the japanese people complained about. They would have prefered a more serious story and didn't enjoy the comedy that was put in which I can personally understand to an extend. I was hoping for a more serious story with a beautiful message in it but from the bits I have seen that isn't what I am going to get. I think I will still enjoy it though since I don't mind comedy. I also understand the issues about Komi not being relateable due to her beauty factor. Let's face it.. most people that have problems like Komi aren't blessed with perfect genes that make everyone adore them and be insanely accepting of how they are. Infact it's likely the opposite..people get bullied, yelled at,sometimes so much so that things get depressing really quickly and this anime had the option to shed a light on that. Instead they seemingly address the issue but cover it in comedy to keep it enjoyable to watch. And depending on the person that can feel as if the show isn't taking the issue serious..or at least not serious enough in their eyes. So all in all I understand most of the japanese problems with this. (except maybe for the "it didn't deserve such good animation" because that just seems rude to me? idk. and the comments about the character design. I guess I can see that it might not match some peoples taste but I wouldn't call it ugly by far, maximum simplistic.)
Well, yeah. Generally people with communication disorders aren't so beautiful the entire school are tripping over themselves to catch a glance. Hell, the 10/10 demographic in general is very limited - of course there won't be many people who can empathize with Komi. The manga was written for you to unapologetically self-insert into Tadano anyway. This whole thing is just fluff, wish-fulfillment and fan service. Which is totally fine, just not everyone's cup of tea, and it's susceptible to deeper criticism. Casual viewers and fans on the other hand will have a great time.
@@SaikoDeMoN I totally agree but I don't think the writer intended komi to be relatable in the that she is struggling to communicate. To me it seems like a plot device so that tadano can do his thing with his super power. Just a bit strange to say that she is not relatable when she is not supposed to be relatable. But yeah I agree its a tadano self insert and turn your brain off kinda anime.
@@kanck7909 instead of a nitpick it could very well have just been an offhand dry/self-deprecating joke. Hard to tell online without being familiar with the commenter.
How they gonna call Tadano "creepy" when there's a whole genre of harem anime where the same generic boring protagonist would catch boobs by accident 24/7? Lmao
exactly, Tadano is probably the one of the least creepy MCs to ever come out of an anime/manga series. He's just an ordinary person (hence his name) and not some over-the-top pervert. these critiques are hot trash and just wrong.
How is Tadano creepy when you literally have best selling harem mangas with a male protagonist who has literally the same stats but like 10% of his genuinity? He's not only nice to Komi, he's very attentive and considerate to everyone around him. I LIKE that the story made it really obvious he is affected by Komi's beauty like everyone else (just not as creepy) it would be way too fake otherwise, he IS an average dude and I dunno if the anime will properly tell his back story but he is pretty much an outcast before Komi became his friend also, as I see it they helped each other grow because Tadano pushed himself to talk to people he probably would never have just to help Komi make friends. But I disagree he only helped her because of her beauty, in the manga it's pretty obvious he's someone who helps everyone in need. He isn't "special" either, i like to thing the whole school is categorized into 3 main groups of people: chikans, tsunderes and people who read the air well. Throughout the manga there are various people who understand Komi fine without her needing to write, in the anime progress Onemine is one of them. Even though the story is centered around Komi's growth, I actually find myself more touched by Tadano's growth, it's not as obvious but in the manga he goes from some nobody no one sees or care about to a class leader that's relied on and needed by his peers. Like in second year during the parent teacher interviews, you can tell how much he pays attention to EVERYONE in the class and is able to identify all the good traits off all the (seemingly) odd characters. *Spoilers ahead* He is also the only manga highschool male protag whom I consider handled a love triangle well, even though he had his confused moments, he was honest to Komi about what happened and didn't let any chance of a misunderstanding happen after he admitted his true feelings. Literally as I was reading the manga I was thinking to myself he is literally onr of the most unproblematic male protags ever.
I think that's where "the mc is too different" comes to play. It baffles me bec there are male MCs in harem that are pretty bad esp when compared to tadano :))
I read the manga, and when the love triangle came up I was like "no no this is so not happening, please" but holy shit, I'm glad I put some (many) faith on it. Now I'm happy.
I really don't understand how people came up to the conclusion that Tadano is creepy when they'll eat up animes where the male protag will sexually assault someone or do something that would get them good jail time but not bat an eye. But when it comes to Tadano being a genuine great friend to everyone, he's creepy?????
In the minds of those incels (or femcels), having romantic feelings for someone is "being creepy" so by their standards, Komi must be the "creep" since she's the only one who has explicitly shown romantic interest towards Tadano so far but of course Tadano is the "creep" just because he is male.
Tadano biggest quality is his ability to read the room, and understand people. He used it to avoid confrontation and embarrassing situations but it gave him a heightened sense of empathy. Plus, he's not as dense as some, he just seems genuine.
I can't believe all this slander against my boy Tadano 😭 I started reading the manga about three or four years ago and instantly fell in love. The message was beautiful, the characters were wonderful, and the comedy consistently got laughs out of me, which is why I can't wrap my head around some of these criticisms. This show would be boring if Komi wasn't beautiful. The whole point is to show that even people we perceive as being happy or succesful can also suffer from the same or similar problems as us. Everyone assumes Komi is this flawless goddess in human form, but she's actually a huge nervous wreck. This gives the manga a unique conflict while also giving fuel for comedic moments. I *love* Tadano. A lot of people are saying he's the only average male mc they actually like, and that's because, I believe, he's the only average male mc that is *actually* average. I relate to Tadano not necessarily because of his actions, but his reactions. He reacts to certain things in a very realistic manner. Granted, they're still very overexaggerated in some areas, but I feel like that adds to the authenticity in a way. They're showing how these things feel rather than how they actually are. I feel like his character design is also perfect for the message they go for with him. His little flower-thing on his head is a little addition that sets his design apart from other average everyman tropes, but it's there, and because everything else about him is so unremarkable, it stands out. However, this still makes him average, because, much like Tadano, we all have a little flower-thing that makes us stand out in our own unique ways. No one is truly unremarkable. Plus, he's just genuinely a good guy. He always tries to be nice to everyone, and is very attentive of those around him. I'd like to be like Tadano one day. He's a good role model. Finally, the writing. I've seen other people praise this anime's portrayal of social anxiety and how realistic and relatable it is, and I 100% agree. Komi's struggles with everyday life are a little too relatable at times. The way she stresses over little things that shouldn't even matter, to the way she struggles to do simple tasks that could easily be done by anyone. But they don't just portray it in a negative light. They show that it's something that can be laughed at. It can be overcome. You may not be able to get rid of it entirely, but you can overpower it. You can turn it into something that you can laugh at. Sometimes, it may strike, and it may strike hard, and it may be difficult to face directly, but, as long as you keep facing it, it will be something that can't defeat you.
Fr fr, I genuinely wonder what exactly is wrong in their head for doing such heresy to our boy tadano. He's basically the most normal *average* mc to the point where people began to call him a chad
Man, that sucks. I cried when the first episode came out because of how they captured social anxiety insanely well. The chalk board scene broke me. Everything Komi explained she was anxious of, from not talking or participating in lunch conversations to simply just not being able to say hi to people hit me hard just because of how real and relatable it was to me. I instantly fell in love with the show just because of that one moment. I can see the art turning people off but after a bit, if anything, I've only learned to come to appreciate how beautiful it actually is. Again, this sucks to learn. At least outside of Japan, people can appreciate an amazing show like this. P.S. Tadano creepy? As someone who has and still does struggle like Komi, I WISH I had a Tadano in my life lmao EDIT: it's MY opinion as someone who has dealt with it. obviously, as a slice of life anime like this, komi WILL have unrealistic elements. but (once again) the times that they touch upon social anxiety, i believe they're able to explain it well
I love the more wholesome aspects The whole exaggeration of the Komi simps is a turn off though It’s kinda excessive at times Also if anyone is creepy it’s Yamai 😬
I'm surprised at how critical they are over a simple slice-of-life manga life this. The way the first episode showed how everyone was so obssesed with Komi established that you shouldn't take this show too seriously. The thing about Tadano's flower on his head is just nitpicking. If there is any "serious" message to be taken out of this show is that even beautiful and popular people can suffer from social anxiety, like "see? this could happend to anyone". It's not the most realistic or nuanced take on the matter, but like I said, it's not a show that's meant to be taken seriously.
If only these Japanese dudes are also critical on how they review isekai animes, then producers will step up on making quality animes instead of producing generic trashy isekais over and over.
Japan has made countless harem animes about multiple devastatingly beautiful, unique, and talented women falling for a guy who has the personality as stale bread. I think they're way past being critical about "realism"
In my opinion, most people who write comments like "Komi has an easy life because she is beautiful" have not heard about the halo effect. The first impression is the most important, and in the case of Komi it is more than positive, she is treated like a school idol because everyone perceives her as beautiful, ascribing only positive features to her. Therefore, when Tadano tried to explain to his classmates that Komi could not communicate well with others, no one believed him because their perception of Komi did not allow them to attribute any features to Komi that could be considered negative. Considering the halo effect, this causes even more problems for Komi, because at first nobody would have thought that Komi could not communicate well, they could see themselves as people who are not worthy of talking to Komi, etc.
@@matiasfpm “Komi, you mind telling me what you’re doing on that ship?” Komi: Si...Si-Si-Si-Si-Si-Si-Si-Si-Si-Si-Si-Si (She meant “Sir,finishing this fight.”)
"Komi has an easy life because she's beautiful" I'm not usually saying this, but the people who wrote this didn't understand the anime. This is also something a 14 year old kid would say.
@@martinloss4171Agreed. Yeah, sure people love her but her beauty and how people treat her because of it definitely contributes to her social anxiety. Clearly it has it's cons.
Being beautiful or handsome (like 8/10 or greater ) is a huge advantage in life. Since we're a very visual culture (both Asia and the West), your looks have a huge impact. It seems shallow and unfair, but that's how it is. There is plenty of research that shows this is true. Honestly, Komi didn't have to do anything as she was 9/10 or 10/10. Everyone else would bend over backwards to make her successful based on her looks. Unfair? Yes, but that's reality.
Compared to most male protagonists in anime I don’t understand how tadano can be viewed as creepy? Saying the side characters in this show are creepy is one thing (because they very much are. Almost to the point that it’s just flat out uncomfortable) but tadano is just a genuinely good normal guy.
Western Anime Viewing Audience : “We’re tired of all male anime protagonists looking and acting the same. Tadano somewhat tries to break the mold” Japanese Anime Viewing Audience: “Why is Tadano’s design so different? It’s distracting”
Personally have no problem with the overall art style, just find the flower thing very distracting. It looks like a separate life form that exists on his head. If I had to give an example of a weird looking MC I find visually appealing I think Saiki is my first choice.
I personally thought that Tadano's perception of himself as the "every man" was supposed to be seen as objectively false and just him telling the audience how he wanted to be seen, there are hints about his past that paint him as having done weird things and his ability to understand Komi also shows us that he's actually an uncommon person but just refuses to admit it.
@@NexusVFD it's not exactly "hidden" with how they are telling the story lmao. I understand that the show is tropey and why someone wouldn't like it, I also kind of wanted the more grounded show that episode 1 promised, but I ended up enjoying the comedy show anyway, I haven't seen these tropes done in the Komi-san style yet, so I can still enjoy the anime.
@@NexusVFD hidden my ass... it has been 330 chapters already and the end arc is coming but nothing mention about his "hidden" shit that you talk about. It just the author use a premise to introduce a character and not stick with it.
@@NexusVFD The person with a lot of child hood friends is literally named "Childhood Friend" and the girl who doesn't like losing is named "I don't want to lose" it's really only "hidden" for non-Japanese speakers. It's more tongue in cheek than hidden really.
I kinda think the Japanese are taking the naming conventions too literally, Tadano is called ordinary as a backhanded way of saying "boring," and Komi''s communication disorder is more implying that she's socially inept.
The most I hate about all this is the japanese online trolls. Thats literally splitting the hair. I mean what do you expect from the online trolls that resulted a famous female boxer to commit suicide. I know a boy in college who was also not good at talking and expressing himself but he was literally a genius when it comes to study. He might just be top 100 of that years univercity ranking.
@@AlCatSplat japan as a whole doesn’t but the people that made those comments might. Like if you have a problem with a character having too good a voice you’d definitely care if people from another country like it or not.
Some of the reviews actually have points. What shocked me the most is how they hate the character design so much. It's a unique design, for me at least, and it can be a trademark of the anime. What I can say is the design in general is unique, but I focus on the plot more. Edit: Man, this comment section's getting spicier everyday.
Yh, plot is way more important, personally I think design, music & animation just enhance a good story if it is good ^w^ Like, I was going to ignore MP100 cz of the animation, but glad I didn't, since it's really cool and the story so sweet! Guess you don't really know something till you try! :3
Tbh i don't like the design (at first glance), it's weird for these days, because it often show up on my RUclips recommendation... I decided to watch it, and it's refreshing and a really really funny anime that i laughed so hard throughout the episode, the comedy got me especially the characters naming (i like Japanese pun) and Shouko ofc Pardon for my bad English
Some groups I was in started to have this sentiment and I dipped cos clearly they think a person should be fixed within a year and Komi is still having trouble communicating with people in her 2nd year of HS. It's like you dont get over a life long condition that quickly just because your enviroment is no longer the same.
Tbh I personally thought Tadano was quite the refreshing character. Despite how normal he looks, he doesn’t act as ordinary as he leads on. He’s considerate, he’s understanding, and he shows compassion to those around him, even if they don’t think highly of him. And thats a trait I really enjoy! Fleshing out the seemingly blank slate of a character into somebody we never expected, just makes me really happy. And I might just be a sucker for character growth, but there’s a lot of character growth in this. It’s pretty obvious. And I like it. A lot. Even though it’s not as popular in Japan, it still holds a place In my heart. And I don’t watch much anime.
The fans call him chadano cause he is an absolute chad at being kind to others especially Komi if you know what I’m saying (I’m talking to YOU manga readers!)
I can tell these people dont know what serious anxiety issues actually is. Its almost painful sometimes, so this show definitely resonates with me. Im 18 and only recently have i actually found friends who accept and help me for who i am, and i cannot even begin to convey how grateful i am. I can say so far, this show 100% paralels my own experiences, at least on the side of social anxiety.
@@roxazzino3115 ok it comes down to few points unreal and flat characters - none of them feel like real people and can't be related to comedy more than anything - ignoring the obviously stupid jokes like the constant worshipping, feels like the author had people with social anxiety close to them and thought up comedic situations a person with social anxiety might struggle in. appeals to more general population in that way rather than showing any of the struggles that matter the most to socially anxious people komi's struggle is treated as another joke half the time - ex. the shaking when she tries to speak, i shouldn't have to say why portraying someone paralyzed in anxiety as a joke is a bad idea when you reach this large of an audience the above make it hard to take seriously at all when it attempts to portray any actual struggle from social anxiety, and it is possible to do them well, see: kaguya-sama love is war another thing is komi can't speak, but can communicate fine by writing. this isn't how social anxiety works, that's selective mutism. people with social anxiety become fearful and anxious in any kind of social setting, not just when they have to speak. watamote minus all the stuff with delusions is a better portrayal of social anxiety imo. it's pathetic and cringy because that what having social anxiety feels like overall it's not that bad tho i give komi a 7 or 8/10
it doesnt matter, she's right, she's not a relatable character because she still manages to be a mary sue because of her looks. And i'm saying this as someone with social anxiety who's been both ugly and pretty, my quality of life has become much better after i changed myself to be conventionally attractive. @@Nettari67hh9 have you ever watched watamote? the main character certainly has social anxiety and it's far from the conventionally attractive even for anime standard I'm sorry if I'm being rude by any chance I just wanted to make a recommendation as someone with social anxiety
In the manga it is stated early and redundantly, that Tadano is as average a person as he can be - you can see this for instance, when they get the scores of their exams and he got exactly the class average points in every category. Furthermore, it is established that his best skill is "reading the air" very sensibly, which is what both helps him to become "invisible" in social groups (he is the nail which never protrudes) AND understand Komi without her saying a word. This skill is, what lets him be average AND win the big price at the same time. For me, that works quite well - in the manga even better than in the Anime.
And his name denotes this too. His name is '' Tadano Hitohito '' and in japanease "tada no hito" means something like "a normal / random person" kkkk All Komi-san's characters have the main part of yours personalities expressed in theirs names like Komi, a girl with Komiyousho (communications problems)
@@christianl2024 this is only his First name but since in japanease is normal call the person for his family's name is ok call Tadano Hitohito. And what I say is only look the surname and the first kanji of his Name (tadanohito)
People who said Komi is beautiful so she's already winning at life They're literally just like the background characters, already perceiving something before knowing someone
In other words, the haters are just the background mobs, only seeing superficial things from the surface. They'll never be like the main characters like Tadano who looks beyond to try and understand people on a deeper level. It's like the difference between manga readers and anime only watchers seeing a series once it gets adapted...and goes even further with manga-readers vs light novel readers, if there was a light novel original source.
Yup, got a friend who has a great body and is beautiful as well. However, she suffers from depression due to her father abusive tendencies. Despite being beautiful, she can be quiet at times, and that’s why she doesn’t have a huge group of friends. Yeah… Looks aren’t everything.
This is absolutely correct. Shallow people tend to think that if you're attractive on the outside things are naturally easy. That's just never the case. It may open doors but a person with social anxiety, depression, general anxiety, or any of the number of other emotional issues wouldn't even realize that everybody thought they were gorgeous. Even if they do realize it they don't know how to use that information out of fear, often, of revealing that they're not what everybody thinks they are. Komi-san is an artistic demonstration of "never judge a book by its cover."
The kind of websites that he took the comment from is always too critical so you can’t really say not popular in “Japan” Also Komi-san communicate is the second best selling manga in Weekly Shonen Sunday so it’s fairly popular👍
I don't think they understand that this anime is supposed to be cathartic for someone with social anxiety. They capture her anxiety well but instead of going with the depressing reality of the fact that hardly anyone will help you, they go the wholesome route. It's so someone can imagine a happier outcome to their own problems instead of getting bogged down with the sad truth of the world. It gives hope to people with this issue
Exactly, imagine a happier route. In fact, isn't this one of the biggest appeals of any Slice of Life Anime? But I'm kinda new to anime, so do you think this is true?
Is that how people see it? Interesting. I have social anxiety and am a fan of Komi, but it never occurred to me it could be therapeutic. Her anxiety is so downplayed I consumed it as simply any other romcom. I need that more depressingly real aspect to actually connect with it on that level, so Watamote hit that mark much more effectively for me. It's interesting to see other people's experiences though.
Now I can understand why her name is Komi Shou(ko), thank you and to Yuta. I also realized that Komi is a shortcut for Communication (コミュニケーション), Idk how did I missed tbh.
I don't care what japanese people or anyone say, i just want to thank the author for making this great anime/manga series!!! Srsly want season three so much !!!
I think you're skewing this a bit much in a negative direction. With the anime being on Netflix and being more available to a wider audience of course there will be more people that may not like it. The manga is pretty popular so the show having a good production seems like a really weird thing to nitpick on. To me it seems like some of these comments are also just plain haters or trolls.
I saw a comment pointing out that some of them are jealous that a series like Komi got a good adaptation over whatever series they like that didn’t get that or not even getting one. Which I can see. Unfortunately pettiness is as strong in Japan as it is in America.
Precisely. I don’t know if the series is the most popular in Japan but it must have a successful following to be adopted by a reputable production studio. I’ve watched the anime and I’m now reading the manga and I really recommend both. I haven’t laughed so much in a long time.
As a person that has social anxiety, i do relate to komi-san's behavior and found myself rooting for her as she tries her best to try to communicate herself. i do want to be better at communicating but i always overthink and end up not able to speak well (in a jumble and didnt notice it) or just not able to speak at all. The one thing i can't relate to her about is the fact that she's pretty. But think about it, if shes ugly or average looking, she will have so much problem living her live normally barely speaking as much and would in fact be bullied as someone mute and this whole anime would go the dark road. Definitely not something u wanna see as i have had enough of people always portraying those topic of this subject as something realistic and dark, i would love to see something light and funny in relation to this topic like this anime portrayed.
Actually, nice point on "what if Komi is average looking or ugly". Guess this case the social anxiety would stop being the central topic, dissolving in other problems of a "school outcast to be bullied" (most likely making the viewers think this anxiety is a complementary and derivative issue) and the story would become even more cliche.
@@windbardbardodosventos1527 The thing with japan especially around schooldays would be that bullying is REAL COMMON. If the person is pretty, her pretty privilege would only get her constantly harnessed. Being teased for being odd like asking her her out and since she didnt answer it autos into she agreed and force her. Or ask in a mocking way "hey are you mute? Want to go out with me? if you don't answer, i will take that as a yes" etc etc. PEOPLE CAN BE RUTHLESS. BUT! of course since this is a lighthearted anime, thankfully, this most likely won't happen much and we can just cheer komi-san on ( ^^)9
Plus, the series shows how tough Komi is to show up everyday and tough out these experiences. Anxiety is no laughing matter...it can be crippling. Little victories here and there add up nicely.
Maybe they think that being able to read the room is too much of a power which collides with the notation that Tadano is supposed to be just an average ordinary person. iirc he even said during the class introduction that he's only good at reading the room, so viewers should know at least.
@@HolyDoomfish In other episode Tadano said that he forced himself into being just an average ordinary person because of his trauma after the girl he liked reject him. So it's not like he is just that, he is just trying to not suffer again.
@「STAND NAME」Kero Kero Bonito「STAND USER」Flamingo being normal doesnt mean being boring though. normal people can have great intuition and people skills because they appeal to a bigger mass. so people sahing he cant understand her and be normal at the same time are just wrong
Those incels want to insert themselves into Tadano's role. That's why they don't like Tadano because he is actually sociable and actually put in effort.
Tadano is exceptionally normal and that makes him someone who can see everyone as normal. That's why hes the first one to see Komi for who she is and why he's the one constantly saying "take another look at the calm, confident beauty you pedestalize" to all the side characters. I guess too many Japanese believe "their" average is "average" so they're blinded to the layers. Or expectations are too high. The thing that makes Tadano viable to be at their school is how exceptionally average he is, making him extremely unique compared to all the ridiculous side characters. He's both average and not average. He's essentially a Schrodinger's Cat because the school is the box
They seem to be overthinking it. There are hundreds of manga protagonists like tadano, so the self deprecating male protagonist in not surpriaing to me. Also, the flower thing? Really? Is just something that is there. Like unaturally shapped hair that is so common in anime. Or unatural hair accesories. And anime and manga are full of crazy character designs. Do these people react the same to naruto uzumaki? One forgets the flower thing is there after a few chapters.
It sat at place 10 in a list he showed. Considering how average it is, for ex. because of the run of the mill protag like you mentioned, thats impressive and not at all overthinking
It was odd how one person was thinking that Tadano had an ulterior motive. Tadano, a fictional character, someone who we can hear all of his thoughts because he's the main character. If the show doesn't show an ulterior motive, there just straight up isn't one. And this anime isn't tagged with thriller mystery either, meaning there is no twist revealing Tadano's true evil thoughts. I understand how Tadano is heard pretty differently from a fluent Japanese perspective. Even me who is studying Japanese found his polite speech kind of weird, but since I'm not fluent I could just ignore it. But if the show isn't telling you there is an ulterior motive, there is literally none. This leads me to believe that person was just adding whatever they could to review the show, rather than only including relevant opinions and properly reviewing. I also found it weird how someone's review was about how they were disappointed it was a comedy anime (but I don't think its as weird as the review mentioned before). This is weird because they only got disappointed at episode 2. Episode 1 had comedy moments in it as well, which leads me to believe this person is referring to the fact that episode 2 didn't have a heart to heart scene like the chalkboard scene. But this is a slice of life comedy romance. Its like this person has never seen or heard of the function of a first episode (particularly in slice of life). The first episode is supposed to invest you into the whole series for these kind of slice of life anime. Different from a more plot driven anime where each episode can be just as impactful as the audience learns more about the world of that series. I think it was odd how the person commented on the comedy aspect like that despite being someone with the mindset to review the anime. Did they also not check the tags on the anime? because they wouldn't have been disappointed if they had looked at things other than the title and thumbnail. There was one person who said they can't relate to Komi because she was beautiful and winning at life. I can't agree with this because being beautiful isn't winning at life when you have no friends. Like are attractive people just supposed to be happy because they are attractive? And plus its fiction. The part about Komi being a beauty is there is slightly (very slightly) important to the story, to market better, and use it for the very unique social interactions. The importance is that as Komi is so beautiful, nobody would suspect she would have zero friends, and so nobody made the effort to be friends with her. This may show the diversity of people who find it hard to make friends, that no matter how they look people may struggle to make friends. Nobody expects her to be bad at talking. The story could exist without this aspect, but then it would be harder to market if the main heroine was not particularly attractive, so you just got the accept the fact as it is so in my opinion its not the best point to make on a review. Especially that part about "winning at life". When you word it like that it will give the impression that you value beauty higher among other things. I'm not saying the person who reviewed it IS like this, that it is just the impression given when anyone says something like this. However, I can understand that Komi being implied to be very attractive will make it harder for people to insert themselves and empathize, as usually if one was so attractive, they wouldn't be so anxious about themselves as they would have likely been complimented and would have much more confidence in communicating. However this doesn't mean that all attractive people are good at socializing and expressing their selves. So to me, this isn't a reason to not be able to relate to her, because Komi's problem is not that she's ugly, but that she has trouble talking. You can relate to this even without being in the exact physical condition that Komi is in. Or else males that have trouble talking can't relate to Komi because they aren't girls and they don't know what it's like to socialize as a girl? See, Komi's appearance shouldn't be a hurdle when trying to relate to her, which is why I disagree with that particular sentence in that particular review. Just wanted to share the reviews that I personally thought had some odd point. The only one I genuinely just disagree with is the previously said one which talks about Komi's beauty. Disclaimer: I couldn't really read most of these emails as my kanji is extremely limited, so my thoughts on these reviews are 90% based off the English translation provided by Yuta, so if my thoughts seem wrong and based off incorrect information/misunderstanding in the nuances of the languages then that's my bad.
Yeah, I think many people incorrectly treat or expecting this anime as ROMcom instead of romCOM. Those two genre are so similar yet have completely different main objective.
If beauty is winning, then I should have 2-3 GFs by now! Come on people! Does the richest CEOs have the most free time or a country guy who is just doing odd jobs?
Even sillier is the parts of the 1st episode before the chalkboard scene make it perfectly clear the kind of comedy they're going for, even for people watching totally blind. There's no excuse for not realising it's going to be a comedy.
場面緘黙症(ばめんかんもくしょう) “selective mutism” is a good way to put it. There are a lot of people here in Japan who are labeled as “shy”, “introverted”, or コミュ障/症 when they’re more like 場面緘黙症. It’s an especially difficult phenomenon in the classrooms here. Refusing to speak during class and sometimes not even taking notes. It’s actually why many tv personalities (芸能人) can be on tv with the most juvenile humor: it’s so rare compared to the average dry person here. Imagine a class full of quiet moody teens and one goofy classmate. That goofy classmate would be the class clown by default and many might find him funny by comparison, even if it’s just juvenile humor a 1st grader could come up with.
Those criticisms are quite exaggerated, you don't have to totally identify with a character to like them, they are complaining about clichés that have existed in the genre almost forever. I think they resent Komi's beauty because they think it doesn't matter how many problems you have if you're attractive you should be happy and Komi doesn't seem to care about that. To me they seem to be too far fetched complaints, I mean complaining about tadano's hair?
But the beauty thing makes sense. A lot of people with social/mental problems do not have good looks and get ignored by society. Their stuggle is like the MC of Watamote. Komi has a big tool to combat her problems - beauty. She's attractive enough to bring people to help her, but if she wasn't she would be treated very differently. And I think that makes sense, it's an anime which doesn't really represent the problems that real world people with this issue suffer.
@@PintoConrad That's what i wrote before is an anime not a documentary, It does not have to be an accurate reflection of the real world and its social problems.
@@PintoConrad people in the real world are pretty and still have disorders and stuff tho. Saying that just excludes the fact that they exist... The most beautiful people I've ever seen, they struggle with day to day life the same way someone like the girl from watamote or tadano would...the assumption that prettiness = happiness is unfair to those people. And creates stereotypes. There are also "unattractive" people who's personalities alone makes them popular and they date alot, I know alot of them. Tadano and komis relationship is actually realistic to me bc I've seen it happen irl a couple times. There's pretty priviledge in there but the expectations creates a whole other issue in its place in my opinion. And when they can't even see their own beauty bc of past hurt, it's a jumbled mess
Westerners like Komi because we really value stories that build up characters that have physical, mental, or social flaws that harm their day to day life- as opposed to the situational issues that many Japanese writers focus on. I look at situational anime like Naruto where it is the village and the people around him that are the problem in ostracizing him. In Komi however, its Komi who has the flaw that she must overcome by changing herself. Westerners like seeing people grow together and I think Komi resonates with that feeling, we're not just rooting for Komi to break out of her shell, but also rooting for her new friends to be there for her and grow along with Komi by learning what it means to have the social issues that Komi struggles with. I think this mindset really shows why Westerners like series like Komi, A Silent Voice, Violet Evergarden, or even dramas like Zato Ichi.
@@latia876 Situational conflict is much much easier to write because it allows people to become emotionally invested in a character almost immediately with almost no prior knowledge to that character. This is why every character shares their tragic backstory, or have tragic origins prior to meeting the MC. Its just a really powerful writing tool compared to the more challenging character focused approach. This is why it took until more or less the end of the Cell arc for people to warm up to Vegeta in DBZ.
@@NicOz42 honestly I think it’s really just code for the fact that their character designs are more original and not used to it. It kinda tilted me when someone claimed it saying that it coulda been “moe”, since I think this show would be x10 worse if it was generic moe style. The dichotomy of the goofy feel when Komi is being awkward, compared to the beautiful serene hits of Komi in other moments, it’s just something different. I think it’s a joke to say that they don’t fit. Idk just my opinion
as an artist, the art is incredibly gorgeous and you can see the time taken for it. its also unique and stands out from other mass produced annual series
I was vaguely aware of the manga (it was advertised in the back of some other titles I was reading) but I didn’t think much of it. I saw that it had become an anime that could be seen on Netflix, but didn’t think much of it. But after seeing a couple interesting posts on Reddit, I watched the first episode, then bought and read 15 volumes of the manga (and preordered the next five). There are so many funny (and a few cringey) characters, Komi’s expressions are great, and I can sympathize with her social anxiety.
I’m half Japanese, and reading those comments makes me angry. It’s kinda unrealistic that their perspective is entirely like that. This anime is amazing, and no one will stop me from love it 💕
I feel like some people that gave it a bad review are projecting their anger towards the anime. Like how Komi-san is beautiful and has anxiety. Maybe they see it as not being fair. But they are missing the point. As someone that suffers with anxiety daily I love this anime. It is bringing a mental issue to light and getting more people to talk about it. It is also showing that ANY one can have and struggle with anxiety, not just the outcasts like me.
“Brings a mental issue to light” lmao like barely, i enjoyed the manga and anime but it was not made to show how anyone can have anxiety or stuff like that, it was made for fan service, also it’s a bad representation of people with anxiety lol
It doesn’t bring it to light at all, and if you’re happy that this show is treating social anxiety the way it is then you’re just lying about having it. The way it portrays it is horrendously bad, it just treats it like a joke instead of an actual issue, And no it doesn’t show that anyone can struggle because Komi doesn’t struggle, she’s made to be perfect in basically every way, people will treat her like a god and they can somehow understand her without her even doing anything completely destroying any chance of it actually covering the real issue of social anxiety
"Yeah she can't communicate well but just being beautiful she's winning at life." You can be blessed with good looks but suffer internally at the same time. I'm an attractive person, but I suffered from anxiety and depression in HS. This made me feel like I was never good enough for anyone. But girls mistook this as me being conceited and full of myself. I relate to Komi because her classmates mischaracterize her on a superficial level. They only judge her by her looks and passive demeanor. Only the people who try to communicate with her on a non-superficial level really understand how she feels. This goes especially for Tadano. The rest of the class treats him kinda like dirt because of how average he is, but he's extremely considerate towards people, especially Komi. The classic, "Don't judge a book by its cover."
this comment is so valid. yes, being beautiful can have it's advantages in life, but people also have their opinion at-ready. and even if someone is very beautiful, if they've been put down a lot, it's very hard to still believe it.
@@lukeaustin4465i mean it sure makes it easier but that doesn't mean that everything they are going through is invalid or unimportant. Everyone has there problems beatifull or not
The title actually surprised me. Considering how good the manga is, I thought Komi would be a little bit popular in Japan. The anime however has exceeded that and is fantastic for now.
the manga is actually abhorrent what are you talking about lol the whole thing is "haha she's shy lol" and the side characters are infinitely better than any of the main characters
@@orbglorb-zingalorg I think she's supposed to be relatable? I'm a riajuu myself (not bragging or anything) so I can't get into it. I like the romance aspect though.
I remember reading it a year ago and dropping it after 10 chapters, it starts really good but then the side character are so dumb, that's the main thing I disliked about it
"The character design of the main character is too unique and it's hard for me to accept" Just like it's hard to accept different people for Japan's society too :)
This reminds me of something a friend from Japan told me about how One Piece took a long time to take off compared to other shonen manga. The story benefitted from Shueisha having more patience back then than they do now where if a manga isn't successful by I think Chapter 13 or 19 (?) it's considered for cancellation.
It's because so many manga author are competing now than ever. So to avoid cluster fuck, shueisha decide to "15-19 chapters only". But by doing that, they do able to pick up some amazing good manga like Spy x Family, Act-Age (I'm so sad), and Dr. stone. You really have to be The Best of the rest to get pick up by Jump.
"One Piece took a long time to take off" Huh? What you and your friend are talking about? OP was a huge hit since the start, and this isn't a opinon, is a fact lol
The whole ''To understand this show you need to understand japanese'' just seems like you promoting your channel/classes To really understand it you need to understand what social anxiety is The anime is to upen up and view the life of how it is with social anxiety, having a hard time speaking around people, ordering food, expresing how you feel and so on. The reviews were calling Tadano creepy for what, understanding a person with social anxiety? ''The background is so well made compared to the character shading!'' Imagine if the background was just as plain, and they can't put too much details in the characters since that would be too much to animate I am someone who's both introverted and have social anxiety I normaly don't want to talk to people but when i do i always struggle to join or create a conversation There was one time in school when 2 girls asked me where i got my hoodie, i just froze and forgot how to speak (i basicly turned into wattpad y/n) to the point my friend had to tell them where i got it and drag me away, when we had left the area i was just shaking and felt like breaking down in tears And that is why i so much relate to Komi, i have ben in the same spot you see her in in the anime
Yeah the promotions makes the message pretty insincere. On top of that I agree that the understanding of social anxiety would go beyond language barriers. I love the show as well!
Yeah idk why they are acting like he CAN have ulterior motives, it's not like he's a real human being... if the creator of the manga says he is being nice because he is nice then that's just how the character is. Doesn't matter what other people think about it lol, it's not so deep as if he only is Komi's friend because of other things
3:02 this was exactly my thought on the show. They did a good job portraying social anxiety. In fact, I find Komi Can’t Communicate to have one of the most accurate depictions of social anxiety in anime, after Watamote of course. And I’m not saying only ugly people have social anxiety, because that is FAR from true. It’s just that it’s harder to relate to Komi because she’s so beautiful, and everyone literally simps for her. Everyone thinks she’s cute. Everyone wants to be her friend. It just… makes me a little envious. Most people with social anxiety go through so much hurt and loneliness. They aren’t as lucky as Komi. And because of that, it was hard to enjoy the show. With Watamote, the main protagonist is an absolute mess that’s constantly getting isolated by her peers and makes herself look like a fool 24/7. It’s hard to watch Watamote because of the absolute CRINGE… Which is exactly the point the creators were trying to make. That’s the true pain of social anxiety, not some romanticized version like Komi’s life.
I think that komi is view like a untouched idol and people don't try to talk to her for fear of rejection and she becomes lonely , and she gets the spotlight all the time and is makes her very nervous and she freezes
The part where I truly see her as human is when she went (spoilers) with a date with Tadano Kun. The thing is that you truly realize that she's quite boring ( I don't mean this as an insult whatsoever it makes her seem even more human tbh). The story centers around everything that surrounds her and little itsy moments in her life. But as a stand alone she's just truly a normal anxious girl. You could really see although it's already a big growth here, she could speak a few sentences without her notebook. She isn't really great to communicate with. She's shy and awkward and it's quite hard for her to find a conversation starter. And at some point she also realized how boring she is. Ig what my point is that she's actually quite realistic in my opinion. She has weaknesses and she's not as perfect as I thought she is. That chapter is truly eye opening honestly. So although she is quite unrealistic with her whole unparalleled beauty, athletic abilities and her intelligence. She's just a normal girl in certain aspects. There are certain parts of her that makes her relatable.
I think it’s a little unfair to call Komi a ‘romanticized’. You don’t need to be unconventional looking or socially scorned in order to experience debilitating social anxiety. Despite the fact that Komi is regarded as pretty and perfect by her peers her anxiety keeps her from achieving her goals and being happy. There’s nothing romantic about that.
@@tansywhisker2547 I guess what's different is that she has pretty privilege. Most of the reasons why people are attracted or somehow stick to her like flies is because she's drop dead gorgeous. Of course it doesn't mean that it's solely the reason. But you can't deny if she looks average she wouldn't gotten some of the opportunities in the first place. Like for example Tadano wanted to be friends with her because she couldn't believe that the school's madona was alone all this time. But yeah I also have to say that the reason why she's so anxious also is the amount of attention that she's gotten every day.
I personally LOVED Tadano's character a lot because he was absolutely the most sweetest boy in the entire comic. he expected normal things, he behaved normally well, he was normally decent. his empathy and understanding of others was the most exceptional thing. he was just a normal boy who was nice to people because he believes being nice = normal. i think in the manga, the best scene for him was the parent teacher meet where he talked about every single one of his classmates so well - that really showed how his empathy is the normal for him
Honestly the only design I have an issue with is Najimi, whose hair looks like a bug helmet and feels distractingly out of place compared to how hair is drawn for most of the other characters. Tadano's is at least passable bc it's not unusual for the guy main character to have some ambiguously spiked hair shape (and the flower thing is random but idk, not as bothersome to me)
@@toxicsugarart2103 idk if you've read the manga but one of the characters named naruse has bright pink hair I believe. And another character named netsuno has dark red
It's funny that most rom com anime has the exact carbon copy characters like alot, especially with the male lead. This is the only time in my life where i saw an actual romcom anime with a nice protag, that has actual "reason" for the girls to like them.
This has been one of the only anime for a LONG time that has managed to make me laugh out loud. Also I love that Tadano can’t even catch a break in real life hahaha
You probably have watched it already, but for laughing out loud, I cannot recommend Asobi Asobase enough. Honestly, regarding any series, be it real film or animated, I've never laughed that hard. Only some comedy movies can compare imo. And of course stand up comedians, but that's completely different.
@@Kick0a0cat DAMN BOI. I SECOND THAT. The scene with the game when she has to slap her friend's ass... The scene with the baby.. I was dead laughing for literally minutes in front of my screen...
the creators of animation and manga made it with great sweat and effort, their work deserves to be appreciated. I as a FOREIGNER really like what they make. thanks to the Japanese animators and those who have tried and made my life more colorful
I love most of the reviews contradict each other and if one person loved something then the next person couldn't get into the shows because of that same reason. This shows that if you want an honest review of the show then you should always watch it for yourself
Here my 2 cents, I recently started watching it and komi is a character I see myself a lot when I was little around middle school and early high school. I like the fact that she not only a bishoujo but she got her flaws when it comes to talk but everything else she does effortlessly. Tadano is actually the 1st average male character I like why because he trying to help komi make friends and from what I seen, he trying to understand her and show respect to her. That alone earn my respect. We need more anime like this
Lol I can't take seriously people who don't give a series a chance because they don't like the art style. ( In my opinion I think the art style is very cute).
I see that the origin country of manga has completely different standards. I'm honestly surprised with some things, especially about the art style. In my opinion, what makes a certain anime remarkable and memorable aside from the story is the uniqueness of the art. I'd usually forget about an anime that looks ordinary or has like a simple anime art (not sure how to explain it but what I mean is it's quite bland), and appreciate more unique styles like TBHK. Komi can't communicate is such a good anime though, so I hope more people will watch it ♡♡
yes, i liked the manga very much! although the anime didnt really satisfied me. i kinda think tadanos head looks so weird in the anime. i think the manga is not THAT unpopular in japan, ive heard my friends talking about it, and they liked it. i think its pretty popular.
I am definitely not Japanese. I just lived in Okinawa for a year and I've been watching anime for about 28 years, now. That said, leaving aside Komi's over-exaggerated beauty and responses, I honestly find a lot of little character traits in several of the cast that I can empathize with. Probably Komi, most of all. I have dealt with social anxiety and ADHD my entire life. I don't end up all silent, but that trembly feeling definitely hits me pretty frequently when trying to talk with people. Even people I actively like! It seems like a very hopeful story, though. Sometimes these sorts of things are hard to deal with, but I've done decently well for myself and I believe that Komi will, as well. For now, I will just continue to enjoy this sweet and adorable story.
Just remember that Komi-san is still airing. The positive reviews usually comes after the anime ends, so this is kind of a "survivor bias" where we only see the negative coments because the positive ones are delayed. Also you're more likely to express your opinion of something you hate instead of something you think it's just ok. Also, the reviews I found were mostly positive, and it seems like it's a love it or hate it, there was just a 20% of negative reviews but they were pretty hateful like in the video.
Like dude the only people on Internet forums are r3tarded at some lvl. Even though the marketing of this is awful, we still need to wait for the general rating after the Anime ends because that's usually the time for the final rating generally. And I have confidence about it.
It's fascinating that half of the complaints is that they did too good of a job with the animation/voice works/etc. It's like "Oh, I'm sorry, we'll go back and remake it with worse quality, so it reaches the level of your estimation of the story."
@@Shannovian maybe they were trying to point out that there's should be a much "worthy" anime that deserved that kind of treatment which didn't get or even had any chance? And Komi in their opinion has a quality of a short anime not a full sakuga? Dunno? In my opinion I like the art style, reminds me of Detective Conan artstyle.
I really like the show. Komi's communication style. It reminds me how I talk to friends in Japanese. My writing is understandable, but when I speak I always get it wrong. This makes my prefered way to talking to people in Japanese through writing. It makes me feel really close to the character and I admire that she tries really hard despite having such difficulties. I think people misunderstand the character "getting everything beacuase she's beautiful". She gets through social situations because she's beautiful, but more so that by being quiet she lets other people project their thoughts onto her. That's how she copes with social situations. However, if you pay attention, the character actually just works really hard all of the time-- partially because that's the only form of stimulation she seems to have in her life. If you looked at her report card, she had a written 99% in English. That's really impressive if you never talk. I might be biased. I might be projecting myself onto her (see what I did there?). However, I think that such a person, were she real, would be absolutely fascinating to have a conversation with.
i cried watching this anime, plenty of times it hits different once you understand the situation. i have issues with talking, so i think maybe you would either have to relate or just understand. this anime is good.
I was in tears knowing that Komi had an anime adaptation after reading it for two years plus and Studio OLM knocked it out of the park. The sound work is on par with the visuals, with both of them being an absolute delight to experience. It's very much faithful to the manga and I'm very happy that most characters being fleshed out and having proper seiyuus work with them. The story and the pacing is excellent and again, Studio OLM perfected it to a T. Watch Komi-san, I am no longer asking.
That's a huge head start, and if she fixes some of her problems its great. You can work on your character and abilities, but cannot change your looks (well to some extent, but natural good looks are different than plastic surgeries) So while It is little far fetched, it's not so far from the truth either
"The character designs are dated." In other words the characters don't just look like a bunch of circles. Imagine WANTING the standard 2020s anime artstyle.
The character design is the only thing that I don't like about this anime. If you compare it to even a decade old anime like let's say Hyouka, I feel it's a huge stepdown.
One thing I get into arguments with a friend that is big komi fan is whenever I say that Komi is way too good of a person, to the point that it's unrealistic. So I always say that it's more of a turn-my-brain-off manga/anime that I find kinda cute and funny.
i agree, netflix really doesn't do the subtitles well 😅 i read all of the manga in two days and absolutely loved it. while watching with my sisters who haven't read the manga, however, i've had to explain why some of the jokes are funny or what the joke means due to netflix's poor translation. i like the anime, but i definitely prefer the manga.
I'm lucky to have already read the manga, so I understand most of the jokes, but I still have to pause it every now and again to explain them to my roommate who watches it with me 😅
Frankly, I do think reviews can be somewhat misleading A few times, I've chosen to avoid shows or games because of reviews Because they were flawed products! But when I tried them myself, I really enjoyed them While this show might not be for everyone, I do think it's okay for niche products to exist Is it objectively perfect? Probably not, nothing is. But would you enjoy it? Go by your own standards, not the standards of others! It's okay to like something, that another person dislikes! If every show/game followed the exact same perfect formula, everything would become homogeneous
As a certified speech therapist, I was really annoyed with the first epidose becaude I knew it was selective mutism and not a comunication problem, But I still love this anime. How some japanese people didn't realize at the beggining that it was a comdey? Only comedy TV shows can have names such as "tadano hitohito" and "osana najimi". I do think that he is acting the way a normal person would act towards her, but the rest of the class are just total weirdos (in a good comical way)
i can see why people why people would get annoyed about this distinction. but at the same time it just rolls of the tongue better with communicate instead of mute
I have Selective Mutism, and I was always bothered by the title of communication disorder as well, but dismissed it has a cultural difference with Japan. I really enjoy the anime though!
Komi san is one of the anime that i want to watch in the future if i have time so far the issue i have is how the characters around her treats her like god than a normal student. Other than that so far the anime concept is interesting.
The whole premise of the school is that everyone is exceptional. Tadano Hitohito is exceptionally average, but apparently, he is also exceptionally empathetic.
I'm not therapist or nothing but I am autistic and to me I always view komi as potentially autistic. I've been reading this manga since day one and I found a lot of the things she does are very similar to me and what some other autistic people do. First of all she isn't good at speaking and stuff which is something I struggled with till the end of high-school. Whenever shes happy she moves in almost involventary ways such as flapping her arms accompanied with the flap sound effect very similar to what I do when I stim. She also str7ggles with helping other people through there emotions and doesent knoe what to do. Its kinda head Canony but I always relate to her more because there's that sense she could be like me.
As someone who suffered from social anxiety in high school (not as severe as Komi), I couldn’t finish it. I was shunned in school assumedly because I wasn’t pretty in their eyes. I just know that if I didn’t have braces, acne, wiry hair, etc, I would’ve been given the time of day more just like Komi. It’s based off of looks and I believe Komi was made to be too beautiful looking. It reminds me of the fact tthat people are ok with mental health struggles as long as the person is conventionally pretty.
i suggest watamote (if you havent read it) the initial half of the manga got it quite harsh on the main character (a true social outcast in her school), but she eventually grew out of it
You like this anime hunh? Well sucks to be a gaikoku-jin who can't fully grasp the context of the anime because of lost meaning in translation. Don't worry,i wiru herp you understand japanese.
@@skwr. Bro,i talking from Yuta's POV expanding on your comment in a more comical way. I wasn't being condescending and asking whether you like Komi san or not.Its a good anime
I find it funny how he says the subtitles don’t exactly translate well, but like, having watched the dub, sub, the Spanish and German dubs(languages I both speak), having read the magna, and asking the couple Japanese friends I have about it, if it isn’t something that is a direct cultural barrier (the eye exam is funnily enough the most egregious change I’ve yet found across all the versions), It’s pretty consistent across all of them. While the dubs do have a large number of changes for those reasons, my friends assured me the subtitles were pretty on point, with mostly puns being what’s lost in translation, which is typically across any language barrier. (Fun fact, “you are what you eat” is actually a german pun)
The first comment was very interesting. The character design is “too unique?” That’s usually something that’s praised but maybe that’s a western thing.
I actually always preferred the original Oneshot of Komi more than the main manga. In the original oneshot it was about a girl who was too shy to communicate and a boy who was very good at reading people. I think the first episode with the blackboard scene kind of gets closest to the original oneshot (pretty certain it actually was in the oneshot too) as it focused a lot more on a girl who had been misunderstood by everyone and being given a chance to form a friendship instead of just people admiring her. I found the main series focused a bit too much on how "Everyone in the school is over the top zany personalities" and it kind of got in the way of the original sweet and simple storyline. That being said it is still a good manga and I've been glad to see so many manga that I've been following on Twitter, Pixiv, and the like getting anime adaptions this year. (可愛いだけじゃない式守さん is getting an anime adaption next year and I'm super hoping it goes well because I've been waiting for that one for years now since I've been wanting to recommend it to friends but they never translated it!)
It's a perfectly reasonable take. 99% of people who suffer from this condition IRL are probably not "the most beautiful girl in the entire school", so how are they supposed to relate? Attractive people play life on easy mode.
@@wristcontr0l They say im an attractive person when it comes to looks But i don't think im playing on easy mode lol Since my country judges based on person's morality and attitude And im the kind of weird person
"Komi is not popular" Shows a popularity list, Komi is number 10. Kimetsu no Yaiba is 13. There is a lot of absolute garbage above both too, but that makes sense as actual Japanese otaku seem to have awful taste in general. The thing about Tadano being kind of creepy is interesting, I noticed the same thing. Especially the keigo... None of it has ever bothered me reading the manga, and he has never felt off-putting. In the anime he is clearly faking being normal after his chuuni-period, while in the manga it has never been so in-your-face. And yes, I read it in Japanese, before anyone assumes anything.
It's kind of amazing, when you think about it. That the most normal character could be thought of as "the most unique" by a certain demographic. Just goes to show how different things can seem with another perspective.
I am kind of annoyed on how the backlash this anime gets in Japan. I get the art style is unique but to be honest it reminds me a lot of lucky stars, as this is the kind of show you can watch when you are bored. I may be quite biased as I can read and understand Japanese well enough to understand what they are writing. I don’t understand how they said the anime was quite sloppy after the first episode since the comedic and the more ‘relaxed’ Komi as she warms up to people that can be her friend. I can also relate to some of her character traits for example I get really anxious when I am on call with someone or when texting so seeing how she reacted really shows how she is a genuinely good character who wants friends. The main character Tadano is getting way to much hate for one flower/leaf thing on his head, I mean if you just think of it as a ahed/cowlick it is quite ok. I am pretty sure it was made so you could recognise him because without it he would be a bland character with really no trademark. To be honest I feel like the reason people don’t like it is because they haven’t given it a real chance, that they can’t understand that the anime was supposed to look like how does and they can’t except that having pretty backgrounds and nice visuals should be allowed for any show that doesn’t have the distinct really pretty and aesthetic anime art style.
I agree a lot, I dont understand Japanese too well but I can see that the anime was shot down after the 2nd episode because it wasnt what they expected.
I don't even understand what they want when it comes to the art style. It seems to mirror the manga just fine, it's pretty and people complains.... About it being pretty? Do they prefer a lazier animation?? I'm so confused. I'm convinced those are trolls really that hasn't seen much of slice of life comedy 😂
@@akabaneaki It indeed sounded like their problem was the simple character design in general, maybe especially those scenes where they're drawn even more simplified than regularly. And those who critized it were somewhat angry that such a "simple style" manga gets such a beautiful adaption whereas manga with a more detailed artstyle get lower budget adaptions. I don't understand it either though. Should they have given the manga an ugly or sloppy adaption just because it is drawn in a "simple style" without too many details? lol I'm personally quite happy with the adaption so far because it elevated the source material for me. I do have some problems with some characters and clichés but overall I still love the series.
Bro, your comment should be pin on top, also in my country (Malaysia) this anime is well received among my friends. Sometimes, we just enjoy watching this kind of relax, a bit of comedy anime after doing some work.
Most of these reviews seem pretty stupid to me. Weird/unique character designs are common for manga/anime. Why complain about it now? It sounds like they just love to hate and look for something to be salty about.

Yukijiconan, if I could give you a hug I would. It's hard to have friends when we have anxiety, because most friends don't have it. No matter how you try to explain, if you don't have it you can't understand our struggle. We have anxiety and that's ok, there is nothing wrong with us. Also Tadano may be the least creepy when you have people pretending to be dogs and licking her hair.

That's all.

Idk why the trolls just called Tadano creepy when there's actually Yamai, who's extremely creepy towards Komi
@@creamcreak because she's a girl and according to them people can act like that to same-sex and its not creepy at all smh
I can't believe all this slander against my boy Tadano 😭
I started reading the manga about three or four years ago and instantly fell in love.

As someone who has and still does struggle like Komi, I WISH I had a Tadano in my life lmao

''social anxiety'' OMG bla bla bla ... man.. shut your ass up.
Exactly
Yeah man, the reason i like this anime because its a light rom com, a light dont take it seriosly like that guys. Its a light not heavy
@Bobbybob Well, that's fine. They can always go and watch something else lol
Halo Effect?

Almost to the point that it’s just flat out uncomfortable) but tadano is just a genuinely good normal guy.

unreal and flat characters - none of them feel like real people and can't be related to
comedy more than anything - ignoring the obviously stupid jokes like the constant worshipping, feels like the author had people with social anxiety close to them and thought up comedic situations a person with social anxiety might struggle in. appeals to more general population in that way rather than showing any of the struggles that matter the most to socially anxious people
komi's struggle is treated as another joke half the time - ex. the shaking when she tries to speak, i shouldn't have to say why portraying someone paralyzed in anxiety as a joke is a bad idea when you reach this large of an audience
the above make it hard to take seriously at all when it attempts to portray any actual struggle from social anxiety, and it is possible to do them well, see: kaguya-sama love is war
another thing is komi can't speak, but can communicate fine by writing. this isn't how social anxiety works, that's selective mutism. people with social anxiety become fearful and anxious in any kind of social setting, not just when they have to speak.
watamote minus all the stuff with delusions is a better portrayal of social anxiety imo. it's pathetic and cringy because that what having social anxiety feels like

I think its a very frustrating trait
And his name denotes this too. His name is '' Tadano Hitohito '' and in japanease "tada no hito" means something like "a normal / random person" kkkk

The anime is lighthearted. Because if it would be more realistic them she would be bullied anyway because she is pretty
@@windbardbardodosventos1527 The thing with japan especially around schooldays would be that bullying is REAL COMMON. If the person is pretty, her pretty privilege would only get her constantly harnessed. @@幽霊船-o4h You realize that and annoyingly loud child are literally the two most common MC archetypes right?
You chose to speak facts right here.
True. I love japan, but from what I've seen most Japanese people are horrible at reviewing works of fiction.
場面緘黙症(ばめんかんもくしょう)
“selective mutism” is a good way to put it.
"I HATE NARUTO BECAUSE OF HIS WHISKERS ON CHEEKS"
like seriously, that's just stupid reason.
@@idek5 yeo people are dumb

EXACTLY! You hit the nail on the head. I love those ones too.
You got it right!
Ahhh I've never noticed that before but you're right! Why do they seem to prefer situational conflict though? 0.0
This actually makes a lot of sense

This anime is amazing, and no one will stop me from love it 💕
I agree with you 👍
I agree most of the problems they have mentioned are coming from their own twisted perspectives.

@@itsomegali5342 elaborate, please
It doesn’t bring it to light at all, and if you’re happy that this show is treating social anxiety the way it is then you’re just lying about having it.
The way it portrays it is horrendously bad, it just treats it like a joke instead of an actual issue, And no it doesn’t show that anyone can struggle because Komi doesn’t struggle, she’s made to be perfect in basically every way, people will treat her like a god and they can somehow understand her without her even doing anything completely destroying any chance of it actually covering the real issue of social anxiety
"Yeah she can't communicate well but just being beautiful she's winning at life."
You can be blessed with good looks but suffer internally at the same time.

The whole ''To understand this show you need to understand japanese'' just seems like you promoting your channel/classes
To really understand it you need to understand what social anxiety is
The anime is to upen up and view the life of how it is with social anxiety, having a hard time speaking around people, ordering food, expresing how you feel and so on.
The reviews were calling Tadano creepy for what, understanding a person with social anxiety?
''The background is so well made compared to the character shading!''
Imagine if the background was just as plain, and they can't put too much details in the characters since that would be too much to animate
I am someone who's both introverted and have social anxiety
I normaly don't want to talk to people but when i do i always struggle to join or create a conversation
There was one time in school when 2 girls asked me where i got my hoodie, i just froze and forgot how to speak (i basicly turned into wattpad y/n) to the point my friend had to tell them where i got it and drag me away, when we had left the area i was just shaking and felt like breaking down in tears
And that is why i so much relate to Komi, i have ben in the same spot you see her in in the anime
Yeah the promotions makes the message pretty insincere. On top of that I agree that the understanding of social anxiety would go beyond language barriers. I love the show as well!
i think it’s really unique, i personally really like how Komi-San reacts with her signature panic big eyes pose
His acting nice to komi-san doesn't mean he does have an ulterior motives.... he was just raised by his mother to be a gentleman...
The part where I truly see her as human is when she went (spoilers)
with a date with Tadano Kun.
Haha I remember watching Watamote and I cringed so hard.
Tadano's is at least passable bc it's not unusual for the guy main character to have some ambiguously spiked hair shape (and the flower thing is random but idk, not as bothersome to me)
Huge same. Also it feels weird to me that his hair is such a specific shade of purpley pink when mostly everyone else’s hair is a natural color.

Here my 2 cents, I recently started watching it and komi is a character I see myself a lot when I was little around middle school and early high school. I like the fact that she not only a bishoujo but she got her flaws when it comes to talk but everything else she does effortlessly. I see that the origin country of manga has completely different standards. I'm honestly surprised with some things, especially about the art style. In my opinion, what makes a certain anime remarkable and memorable aside from the story is the uniqueness of the art.

Just remember that Komi-san is still airing.
What?? Why!? Some of these reviews go from hilarious to too personal but oh well! I love it.
Everybody has their own opinions
The story and the pacing is excellent and again, Studio OLM perfected it to a T.

A few times, I've chosen to avoid shows or games because of reviews
Because they were flawed products!
But when I tried them myself, I really enjoyed them
While this show might not be for everyone, I do think it's okay for niche products to exist
Is it objectively perfect? Probably not, nothing is.
But would you enjoy it? Go by your own standards, not the standards of others!
It's okay to like something, that another person dislikes!
If every show/game followed the exact same perfect formula, everything would become homogeneous
As a certified speech therapist, I was really annoyed with the first epidose becaude I knew it was selective mutism and not a comunication problem,

i can see why people why people would get annoyed about this distinction. but at the same time it just rolls of the tongue better with communicate instead of mute

While the dubs do have a large number of changes for those reasons, my friends assured me the subtitles were pretty on point, with mostly puns being what’s lost in translation, which is typically across any language barrier.

Rule Number 1 for Japanese teens: If she can't say *ONICHAN* then the anime is bad.
Yuta's plug to his japanese course is undefeated.
its obnoxious as hell ngl
These are literally the dumbest reasons for "not liking an anime" I've ever heard
Author: I will make this character the most normal person in this story
Japanese audience: This character is very unique
Should they have given the manga an ugly or sloppy adaption just because it is drawn in a "simple style" without too many details? lol
I'm personally quite happy with the adaption so far because it elevated the source material for me. I do have some problems with some characters and clichés but overall I still love the series.
Bro, your comment should be pin on top, also in my country (Malaysia) this anime is well received among my friends. Sometimes, we just enjoy watching this kind of relax, a bit of comedy anime after doing some work.
I AGREE !!
Most of these reviews seem pretty stupid to me. Weird/unique character designs are common for manga/anime. Why complain about it now? It sounds like they just love to hate and look for something to be salty about.
Because, of them we would never get season 2 of the anime
they're just mad that they'll never be as big of a chad as Tadano
