I wonder what Lil Louis thinks of this deconstruction? I like it. This is my favourite song of all time. I have been playing it for 30 years when I have to drive long distances, step, work out, clean the house. Its awesome.

Hey Ski. Love this track and so glad you deconstructed it. Just a little tidbit to share. I heard that in the peak of it's popularity at the Roxy in NYC it packed the dance floor of course but when the songs starts to slow down everyone would start slowly crouching down lower and lower until the beat stops and and that point everyone was laying flat on the dance floor. Then when the beat started slowing building up, everyone would slowly start rising up until the climax and when it kicked in again everyone was cheering and losing their minds. I've visualized that in my mind so many times and only wish I could have been there to witness it just once. : )

    • @norakat

ALL these young kids today are getting schooled. I was heading to my first year in college when this song was being released in US. My best friend worked at Polydor/Polygram.
This was REAL house music. NOT the crap we now hear in 2021/2022. I was in the Polydor/Polygram office when this deal was being made for importing this song to US,
on the west side of manhattan Polydor office before I had to go to college. Ohh and yes I have the original vinyl records I purchased from Vinyl Music Store in the Village including remixes made.
I still have a 10k record collection of dance music since the early 80's.... Famous record stores in that time was Disco-O-Rama, Beat Street, Rock-N-Soul and of course Vinyl Mania.
Hottest nightclubs at that time was Palladium, Limelight, Tunnel, 10-80, Sound Factory, Studio-54, Roseland, Emerald City, Paradise Garage, The Bank, The Loft, The Devils Nest,
Latin Quarters, The Bar Bat, Robots, Octagon, WarSaw, Bedrock's.... Aaah the good ol-days.
Burger King used to be across the street from McDonalds in Times Square. People used to come out of nightclubs starving their asses off and going to times square.
You would hear cars with loud music by the thousands and people all eating on both sides of times square in Burger King and McDonalds. Hahahaaaa.

My recollection is that various UK/European record label A&R men and execs went over for the Miami Music Conference and this track was just killing it in the clubs, which caused a bidding war between the British labels. Since Pete Tong at FFRR had Polygram's money behind him and he could see the track's potential, it was Tong that licenced the track. A few months later, it was number 2 in the pop charts, banned by the BBC, and Pete Tong was on his way to becoming a legend in the industry. (This was before he had a radio show). The track was massively influential on dance music in Europe, since it popularized the whole idea of hypnotic build-ups and drops that became a staple of techno and trance. But it might never have done anything if some DJs had never played it in Miami when the world's music execs came to party. It would have been easy for Tong to say "It slows down and stops in the middle. It will never work on the radio, let alone nightclubs, so we're not gonna buy that", but this track had something magical about it.

I have just reconstructed everything as well. With the same tools and sounds. DX7, the same preset. 808.. you name it. And it doesn't sound like in the video. Very strange. Does anyone know the reason? Because I really copied it 1:1. The first loop melody from the Dx7 sounds totally different and grooves differently too. Did he edit the sound on the DX7? That would explain it. Because, the preset "Lately Bass" is not set to poly by default. So I assume that he has edited the sound before. With the default preset it does not sound like in the video.

Lill Louis used a delay to modulate the sound and varied the speed on the fly to get continious changing repeats. That's what made the track hypnotizing and gave it it's soul.
