How to fix a Type Cover not working on a Surface Pro 3 or Surface Pro 4

- A couple of years ago I wrote about how to fix keyboard problems with the original Surface RT and it remains a popular post on the site. I have come across another problem with the Surface Pro keyboard that causes it to not work at all looking like a major hardware issue but there is a surprisingly easy fix.
When you come to your Surface Pro 3 and the keyboard and trackpad do not work at all here is a quick fix.
1.Shutdown the Surface
2.Hold down the Volume UP and Power Button at the same time for 10 seconds
3.Power on the Surface (if it goes into the BIOS screen tap on Exit setup)
4.The Surface will boot up and hopefully the keyboard will now work.

Thank you for the very helpful video! For all those who try this out, let me stress how important it is that you hold the "up/ volume" and "on" keys in unison for TEN seconds. Twice I failed to hold them down for that long, which resulted in my keyboard initially not working. :)
Wow worked for me, I lost the keyboard after an update and tried rolling back with system restore as well as trying to reload drivers and clean the contacts, everything failed until I followed your simple tip and bang, back working again.

After not being able to do anything had to go to the shop, where my Surface was wiped and nothing worked. This video is a literal saviour - thanks a lot man!
I have just spent an hour on a chat with Microsoft, they could not help unless I called a premium number as my warranty had just run out. I should have watch this first, I'm up and running again, thank you!
AWESOME !! I was trying to contact Microsoft to start a RMA... chatting from USA Surface support and they re-send me Portugal chat and then to Spanish chat where finally I discovered I was talking with "Skype support" and not "Surface support"... I tried everything, updating Windows and following every step on Microsoft "how to" web... what a loose of time !!
And the solution was SO SIMPLE !! and IT'S NOT DOCUMENTED ON MICROSOFT SURFACE WEB.

Thanks so much. I was a bit nervous saying YES to the reset, but keyboard all working as per normal. No idea what caused it.; It worked one day, not the next. The Microsoft support site doesn't help at all. Thanks for sharing!!

Hi, this worked for me once but now I tried to use my surface again and the keyboard doesn't work. I tried this method again and now it doesn't fix it. Anyone have any suggestions?

I used Surface Pro 3
Once it could not read its Type Cover 3 (and other touch cover), so I claimed it to Microsoft. They gave me a new one.
And today (with my new Surface Pro 3), I found the same problem, and I launch the Bios like this video. At the first time it didn't work, so I try it again (but the Bios won't be launched, it boots to Windows). Yes!!, the cover is worked perfectly fine.

I've had a dead type cover for about a year and bought a new one which didnt work. Finally found this and it works again!!!! This trick still works! Thanks a bunch!

Tried this several times but it didn't work. Microsoft had suggested reinstalling the keyboard driver but it was not listed in my Device Manager so I checked for updates even tho it just updated yesterday. Apparently that was the problem. The new updates installed, I did the start/volume button procedure and got my keyboard back. Thank you!

It worked!! I tried factory reset and everything but this was the solution! (Only worked on second attempt but got it working either way so i dm) This information needs to be on some of the many help chats I went through with Microsoft.
I tried the troubleshooting process on the Microsoft website and nothing. This worked on my Surface 4 today, thanks!!

This completely worked. I was very mad, thinking my keyboard was broken. Follow his instructions and your keyboard will work.
Thanks, this fix still works in April 2018 on a Pro 4. Why it should be needed is another matter altogether. I like my Surface, but there are some firmware 'fragilities' i have encountered, first with the Stylus pen and now with the keyboard which just should not be there, or should be quickly picked up by MS and fixed in the next update. Do they ever even read the user forums? Thanks Ian for the help.
Just watned to say thanks!!! this fixed two issues for me... one the keyboard and the other was the screen rotation was always locked. you are the man.
I know this is a massively old video but I just had this problem with an older Surface I am wiping and setting up just as a spare device to have around and this worked perfectly so thank you!

it worked, I was finding an old surface of mine and the keyboard backlight was on but the keyboard and trackpad didnt work but this fixed it
after trying everything else including full reset and format, nothing worked, but this simple move did work and my type cover is working.
I’ve had mine for 3 years and never had the issue until just now. Fixed it right up! Thank you!

Had also an type cover that did not work anymore.
I tied almost every work-around without having success.
Last try yesterday was draining the battery completely (if the white battery symbol appears continue with pushing the Power Button so often till nothing occures anymore).
I left the type cover seperated for one night from the surface.
On the next day I connected both and waited 15min. After booting the type cover worked again AND a firmware update for the type cover was surpriselingy downloaded!!!!
At the Moment it works properly (also after shutdown).

This works. How come we weren't told of this fix by the dealer. Do Microsoft know about this or pay any attention to what is going on out here?
