Love these guys. I became a Chicago Bears fan in the late 70s watching them. Good to see them again.
Two great Bears with a thoughtful perspective. They both belong in the hall of fame!!
Life long Bears fan going back to 1965. I have great admiration for Fencik and Plank. They were human missles on the football field, I know Doug has had a harder time of it but I’m glad they are still with us. Prayers to both of them to have long lives without minimal complications from their football careers.
These 2 guys are what a Chicago bear is suppose to be, enjoyed watching these 2 play👍

My wife got to meet Gary Fencik at her workplace a few years ago and I was pretty pissed that she didn’t call me so I could get down there and shake his hand.
I’ve met the great Walter Payton, but these 2 guys were the real shit!! As bad ass as they come!

I still feel injures from high school football 35 years later. Can't even imagine what these guys must feel like everyday!!!!
Played football and hockey and yes at 66 when I get up and move around it’s like somebody is shaking a jar full of nickels. Somewhere something in my body is screaming WTF. I worry about concussions because in both sports I did get my bell rung and as they say back then it was follow my finger and take a snort of the salt and get your ass back out there.
BIg Vikings fan here, but such respect for these Bears Safeties. The game has changed so much today. These guys were big hitters and played through so many injuries. As for today's players - - well, you have to have a brain first before you can get a concussion.

I only made it as far as high school, but everytime I got hit, I remember telling myself, "I love this game, but do I really want this?" Meaning the pain and headaches. Geez
I remember watching them play. There would be a pyle up and the runners momentum would stop or slow and then all of a sudden someone would come flying into the scrum and knock the whole pyle over. It was always Plank or Fencik.

Remember the Doug Plant hit on the great Tampa Bay Buccaneer tight end Jimmie Giles? That was on Monday Night Football in 1980.
He had no fear. If he did, he never showed it. Fencik and Plank were well known in those days.
Just two great men, that's all.
I played in the era of the helmet was a weapon. I wasn’t big but I could defeat bigger players by using my helmet as a warhead. Only years after my career did the advent of the MRI show the damage to my brain. I’m a coach and players might be bigger, stronger, etc., but the hitting then and now is starkly different.
It’s all part of the game you need from day one you couldn’t get hurt, but you take the risk I took the risk and looking back I would never change that because once the game is gone, you spend the rest of your life wanting to play once again
I played 2 years in high school and countless games of tackle without equipment with friends as a teenager. I'm 62 years old now and virtually every morning I wake up with new aches and pains. I can't imagine what guys that played pro for 10 or more years on top of college feel like.
Had two concussions playing HS football in the same week. Both times, the lights went out and my whole body went numb for a few moments. Back in the day when you “got your bell rung” - the mid 70’s - the coach would tell you to sit out a couple reps in practice and once you weren’t dizzy when you stood up you were back on the field. After that season, I was done with football.
You two dudes still scare me to this day,as a high school coach,my kids know both of your names,and I will be showing this video to them,it happened to me repeatedly,and I stopped playing after high school!! My kids mean everything to me,and I WILL protect them from themselves!! Thank you for this important message!!!
Loved watching these guys play as a kid. When he left to the Blitz I was bummed.

Loved watching you guys hit hard! I’m glad that you and others are trying to raise more awareness for CTE. But man it was so fun to watch with those extra big shoulder pads! I feel like the QB’s are so babied now and hitting with shoulder., what’s next flag football!

These 2 epitomized intelligence, reckless abandon, game-changing hits, & near-perfection on open-field tackling! They were average or slightly below average in size & speed compared to other NFL players at the safety position who made up the difference with heart, intelligence, & determination! Buddy Ryan's defensive schemes aren't nearly as effective without being able to depend on both as the last line of defense! Plank had every kid in my Chicago neighborhood trying to emulate his hits on grammar school & high school football fields!
Its sad looking at Garys big ring and Doug doesnt have one. He should have got one in the mail even if he left the year it happened.
Plank was the 46 in the 46 defense. He was a small guy who basically played linebacker.

Two of a kind, two of the greatest hitters not only of the Chicago Bears, but in NFL history. I so much wish one of these guys had run for Chicago mayor or Illinois Governor - we need nice, tough, no nonsense MEN to take back our City, State. I'm sure they would get elected by all racial and ethnic voters in Chicago.

Duo of doom. There have been other really good safety pairings, but these two were unmatched. Smith and Atwater probably the most close, but still not as vicious as these two
How about Atkinson and Tatum?
With all the money the NFL has, why don't they open up their own hospital, staff it, and take care of these guys if they need it. It's like sending these guys out to slaughter every game.

If Brady had to play in the 80s he probably would not have any rings. Dave and Gary and Doug and their likes on other teams, such as Atwater and "who was that guy played for SF?" would give the receivers alligator arms, and give Brady nightmares, just like they did everyone else. NO QB can throw on their back, and somebody has to catch the ball. "In the grasp" and "tuck rule" didn't exist.

One guy is a long time player and multiple Pro Bowler.
They weren’t cheap shot artists. The game was played differently then. Safety position is more about positioning than speed Kid and these guys were great at the angles. Safety’s aren’t supposed to be getting in foot races. They’re supposed to be in position to stop a long gain. You’re showing your youth and ignorance by trying to compare eras.
