Thank you for this lovely rendering of a great Welsh composition by a great Welsh tenor. Stuart taught my brother Colin in Bargoed circa 1955. We both admired Stuart and some years later Colin followed him into the Welsh National Opera. I have a Novello album on iTunes. My friend Gareth lived near Ivor's birthplace in Cathedral Rd Cardiff.
Great memories of Burrows and his delicate touch...strange that Mozart isn't mentioned above as I thought he was mainly thought of as a Mozart tenor....
My dearest dear, If I could say to you In words as clear As when I play to you, You'd understand How slight the shadow that is holding us apart. So take my hand, I'll lead the way for you. A little waiting and you'll reach my heart. Your lonely hours will spread their wings and fly; The passing show'rs will only pass you by. If you can trust me, trust the secret in my song. When love is true The road is never long. My dearest dear, If I could say to you In words as clear As when I play to you, You'd understand How slight the shadow that is holding us apart. So take my hand, I'll lead the way for you. A little waiting and you'll reach my heart.
This is my very first time to hear of Ivor Novello's music. This song is beautiful and very touching. Mr. Stuart sings it beautifully. Thank you for sharing.
I too sing this song it is often requested by older people in an audience. Could listen to Stuart for hour's singing Ivor Novello. By listening also teaches me correct phrasing. Thank you
I am familiar with the wonderful show songs of Ivor Novello from my earliest years. My mother loved them, she sung them in lessons with Joan Clarkson, who was also my piano teacher. They are constructed so well, and are also so romantic, and so sensitive. From my study it appears they were written for the soprano voice, and that Stuart can sing them so well shows how gifted he is.
Hello. This is by far the best recording of this song I can find anywhere. Would you have any objection to my playing it for educational purposes at a lecture on Ivor Novello? Thanks
I never heard of Stuart Burrows until I came across this song. It is a beautiful song and beautifully sang by Mr. Burrows. Ivor Novello wrote many beautiful music that warm many hearts. One of my favorites “We’ll Gather Lilacs ....” .
Wonderful Stuart Burrows , a heavenly voice and a fine human being.
I'd forgotten just how good he is. In his time Britain's finest tenor I think.
Certainly - heard him many times at Covent Garden and he was the finest Mozart tenor since Tauber.
Songs were so beautiful back then
My late dad's favourite. Someone used to sing this in his local pub beautifully and it brings back happy memories.
❤ what can i say what a gentleman met stuart many years ago fab
Ivor Novello was over the top but brilliant all the same and Stuart Burrows preserves the memory.
I am really enjoying "discovering" the lovely melodies of Ivor Novello. My fav is "The land of might have been".
Wales has produced many fine singers over the years but none finer than this magnificent tenor. Diolch yn fawr, dyn annwyl!
Just wonderful.... What a voice....
I adore Ivor's songs and I love Stuart's rendition. I wish someone would sing this to me. Lucky Lady.

Dina, go to Andy Wilson - Harry Secombe sings all of Ivor Novello's songs. Romance doesn't begin to describe it.
Stunning!

The tune remind me of Rachmaninov’s song “Zdes Khorosho”.
