- A couple of days ago we dragged home my 1971 Chevy Nova. I've had this car for years and it's time she gets a little maintenance. First things first we have to row though the gears and hear the big block roar!

You’re a cool person who has a great lady in his life. I’m the former owner of a 57 hardtop. Your restoration really brought back the memory’s. I’m 75years old Andi had a red 57 hardtop and I have a story to tell. I was at the outdoor movies with my 15 year old girlfriend. I was16 and had my drivers license for 3weeks. On Nov23 1964 I took my honey to the outdoor movies. I was a virgin and so was Nancy. We both lost our virginity and conceived our first kid ALL in one shot. What a night…gotta love 57 hardtops🎉🎉🎉😂😂😂
At least the Nova has a rad cap so basically its mint

I like the idea of driving it while you fix it up. That's how most of us have to do it.

As a big block 4 speed Nova owner myself, this is the car that got me into this channel. Glad to it's staying.
Do ya have thick skin though, as much as you complain about the internet just doesn't seem like it. Maybe medium skin.

Had to laugh when Dan grabbed the dash and said it has a rattle that he needs to fix. This is actually the only car he owns the sound like the scrap guy going down the road 😂
It’s good to see a smile on your face while you’re driving! Definitely use the engine from the Camaro, but sell the transmission and get a 5-Speed like your SO MADD Nomad. Then you’ll have exactly the transmission you love in your Nova!! Forget the purists and the haters!! It’s your baby, you deserve to build it the way you want it!!

Funny you mentioned the ol’ school DDSS sticker logo. I like that and think you should incorporate that logo on a shirt.

Love the Nova. My first car was a 70. I kick myself every time I see 1 for letting it go but I’ll get another 1 sooner or later. 👍🏼 on the small block & 4 speed. Big blocks are cool if they’re screamers but the small block will do everything you want & more. Keep up the great work
SS Nova is getting to be a rare car. Nice lines with a rowdy small block with a 4-slinger sounds like a lot of fun. Good choice
I'm 6'5 300#, these lil guys don't understand what it's like not to fit in your car comfortably. The Nova is going to be amazing!
I'm only '6 175# and I totally understand. I have a small back issue. And if it's not comfortable I'm done . It definitely take the fun out of it. 👍🏻.

1972... I had friends (twins) each with Nova SS's. Not sure the year... 1969 if I recall correctly. Both 350's, both 4-speeds. So much fun. I am looking forward to this content... Memories.

Badass! It's meant to be lol! Yrs ago I bought my 1st nova and around that time your nova was sorta on the channel. Unfortunately sold it, but now I've acquired another and Ole Dan here brings his back out! On top my newly acquired is also a 71. NOW WE JUST NEED SOME DD SPEED SHOP MERCH!!!
Yes Keep the Nova!! Work on it on weekends like everyone else does and drive during the week. If you road trip it put a Gear-Bender in it. My 73 is primered I usually part it in the back parking at our weekly car shows and thiers always a few people around it checking it out
I have 2 a 70 RS and my 73 driver plus a 71 parts car
Love the show and like the Nova. My love of the show way outweighs my personal preference in cars. Bottom line you prefer keeping the Nova for great reasons. Fits you better and Mur bought for you. No Brainer your doing exactly what you need to do.
One request. If possible, before you dismantle the drive line on the Camaro if its far enough together, take us Camaro fans along on a little drive like you did with the Nova. It would be fun

Keep doing what you are doing. Love the Nova. If you are looking to move up a decade, nothing wrong with a 65 Malibu or 64 442. Ok, 65 Galaxy is ok too.

All the cool guys drove Nova SS's with 396 4 spd.when I was in HS. While I had to make do with my '63 Impala 283 with a 3 spd on the floor. At least I had a Hurst shifter. LOL
It would be hilarious to watch you do a "restoration". I think you would implode! I can just picture you at the Nova Concourse events discussing proper factory over-spray and spring paint marks.
Some great choices for your sentimental car and the end results will be pure enjoyment for the future Dan.
One of my all time favorite cars ever made, there would be no way that I could ever sell it, that car is very rare around where I live unless people have them stored up, great move on not selling it! It would have been a big regret👍

You're spot on with the plan Dan! I tossed out all of my old clothes that didn't comfortably fit and cars are pretty much the same. If they don't fit, you won't enjoy it. The killer driveline needs to go in the nice car that you've made history with. Great plan!

I hope you make it nice. That car is special because your father gifted it to you. I didn’t get a lot from my father but the things I did get when he passed, well I still have everything. I am actually going to start pecking away on my personal cars again. They need some work and the restorations are showing their age since I drive all mine every summer. Then since nothing has failed lately on them and the shop is busy fixing cars, I decided to start some body and paint repairs on my cars or it was never going to happen. You can do that as well, one issue at a time. My problem is that my cars have custom paint and I want to keep them as they are, or as much as possible to how I shot the car. Might do some ghost low rider type of repair since there is no possible way to accurately match the paint and pearl. If you kept yours one standard color you could cherry that Nova out shooting parts at a time as you make them nice.

Lol ! He's not "giving us an option" , Dani . He's teasing responses . Fans know better . Yup , I came home after work to one of those "tire fell off" scenarios . Had to use 2 jacks to put it back on for them , & a hammer to straighten out a leaning stud , just to get the tire back on it . Front driver's side , so I'm an easy target for inattentive drivers , & raining . It's a good thing the rim was aluminum , so the threads were just full of that , instead of non-existent . New bad sounds ? No worries , just keep driving it , someone else will figure it out for ya . Clue-less .
To save your thumb from being punctured by the throttle spring, when you have a holley, just push down on the accelerator pump lever a couple of times.
Found a 71 nova, hasnt moved since 1989, found under a tree. Has the 4speed not a ss, but has V8. Not locked up, dont run. Would love to see your project/ restoration

I have a 76 C20 with 375hp 350 and Munsie 4 speed. It kept falling out of 3rd gear. Found a broken detent spring. Replaced it and works great now. Can’t wait to see the build on the Nova.

I was in Vietnamese in 71, my dodge demon was a 71, if that nova was mine it would be a no brained! I had some friends in the Air Force who had 70s novas s.s. 396ers. Get rid of that Camaro build the nova. Tunnel ram big block 4 speed, 9” rear end. That would make a killer gasser!
Transplant the small block , transmission and rear end . TLC and enjoy it . Damn nice Nova SS .

Dont remove the roll bar. I have had around 10 Nova over the years. It make the car so much more solid. Just put a kicked back cross bar so you fit. You will be happy you did:))

I understand completely and you’re making the right decision by far skipping on the Camaro. I have a Mustang which suffers the same issue that I’ve modified extensively to fit in and it still is difficult to get in and out of because of the roof line. It makes me miserable but I’m too far in now-like way too far. I just kept convincing myself I could mod it to work and now I’m sort of stuck with it for the meantime because it’s grown sentimental value over the years. Never would’ve started on it had I just accepted and realized it’s just wasn’t going to work without it being a convertible or something.
Hey Dan, Love your Videos, do the Nova Right a Factory SS is Worth the Work. I had a 1970 SS it also had a 12 bolt 308 gear I went with a 373 worked great all purpose.

Someone asked yesterday to name five of the best internet cars. One of them happen to be DD speed shop 71 nova SS. Man, i love this car.
I had a 69 nova after high school in 1993 same color and vynal top as your ss 71 miss mine till this day too of coarse stupid mistake traded it in on an Isuzu spacecab truck for 16 grand like an idiot they only gave this high school kid 600$ trade for a mint 250 straight 6 with the powerrlglide 2 speed trans in it 😭🤧but who knows maybe find one again one day an give to my son for grad present later on! Well love the ch an God bless ya both 2 !!
I have a 3:08 gear in my big block 71 Nova and if you’re going to drive it on the street, I think it’s a good gear. However if you install a Tremec, a 4:11 would be fun.

Best decision I’ve seen you make. The car is solid, pretty nice, means something to you, a keeper, and the Camaro is a pig. My opinion.

Ima be back in ny this month sadly... but i have a 68ish international scout. Looks bad but so solid the floors hold water like a fish bowl .. i think thats a good sign .. v8 auto just needs a rear i have and the front end needs to be properly mounted .. its been badly modified.. it was a free vehicle the rear cost me 200 i got a pair.. i drove 10 hours to get this thing for free.. and fell to sleep in traffic.. but no worries it was a traffic jam ..
Just cant wait to work on this project. Allso have a 60s all aluminium kurb van waiting in ny.. so some fun this summer ahead..
I allsi got a 76 Corvette for free this winter in florida .. so i have projects all over the place. Im a sucker for free .. love to save this stuff from part outs and scrap yards. At 55 i have projects into my 60s and 70s.. 😂

Here’s my vision.
Drivetrain of your choice. Yes to the vinyl top. Paint the entire car butternut including the hood. Black Z28 stripes. DD speed show on side of the cowl hood in black, but reduce the lettering size so it fits on the side of the cowl.Interior new headliner, sail panels and package tray. Paint the roll bar satin black so it doesn’t stick out like a sore thumb. Wheels of your choice. This car deserves a higher quality build.
