How about we change these terms towards the “poor and marginalized.” And start using terms that compel these very individuals to recognize their self-worth. I can’t help but associate these frequently used terms with communities that have dwelled in privilege, thus not knowing the psychological affect it may have on the very communities that one is claiming to help. As social workers, you can do better. Empower and eliminate rhetorics that only deter others.

One of the ironies is that a social justice discussion has a presenter that felt that the mic was not needed. The hard of hearing people always prefer the use of the mic and its the only way for the closed captioning to capture the words.

She seemed out of touch with reality. I noted too many things that were said that could have been worded A HELL OF A LOT BETTER! She needs to revisit her SW courses.

Social justice is lifting people out of POVERTY.

Social justice won’t work unless you start from the ground up. That is working with the individuals that are at risk and they are suffering from poverty, being uneducated and victims of social injustice. If you can educate the individual and help them become self-reliant then they can conquer. Public policy will elevate them thereafter.

When it comes to poverty and homelessness you have got to EMPHASIZE on SELF RELIANCE.

25:30 that’s called the American dream whom actually everybody is entitled to including those disadvantaged.

  • @american236

29:09 well given the fact that 90% of people who are in poverty don’t have an education it’s true they don’t know so we educate them why don’t we help them help themselves? That’s how they can truly succeed.

I don’t agree with the lecture trying to blame it on society and capitalism because if I have mine and I’m good how can I help somebody else get theirs?
The goal is to help people who are disadvantaged like homelessness at risk youth how can I help them help themselves to get their piece of the pie? Without relying on policies or playing the blame game or acting like a victim because just like all the rest of us are productive members of society and we have our needs met we want to help those that are disadvantage get that same piece of the pie enjoy those same benefits. Goal to not look at those that are disadvantage less than or uncapable.

30:46 that’s different because the school board works for the people and it’s paid by taxpayers not just giving away free money to businesses and local people huge huge difference.

25:49 actually it does because it’s called the American dream you can come to America with nothing or you can live in America and be in America and have nothing and have the opportunity to have everything so yes it does take the poor and marginalize into account it just doesn’t give them a hand out though it kind of actually does because America has social programs not social justice but social programs but those social programs are not meant to exalt the poor and marginalized it’s supposed to be a helping hand but it’s up to the individual to be exalted in the American dream.

29:50 sounds like a perfect way to GREED and theft. Anyone can easily make a grant and give it to a relative and embezzle the money. Also no way to make them give the money to those in poverty and disadvantaged either.

  • @american236

32:44 Well duh you didn’t give them money away to just homeless people sitting on the street you gave it away to people who have a small businesses know how to manage money huge difference.

26:25 exactly everybody has an opportunity to get a leg up in America go to Mexico go to Iraq go to Afghanistan go to places in Africa go to some poor countries and there are no opportunities like America very little very few in America you can be homeless and poor and become a multi millionaire I was homeless before for six months I pulled my self up I pulled my leg up so I got a leg up I started a business anybody can start a business I was not born with a leg up I was not born with the same as Account # I was not born with with rich parents or even middle-class parents I was a child to a single mom who is addicted to drugs and I suffered for a while in and out of foster cares but at the age of 25 I decided to get my life together and open my business and now I don’t struggle anymore now I don’t live below the poverty line now I live a middle to upper middle class lifestyle

28:15 You must believe that because you don’t believe that they can lift themselves a battle poverty you think they need a hand out so you think they’re too stupid to get an education and you think they are too lazy to get a job so therefore you have to give them a hand out you discredit their ability to be self-reliant.

So .the Govt. should stop financing non profit organizations and give money directly to people in need? ... they know best what they need....or would that put Social workers out of work?

31:36 I can walk down the street right now and find a bunch of homeless bums that don’t want to work because people like you like to give away free money all the time. I’m not even gonna blame all on you it’s all about self-accountability and self-reliance.
