    Just programmed my 2007 Audi A8 battery. No problems. I purchased the 3 VIN option because I have 2 Audis and dealership in my area is price prohibitive. The wanted $600 to install the battery. I told the parts guy I had VCDS and he gave me a dirty look. Lol. Not only did I save $ but now I have the VCDS software, Im always working on my cars so I was glad to drop $200 on this. Great video, however there is one piece of information which is not really correct. You do not need to use a genuine battery. There is nothing special about the OEM battery - it does not have unicorn horn dust in it! The part number, manufacturer and serial number are text only fields. We have validated this, and as long as the fields are populated it will work fine. What is important is the nominated capacity of the new battery (Ah) is the same as the battery which is being replaced, as well as the construction (i.e. replace AGM with AGM). Changing the serial number will trigger the BEM to forget any learned values for the old battery and start learning the new battery.
    By the way, I love my VCDS :-)

    A couple of important hints. If you buy a new battery (like I did) from Audi, and perhaps VW and others, the manufacturer may not be in the listed of accepted one for the middle code you enter. I bought a new one from the dealer today and it was a CCL battery, which isn't in the list. At that point, just use another code from the list. It doesn't matter.
    I also read that if going non-OEM, just take the old one and change one of the later digits in the third group, increasing it by 1. That's it. I went OEM since the original just died yesterday on a 2013 S4 with 120k miles, so if it lasted that long, I think going the same route for $50 more than a cheapie battery was a smart move.

  • @rickthayer7684
    @rickthayer7684 8 лет назад +38

    RossTech-its not about being the correct battery or incorrect battery. Its about buying a aftermarket replacement part instead of buying a often overpriced dealership part. If I peel the stickers off a Varta and a East Penn battery you really think that even a Audi tech can tell the difference? Do you also think that every tank of fuel is inferior to the fuel the car shipped with :P? Or that a bulb that isn't OEM is inferior as well? This isn't a ECM or a BCM. Its a storage device that uses chemicals to make electricity. Something that is pretty universal from Ford, Nissan, GM, VW and every other brand. Its not rocket science. This just a way to milk money from someone. Its not about using "the wrong battery" (cue the dramatic music). Ever think that the reason someone can afford a $40,000 car is because they don't spend money needlessly?

    • @TheUweRoss
      @TheUweRoss 8 лет назад +12

      Yes, it's just a battery, but the Battery Management module makes certain assumptions about the battery's characteristics based on the battery coding. I know the dealer wanted to charge $80 for coding, but i thought probably just trying to rip me off and i'd try the swap without paying, and it worked out. The CC's are long sold, but i still have the Gti and Tig, should i bother updating ? or just leave as is.

      My understanding of this system is that as long as the battery you replaced didn't force the ECM into "Power Saving Mode" AND the new battery is very close (within 1-2 Ah of the battery being replaced), then the ECU will "learn" the new battery.
      It doesn't actually learn the new battery as the battery has no data link to the ECU, but the programming within the ECU will "reset" the learned parameters so it doesn't trigger certain sensors or low voltage alarms.
      I'm in the process of resetting a car that went into Power Saving because of a bad battery. I replaced the battery without knowing about this MMI Power Management System and 5 minutes into the test drive the car gave me a "alternator not charging battery" warning before it went bat shit crazy. It's fine now, but I initially looked into relays and fuses as this issue caused a number of electrical failures. The engine ran, but no other system in the car functioned including lights, transmission, abs, and stability control. As far as the car was concerned, those systems weren't even present.

    How do you add a Yuasa battery to an Audi's system by using VCDS?
    TPS (which is the trade section of Volkswagen Group here in the UK) only now supply Yuasa batteries - so they are effectively now the OEM battery for all VAG group cars in the UK.
    However, Yuasa isn't a manufacturer that is showing in the drop-down menu within VCDS when you try to update the battery information, and worse, Yuasa batteries don't have a BEM code on the side of the battery to fill in the other required parts of the information to do a proper job of re-coding the car with a new battery!

      False.
      "Energy management system" should give you a clue.
      These systems adjust how they charge your batter. Based on the values that have been stored.
      When you install a new battery. It can be over charged. Because the system is still trying to give what it still thinks is an old battery, a more aggressive charge. You also will not have proper values to indicate how your new batter health is.
      The only time you could get away with not coding. Is when you replace a good battery, before it has degraded.
