- This is the first of a four part discussion of John Gwynne's The Faithful and the Fallen. In this video, four BookTubers chat about book one of the series, Malice. The discussion begins spoiler free and includes spoilers for Malice (but not the rest of the series) later. We will continue with book two in a month!

This is the best type of book tube video, like joining a book club. No one in my life reads fantasy so this is the only way I can enjoy the book all over again! Thank you all!
That's the beauty of our community here on BookTube, Heidi. Thanks so much for watching!
Enjoyed this. Glad that more folks are giving John's book a try (and loving them).
You’ve done an excellent job of spreading the word! I can thank you for The Faithful and the Fallen as well as Dark Tower.
I had so much fun discussing Malice with you guys!! Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on the rest of the series!
Still laughing at how we now know that Allen hates beards and crows
Likewise, Abby!
I'm seriously thinking we should just get a fake beard and wear it on the next one just to creep him out.
@@PetrikLeo I don’t need a fake beard, but I love the idea!
And don’t forget hobbits!
@@PetrikLeo AMAZING!!! I shall invest in the most Vikingesque beard I can find
Poor Allen, haunted by bearded viking hobbits.
Ah this was so much fun! Thanks for this discussion. Looking forward to Valor discussion next month!!
Same here!
Petrik, i can confirm that Bernard Cornwell's Saxon series, that your going to read has more shield walls than you've had hot dinners! They're fabulous!! 👍👍
@@ZamWeazle I am starting the 2nd book very soon!
I don't remember if it's going all the way to shield walls but the Balgriad by Eddings does use the phalanx idea
@@shmuelshtessman4906 I definitely need to read the Belgariad!
Abby and Pertrik are trying so hard to not give any queues about spoilers. I’m loving it.
I had a good laugh over that too!
What a brilliant conversation to listen to, loved it! It's so funny seeing Petrik and Abby struggling to withhold spoilers! Can't wait to hear your thoughts on Valour, it's so nice to listen to people gush about Malice, which was such a big part of my childhood. Truth and courage, all.
My veins almost popped from holding myself back. What a challenge. 😂
Ha ha! I got a chuckle out of watching Petrik and Abby suppressing all the spoilers too. The Valour discussion is going to be a blast! Truth and courage!
It was so challenging!! I’m not sure if I was smiling or grimacing whilst trying to hold the spoilers in
@@PetrikLeo You did a good job! I don't think I'd have done so well😅
This was so much fun! Loved chatting with you guys!
It’s always a pleasure to be in a conversation with you, Allen! I’m excited for round two!
I love your channel
I love your passion n honesty
You are raising the bar every single day
I wonder how you manage the expectations when your channy reaches more than a quarter million subs
Thanks so much, my friend! I’ve really enjoyed exchanging comments with viewers and subscribers, who, like you, have been so kind. It’s getting harder to reply to everyone as the channel grows a bit, but I’ll keep doing my best!
I just finished Malice so I was finally able to watch the spoiler section. Good stuff. I loved Malice and if the rest of the books are as good, this will be one of my favorite fantasy series. After recently finishing The First Law trilogy and being somewhat mixed on it, mostly due to pretty much not liking or rooting for any of the characters, Malice was a treat. Lots of likable and interesting characters. Can’t wait to continue this series.
I’m very glad you enjoyed the read! It’s fun to root for Gwynne’s character.
It is nearly 2am and I have sought this out to help with my withdrawal/ processing of Malice!
Loved it. Just listening to start and then going to sleep. Highly anticipating thus tomorrow as perhaps a form of therapy.
I’m happy you enjoyed the discussion so far, and sweet dreams!
love the fact that petrik is wearing a Heart pirates jolly roger t-shirt
Ha ha! We talked about it before we started recording!
Hahaha! Glad you noticed that, Ali!
@@PetrikLeo have you read pluto?if not dude you should read it
@@aliturk6692 already did. Monsters and 20th Century Boys, too!
@@PetrikLeo what about Holyland and a trail of blood, they are so so good
... Allen just said Celtic and Viking are the same thing. 😱😱😱 ALLEN.
LOL. Loving this discussion, y'all are some of my favorite booktubers and I'm excited to watch through this series with you guys as I read it!
Allen has done his penance for this egregious error. 😁
@@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy LOL. I can only imagine.
Bearded men fighting. Hahaha! I had the same impression, but I can't imagine Abby being so sold on a series based on just bearded men fighting. Petrik's endorsement is also a strong one. So fascinating hearing about Philip's background in Welsh and Allen's knowledge on Roman strategy. I will get to this sometime this year. Sadly, I won't be able to read the books in time to watch the follow-up videos anytime soon, but I love the four of you having these discussions! Enjoy!
Malice was a fun read, and fans of the series keep telling me it gets better with each book. It was also loads of fun chatting with those three!
@@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy book 4 is soo good isn’t it?Somehow I think Valor may still be above Ruin for me. My friend just read night angel and Lightbringer, so he is reading Faithul
And the Fallen now, and I am reading lightbringer, just finished book 2 loving it, and we plan to do a Sanderson deep dive afterward. I bought my mother Shadow of the Gods for her birthday since she LOVED a song Of ice and fire and GOT, and the show Vikings… and she says she can’t read it since she can’t see the type and I’m Torn on asking her for it back so I can read it or just buying a kindle version haha.
@@Spock800 Ruin and Wrath were my favorites in The Faithful and the Fallen, with Ruin edging out Wath, but they’re all part of one great story. The Shadow of the Gods is my favorite so far, but it definitely has a more somber tone. Very Nordic. Have fun with all those books you’re reading!
I absolutely love these long form discussion videos with multiple people talking about books. Thanks for the great content!
Thanks so much! This is my favorite thing to do on BookTube. So much more emerges from a conversation than one person can convey in a review, and the discussion feels more alive to me.
Only a year late to this series, but better late than never! I don’t know why hearing Phillip say “douche bag” cracked me up. Great discussion!
Ha ha! “Douchebag” is definitely an Allen word, so I’ll blame him for being a bad influence. 😁 I’m happy you enjoyed the chat, James!
I love this chat! Have subscribed to your channel now, and fully ready to delve back into The Banished Lands! btw - RUIN is the best book ever!!! so many feels! And Alcyon, just wait for Alcyon..
I’m so glad you enjoyed our conversation! I’ve found that getting together with others to discuss books is much more fun than analyzing them on my own, not to mention all the insights I gain. I’m excited to finish the series!
Always happy to hear a group of fun people discuss a book they love 😄
I can't share in the enthusiasm yet, as none of the main characters felt like anything special to me.. but I will push up my read of Valour so I can watch the next discussion with as much knowledge as Allen and you, Philip.
Happy reading! 🤘
It's fantastic to have you join us, Rob!
I look forward to listening to this! I just finished the Faithful and the Fallen and I loved it!
Awesome! I’m looking forward to the rest of the series.
I just finished Malice last night. What a book! I loved it. His characters are amazing! Great video and channel. Keep up the good work!
Thank you, and I’m happy to hear you enjoyed Malice. Best wishes for the rest of your time in The Banished Lands!
I loved this - can’t wait to watch the rest in the months to come. I am in complete agreement with Petrik with ranking this series with Hobb and Erikson’s.
I’m so glad you enjoyed the conversation! As you well know, those three are are a lot of fun to talk books with.
That was such a great discussion! I had a ton of fun watching it and admiring that heart pirate shirt @Petrik Leo had on lol. Also the fact that Allen hate Hobbits, beards, and crows had me dying of laughter for a solid minute 😂. Im super glad you guys enjoyed book 1, and as I commented on a previous video, it only gets better from here. I will be eagerly anticipating the next discussion for Valor and until then, happy reading, my friend!
Thanks so much! I'm glad you enjoyed the discussion -- it's a lot more fun to talk about books with friends. I appreciate you watching and leaving your awesome and supportive comments!
Awesome convo.Enjoyed it alot guys :D
I’m so glad you enjoyed it!
That scene with Corban and Storm reminds me of the old movie Air Bud.
I’m sure Storm would have excelled at basketball!
Absolutely Welsh inspired! I was always confused when people were saying it was viking inspired, or were disappointed there wasn't enough "vikings"
As a huge fan of The Mabinogion and of the Welsh language, I was delighted to read Malice. I’m definitely a sucker for the Celtic stuff!
I just started reading Malice (and I'm liking it well enough so far), so I only watched the first 15 or so minutes. I'll be sure to finish the video when I've completed the book. You guys talking about how great the book is will only raising my expectations though. On an unrelated note, I enjoyed your discussion of the First Law series (a favorite of mine). Keep up the good work!
Thanks so much! First Law is a definite favorite for me. I hope you’ll enjoy the rest of Malice!
@@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy I'd probably be enjoying it more if my dog didn't partially destroy the copy I have. In all seriousness, I'm liking it so far. It be foolish of me to judge a 650 page book after only reading 140 pages or so.
@@abrahamakucewich8645 It’s a good thing dogs are cute!
I also didn't personally find the first part of the book slow like some people have said. I felt fairly engaged pretty much from the beginning! 🤷♂️👍😉
It took me a couple hundred pages to feel completely immersed, but I got there. It’s often the hard thing about introducing a bunch of characters and a whole new world.
I'm glad I finished Malice a few weeks ago so I could watch the discussion in full.
I'm now going to read along and finish valour before the next one and stop there so I can listen and theorise along with Philip and Allen.
I hope this continues on for the sequel trilogy too!
Awesome! Yes, We’ll be reading all four books, on per month. Allen will host book 2, Abby book 3, and Petrik book 4. It should be a lot of fun!
Yes, just yessssss!l 🤩 love all you guys channels so much!! 😍 I'm actually halfway through Malice at the moment and I'm already enjoying it more than most fantasy that I've read in a while. John Gwynne is now an absolute new favourite and I can't wait to read the rest of the series!
I of course won't listen to the spoiler part of the video just yet but will return soon once I've finished! 😉👍
Also big congrats to Petrik for getting John Gwynnes amazing new cover reveal. It looks phenomenal!! 😲👏
That cover is breathtaking! Enjoy the rest of the read - it goes fast!
Great chat loved it. I’d say that Drassil is very obviously Norse as well as what you guys mentioned.
So glad you enjoyed the chat! I suspect there are more Norse references than we are catching.
Glad you enjoyed it! And yup, Drassil is from Yggdrassil, but I don't think there's as many Norse stuff here as some people think, though. At least from my perspective, the most noticable ones are Jotunheim and as you said, Drassil. 😃
Currently reading valor in February and read malice in January so glad I found this to help keep me motivated I'm in with you guys!!
Awesome! We are happy to be helpful!
Finally got a chance to watch this as I finished reading the first book, and it was really fun to hear this conversation. Thank you!
I’m glad you enjoyed the discussion! It was a lot of fun to read the series and chat about each book with these guys, and it was amazing to discuss Wrath with John Gwynne on Petrik’s channel!
@@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy I immediately added it to my watch later haha Gwynne seems like such an awesome guy. Looking forward to that.
@@trill_nathan He’s an extremely nice person!
Codex Alera by Jim Butcher, features late stage Roman Legion tactics, including the Marcian reforms of cohorts.
To me, the author I feel John Gwynne echoes most strongly is David Gemmell. Thannon reminds me of Druss, without being a clone of him. But the same emphasis on virtue not being automatic, but overcoming the darkness inside you. Very Drenai series.
Fun discussion and I enjoyed being able to snoop now that I'm reading the series myself.
It's awesome to have you snooping, Shawn! I'll be finally reading some Gemmell late this year with A.P. Canavan, and I'm looking forward to it. I suspect you're spot on regarding his influence on Gwynne.
I watched the spoiler-free part and this was such a fun discussion! Now I need to go catch up with you all on this so I can watch all of these as I'm reading!
Those three were great to talk to. I hope you’ll enjoy the series!
Thanks for the great video. You have a really great group together 👌I look forward to the rest of the videos from the books👍 TRUTH AND COURAGE!
Thanks so much! It should be a lot of fun since those three are a joy to talk to.
Thanks for the discussion, I just finished the first book yesterday
Our pleasure! I hope you enjoyed Malice!
Did I like this book? Hell, no. Am I still watching this video just for the aweseome energy? Hell, yes.
Ha ha! Well, thanks for watching- much appreciated!
@@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy Thanks for subscribing, also very much appreciated!
My pleasure!
This was so great! I'm reading Valor right now. I definitely agree with your guys' thoughts on the characters. Gwynne does such a good job with fully realizing them and making them very complicated. I really enjoyed the action sequences and the pacing of Malice. The prose really worked for me too. It never felt bogged down, but I had a full understanding of what was going on. I did not expect how much I would like Corban's character; I felt like Allen. Nathair, he's in an interesting role that I like watching, but I dislike him so much lol.
I’m glad to hear you’re enjoying the series! We had a blast talking about Valour on Allen’s channel too, and soon it’s on to Ruin!
People just need to read this series. It is amazing, I loved it from the very first and John has filled the gap that was left in my reading when David Gemmell passed.
I'm glad to have discovered The Faithful and the Fallen too. I'm nearly finished with Ruin right now!
@@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy man you are going to want to dive into Wrath straight away when you finish Ruin. Enjoy, it's amazing.
Great Discussion, looking forward to this series of videos 👍👏
Thank you!
Ooooh I'm so excited for this! I will have to kick off my reread now to keep up with you guys, even though I just read these for the first time in August! This is my favorite series! I'm excited to have discovered your channel!
Awesome! It will be great to have you reading along - I enjoy learning from fans of the series.
not sure why people say the beginning of the book was slow?? I am lucky to not be* permanently paralyzed due to this books breakneck speed throughout the entire narrative. Entire military campaigns are waged in all of 2-3 chapters. Fun read.
I’m glad to hear you enjoyed it, and I agree it’s a fun read!
This should be great! I just finished this series in December and I've been considering getting into the next one too.
Cool! It seems like a fun series so far, and I hear it gets even better!
This was awesome! I loved it. I just posted my review of malice today and loved it!!
How cool! Glad you enjoyed the discussion!
I think the only challenge is there's a ton of character names. Even you guys were struggling with the names. I almost gave up in the middle, but the end is definitely exciting. The 2nd book has a character list in the beginning, but it spoils some things in the first book. So what's better, long detailed descriptions like in Song of Ice & Fire or very little descriptions like in a John Scalzi book?
It’s a common problem in fantasy, I think. Epic scope often means lots of characters with lots of names. This can lead to confusion when adjusting to a new world. There are different ways of trying to alleviate it, like the character lists you mention, but I often still find myself taking time to adjust. One of the perils of epic fantasy!
I love the format of these videos! Really great to hear from all of these unique perspectives from some great creators. Can't wait to start the series! I might need to sooner rather than later to keep up with these videos.... This may become the series I read in between Malazan books.
I look forward to reading Malice and returning to this video 👌
Using this as a faster paced read between Malazan books is a great idea -- that's pretty much what I'm doing, and so far it's working out well! There is nothing like Malazan, but sometimes it's good to just get absorbed in a fun read too.
All great RUclipsrs!!!!
Thanks so much!
I ain't one of those simps, but Abby's beauty is out of this world

The list is growing!
The jehar remind me of the guys in black from the Mummy with brendan fraser
I can see that!
I just finished Malice. Wow the final 3rd was just awesome.
In my opinion, Ruin and Wrath take the series to another level, but you’ll see that emphasis on action throughout. Happy reading, Martin!
@@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy just finished Valour. It was quite the ride. I’m about to watch your group review which I’ve really enjoyed. On to Ruin now

Awesome! I’m looking forward to getting there!
I am interested in this series, so thanks. Maybe I can fit it in this year :D.
If you can fit it in, I hope you’ll enjoy it!
Hi Philip. I really enjoyed this video. I wanted lead with something positive because I have a complaint about the amount of ads I had to suffer through in order to enjoy this great content. Is this something you control? If so, I would love to see it dialled back a bit. It really detracted from the experience for me.
Sorry for being negative! Your stuff is great though. And I can't believe you learned Welsh - very impressive.
Thanks! Unfortunately, the only control I have is to turn ads on or off. RUclips decides how many to put. I’m not sure how it happens, but I think it has something to do with popularity and length of the video. I’ve asked more experienced BookTubers if there’s a way I can fine tune the number of ads, and so far they’ve told me I can’t do much. The funny thing is I wasn’t going to monetize the channel at all, but RUclips announced a policy change whereby they could start putting ads on videos even if the channel wasn’t monetized. I figured I might as well get a few of the pennies. It doesn’t quite pay for the books I review, but it helps. Anyway, thanks for letting me know. I might just turn off ads on the longer videos so people can listen to the conversations without having to skip ads.
@@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy Hey thanks for the response! Carry on Philip - far be it from me to deny someone the chance to earn a few pennies, especially since you can't really control the ad frequency! If RUclips premium was priced just a little better I wouldn't even hesitate...
@@royston1928 Thanks! Yes, I’m not quite willing to spring for RUclips Premium either.
Currently on Ruin and so far the series gets better and better.

I like how much you guys seem to like the first book, when I'd say that's easily the weakest in the series. Not in a bad way, it more just seemed to struggle to gain its footing in the early stages.
Yes, it took me about 200 pages to feel really invested, but I got there. Fans tell me the series gets even better, so I’m excited!
Did that one guy really just say he doesn't like Hobbits? Everyone is entitled to their opinion but what the hell kind of take is that 😂😂😂

One Piece reigns supreme
No.
I don't think Nathair was ever a good guy. Maybe it was because it was so tropey and so obvious, but his arc and how stupid and childish everyone around him were was frustrating for me to read.
He was essentially always a selfish person looking to be the “savior”.
