I know that area well, in fact I used to live on Mountcastle Road twenty-five years ago and Hopefield up to the age of five. My parents bought their house on Hopefield in 1963 and there were hardly any cars around in those days. I thought you were going to mention the end property on Marlow, the one with the bungalow that's for sale because that would have been a good example showing the length of the gardens. Furthermore, the end house (the one that has the bungalow at the bottom of its garden) is also interesting as it's three story and, when the train line was still operational' would have been very close to the tracks. I've always wondered if that particular property was something g to do with the railway itself. I currently live on Ashleigh Road. You should do a tour of the Westcotes area because there are some amazing properties and it's steeped in history.
Hi there, amazing comment, thank you! Yeah it has all changed a lot round there I bet over the last 50-60 years!!! At 5:10 in the video I do mention that house and the bungalow actually! Great minds think alike!!! And yeah, I’d not really thought about how close the train line would be……very close like you say. Westcotes is amazing, I love it!!! Actually got married in a church in the Westcotes area. There’s loads of history like you say, will certainly make sure I head down over the next few weeks. Thanks so much for watching and commenting, it means a lot. ❤❤
@@leicesterliving the three large houses at the top end of Westcotes Drive are very interesting. The one on the left is now a nursing home and the one opposite I believe is a Conservative Club. Both houses were originally occupied by brothers and built by their father who lived in the large house setback on the lefthand side of Westcotes Drive between Fosse Rd and Sykefield Avenue. It's now something to do with the NHS I believe. I got this information from an elderly man coming out of the Conservative Club as I've always been interested in these houses and though he might know something of their history. Also, did you know there's an exhibition at Newark House museum about the history of Narborough Road. I really must get along to that as I remember it in its hayday when there were lots of independent shops and at most only a couple of barbers - if you get what I mean!.
I live in this area and trust me a good 90% of them need work also you went to the nice end 👀 the heart of the area is awful, lovely properties that haven't been maintained properly and the types of people that live in them don't look after them
You’re certainly right mate that Mountcastle, Hopefield, Wolverton is generally seen as “the better end” of the area. I’ll get down Equity, Gaul, Roman Road over next few weeks when I’m doing some viewings or valuations down there. Thanks so much for the comment!
@@leicesterliving I'm over the westend way, there's such a mix, westcotes drive have some lovely houses but on the fosse road side most the houses are now flats or shared housing
I grew up in Leicester. The place is a total shithole these days. Everytime I go back to visit my father the place seems more desperate with more destitution and vacant shops. My father lives in a "nice" part of town and his house has been broken into multiple times in the past 10 years, same as both his neighbours. I've personally been attacked and had attempted muggings along with many of my friends who have also all since left. I believe it also has among the lowest average earnings in the UK and supposidly has a huge problem with child grooming gangs. Same as many other parts of the country these says you may say. What a depressing thought...
Hi George. Really interesting comment. Certainly sounds like you’ve had some bad experiences! I’m fortunate to have never had any of the issues you mention above and I live in a fairly OK part of town. I certainly think if you have moved away in the last 10 years or more then when you come to visit the city will be totally different to what you remember, certainly close to the city. A lot of the suburbs remain nice places to live in my opinion and property prices have certainly held up very well. Can’t comment on the average earnings, never looked into it to be honest, maybe I should! All interesting stuff.
Born and bred in. Leicester but. Ow its the pits it used to be thriveing city with hosiery and shoe industry them days are lon g gone crime raye sky high police dont care and do nothing its depressing to be homrst
@@leicesterliving I imagine that's becoming more challenging with each passing day. Wandering Turnip is an interesting channel too. Similar in some respects to TurdTowns but he delves into the history of our great towns and cities. In fact Leicester would make a great episode given our industrial heritage.
@@gmc9451 I’ve watched quite a lot of the Wandering Turnip. Really, really interesting!!! Would love to do something with him! His videos are a bit more polished than mine….🤣🤣 I fit this in around my work as an estate agent, just when I’m out and about.
Some of it is very dated, I get that. Terraced areas, lots of people in a small area, on a pretty grey day….not ideal for filming I guess. But there’s a huge mix of characters, some great people, and some really interesting houses in this area.
Nice to see someone taking an interest in the historical fabric of my hometown. Cheers!
I love the history of Leicester, I need to do more stuff like this really......
