- In the last episode of the 1939 Forgotten Hot Rod, Matt got the engine installed into the freshly redone chassis, but we forgot to swap the oil pans! the stock Thunderbird engine does not clear the cross member and the engine is sitting way to high. So today Matt is going to take a step backwards to hopefully move forward. By the end of this episode we hope to hear the $500 Y-Block roar to life! This project is coming together quickly and we cant wait to be able to drive it! Thanks for watching and be sure to subscribe to keep up to date on our builds!!

Hi Matt a couple of comments if I may. You probably don't need the side stabilisers. They are for when the motor is mounted on the center at the front and rear like in the T-Bird. With the wide spaced front mounts and the somewhat wider rear mounts, in my opinion extra side mounts will not be needed. When it was torque rocking as you blipped it the whole frame was rocking, not the motor on it's own. The other thing, is the T-Bird has a spacer behind the water pump. If you can't handle the extra length and want to remove the spacer you will need the matching pulleys and generator brackets off the old motor. just something to look out for.
I'm enjoying the build, keep up the good work. Mart.
Hey Mart, I sorta thought that too. Since the motor is mounted differently it probably doesn't need those extra stabilizers, but was second guessing myself. I think I'll wait to get the car further along as I can always add them even after the car is back together. The water pump thing I also was wondering about, I had it all apart to install the front engine mount bracket and remove the power steering stuff. Thanks for the tips! -Matt/ITG
so nice to see a ford engine in a ford . I love chevys when they are in their place. Putting them in another brand is the easy way out .
Awesome 👍 and I love how it is coming along so quickly
Sweet it come has long way and is going to be one Great Old Ford when done looking forward to the
body coming together.
Sounds great.
Hey Matt could you please do some type of video on the yellow roadster
Could have at least painted the motor.
Very awesome Matt, I was smiling big just like you when it fired up.. for me that never gets old.. I'm excited for you guys and can't wait for the next video..
Thanks Jason, it's a great feeling to bring an old engine to life for the first time! -Matt/ITG
ahh the sound of a y block, best sound in the world :)
You stole Jonathan W's music, shame on you.....j/k. Brought a smile to my face. The first bit of music as you were pulling the engine out.
Always a buzz when your project barks into life for the first time 😎👍👍, cheers from down under 🇦🇺keep em coming
Heck yea! Thanks for watching Adam! -Matt/ITG
Sounds great Y block goodness
how good are those y blocks. best small cube v8 ford made.
RESURRECTION! Saved it baby!
Matt, I see where you responded to one guy you're thinking of running straight pipes. ...please don't. There's nothing sweeter sounding, than a Y-block with glasspacs. Straight pipes are raspy, narly and just plain noisy.
Matt, I agree with this comment. Trust me on this...Y-Blocks do have their own unique "sewing machine sound". Skip Smithy's...go with a set of Walker Continental glasspacks! Ot better yet, an old NOS set of steelpacks. I used the Allen's exhaust Corvette "offroad" mufflers on my 59 Corvette which are accurate replicas of the old GM, dealer supplied steelpack muffers and sound really sweet. Problem with those is, they are only 1.75" in and out. If you can work with that, they are plentiful, relatively inexpensive and last like forever. Thanks for the great viewing and hard work!
Horsepower Monster just came out with this video on building a Y-Block ruclips.net/video/XB_Q9qpvnL0/видео.html
Gear heads all have one thing in common!! The grin from ear to ear when an engine hits!!! Priceless! Great vids!
I know. Even just watching it I was happy!
nice work matt! right on cool videos as always
I would have fixed the oil pan clearance problem with a sledge hammer back in the old days! We didn't have many tools and had to make do with whatever was there. The old Y-block seems to be running smooth. I would love to take the 39 for a spin when it's done.
Thanks Ray, we're hoping to do this car some justice as it's previous version was smashed, cut and a little less refined. It will remain some of it's bumps and bruises but the work I do I'd like to be of a slightly higher standard than when it was originally done. Thanks for watching! -Matt/ITG
Verify you have ample oil to the rockers.
Hey Matt, been watching your builds for a while now, especially your auction video & the '32 Ford Coupe. At least you know what sides up, unlike others in the US who haven't got a damn clue!
Thanks for watching! We're trying to keep the dream alive! -Matt/ITG
For the yblocks you can get all the hippo parts from John Mummert. He specializes in yblocks. Just Google John Mummert yblocks.
Well done.
Its amazing to remember how far these projects have to come.
Check out my latest build #RUSTORATION #PRESSEDBUMPER
In the original side valve Ford trim, the forward thrust of the rear axle was transmitted through the torque tube, to the transmission & the engine, There were two rods that were bolted through the engine bell housing facing to the rear & attached directly to the chassis. These were actually in tension & perform two functions. As the engine was pushed forward in its rubber mounts these rods actually 'pulled; the chassis along with the engine. More importantly they kept the engine in its place, fore & aft. Since the clutch arm is actuated by a horizontal push rod any forward or rearward movement of the engine in its mounts, however small.
With the rods in place the clutch mechanism could work smoothly avoiding the jerky motion caused by the clutch arm moving back & forward as the engine was pushed forward by the axle, torque tube etc. I have seen some pretty nasty clutch shudder as a result of these rods being left out.
What is your plan to address this issue with the Y block engine.
Don't forget to install the the two engine to chassis tie rods .If not it will dance all over the place when you try and reverse, especially backing up an incline. Sweet running Y block too. It may not have done too much work after the donor car was restored .All you need now is a paxton blower ...😎
Watch those T-Bird valve covers Matt. Lol.
I'm surprised you didn't hook up an oil pressure gauge.
Haha yea I had to be real careful lifting the engine alone with those covers!
I love your channel and videos. I've been addicted since finding it. I was wondering why you didn't paint the engine.
Especially since it appears to be Chevy orange.
Hi Steve, I am trying to do a quick build here and even though normally I would tear the engine down and repaint and redo everything it's not in the cards for this one. "Quick" dirty build! Thanks for watching! -Matt/ITG
Always puts a smile on your face when they first fire up doesn't it Matt? Is the reason it rocks so much when you give it some gas because it doesn't have side mounts? Is that what you were talking about at the end of the video? Can't wait to see the body back on the nice frame.. Great job, should fire Andrew up to get busy on his SWEET 16..
Hi Robbie, I think it rocked just because the frame has no weight to it and the torque of the engine is a lot for the few hundred pounds of frame and accessories it's bolted to. Yea he's excited to get back on his, he's just scraping together the cash for a front spring and a trans bell housing and we can make big progress on his project! -Matt/ITG
What did you do with the original engine that came in the 39? Is it able to be used again or is to far gone. I remember you like the carburetor on the old engine
Engine sounds solid Matt now you need to put some new carburation and maybe a little bigger camshaft Nice job !
Yea I am super tempted to swap in a thumper cam! I got a 3x2 intake for the engine at Hershey and I have some fresh 97's on the shelf for it already! We're on the same wavelength haha.
LOVE IT really dig those y blocks
Switch the exhaust manifolds side to side , works every time .
I was wondering if it would have been easier to notch the frame. but looking at it you would have cut into where the front spring mounts.
Correct. Either way the engine had to come out and I already had a modified pan so it was a better solution. Thanks for watching! -Matt/ITG
Cool, man, great fire
Yea I'm pumped! Thanks for watching! -Matt/ITG
Purrs like a kitten! 😃
Hell yea! Thanks for watching! -Matt/ITG
No matter how many times I have done it, firing up an engine for the first time is about as good as it gets. Especially when it's in a vehicle that was once given up on. You most likely know this, but the Chevy style "Ram's horn" exhaust manifolds are found on larger Ford truck with Y-blocks in them. Do you have the correct air cleaner for the percolator Holley?
Hi Chuck, I'm looking for a set of those manifolds now. Hopefully have a lead on a set locally so I can get the exhaust all built with the body off. Hoping to get all that done by the end of the month if all goes well! -Matt/ITG
The yellow gum spark plug wires are making my ocd flare up. Lol god please put some solid core black or clear red 1950s style edelbrock ones on😛😛😛😛
Soon soon!
diggin the rusty jones waste basket @ 3:45.
Sounds good 👍👍
Glad you were able to find a good Ford motor to put in
At 1:17 sounds like a Jonathan W video.
Nothing like him. This guy knows how to build hot rods, Jonathan W hasn't got an effing clue!
I was talking about the theme music playing there. It is the same music he uses.
@@myredute you must be one hell of a hot rod guy your self to have such a opinion.
@@RustyIronProjectsRIP hes kinda right. jonathan w is...alright, but he does alot of things that rub me the wrong way.
@@RustyIronProjectsRIP If I haven't got the experience & know how at 69,after running my own business for 42 years & building multiple show winners,I never will. What are your credentials big mouth?
Nice work guys. I am not a Ford guy but I am really enjoying watching this car come along. Going to be a kick a$$ car when done.
Thanks for watching Chris! If it's old, it's cool, no matter the brand in my opinion, so I'm right there with ya!
Very, Cool!☝️😎👍☝️
Love the sound of a V8. Open exhaust mans or not. Still sounds fantastic.
I just noticed you have a "Rusty Jones" rolling trash can. Hello Rusty Jones, good bye rusty car.
I love that old can! -Matt/ITG
yellow plug wires again!
Always encouraging to hear the engine run. The transverse springs give it a healthy rock and so when you pull up to the drive in, caps on the root beer or wet britches. Course it will change a lot when the weight of the car is added... good job
Thanks for watching Morgan! -Matt/ITG
Aqui do Brasil acompanhar o canal.
sounds good matt .. I like to use di-electric grease on points they don't corrode that way
Great tip! -Matt/ITG
Double Awesome
Thanks for watching Richard! -Matt/ITG
IronTrap Garage
Hey, thank you for the Videos.
Love the - Keeping it real.
The things that go right and wrong. It’s how it goes for everyone. Sometimes we think it’s just us when thing don’t go right way.
Sounds good
Verry awesome
nice work
Awesome!
Can't wait to see if those center dump ram headers will clear the steering box.
I believe they will. It's just sneaking the downpipe around it!
Wealth of information, awesome project.
Nice sound ! How to get that sound after I install the v-8 in my 31 ???
Nice to see this next project coming along
Thanks for watching Craig and nice to see you at Hershey! -Matt/ITG
Nothing like the sound of an old Ford motor ( yes I said motor) God only knows how many of those I have torn apart and rebuilt or souped up, Freddie out !
Very fun Matt!! This project has been great to see...looking forward to the next steps.
Always leave a couple bolts in at 2:39 to prevent that from happening...
Be sure to show us the "center dumps"...
Sweet runner there .
Thanks for watching!
Awesome start!
I always keep a big bag of kitty litter around for those oil pan accidents lol.
Shoulda coulda drained the oil before removing the pan!
Sounds great - looking forward to see it driving! :-D
Sounds like a y-block (tractor), enemic
Yefkn ha sounds like a tractor motor, nice
Weirdest carb ever!
Teapot carb! Odd and often discarded! -Matt/ITG
Bud, she's sounds good, are you going to plumb the exhaust before you guys put the body back on? What mufflers are you going to use? GLASS PACKS Maybe?
Hi Leonard, Yea I'm hoping to plumb the exhaust with the body off, just need to get some time to use my buddy's exhaust bender to make it all up. Hopefully get to that in the next week or two! -Matt/ITG
Kickass ! So stoked for this build.
FUCK SPEEDWAY
Hahahha
Great luck on that engine!! Sounds like it runs well. You can ditch tha belt fan and replace it with a spal electric unit. Still waiting to see the firewall fixit video, there's where the real work will be!
I try and keep the builds I do "traditional" using all "old" parts, so modern things like electric fans and power steering, etc won't be used. I like the challenge of making it all look and work like they did "back in the day". I can't wait to get that firewall all tuned up too, but that's after the floor pan project! Thanks for watching. -Matt/ITG
That was awesome!
Hell yea! Thanks for watching! -Matt/ITG
Nice Matt what are you going to do with that Ford ,
Matt that car is becoming awesome. Is there a temptation to go more than a basic driver? My guess is you are going to give in and make it unique and really sweet ( hmmm like the Free Tee) lol. In any regard I will be watching your progress.
Hi Jack, This project is just staying as a "driver" for now. Just getting it together with the old paint and bumps and bruises. I have too many other long-term projects I need to get back on to! -Matt/ITG
Motor is sweet good job lot of stuff for one guy to get together nice work . Yep Hoya Hoya Gramps on the couch my 39 ???
Thanks for watching Tom!
Congrats on getting the engine in the ‘39 and running. It was great to meet you at Hershey and thanks for pushing us to get there. It’s been a long time desire of mine and for my first Hershey Fall Meet it was fantastic. I found a few treasures to bring home and will be back next year.
Hey Bob, thanks for coming out and saying hello! I'm glad the videos helped push you to make the trip! Cya next year! -Matt/ITG
A T-Bird engine with only a 2 barrel carb! Blasphemy!
dvs1145 that is a 4 barrel “tea pot” Holley carburetor.
That y block sounds ready to fly, looking forward to the rest of the build
Keep up the great work itg crew
Rick B aka Plastic butcher
Thanks Rick, I can't wait to drive it! -Matt/ITG
good ole rusty jones :)
Fired right up without even a valve tap. Nice!
I couldn't believe it! Thanks for watching. -Matt/ITG
That Y block sounds great. Loved watching it rock the chassis with the slightest throttle. Can't wait to see this one come together, it's going to be sweet. Also, tell the kid to get his rear in gear and get some work done on the sweet 16. lol
He's just waiting on a couple parts and we can get some big progress on his car! -Matt/ITG
Just love how it rocks in the frame when you rev it
When you put shocks on it that will go away a little maybe
Got to love having the hoist on an over head rail how good is that 👍👍
Yea there's no wait on the car so it will move it like that. No biggie!
That is exciting to see good deal.
Thanks for watching! -Matt/ITG
Congrats Matt
I could not believe that the engine started so easy that was awesome.
Me either! Thanks for watching! -Matt/ITG
Its great to hear it running matt! Top shelf guys. 👍
Thanks for watching! -Matt/ITG
Good stuff. Sounds great. Snowman
Thanks Jim! -Matt/ITG
is someone frying bacon or was it raining?
Rain bacon! Nah just a heavy rain hit just as we were starting to film! -Matt/ITG
Can't wait to see the progress on this.
Thanks David! -Matt/ITG
That engine sounds mean. Great job
Thanks Russ! I'm excited! -Matt/ITG
It's very big engine why u don't use 4 cylinders simple and it's better with gasoline
Start at Ep. 1 and you'll find out why this is being done.
Dude! Like, you miss the whole point! It;s not a Fiat!
No budy in the world using v 8 engines now every people thinking of economy now
I see your not into Hot Rodding. Google that and learn a little about it.
