Back in the 1960s his wife Morag was my art teacher at Woodside Public School in Oakville, ON. She also sang in a band called "Wooden Nickel" that used to play at our school dances.

Genius level comedy! That’s why it lasted 15 years! He’s an incredibly nice guy, too! I’ve had the pleasure of meeting him a few times, over my years in the entertainment business! Steve Smith wrote 80% of the jokes! Peace
American lady here: I grew up watching Red Green on PBS, and it's been one of my all time favorite comedies. Once, I actually talked my high school physics teacher into using a project from the show as a way to illustrate a specific concept. It worked beautifully 😁
A culturally significant show using the Canadian dad in his garage trope. I had an uncle Red, and he could build anything, catch anything and fix anything. This gives me the feels! Thanks!
You really need to see more of the Red Green show. Steve Smith also has some Great Red Green stand up comedy. He is very funny but never off color. Very popular in my home.
I grew up watching Red Green on PBS as kid in Kentucky. He's the reason i got so handy with rigging stuff up and building unique things around the house
Red Green was a big part of my childhood. Watching his show as a kid. He would crack me up, he was such a funny character and such a great comedian. Fyi, a HUGE part of the show is duct tape 😂 he uses it on EVERYTHING!😂
Oh man. I used to watch the Red Green Show every day before school and I absolutely loved it. Red always reminded me of my father and grandfather. It's definitely a show that has aged well.

Hahaha... I'm Canadian and I've watched a lot of The Red Green Show, but I'd never seen this episode. "Handyman Corner" and "Adventures with Bill" were always the best segments!
The thing about Red Green was that everyone could see themselves in his character or their fathers. When I was a kid I remember helping my dad with little projects similar the ones in the show. Those were the best times for sure.
I grew up with this show in Canada , whenever I was home sick from school this was the show I looked forward to seeing. Red Green was like Canada’s fun grandpa
More of the Red Green Show please. If you thought that was funny you are in for a treat. Handymans corner,. The possum Lodge word game. Adventures with Bill., anything with Ranger Gord.. this show is hilarious. There are highlight videos of some of these segments but I would suggest watching a full episode eventually. Each episode is exactly 20 minutes and 22 seconds. The humor is timeless. Enjoy.👍🍻🇨🇦
My Grampy loved the show because he too was a self-made handyman and fisherman (also opened a garage in Miramichi, NB which his son took over). Also incredibly clumsy and once sawed through a fridge accidentally while trying to make a doorway.. so this was his humour. I loved this show
Haha yeah, he never lived it down. This was a man who used dynamite for yardwork and once got not one but TWO fishhooks in his head XD Him and his buddy would just stab each other with dinner knives too and my Grammy would get all upset because it was at the dinner table. He also shot squirrels trying to get at his birdfeeder all day and would just bring in the body and throw it on the table. Very rough old school guy but the best Grampy :) @@casualcausalityy
Canada has a long and rich history of sketch comedy meets sit com style shows going back into the 1970s with SCTV, to Kids in the Hall, Trailer Park Boys, and of course The Red Green Show to name a few. I actually saw a taping of the show in the mid 90s and it was wonderful. I always liked their Adventures With Bill and Word Association skits on the Red Green Show. If your looking for more Red Green, they’d be where I start.
This was my childhood, sneaking my way to the TV at night, turn the channel to PBS with the volume down low, and spend an hour with Uncle Red and the whole gang up there in Possum Lodge. It wasn't until I got old enough to know the innuendos that I loved it even more! Another Canadian here, verifying that this is a classic through and through. 8:53 is the mantra which I have lived by. Truer words have rarely been spoken.
when it was a kid at summer camp we went on a hike and came across them filming a segment of this show. we sat the grass and watched for a bit. as we left i waved at red green and he waved back. it was awesome.
I love this show. It's just fun. The segments, like 'Handyman Corner' are always so much fun because of how ridiculous they can be. And they actually had to make all the things Red created. Whether they worked or not could/would rely on clever editing, but it's still all real. I miss shows like this. I highly suggest 'Adventures with Bill' & 'The Possum Lodger Word Game'. Or watch full episodes. Either way, I hope you check out more from 'The Red Green Show'
From what I remember, almost everything on "Handyman Corner" could work. Wether-or-not it was practical or would keep working in the long run is another thing, but the "could work" vastly outnumbered the "would never work".
OMG I forgot how funny this was! Tyler, thank you for making this Canadian fall in love with my country all over again. So much good in such tumultuous times. I'd love to see a video of when the Raptor's won. Toronto's last HUGE crowd just before Covid hit. And being named Laura, I am especially fond of Laura Secord and her chocolates. Childhood treat for sure!
I watched Red/Green for years. Its a classic here in Can. Another you should look up is Corner Gas, based in Sask. Also a great laugh. Or a third nostalgic show from Can is Beachcombers from BC coastal area. All great.
Some other notable Canadian humour shows are This Hour has 22 minutes, Royal Canadian Air Farce, and Letterkenny come to mind. The catch phrase of the show is "if they dont find you handsome they should at least find you handy" and the best tool for everything is duct tape. At the end of every episode the neighborhood gets together at Possum Lodge and start the beginning of a meeting, then the show ends.
Oddly enough I used to watch every episode in my teens on a US station from Canada. Handy Man Corner and Adventures with Bill were always my favorite segments of the show.
Yes!!! Finally!!!! Ive loved this show forever!!! oh, and, by the way, steve smith, the guy who plays red green, studied engineering for a little bit. im not sure what kind of engineering, but he did. and im 100% sure he wrote and produced all 300 episodes of the series.
May I suggest a segment titled 'Variable Wheelbase'. It impressed me mostly by it's intelligence and resourcefulness. Should be mandatory viewing for car makers executives and designers!
The nice thing is all of the shows are posted to youtube under their channel... so those of us Canadians can share the love of the show. If you watch them in order... you can see the growth of tech for making shows. The first season even had hand-mics and a mic wire coming off Red and some others (but that was early 90s, so wasn't surprised). The reason for the duct tape transitions... you missed how he does all his connections: duct tape. Later seasons were even sponsored by 3M duct tape.
Red green is definitely the writer. He used to do a sketch/variety show with his wife. I think it was called Smith and Smith. The character Red Green was from one of the reoccurring sketches they did. When his wife Morag no longer wanted to continue doing Smith and Smith, he brainstormed The Red Green show, and the magic continued to humour the English speaking world for generations.
Red Green started as a short segment during the "Smith and Smith" show where he gave some advice ( more or less). It later became a full "Red Green" show. A Forida station bought season #3 and it was so popular the station bought more. People have become members of Possum Lodge - myself included. He had 300 episodes over 15 years. The Lodge motto is something like, "When all else fails, like down and die" - the same as a possum. The lodge prayer is, "I'm a man, I can change, if Ihave to, amen." Try to find his advice to teenagers.
It was also inspired by an old fishing show by Red Fisher, Scuttlebutt Lodge that aired back in the 60’s & 70’s. Red Green show was filmed in my neck of the woods with many scenes recorded at Christie Conservation Area. Some of you may remember his show that aired prior to Red Green, Smith & Smith, a variety show hosted by both Steve and his wife Margo.
I remember the Red Green character from Smith & Smith. My favourite visual was the sign on the side of the original pickup - Red Green Hunt_n_ & F___ing Lodg_. The underscores were the missing letters. But Red often spoke of his hunting and fishing lodge.
Plus the fact that Canadians don't have to pay taxes on our game show winnings, unlike in the US. When we win, we get to keep it all; when Americans win, the IRS gets a chunk of it.
This show reminds me of my mom. We watched Smith and Smith together. When that ended we watched The Red Green Show. His humor reminds me of my family and laughter. I love this show and I am glad you posted it but, you Mr. Bucket Sir made me cry. So many memories.
Red Green is a character spinoff from an earlier show that Steven Smith did with his wife, Morag. That show was called The Smith and Smith Comedy Mill or just “Smith & Smith”. Great humour, loveable character, absolutely hilarious. My siblings and I grew up on this stuff and it was our family’s favourite show. 🇨🇦
Yes, i was shown he in the U.S. on PBS stations, and we watched i faithfully every week. Very original and clever comedy We suggest that you find a full episode on the internet, it back, and enjoy it ! 😂
Absolutely the best show. I went to a few tapings & met him quite a few times as he was friends with my aunt & uncle because he filmed at the park they took care of. He's an amazingly kind man. Before this show he had a variety show with his wife, Morag, called Smith & Smith. He writes everything. Also, his nephew Harold is geeky but lovable
@@Shan_DalamaniI don’t think so. Most of the scenes filmed there were these ones. I think the Winter of our Discount Tent was filmed in and around the city of Hamilton (our home town)
I am blessed to have been to three recordings of the show. Each time, invited to be part of the end credits. Steve Smith was very friendly and a pleasure to be around. The rest of the ensemble were gracious and funny as well. Good times. P.S. even my ex gf was in an episode!
As a little kid in the early 80s, I first saw Red Green as a sketch on Smith & Smith before it was its own show. Red Green and Mr. Canoehead (from a different sketch comedy show) are two of the best & funniest Canadian characters of my childhood. 🤣🇨🇦
Absolutely loved RED GREEN and the Man's prayer. "I'm a man, and I can change. If I have to. I guess." Not to mention "keep your stick on the ice". Another hilarious Canadian character comic was Charlie Farqueson. You might remember seeing him guest star on "Hee Haw".
This show was filmed in Hamilton Ontario which is about 45 km from my house. I believe it was produced by CHCH TV from that city. He ended every show at Possum Lodge and his parting line was “keep your stick on the ice”.
My brother was in an episode of this show, although he’s only heard and not seen. It’s the episode (Pardi Gras) where the Possum Lake music teacher retires and leaves his tuba collection to the lodge. My brother plays the tuba behind the set while Red pretends to play and yells (Ow!) when Red kicks him for continuing to play when he shouldn’t.
He and his wife used to do another show before this one called The Comedy Mill and it was good too. Then he started this show and it went crazy! You will have to see the duck tape movie he did too! Priceless humour!
I don't know what the actual ratings were like for the show, but it was popular enough to get a theatrically released movie so I would imagine it did fairly well. I was a teen when it was on and I watched and enjoyed it all the time.
I loved it, especially his "Possum Lodge" quips with the men giving their pledge "I'm a man, and I can change, if I have to, I guess"!

Is that where they filmed "Now is the Winter of our Discount Tent"?
@@Shan_DalamaniI don’t think so. Most of the scenes filmed there were these ones. I think the Winter of our Discount Tent was filmed in and around the city of Hamilton (our home town)
This is the real Canadian humour.
This show was a classic, I loved watching this. Steve Smith and his wife used to have a sketch comedy show called Smith & Smith in the 80's.
I always watched red green as a teen. I still look up clips, and miss the show. Absolutely loved it.
Red Green is up there with Wayne and Shuster. Duck tape fixes everything!
I loved The Red Green Show and The New Red Green Show so much!
I am blessed to have been to three recordings of the show. Each time, invited to be part of the end credits. Steve Smith was very friendly and a pleasure to be around. The rest of the ensemble were gracious and funny as well. Good times. P.S. even my ex gf was in an episode!
They made a movie based on this show, "Duct Tape Forever". It's hilarious!
Red Green show was the funniest comedy show you ever wanted to see. Just the mention of the show brought a laugh and a smile
I loved Red Green. He was the ultimate Canadian red kneck. Always cracked me up , my comedic hero
Strangely I, as a Canadian, watched most of this show on PBS.
There is so much content. The whole cast are genius.
As a little kid in the early 80s, I first saw Red Green as a sketch on Smith & Smith before it was its own show. Red Green and Mr. Canoehead (from a different sketch comedy show) are two of the best & funniest Canadian characters of my childhood. 🤣🇨🇦
Yes! Mr. Canoehead! Canada's greatest superhero. I thought Four On The Floor was lost to time. I'm glad at least someone remembers.
You can put a playlist of this show on at night when you go to bed for some pure ASMR
