    It goes a little farther than the death of his mom. She had a stroke when he was a kid, and lived out the rest of her life paralyzed. His anger is more about that, than her death.

    it is definitely an indictment on organized religion. as many of the other posters mentioned. he mother had a stroke when he was 11 years old and the church she was a part of insisted and convinced her god would take care of it, so with that she lived the next 27 and a half years (10,000 days - which is the name of a Tool album) as an invalid (paralyzed) yet she never lost her faith even as her church eventually turned its back on her. So his yelling F*ck your Dog is aimed at the church, and the line 'so many ways for me to show you how your dogma has abandoned you' is meant somewhat for her. ' F*ck your lord, your christ. he's the one who did this to your and left you this way'.
    But as mentioned on the Tool album 10,000 Days there is a pair of songs Wings for Marie (his mother's name) and 10,000 Days. where he shows his growth and understanding and demanding God let his mother in and give her her wings. its a hauntingly beautiful yet heavy song.
    i would also suggest the Tool song 'JIMMY" which is a letter to his 11 year old self about disconnecting from the emotion of loosing his mother when she had the stroke and could no longer care for him and emotionally leaving that child behind to fend for himself. Maynard's story is very intriguing

    As someone who has religious parents, I think the pain comes from not ever feeling like you can have a real connection with someone who is very strictly religious. I left religion and I cant talk about any of my own human struggles with them because I get "oh you just need Jesus." Any connection outside of that is unavailable. Its a painful situation. Then losing that parent, must be a confusing and painful feeling. I love this song, makes me feel like I'm not alone leaving religion 🖤

    I think that Tool represents Maynard's masculinity where he tends to express himself more aggressively, while APC represents his vulnerability and feminity. I love both bands and my mood dictates which I listen to and when. I believe Maynard said something very similar in an interview once. Love that you guys are digging and delving into both bands. Keep it up! 👌🌀
    Also, as a fellow Christian, Judith was a hard pill for me to swallow at first. But when you listen to Wings For Marie (parts 1 and 2) by Tool, you can truly feel Maynard's resolve and acceptance of his mother's faith. It's a beautiful tribute. Def check it out.

    I think he came to terms with it this was a while back. Maynard has had a hard life and child hood and it comes out in his music. If you follow Tool through their Albums it is pretty much the story of Maynards life and growing spiritually through out becoming a better person for it it is pretty amazing and Inspiring.

  • @mph8er
    @mph8er Год назад

    I think the issue of being someone deeply religious is that you have a closed mind. You almost have to. If you have too much empathy and put yourself too much in their shoes, it's very difficult to see anything but darkness. If you're too open-minded, you look at all the other different beliefs in the world and wonder how your faith is any different or more true than theirs.
    The truth is, you don't know what they dealt with. You aren't them. This song isn't even about her death, it's about the suffering she was put through. 10000 Days, one of Tool's albums, is named after how long she suffered after being paralyzed. Judith was made while she was still alive, though that album was made after she passed. You're experiencing a single unadulterated point in a person's life that was captured for the world to see without realizing that it isn't the end of the story or of his life. Most of today's music doesn't go that personal.
    Grief is a process and sometimes that process involves the loss of faith and the regaining of it later. 10000 days is an entire album about the mixed feelings he has about it all. Wings for Marie Part 1 and 2 (Judith Marie Keenan was her full name), Right in Two, among several others are songs I'd recommend to see how the rest of this story plays out.

  • @jacksmith4460
    @jacksmith4460 Год назад

    you should listen to Marie part 1 and part 2 as in a way this is part 1 and those 2 tracks (which roll into each other) are the 2nd part and it shows 1) how Raw the emotion was when he wrote "Judith" and 2) how much his POV matured in the years that followed towards the situation and I would say towards religion too. I think she was actually alive when he wrote this and Marie part 1 and part 2 were written after she died (could be wrong about the timeline)
