I agree. I have felt myself drawn to become a Christian more strongly since I started listening to this stuff. I think partly because to me music is the highest form of worship, and I love that this music is actually a part of the service, not just music as a kind of sideshow to the real thing.

Closed captions throughout the chant would be helpful to pray the chant...

Okay I am curious now, I have listened to several of these and I keep hearing hints of familiar melodies and phrases that I know from old American Protestant hymnody (the Sacred Harp to specific). I wonder what the relationship is, who is copying who here. Sounds great though.
This one specifically reminds me of 399 Happy Christian.

      Curiosity was my first step.

This has been a translation from the Byzantine Greek Good Friday Service - here in Greek:

It seems to me the Old American Ptrotestant hymnody copied it from the older Byzantine :) hope this clarifies things :)

@@joannajones8533 thank you. I just want sure if this was an old chant or just old words set to a new melody. I am curious how the tune travelled, because it is very similar. I have heard other tunes from that era in medieval music. I just wonder where an American Protestant song writer in the early 1800s came across this music.

This chant is from 12th century, meaning it is older than Protestantism and US together, and I listened to 399 Happy Christian, and I don't see much resemblance, it just reminds me of 'Foggy dew' melodicaly, and things that priest says in this chant are from Psalm 119, so that is maybe why you see familiar phrases.

There is no such thing as "good Friday" in the Orthodox Christian Church. Where are you from? We do have a great holy Friday which expresses our theology as opposed to your Protestant theology

I think there are better ways to phrase that...

Sit down. Complaining because the description uses"Good Friday" instead of " Great and holy Friday" is childish. The meaning is exactly the same.
The lamentation doesn't change because they called it differently.

Maybe titling this “Good Friday” will lead some of our heterodox friends to this video, and ultimately to the Truth and Beauty of Holy Orthodoxy.
