One has to die because of the very thing established about the title of Kenpachi: the next one must kill the current one. And that’s not even touching Unohana’s own story. This is just the way they operate. One has to die because there’s no other way for a battle like theirs to end.
I dont even think thats true. Since Kenny never beat her, he never became Kenpachi, and she never lost the title so the idea of all Kenpachis killing the previous isnt even real since technically its only been her than him. She could have just passed the title down after losing, then dropped the Yachiru name becoming Retsu again.
Unohana was still the true Kenpachi until Zaraki killed her. All the other kenpachis after her are just named for the sake of tradition because they were Squad 11 captains.
The tittle of Kenpachi is given to whom kills the previous Captain of the 11th Division. Unohana was the First Captain of that Division. So, by her still been alive, Zaraki can never be a TRUE Kenpachi. She HAS to die by his hand to become a Kenpachi.
Which isn't necessary tbh especially when there is a war going on. They can go all out but could still have a healer nearby to heal if one of them is close to death

And there she is, my Number ONE favorite character in the whole series I mentioned before that I got into Bleach out of order, starting with Cour 1 after it ended, but Unohana's battle was THE deciding factor in whether I'd sink my teeth into the series or not...which I did! Man, I am so happy you get to watch your reaction to all the lore and details explained this episode. And I look forward to watching your reaction to te NEXT EPISODE...goodness
Ironic, she's also one of my fav characters, and this fight was the biggest reason I finally quit reading the manga back in the day lol. I'm back now to see how it all ends, so I'll stick with it, but my sour feeling hasn't changed.
Kyoraku is my favorite Captain. Powerful, insightful, unorthodox but not seeking war. But willing to lead them through one even when he doesn't want to. And there can only be one kenpachi. Rewatch the episode where kenpachi fights Ichigo.
kenpachi naming the little pink haired girl after Unohana was my favorite theory i had back in the day and it was confirmed here. loved it. they totally should have just banged and raised the pink haired girl together.
It´s funny Kirinji pointed out Ichigo´s reflexes 😂Ulquiorra himself brought it up long ago too, both while blocking that cero with a masked getsuga in their first fight, and again to block Ulquiorra´s first attack upon going first release. Saying he did it instinctively. And remember zangetsu´s words about instinct? If Ichigo was an espada, his aspect of death would be pretty obvious. 🙌
Remember his lieutenant Yachiru? Kenpachi gave her that name and said it was from the one person he admired the most, now we know that person was Unohana. Yachiru Unohana
Yeah so a couple of things. 1, fun fact. If you recall, a very old flashback with kenpachi, when he saw Yachiru (little girl pink hair) for the first time, he named her Yachiru. He said its the name of the only person he ever respected, which he was referring to Unohana. Second thing. My interpretation of those two having to fight to the death, is one they start, they dont stop. Nobody going to stop them until someone dies; they are beasts that love to fight. So it is what it is. You put those two to fight, only 1 will remain
As we saw in the flashback Yama was kinda like a father figure to both Ukitake and Kyōraku, so that loss packed with having to replace him as head captain would've been unbelievably hard. Also, it was central 46 that sent the letter appointing him as head captain. Also, Kenpachi is a title. To be given the title of Kenpachi means you're the most deadly and the strongest shinigami. Therefore there can only be 1.
There are times when I have trouble keeping up with subtitles when a lot of action is going on, but trying to read them after Hikifune came out of the curtain was a battle.
Unuhana real name is Retsu. The same name Kenpachi gave to the little pink hair girl. He said it was the only person he respected. Like in the beggining of the series
The fact that Aizen doesn’t want any smoke from Unohana, means she is something. I am just pissed at the author for killing her character and not letting her fight against the quinces.
The rule of only having one Kenpachi might be related & explained in the later Bleach one-shot manga "No Breaths From Hell", it's not only tradition but also has a vital reason behind it.
@@naijagerd7909 I think it's when Shunsui explained about the soul reaper ritual where the fallen one was sent to hell because of their abundant power and spiritual pressure to keep balance of the realms. So it might be one of the reasons for only having one Kenpachi.
Basically they both love fighting so much that there isn't a single person capable of stop them to fight til someone drops dead. They need to train Zaraki so, once they cross blades, none of them will be capable to hold til the other is finished. Having Hachi or Inoue down there would be very risky for both considering Unohana's and Zaraki's battle state.
Actually old man yama is the only person makes her respected that much. So after he died it is like her main inspiration has gone. That all makes sense for her to no longer live in soul society rather to at least do her last job for making Zaraki stronger.
I get the frustration/confusion on why they have to kill each other when it reduces their fighting force, but I always rationalized it as Zaraki with this power up is supposed to be worth WAY more than the 2 of them combined. Powerful enough that it cancels out the numbers advantage.
[Tidbits & Clarifications] - It was removed from the last episode but you learn that the springs that Urahara created are based on Tenjiros (Like the Spring we saw when Yoruichi revealed her human form that Ichigo was recovering in) -Unohana being a Kenpachi was heavily foreshadowed throughout the entire series, it's the reason why squad 11 members were so afraid of her, It's why Aizen knew she'd catch on to his lie, and why even Captains like Shunsui and Ukitake feared her. (Another cool bit is that Aizen tried to seal Kenpachi in Hueco Mundo to avoid them until he was immortal) -This is our 1st time hearing Unohana's other name, which is Yachiru, the same name Zaraki gave to his Lieutenant when he found her. If you go back to that scene, Kenpachi said it's the name of someone he admired. (Unohana's fake name was even a Hint "Retsu" means Violent in Japanese) -Buff Kon was another comedy bit removed from the last episode, so it may feel a bit random here. - Given Kirio's words before they left her Palace, we now know that every Squad 0 member has done something that hugely affects how the Soul Society operates. Kirio made Gikon or Artificial Souls, and she says Ouetsu Made Zanpaktou, it's cool to wonder what the others invented. - Kubo has stated on Klub outside that he has an entire backstory for Unohana, he just hasn't found a place to show it. -It's cool to see the politics with Shunsui, it shows a stark difference between him and Yama. Yama simply upheld the law, as long as peace was the goal he honestly didn't care much...but Shunsui is a bit different, more experimental, and he's willing to do things that Yama would never do. (Also it's important to remember that while Shunsui is one to seek out conflict he is very sinister once it starts. We saw this with Starkk and how Shunsui fights, he cares little about playing dirty and will do whatever needs to be done.) [Reposted]
Unohana real name is Retsu. And Aizen wanted to trap Zaraki, not Unohana, she even goes in the world of the livings with ichigo and he doesn’t care at all. Aizen didn’t want to take on Yama directly because of his zanpakuto destructive power and didn’t want to take on kenpachi because he didn’t know the real extent of his strenght (which is curious since Aizen usually knows everything). That’s because Aizen already knew Zaraki power keeps rising according to the enemy he fights and didn’t know the limits of it and if he could have adjusted even to him before he could take him down.
Let's keep in mind Kenpachi, of his own volition, for no reason, decided to fight 2 captains and lieutenants and help invaders of the Soul Society simply because one of them was kinda strong. Also, because the shows not gonna tell you Unohana was the 1st Kenpachi she started the tradition and Zaraki is the 11th Kenpachi. We only know the 1st, 7th, 8th, 10th, and 11th Kenpachis as far as I recall. If she had it her way she would've had Zaraki kill her and pass the title to him ages ago. Oh and let's keep in mind this isn't training lol. I know it sounds that way and it's structured that way but it is not training. It is just what they say it is; a battle
Your reaction to Unohana was pretty much every manga reader when this came out first. There are numerous implications though. Like how Unohana was the only one who saw through Aizen as his Shikai manipulates senses but very early on they explained how Shinigami can improve their perception of things around them by constantly having to face death to train their spiritual senses. Its why Urahara sicced Ururu on Ichigo early on during this training, as he was put in a life or death situation until he can see her attacks not with his eyes, but to perceive it with spiritual power. The implication of Unohana seeing through Aizen was that her spiritual power and thus her perception are so vast cause she was constantly in life and death battles as Kenpachi that even Aizen's illusion did not fully work on her.
Unohana had to die because she was a barrier from keeping Zaraki from reaching his full potential. He limited his strength to her level once he realized that fighting her was the most fun, but he didn’t want to kill her because side he would have no one to fight on his level. Unohana realized Zaraki was the next Kenpachi when he almost killed her as a child. So she felt like he deserved the title but it didn’t pass because he didn’t kill her. Kenpachi has to surpass Unohana and kill her to continue to grow stronger. He will always limit himself unless she dies.
It does suck we had to lose Unohana, but basically there can only be one Kenpachi. Even though Zaraki took over the title in name only, it still was like a shared title. Was ok while soul society was basically at peace, but they need their main Kenpachi when war is already there. Also goes to show the power they think Zaraki has, that it is worth losing Unohana, who is already one of the strongest captains, just to "unlock" Zaraki the rest of the way.
Lexi: "Someone needs to die, I'm getting bored" Also Lexi: "Holy crap everyone is dying, stop!" Tite Kubo: "What do women want?" Another great reaction! You watching this arc was worth the wait!
Kenpachi started learning kendo and was forced to stop after a day because his progression was too unnatural. He let us know that back during his fight with Nnoitra.
the reason one of unohana had to go was because of kenpachis potential, this is base kenpachi , no shikai and no bankai , imagine how much stronger he would be if hes fighting toe to toe with a bankai unoahana in a base state
Their training requires Unohana to die because she resembles a limit Zaraki forced on himself so he could enjoy fighting more. Until Kenpachi can get over that limit then he's just a liability
Every person in Squad Zero created something important to the Soul Society. The healing for the one guy, the I can't spell it but you know what Kirio Hikifune said
Tbh UNOHANA is at her peak while we have been told kenpachi has not been close to being at he's peak at all which is what she wants to unlock from him you will get a better explanation in the next episode I guess.
Remember back then , Watch again episode 40.. Zaraki Kenpachi has no name .. He has no name, he has given himself this one which is more of a title than a proper name, he is the Kenpachi from the "Zaraki" district 80 North Alley of Rukongai.
To gain the title of Kenpachi, you have to kill the former one. Zaraki killed the one before him but now that Unohana decided to go back to her former personality to train him, it will be a battle to the death.
"Sending in one captain to die to power up the other is so stupid!" Preach on, sister! Seriously, as much as I loved the revelations about Unohana, it's only rivaled by my loathing of that inane logic. Even if Zaraki at full power was theoretically stronger than both Unohana and himself pre-training, it doesn't address the fact that Unohana is also Soul Society's best healer, and considering the number of casualties, she would be far more valuable in that role than as another frontline captain.
Yeah but unohana didn’t want that. Unohana lived for so long waiting for the day Zaraki would have killed her because he was the real kenpachi. Unohana established how the 11th squad works and how the rightful successor must kill the previous one, being a healer was only temporary, a facade waiting for the moment she would have returned to be her true self to accomplish her real task: dying as she should have that day when she met Zaraki, the only one worthy of that name.
@@Kal911 Except "Kenpachi" is the title for the one who loves *fighting* the most, not the one who loves *killing* the most. There's even precedent for Zaraki to insist on Unohana not dying in their duel, from his first meeting with Ikkaku. Zaraki spared him after their fight and encouraged him to get stronger so they could fight again, so it would have been more fulfilling for Zaraki to apply this logic again here. After all, killing someone as strong and battle-hungry as you is dumb because then the fun's over. So really, it would be more in line with a true Kenpachi to *not* kill their competitor for the title because it will guarantee more fights.
@@DoctorWortspieler kenpachi is the title of the strongest, not of the one who loves to battle more. Kenpachi spared Ikkaki because he couldn’t fight decently anymore, same reason why he was sparing Nnoitra. Or you think those hundreds of bodies he piled up as a kid were all ready to fight him until their last breath? If the opponent survives a killing strike from him and can no longer offer him a proper challenge he spares them, otherwise they are dead. And you can’t defeat unohana without killing her because she would heal herself and keep fighting.
@@Kal911 Kenpachi might be the title awarded to the strongest one who loves battle, but definitely not the strongest overall, evidenced by how Yamamoto was never a Kenpachi. As a kid, Zaraki described himself as being completely feral, killing without rhyme or reason, hence the piles of bodies. It wasn't until his encounter with Unohana that he felt enjoyment in battle, that there was more to fighting than mindless killing. I would actually credit this battle as what contributed to Zaraki's later practice of not bothering to finish off opponents who don't fight anymore, in the hope of future rematches. "And you can’t defeat unohana without killing her because she would heal herself and keep fighting." That sounds to me all the more reason to *not* kill off Unohana, as that would make her the perfect battle partner for Zaraki.
@@DoctorWortspieler are you actually questioning the meaning of being a kenpachi when it's literally explained several times and also by Unohana herself in detail? Zaraki even stated that he chose to call himself Kenpachi of Zaraki because he heard that Kenpachi is the title of the strongest shinigami and so he would have had that as his name since he was the strongest of Zaraki district. Yamamoto was never considered as part of it since he was the head commander, in fact Unohana never challenged him. The three rules of Kenpachi is: 1) Kenpachi is the title of the strongest shinigami 2) there can only be 1 kenpachi per generation 3) to get the title you must kill the previous one
I love that you mention how Unohana has always been portrayed as matronly and kind, and then we see in this episode that she's also the complete opposite. Her hair's graceful but messy when she moves around, her style of fighting is smooth yet demonic, she is sophisticated yet her poem at the end of the episode is simpler than even the staple powerhouse of the series who she is currently overpowering with ease. However, above all, she is in control of this entire situation. What Shunsui said about one of them dying isn't his preference, but hers. There's more to unpack but I'll stop there for now and wait for your next reaction! It's gonna be *Hell...*
With Yama gone Unohana is probably soul society's strongest straight up fighter. We've seen throughout the series that Zaraki has more potential than even Ichigo when it comes to raw power but he's constantly been stunted and both Kyoraku and Unohana think unlocking that potential is worth it even at a potentially extreme cost. So to rephrase the question.. would you trade current Zaraki and Unohana for someone even more powerful than Ichigo is? Also Kenpachi's are psycho's and if two of them test their strength then one of them is gonna die.... they can't help themselves.
Not sure where you are in your Patreon (doesn’t really matter, we’re not to that point in the anime anyway) but the manga didn’t really do a good job of explaining what/who the soul king is, and the details of how he came to be were some super confusing writing. I’m hoping the anime will explore that a bit more.
Ichigo certainly hopes to meet the king, maybe out of curiosity more than anything else, but he might not make the cut. After all, it’s a he really worthy?
After finding out Unohana was the 1st Kenpachi, it made sense why every time she would appear, all the other captains were afraid of her or afraid to talk behind her back

The fact you said Team Rockets blasting off again and then Ichigo pulled out a little talking cat "Kon" makes it even better
And there she is, my Number ONE favorite character in the whole series
I mentioned before that I got into Bleach out of order, starting with Cour 1 after it ended, but Unohana's battle was THE deciding factor in whether I'd sink my teeth into the series or not...which I did!
You know, if you waited 10 seconds, most of your questions would be answered, instead of pausing every 20 seconds. :)
kenpachi naming the little pink haired girl after Unohana was my favorite theory i had back in the day and it was confirmed here. loved it. they totally should have just banged and raised the pink haired girl together.
Drink every time she pauses.. after she said she would stop pausing.. lol..
There can only be 1 Kenpachi
the foreshadowing with Unohana goes sooooo far back to early OG bleach its crazy LOL.
😂😂😂 i feel the same way about the ending song. I love the first few seconds
I know you had mentioned not feeling the best and having much commentary during the beginning of TYBW, but its good to see you energetic again
Throughout the entire series the soul reapers kept mentioning how scary Unohana is and they have to be careful not to upset her. Now we know why
They have to fight to the death as like a passing the torch thing. A real identity of being the Kenpachi. I can't say anymore because it will spoil
Your reaction are definitely entertaining. And im a OG bleach fan
you can't be the Kenpachi unless you're stronger than the previous Kenpachi. Otherwise they wouldn't be the Kenpachi
I rmr reading this part in the manga when it first released. This was prolly the most jaw dropping twist in the whole series for me.
There are times when I have trouble keeping up with subtitles when a lot of action is going on, but trying to read them after Hikifune came out of the curtain was a battle.
Ichibe (monk with the beads) is the leader of all Shinigami while Yama was only gotei 13 leader
Unuhana real name is Retsu. The same name Kenpachi gave to the little pink hair girl. He said it was the only person he respected. Like in the beggining of the series
He named the lieutenant Yachiru, not Retsu.
The fact that Aizen doesn’t want any smoke from Unohana, means she is something. I am just pissed at the author for killing her character and not letting her fight against the quinces.
This isn't training, this is a date
22:05 Urahara founded the development and research, none of squad zero was part of it.
The rule of only having one Kenpachi might be related & explained in the later Bleach one-shot manga "No Breaths From Hell", it's not only tradition but also has a vital reason behind it.
What part of No Breaths From Hell do you refer to?
@@naijagerd7909 I think it's when Shunsui explained about the soul reaper ritual where the fallen one was sent to hell because of their abundant power and spiritual pressure to keep balance of the realms. So it might be one of the reasons for only having one Kenpachi.
why have two beasts when you can have ONE Demon
Basically they both love fighting so much that there isn't a single person capable of stop them to fight til someone drops dead.
They need to train Zaraki so, once they cross blades, none of them will be capable to hold til the other is finished.
Having Hachi or Inoue down there would be very risky for both considering Unohana's and Zaraki's battle state.
One of my favorite parts of Bleach. I’ve always been a massive fan of Kenpachi
Powerful enough that it cancels out the numbers advantage.
remeber how Aisen didnt want to fight Unohana in SOulsociety arc.But RAN LIKE BCH.XD
Kirio Hikifune is pretty cute when she thins down but when she's all thicc and voluptuous, well... Let's just say I'm glad it's not November.
[Tidbits & Clarifications]
- It was removed from the last episode but you learn that the springs that Urahara created are based on Tenjiros (Like the Spring we saw when Yoruichi revealed her human form that Ichigo was recovering in)
-Unohana being a Kenpachi was heavily foreshadowed throughout the entire series, it's the reason why squad 11 members were so afraid of her, It's why Aizen knew she'd catch on to his lie, and why even Captains like Shunsui and Ukitake feared her. (Another cool bit is that Aizen tried to seal Kenpachi in Hueco Mundo to avoid them until he was immortal)
-This is our 1st time hearing Unohana's other name, which is Yachiru, the same name Zaraki gave to his Lieutenant when he found her. If you go back to that scene, Kenpachi said it's the name of someone he admired. (Unohana's fake name was even a Hint "Retsu" means Violent in Japanese)
-Buff Kon was another comedy bit removed from the last episode, so it may feel a bit random here.
We saw this with Starkk and how Shunsui fights, he cares little about playing dirty and will do whatever needs to be done.)
[Reposted]
Unohana real name is Retsu. And Aizen wanted to trap Zaraki, not Unohana, she even goes in the world of the livings with ichigo and he doesn’t care at all. Aizen didn’t want to take on Yama directly because of his zanpakuto destructive power and didn’t want to take on kenpachi because he didn’t know the real extent of his strenght (which is curious since Aizen usually knows everything). That’s because Aizen already knew Zaraki power keeps rising according to the enemy he fights and didn’t know the limits of it and if he could have adjusted even to him before he could take him down.
idk but unohana, zaraki, starrk and aizen really same like they're have a loneliness in-deep heart.
Yes your ritht here my friend have nice day❤
"He lives in a F* crystal!!!!" 😅😅😅😅😅 I love this girl!!!!!!!!!!!!!😅😅😅😅😅
You don't need to worry Yhwach's words and actions are supposed to contradict.
14:06 I hope you say that for having two wives too 😂😂😂😂😂
Oh the subtle things you will realize when you ever watch Bleach scenes with Unohana in them again. XD
@3:30 “I swear on my cat… no, no never mind I do that.” lol good lass, great priorities. You’re cat is lucky to have you.
Kiriko used to be the head of R&D
Lexi: "Someone needs to die, I'm getting bored"
Also Lexi: "Holy crap everyone is dying, stop!"
Tite Kubo: "What do women want?"
Another great reaction! You watching this arc was worth the wait!
The Quincy could have done everyone a favor by starting out with destroying central 46
24:22 "eijaneka" 😂
My two favorite characters 👍😥
Yes your ritht here Me too they are amzing❤
you got the unohana hair out for this episode and everything
The three rules of Kenpachi is:
1) Kenpachi is the title of the strongest shinigami
2) there can only be 1 kenpachi per generation
3) to get the title you must kill the previous one
15:27 Good boy!
Love your energy
Unohana had to due because she was basically a roadblock to Zaraki's development. She's the reason he hasn't developed as a warrior for years.
unohana just kills him and then revives him to keep fighting until he becomes true beast that is what happened
It's getting good
I got my money on kenpachi to win.
OMG I'm so excited for you to see what's coming!!! I feel like I'm watching again right there with you!!!
We’ve been waiting for this one
18:46 bro😂
I have to acknowledge your will power though because I would've binged the fuck out of this
Zaraki wasn't good with swordsmanship, he' just bruteforce everything. He's. just that strong.
She's here! Welcome to the craziness!
there was alot of food i saw but only one snack
Thanks god i watching this on utube, da arrow keys work at it finest...
There is a reason why one of them have to die. It will make sense.
There can only be one kenpachi
Ichigo certainly hopes to meet the king, maybe out of curiosity more than anything else, but he might not make the cut. After all, it’s a he really worthy?
I just realized you'd be great as a Unohana cosplay with your long black hairs
