  • Fun activities and charity fundraisers for Rag Week at University College Dublin.
Students take the plunge into the icy waters of the UCD lake in the name of fun and charity.
Chairman of the Rag Week Committee Geoff Smyth says there is something for everybody during Rag Week including the usual impromptu student stunts, concerts, and many competitions.
For the men, there’s the hairiest legs competition and for the women, there’s a beauty pageant.
Despite some opposition to the idea of a beauty contest, Miss UCD 1974 Eimear McCooey sees the competition as a bit of fun and feels in no way exploited. A first year Arts student studying Philosophy, Psychology and English the new Miss UCD wins a trip for two to London.
Eimear McCooey is also one of the judges on the hairiest legs competition which is hosted by Gerry McNamara.
The aim of Miss UCD is to promote Rag Week.
Money raised from events throughout the week will be distributed among ten charities.
This episode of ‘Tangents’ was broadcast on 19 February 1974. The reporter is Doireann Ní Bhriain.

DIT rag week for me as a 17 year old in 2009 was just spent playing Pool and watching football over 3 quid pints in Bodkins with some Donegal lads. All the Dubs would moan about having to walk from Kevin St to Bolton St for pints, but we watched some good games there, had some quizzes and memorably enough were there the night after Thierry Henry's handball joking about how our studying French was a waste of a life. The bigger Irish 'university' colleges definitely have way too much ceremony. No discounted bar in DIT back then. No serious college societies unless you were just in it with a clan of your mates or wanted to fight the student princes to get into junior politics so you could get a handy Party or Union job after college; A college society was just a few stands and a few weirdos skimming college funds for pizza nights. I did gatecrash a few college dinners myself for 4 years straight until we were caught in the act at a huge uneaten buffet once, we still got away with our food but one experienced lad cottoned on to us in a 30 second confrontation so for once we didn't go back for seconds. Apparently some people also called these things at the start of each year 'Shag weeks' but when you have to commute from outside Dublin every single day you're more worried about getting drunk cheap and free sandwiches than the fine specimens like this lady in the video tbh. How fun it all is can probably be reflected in the fact that my happiest memories are the friendships I had then, all more or less bar 2 exceptions long since over now, and all the free shit I got away with stealing haha. In retrospect attending a party aged 17 from which several people including my commuting buddy caught swine flu without seeming to get sick myself is quite surreal given recent events-students definitely spread disease way too easily.

I went to UCD from 2000 to 2003 and I've been back frequently doing adult education or alumni stuff and I'm shocked how recognisable the lake, the buildings and even the lecture halls look. They really don't change any more than they have to do they?
