That’s so crazy you mentioned nostalgia. I read about it in a magazine when I was a kid and I have cherished it since I was maybe 11 or 12. I’m 24 for reference
No way, I have literally never seen someone talk about Nostalgia… me and my best friend found it at a thrift store in 2010 and LOVED it. Awesome character designs too. Man that was a treat to see
Great list! Adding Xenogears, Phantasy Star 2 & 4, and Wild Arms. Xenogears blew me away, even with an incomplete second disc I was hooked with the story. Loved the sprites on 3D backgrounds. Fun exploration and combat systems. Fantastic and complex characters. Game needs an HD remaster. For the SRPG and TRPG lovers consider Shining Force. Shining Force 3 was insanely ambitious with 3 Episodes, unfortunately only Japan received Ep 2 & 3, but can be emulated with translation patches. Sega, please bring this series back!
Y'know I'm very surprised Sands of Destruction wasn't mentioned as I'm pretty sure it's the most forgotten DS RPG, it's by Sega & it has an interesting system where it's kinda action turn based & you get perks depending on what voice clips you used alongside an interesting subversion of the RPG formula as instead of trying to gather the elements to save the world's balance Ala final fantasy 1, instead you're trying to destroy the world with said elements, I won't explain why but you'll see why they think this is the only option
@ yeah I agree, it's very slept on as someone that grew up with the DS, it surprised me after wanting to see what it's like especially when it was a Sega game even if I may now love The World Ends With You more by now, Sands of Destruction was a neat hidden gem for the system which is wild that it's technically more hidden gem than TWEWY because it has a sequel well that & was featured in KH & even recently in Reynatis
@@videogamerzero1schannel true, RPGs and jrpgs were always my favorite genre, especially when it comes to hidden gems like terranigma, magma carta, Onimusha tactics, Laplace's demon ect. Finding new ones to play is such a great time for me.
While it’s never been said officially as far as I know, I don’t think Skies of Arcadia is just “very One Piece”, but I’d actually go so far as to say that SoA wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for One Piece. The development period for SoA runs parallel with when One Piece started gaining real popularity in Japan (roughly around the Arlong Park arc), and the One Piece anime started airing the same year SoA started development. And there’s so many small details in SoA that are similar to One Piece that I feel it’s impossible it didn’t influence SoA’s creation. When I played SoA on GC back in 2003 I’d also just started reading One Piece, and I remember at the time being struck by how many similarities there were (even though of course the overall plot is very different).
I’ve been playing JRPGs for a while and I really feel in love with the genre! And there are so many games that are not from Square Enix that people should try. If you are reading this, please try playing Suikoden I and II. They will be re-released in March and It is other game that is worth your time. I’ve really enjoyed the video!
Lunar SSS kicked my ass as a kid when it came out on PS1. I even did a little bit of grinding and it was barely enough. At the very least this game made me think that I was thankful for not playing NES RPGs. When I went to return the game, I saw Suikoden (not knowing the gem it was) for sale and bough that and had a blast.
It’s interesting you mentioned Ni no Kuni, because I remember playing the PS3 version and thinking the White Witch aspects of the game feeling very forced and at odds with the rest of the game’s story, like it was added by somebody who didn’t understand the point of the original game (at least that’s how it felt having never played the DS game) And that if it weren’t for that, it would be a very beautiful and subtle story about a boy fleeing into an imaginated world of his own making as a way to cope with the loss of his mother, culminating in him having to face his own repressed fears, accepting the loss, and finding the strength to move on.
Simmons, Sega renewed the Skies of Arcadia trademark, both the Dreamcast and GameCube versions. A re-release to modern consoles? Sure, that'd be great. A possible revival of the series? Sure, that'd be superb great.
I always feel Saga Frontier 2 deserves a shout out, i know it's not perfect and it could just be because it was one of my first jrpgs as a kid alongside FF7 & 8 but I've always thought this game was beautiful and personally i loved the combat system although the game doesn't teach you how to use it very well.
Simmons, ever try an rpg on ps2 called Radiata Stories? Its SEVERELY underrated. BUT the mc is a bit of a blockhead, and there's time based recruitment of characters.
I still remember laughing my ass of at the weapon store complaining about having to sell his weapons to anyone in general 😂 Also "E-E-E-E-EGG?" 😂 Edit: also unfortunately remember Gabriel Celesta pre-battle cutscene...🤮😂
I think the regular Grandia 1 download on ps5 is great, it's not like the remaster version, it's like the ps3 port. ALSO, Lufia 2 is my absolute favorite SNES game, hands down. I don't want to discount the DS remake because there's clearly a lot of work put into that one, I just don't like how they changed the characters, storytelling, and game play. I think the original Lufia 2 is a masterpiece, it hits so hard for me. It also has a built in random dungeon generator that you can play over and over.
I was hoping grandia hd collection was more readily available. It's $100+tax up here in Canada. eBay has listings and with shipping it's in the $90 range on the low end. I really wish limited run games was not the only place making these physical copies outside the developers because that limited market just makes it a resellers profit if you want physical. Really wish there was another way for physical and not be limited the way they do things. Let them make special bundles or whatever for the collectors but allow the normal as game to be purchased for normal prices anytime :/ rant
Even people who loved Xenogears back in the day recognize that it’s a rushed mess that ran out of money & time, never lived up to its potential, and just isn’t on the same level as the best RPGs on the system.

Bro I love that you introduce the games then show a trailer before continuing. The DS has some wonderful RPGs. Very thankful for R4 cards
Simmons: this isn't a top ten this isn't a ranking. Also simmons in the dreamcast video: SKIES!
Man, I wish they’d remaster The Last Story.

Saw Matt was gonna talk about Skies, even if for 5 mins, and knew it was for me.
for the Grandia HD, on steam there is actually guide to remove the filters, making it look good again
i really love "The Last Story" it was such a great experience to play its definitively my favorite top ten game
The last story mentioned 😢🎉🫡🤺🔥🔥🗣️🗣️🔥

Just mentioned it in another comment thread, the story of that game really grabbed me with how good it was😊

@@ReSF91 I should play Onimusha tactics when I play more of the mainline series
Nintendo DS it’s really a forgotten JRPG power house.
Remember Sands of Destruction? Very fun rpg😊

Considering Ladis and Briggs are just Lucky Roux and Ben Beckman, I mean, yeah. There was a clear homage.
Good list! I’d also recommend Sands of Destruction. I spent an ungodly amount of time on that DS game. Even more than Pokemon.

Skies mentioned right off the bat, take my like.

Skies of Arcadia might be getting a rerelease now, so it'll be more accessible. Never played it, so I'm really interested in checking it out
Sega said "we are not a porting company" when people just want then to port their Saturn and Dreamcast games they destroyed

Hopefully one day Sega remasters Skies, I’ve never played it but it looks really cool.
I will always forever stan Legend of Legaia for PS1
I'd kill for a Skies of Arcadia remake.

Lunar is amazing but for me Lunar 2 blows it out of the water. Loved it since Sega CD. As you can probably tell
Awesome! Thanks Simmons!
Gamesack & Skies of Arcadia
The Lunar Sega CD opening slaps way harder. But I'm excited to play it for the millionth time.

I loved Bk2 the story and game play was amazing chaotic dance is an awesome track in one of the best boss fights
4:48 this part of the opening sounds very Grandia, man i wish gamearts made a new one😢
Lythero loosing his mind
battletoads
Valkyrie Profile Covenant of the Plume for the DS is better than most of these.
Id never recommend persona without telling them its a grindy af teen kid sim and all of them share the same roster of enemies 😂
How about xenogears? how you can make a top 10 ps1 game without it is beyond me. "crash racing" lol.
They didn't like it
