THIS VIDEO SHOWS THE INSIDE OF THE SILVER SPADE. THE MAN WITH THE CAMERA IS STANDING NEXT TO THE ELEVATOR. THE ELEVATOR LOOKS LIKE IT IS TURNING WHEN IN FACT THE DECK AND MACHINERY ARE MOVING.
The beginning is got to be probably one of the best optical illusions ever with the silver Spades Central elevator looking like it's moving when in fact it's the superstructure that's spinning I love that I love that
To answer the question about moving the machine...that was handled by a guy at ground level. The operator was only in control of the digging operations. Something not apparent in this film is the noise level inside the machine, it was very, very loud. Part of my job was getting the guys working in the 'house' (they were known as upstairs oilers) to wear hearing protection. They were afraid they wouldn't be able to hear something going wrong if they wore headsets.
Sometime in the 60s I go to go inside the similar machine working for Peabody Coal near Pittsburgh, Kansas. We rode the elevator up the swing shaft. The thing nearly had a kitchen and lounge in it. Huge treat for an 8 year old kid. What wonderful times to be an American those were! We had industry and we were growing! People had good jobs and we enjoyed life.
I believe the elevator is stationary, & the machinery deck is rotating (about the elevator), but it appears the opposite (that the elevator is rotating & the machinery deck is stationary). Relative motion can be illusory, depending on the reference frame of the viewer.
This is one of the most amazing videos from inside a power shovel I have ever seen. I remember riding the elevator on the Marion 5960 before. Great video as always!!!!!
Inside that cable is very high voltage but, the current isn't as high as you'd think. That's why it can be small. Inside the Spade are transformers and motor generators to step down the voltage for all the motors and stuff inside.
Its mind bending size and complexity makes one contemplate if it was possible that this tremendous machine had some sense of its existence in the cosmos! J.Verne
It seems that the mass of a mining shovel doesn't scale up at the same rate. I'm seeing a giant mining shovel where there's a lot of mass high up and that must limit the bucket size that's on the end of a long dipper. I noticed there is a power limit on how big a bite the operator can take with that big bucket, as well. If that thing had full power to the bucket on the end of that long arm and took a big bite, it might pull the Silver Spade over!
do people actually work inside these machines while they're in use digging and swiveling back and forth? also what is the purpose of the dainty little ding bell in the operator's cab it just seems out of place there should be an extreamly loud air horn or something.
That's what happens when idiots don't take care of the machine enough to wear if it was given the chance to be preserved it ends up breaking down before it can be preserved
May be a stupid question but why stand against those enormous tracks whilst it’s been operated !!!! Does the operator sound a pre warn before he starts to move the machine.. I’ve never had the opportunity to see something like this working so I’m puzzled Thank you
Massive!😃 Huge....so neat but I have seen freak accident's. They happen all the time. I can't believe those men are standing up under that monster...... anything could go wrong
Hi bennette shovel, Great video's BTW! I just wondered what the idea of the swivelling lift was? If anyone can answer whom has already commented below I would be much obliged, thanks you. Take care mrbluenun
@@blockstacker5614 I think you were the first person to answer a question out of all my postings. Certainly the oldest question. Pretty rare these days indeed. Thank you.

I really like this video because at ground level you can see how much dirt is moved with one pass. Great job!

its amazing that that tiny cable out the back powers the whole machine

Really great video. I'll miss the Spade and the Gem of Egypt.
Finely ! The inside of the spade! It is the best! You make all us gearheads Happy! Thanks! REDDOG
If I win the powerball or mega millions, I would have this machine rebuilt
Agreed
Rip mr Bennett
Fantastic vid.
Would love to have seen inside one of these machines when it was working.
All of that mass, machinery, support for one (in comparison) little bucket. Cool.
Exactly what I was thinking. The unbelievable size of this machine seems like little payback, like the bucket could easily be five times bigger.
@@jesseerickson662 too funny. I'm guessing if we stood next to it, it would be huge. But yea, great analogy "Little payback". Spot on.

this is what I was looking for, just awesome
The ironic thing is when you see that bar going around with the guy and camera (it's not moving) we are .
Awesome video...
what was the lag time... from hand control to actual machine response?
Small machine but nice video.
I wonder why bucyrus-erie decided to add an elevator to the spade and brutus. like why not just have steps
They have to bring up big drums of grease and what not.
Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance. Yes, this is a joke.

awesome video. Can't believe that the spade was destroyed :-(

Yes, he does sound an alarm. The thing moved so slow anyway you had time to get out of the way.

So its the cousin of the nasa crawler ..
Inside the machine it looks like a warehouse with all the equipment necessities to keep it running.
Hi bennette shovel,
Great video's BTW! I just wondered what the idea of the swivelling lift was? If anyone can answer whom has already commented below I would be much obliged, thanks you.
Take care
mrbluenun
mrbluenun it was not the lift swivelling, it was stationary, everything around it was moving.
Silly question time. Where did the elevator go ?
the first floor
@@blockstacker5614 Thank you.
its so neat when you reply a 7 year old comment and they respond

Just a tremendous look into the inside of one of these giants.Great view from the cabThe ground level view really puts the size into perspective

What ended her life, seen pictures of a damaged slew roller train..??
Yes it was exactly that- too expensive to sort I suppose!
Fueling...???
I believe it’s electric ran bud.
I’m not 100% sure. But I do believe these types of machines run on electricity.
