  • York 1973 a couple of Steam engines were used as floats for the Lord Mayors parade filmed by Derek Bennett of Settrington. The majorty of the orher floats looked to be on the back of vintage Lorrie’s & trucks that would have been brand spankers back in the 70’s with the exception of a Massey Ferguson 168 or 188 towing the house that jack built which must have been apart of theme as the police have used a phone box resembling the Tardis along with Dr Who & a couple of darleks to exterminate crime with there Range Rover. Filmed looking down low ousegate towards the river in Yorks city centre underneath 2 of the earliest installed cats above what was Sir Stephen Aitcheson grocer’s shop who occupied the buildings at the time, thought they would be eye-catching, and especially attractive to children in the 1920’s. Known as cat #5 & cat #6.
In November 1984, cat #5 was stolen, possibly as a prank, by someone who climbed scaffolding outside the shop. One paw remained attached to the building. The cat was found a few days later by a York teacher who returned it, and on 27th February 1985, the cat was returned in its original place. For more information, see the articles from the Evening Press on 13th November 1984 and 27th February 1985. The cat was removed in July 2008, apparently over public safety concerns. It took some time, but City of York Council worked with the owners of the building to get the cat reinstalled in June 2011.
