I think I first got into sonic by just playing sonic 1 on an online emulator on some random website when I was a kid (or it might have been ultimate flash sonic, not sure) maybe smth around 2013, then some time later my dad cracked sonic gens for me which actually got me interested in the whole sonic series after I beat the game, and now many years later I basically have all the sonic games bought on steam lol
I got into sonic around 2015, when I was 6. My favourite iteration of the blue blur is probably Japanese Classic Sonic, specifically the Sonic 3 sprite.
My parents introduced me to Sonic when I was less than two years old because they were games, but my first solid memory is of the Game Gear games and the cartoons being on in the morning when I was super young! 😄
In terms of my favorite versions of the character: modern Sonic and movie Sonic. If we’re talking specifics, my favorite Sonic’s would be: Dark Era Sonic, SA2 Sonic, and Movie Sonic. I love Sonic’s depiction in Unleashed and the Storybook games because he’s still the cocky and impatient hero who likes to joke around that we all know, but he also knows when to be more serious. He’s kind-hearted, he puts others first, and he never gives up even when he’s beaten down and goes by his own way. SA2 Sonic I love because he embraces more of the “free as the wind” personality. He does things his own way and “is just a guy who loves adventure.” He has more of an attitude than Dark Era Sonic, but still not to a point where it feels annoying. Movie Sonic I love because I like how they’re going for the sorta “MCU Spider-Man” approach with him. It’s a really different take on Sonic, but imo, it’s not bad at all. I like how as the movies progress, he’s becoming more and more evolved and maybe by movie 3, he’ll be even more like the hero we all know and love, kinda like No Way Home ended with him being more like the Spider-Man in the comics. In short, every Sonic I feel like adds something unique that can be appreciated. These are just my personal favorites.
At my school everybody keeps bullying me and commenting on my tiktoks and youtube videos. But when I’m surrounded by Sonic fans like you Muggie, I feel safe and accepted. 😁
My story was like this. I was introduced to Sonic when I went to my cousin's house and played Mario & Sonic at the Olympics. A year later, my mom gave my sister and I the Winter version for Christmas. Now that we actually owned a game, we started to get interested in Sonic seperate from Mario. We wanted to get Sonic Heroes, which had a lot of content in M&S2010, but we didnt have a gamecube controller or card, so we went with Secret Rings instead. This was still the time when motion controls were awesome, so we didnt mind. We had fun. Later, my sister would discover Sonic X on RUclips and we watched it together. We also watched the cutscenes of Sonic 06 since we didnt have either console. (We actually liked the stories for the most part since we were young and weren't dealing with bad gameplay). By the time Generations came out, my sister started to lose interest in the series aside from the Olympic games. But I still kept playing them, and Generations made me want to play the older games (and we did eventually get Gamecube controllers and memory cards for the wii) She kind of fell into the mocking Sonic group after becoming a fan of the Game Grumps, so we kind of disagree a lot on Sonic now. But she doesnt take it to far.
I got into Sonic when I was about 11 myself. I forget how exacly it happened, other than I'm pretty sure seeing Sonic X clips on RUclips had a big role in that. I was watching episodes on RUclips before I got my hands on a game, the first of which was Unleashed. Which, by the way, is still my favorite in the series. I love the Werehog, I love the story, I love everything about it! And that's without me having access to the "good" version! I started with the PS2 release and got a Wii copy second hand later, once my PS2 started having issues reading discs. I still haven't played the HD PS3/Xbox 360 version outside of one play session at a friend's place a couple years ago. I'm 24 now, and Sonic is still very important to me. The entire series is near and dear to my heart. I love the movies, because even if this is a very different Sonic I like seeing different interpretations of him and his friends. I read the Fleetway Comics when I was 17 or so and I liked them, once again a very different interpretation but still interesting. Even if I sometimes drift a little further from the Sonic series as I get interested in something new (Xenoblade, Pokemon, whatever else may come next...) I still always come back to it, and I don't think I'll ever be able to leave Sonic behind completely. My desktop wallpaper is an official Sonic Channel wallpaper, and the exact one I use changes each month. Has been for years, with only a couple months on occasion where I went for something different. I still have trouble drawing human characters sometimes, because I draw Sonic and his friends so much more. I already pre-ordered Sonic x Shadow Generations, despite already having Generations via Steam. I even run Sonictober, out of love for the series. This cool blue hedgehog just means so much to me, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
really liked the 36-Minute Chunky Frontiers video you did on your main channel (and the Dreamcast one) so it’s cool seeing you committing to these essays videos on the side!
I love this retrospective! The way you explain what Sonic means to you and why is really charming! Hearing your interpretation of Sonic through the decades, too, makes me notice how you spun those interpretations into your cartoons as well. It's neat how all the stuff comes full circle! Anyways, I love the essay style! Opinionated, factual, and whatnot it's all very fascinating. Excited to see more!
My first experience with Sonic was through Sonic Mega Collection Plus on the Xbox in the late 2000’s. It contained games from the Genesis as well as the Game Gear but Sonic 2 was the one that impacted me the most since it introduced me to my all time favorite Tails. Since most of my experience came from the dark era and Sonic X I got to grow up with the sonic that still had his attitude from the 90’s but was more understanding and as you mentioned put others before themselves. Also I couldn’t help but shed a tear when you mentioned Chip 😢
These video essay are fire as hell Mikey! Glad to see you branching out more! And to answer the question my first exposure to sonic the hedgehog was Sonic 06 I had so many fond memories of playing the game, even now when I see the issues with the game I still can’t bring myself to hate it because it introduced me to this series I love dearly and without sonic I wouldn’t have met my friends like Akuta, Bucky, SNESS, Slisa, you, Axel, ect!
Ain’t no way Mikey as actually AS OLD AS SONIC HIMSELF?! I’ve seen this guy’s face on Social Media before he looks soooo much younger! How the Heck is he 32?:0
What got me into Sonic was his edge. There was this anime like quality that made him unapologetically cool and with his character under the pen of Shiro Maekawa, he became my favorite character in fiction. I do hate how Sega is trying phase out that rawness and overall Japanese edge that made Sonic cool for something more cutesy, comedic and quirky as seen with the Sonic movies and Sonic Prime. Sonic feels less like Naruto and Dragon Ball and more like Steven Universe or TMNT Mutant Mayhem (TMNT also went through this same thing with Rise & MM over 2003 & 2007)
For about a year now, I’ve been trying to figure out how to describe what I loved about how Sonic used to be, and some of my frustrations with his character Colors-onwards. This video is spot on. It’s almost indescribable how perfectly blended cool, edgy, and maturity was into Sonic and how genuine it was. But nowadays, that blend is just not there. He leans too far into certain aspects of his character instead of being the complete package that he once was.
Amazing video, Mikey! Sonic on the Genesis was my first game at the age of like 3 or so. I also saw more of the Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog Sonic than Satam. I even got some of the old Archie comics. That little blue dude with attitude will always be in my heart but to be honest there's not really any version of Sonic himself that I dislike. (Except maybe "classic" Sonic) But I think you nailed it. Sonic is who he needs to be for his games and it always works so long as he's doing the right thing and being a little cheeky doing it.
The first time i have the experience with Sonic is from 2019, when my dad told me the Undertale is not for kids, and sure i was 9-year-old kid, but when i exploring on the Google of my dad's phone, i found the image of Sonic, and i like him and tell my dad of my favorite series is : Dragon Ball, Ben 10, Steven Universe and Sonic! And my dad like it, the fact he played Sonic on SEGA Genesis with his friends, he doesn't have an SEGA Genesis because is rare for Brazil, and through over the ears i learned a lot about Sonic and i start treating him like an cool hero and easy to draw him in the different styles
Do you know why I love Sonic series? Because this series is for me about family, friendship and sticking together no matter what. Add Spider-Man mentality but a little bit simplyfied and you have a series that's has a lot to say and makes you feel something!
I think a main reason why sonic has always been all over the place in terms of personality is due to the region in charge of writing and such. In the 90's the cocky dick sonic (ew) was the standard. But in JP even back in the 90's his personality was closer to what he was in thr adventure games and dark age games even if it wasnt shown off much, mostly shown through the manuals in the classic games and such.
I'm really enjoying the new content you got going on for this channel so far. It would great to hear more of your thoughts on other media besides Sonic as well. Subbed! 👍
Thank you for this just *thank you.* More people these days need to understand this and learn to be open minded. 1. No, if you don’t like a certain characterization you don’t have to like it. But understand there has never been a *definitive* characterization because Sonic hasn’t been consistently one thing. Not even in the games. 2. I agree with the not making eveything canon thing. It only adds more unnecessary confusion that’ll cause more problems than solve them. I enjoyed this video and personally try to find an appropriation for any version of this character. Even with their flaws. Because not everything has to be perfect to be entertaining.
I still have my Model 2 SEGA Genesis and _Sonic the Hedgehog 2_ cart. Now, getting it all to *_WORK_* with modern televisions and what not… *_THAT'S_* another story! 🥴 Time to break out the circuit tester and soldering iron, I suppose…
Shit my oc (A shark) takes alot of the suttle nice charms like his big heart and adventurous nature. While still being unique enough thou, dont wanna be a copycat Hes a role model like sonic is all
Classic sonics personality in the IDW comics for the 30th anniversary actually gives us back the cocky Sonic personality and he is a bit of a dick in them but ultimately for me it’s sonic
When did you get into Sonic, and what is your favorite interpretation of him? Let me know!

“What you see is what you get, just a guy who loves adventure.” That’s the most consistent thing about Sonic, as it should be.
At my school everybody keeps bullying me and commenting on my tiktoks and youtube videos. But when I’m surrounded by Sonic fans like you Muggie, I feel safe and accepted. 😁
This comment reminded me of my terrible past
Same!
@@king_cheese768 really? Wow! Their asses!
Do people still shit on sonic? I thought that died down the second the movie came out.
@@micjimster4845 Nuh uh they still do that just less
This whole retrospective is just an example of why we all loved sonic in the first place
0:11 As somebody whose constantly harassed by both Sonic and Mario merch everywhere I go, I can super relate-
I'm a 90's baby so of course the blue bleezie popped up every millisecond 😂

Classic sonics personality in the IDW comics for the 30th anniversary actually gives us back the cocky Sonic personality and he is a bit of a dick in them but ultimately for me it’s sonic
