I think Persson could have won the 1989 WTTC Single too. He was beating Waldner from other tournaments until the WTTC final. I think he lost 2-3. Persson is not underrated, he is just not as famous as Walder. A real nice guy. He doesn't have that star's ego. Very polite and easy to talk to. I thought he would have won at least one more WTTC Single.
Persson is one of my all-time favorites. Since both Persson and Waldner are teammates and know each other services so well, Waldner lost his serving advantage. Their battle boils down to footwork and strokes.
Helt otroligt egentligen, två bordtennis mästerskap i rad (1989-1991) med två svenskar i herrfinalen i singel. Kul att Persson vann här, även om J-O Waldner är en legend i sporten 👑🇸🇪
Both extremely nervous here, nerves have killed off many sportsman in finals through history. This is a terrible affliction and the one who can hold their nerve longer gets the chocolates.
@@jesselabadlabad1916 the game was most complex at that time. Fast and spinny 38mm ball, speed glue, hidden serves. To be successful you needed some very special talents like anticipation, good reflexes and creativity, which are difficult if not impossible to improve by training. Today it's more about athletics.
Yes, the speed was huge. Exactly ten years ago the celluloid ball changed for the new version, and now we have the ABS balls...the so called second generation of plastic balls. And around 25 years ago (I'm not very sure)was the change of the 38mm. That was a smaller ball (a little lighter) in a time of speed glue. So a small ball, lighter, faster rubbers due to the glue...uff it was totally different. Most of us who played in that time think that the ball was spinner too. So more speed, more spin, smaller ball...harder to catch the ball. One of the things is that the trajectory of the ball (due to the spin a lighter and smaller ball) was with an enormous curve. You could have a sidespin serve around the net. Well now with a lot of power in a loopspin o sidespin using the whole swing o your body and arm using sticky rubbers can get something similar, but not the same. Nowadays most of the players just smashed high balls no matter how heavy is the spin. Back then was difficult and nobody dared to do it because of the amount of spin the ball carried and the speed. A time ago I was trying to find an old 38 mm celluloid ball here at home (there must be one somewhere) and so i could show my students the difference...probably not the same glue, but a carbon blade and Tenergy or mx-p can do something similar.@@applemos6714
Jorgen Persson is one of the most underrated champions.
Yep,he was overshadowed by waldner (and correctly so) but he was one of the best still
Waldner and Persson in Sweden were like Federer and Wawrinka in Switzerland nowadays

He beat liu & kong at his prime at wttc team2000
He got the champion, then he was not underrated, we totally know his level is same as waldner
Both are incredible athletes, with an awesome mindset. I had the honor to meet Jorgen 20 years ago, super friendly and down to earth.

Persson also won the world cup 1991. It was his year.
A battle between two Gods of the Olympus of Table Tennis.
Eternal match.
I have this on VHS! Good to see it here! Great match!
Yes, this footage is lifted off of Reflex Sports DVDs. I am surprised to see this footage here.

Happy for Persson who deserved it. But JO was a real gentleman.
De hiányzik a gyors ragasztás,hallani a csattanási ütéseket,a pörgetést az érzést amit Klampar Tibor talált fel hozta létre 1980 🏓❤🇭🇺!
A legendary athlete!
We should show this match to Harimoto...
Why I don’t get it?
@@callmesid9759no shouting
@@callmesid9759Because Waldner and Persson don’t scream after every point like Heirmoto does.
que bonito era ese tenis de mesa, aunque la bola no se vea.
Good for Persson. Was probably not easy playing in the Waldner era.

@popi good point , controling your nerves and emotions brings alot of benefits and good focus inner stillnes
This was the ultimate peak of table tennis which the Chinese can only dream of attaining
please explain why?

Is this slow motion or something? :) Table tennis comes a long way...
It's depth of field on the camera lens. This ball could possibly be moving faster because it was 38 mm back then.
What is the Wanna be friends comments on RUclips? I keep on seeing it everywhere!
It's the same guy all the time, so probably a bot. Just report him
Jorge person se parece mucho a David Ahman😮
Like friendly match
Who do they beat in semis?
Waldner b Ma Wenge 21-18 18-21 21-7 21-15 Persson b Kim taek-soo 21-12 24-22 21-18
Flex Guillaume thank you.

ball was much smaller (38 mm) but heavier back then
How does that affect the game? Faster? Harder to spin?

Persson stoped waldner to be three time world champ very sad
Actually, Persson could have won 1989 too. He choked.
Waldner came 2nd in the WC 2 times and 3rd 2 times also. Waldners prime was early 90s
El Cobra prevailed.
Chop block from Person )
Glömmer aldrig när dom vann dubbeln i os mot kineserna :)
Kentucky Matangwah!!!
Unbelieveble waldi lost to him...
Persson is a legend, this was prime persson. He also beat liu goilang
@@sebastianjosefsson3620 it's the second persson. Jan Ove defeated the 1st persson in 1989.
