Thank you for your explanation!.I was struggling little bit with curves in Modo,i always wanted to use option: patch curves.Your tutorial - explained very well.
Wow!!!! Thanks to your tutorials I´m having fun with MODO again. I think I might even leave the hobbyst zone one day if I do them all. Thanks to you a million times. You are not only a very generous person, but an extraordinary teacher too! All the best, Eduardo
hi peter! I just have to thank you for what you do on youtube, and in a roundabout way you help me because I have no money enough (yet) to pay for private lessons. I'm from Brazil and the market in this sector is still very small in the country, I am newbie and still learn a lot from you! Thank you and sorry for the horrible English ;-)
+Victor Rech Hi Victor, thank you for your comment. I am very glad you find my little videos useful and i wish you all the best and a lot of success on your way with modo. When you do all my tutorials, then you know about as much about modeling and animation in modo as I do. Take care and kind regards, Peter
Hi Peter, thanks for this video! I actually had gotten very frustrated with the patch tool trying to complete the Le Mans C9 tutorial, I didn't pick up Andy's explanation as well. Now I can go back with a better understanding!
Thanks Peter! Nice tutorial! If the fourth click by patch tool is still stay on yellow status, we can use the control left click on the empty space to start over the pitch tool.
Hi Husam, thanks for your explanation. It's the same way in Rhino as well. But in Modo you can only select one rail curve (in curve extrude). All what you select after that, is considered geometry which has to be extruded along that one curve. If you have one rail curve and one curve to be extruded, then it works as expected. If you select more than one curve to be extruded, you get very weird results :-)) Try it out. It's in -Duplicate - Curve extrude. Kind regards, Peter
Hi, it's in : System - Preferences - Tool Handles - Draw Style - Selected Tool Handles - Advanced. The default is Basic. This path is for Modo 501. I hope it's still the same in 601. Kind regards, Peter
Hi Rachid, when you press CTRL and "1" key together, then a pie menu pops up where you can toggle the visibility of the vertices. (Toggle Verts). Kind regards, Peter
Hi Peter, quick question. When you patch, I noticed your patches seem to round out the edges, while mine do not. Is there something I am missing? I'm following pretty precisely, even cutting and pasting to new mesh but yours looks so good. :) Update: Well, I did it like a third time and for some reason, it works. Still experimenting with different methods on that urinal thing.
Eric Kirk Hi Eric, I think the reason it worked, is that you had double geometry (geometry on top of each other) which can happen VERY easily in modo and it is not modo's fault :-). Always run 'MeshCleanup' if you think something behaves strange. About that urinal thing: Just start with a quadball, cut out the parts you don't need, thicken it, then remove the outside parts you don't need and extend them (like i did in my model), and finally bevel the edges to move the spiders away of the critical edges. I think my 'Water Tap' tutorial and the 2 'How to avoid spiders' would be helpful to you. Kind regards, Peter
Because I ran out of time I could not mention the Luxology tutorial about modeling the Sauber C9 racing car. Andy Brown teaches you all about spline curve cages and lot's of other modeling techniques. I can only very much recommend this tutorial.
At the end of the video when you activated the thicken and then clicked into the viewport there was an overlay with units. How do you enable that overlay for the tools in modo? Thank you very much for the tutorial. I wasn't aware of this amount of flexibility using only curves.
Thank you Peter for this tutorial. Together with a tutorial by Juan Jimenez about curves and patches, I can now finally start modeling with curves and patches. Which is something that I wanted to do for a very, very, very long time ;-) I think that it is a shame, that curves, splines and patches are so unknown and un-loved. And as you mentioned, there are tutorials where complicated methods are shown. That does not help in making these elegant and productive tools more popular.
***** Hi, thanks for commenting and i am glad you found it useful. Thanks also for pointing out the tutorial from Juan. I have never seen that. Very useful. Btw i have a couple of others where i use splines, like the Mouse tutorial, the Seashell and the Predator Drone when i remember well. Kind regards, Peter
Peter Stammbach Thank you for your response. I have seen most of your excellent videos by now. But I skipped the Predator drone I think. I will watch it. Juan Jimenez makes very nice tutorials. Unfortunately they are all in Spanish. So it helps if you know a few Spanish words and already have some knowledge of modo, if someone wants to watch his tutorials. He demonstrates the use of patches and curves, using a car for a very brief example. But in his car modeling tutorials he use the standard modeling technic. I want to model a car using curves and patches for a very, very long time. Is it an idea for a new series of tutorials for you?
***** Hi, sorry for this late reply. I try to make my videos not longer than 30 minutes. One of the reasons is, that i do not want to compete with people who make a living with video tutorials and i could never do a car tutorial in 30 minutes :-) In addition, modo is not a nurbs modeler like Rhino3D which has many functions which are not available in modo. The best advise i can give you, is to get the Andy Brown tutorial from Luxology. He makes a Sauber Mercedes C9 racing car and he makes that completely with using curves and patches. Kind regards, Peter
Hello Peter, Thanks for the detailed reply. I see the conflict with the paid tutorials. It's a 'grey' area. The racing car tutorial is not listed any more on the Foundry's website and I can't find Andy Browns website. The Mercedes is the car in your RUclips image I guess. First I thought it was a Porsche. Modeling a car in 30 minutes would be a world record I guess, or an ugly car :-) That's why I suggested a series of tutorials. Maybe you could extend on your 2CV tutorials. Demonstrating how to deal with changes in mesh density, like when you locally need a detail, or the change in direction of the mesh flow. Like around the wheel arches. I realize that modo is a sub-d modeler. What I don't like about modeling that way is that the dimensions change. You always have to counteract the contraction. Curves and spline cages are such an elegant way of modeling, with a very low visual mesh density and what you see is what you get, in dimensions. But I'm trying to row against the stream. Better to go with the flow and learn to cope with sub-d contraction. I hope you had a nice holiday, Kind regards, Ad
Hi Peter, great video, would you please show us a tutorial on importing a small floor plan into MODO and show how to create the walls and open windows. My regards.
+Nour M. Hafez Hi, it's not quite what you are looking for, but there is an architectual visualitzation series of free modo tutorials from Andy brown. Have a look at: ruclips.net/video/xHp_LZELsqg/видео.html
+Peter Stammbach, Thanks Peter, I've checked the mentioned tutorial, I actually I am new to MODO I need to check if it serves me creating architectural concepts. My kind regards.
When I try the Clone tool (the part of the video from 2:10 to 2:35), it's cloning the vertices, but I can't see them -- first I see a row of little red, green and blue arrows in the places where the new curve should be, but I don't see a row of gray lines like you do, and I don't see them when I drop the tool either. I only can see that the curves have cloned if I do a lasso in the area with Vertices selected, which shows me the cloned vertices. Any idea why that is?
Mr Peter , Happy Day ! How are you today ? actually , could you make a earth in modo 801 ? please make a tutorial about earth ! i would to be thankful to you ! thanks ..... Nirmal Singh
+Nirmal Singh Hi, we are currently renovating our house and i just don't have the energy to do something with modo. Kind regards and all the best, Peter
thank you very very much for answering ! have a great day and happy life ! one more thing can we open the movie clip mp4 , mkv , avi for effecting in modo 801 ! because i know in cinema 4d is ok but in modo i don't know? .....nirmal
+Nirmal Singh Hi Nirmal, i think it is not possible. You have to split the movie into single pictures and import these. But maybe this has changed since modo 501 where it definitely was not possible. Maybe you should ask in one of the Luxology forums. Kind regards, Peter
Thank you for your explanation!.I was struggling little bit with curves in Modo,i always wanted to use option: patch curves.Your tutorial - explained very well.
Love Your tutorials. You are telling us about different ways or problems we can encounter. It's very rare. Thank You.
Hi, thanks for your comment. I am glad you like my tutorials :-) Take care, Peter
very well explained, especially that you show the workarounds around unexpected events (point stays yellow) and non self explanatory tool names etc.

Thank you so much for the tutorial! But what was the key to connect between vertices?
Hi Husam, bi-rail ?? Like multi rail sweep in Rhino3D ? I don't think you can do this in Modo. But I might be wrong. Kind regards, Peter
Hi Rachid, when you press CTRL and "1" key together, then a pie menu pops up where you can toggle the visibility of the vertices. (Toggle Verts). Kind regards, Peter

Hi, modo can import Rhino 3D files, but i have no idea how well this works with curves

Greatest tutorial ever!
Great. But it wouldnt be faster if you just clone and then bridge then together and just add some loops after that?
Hi Joseph, i think the C9 tutorial was done in Modo 301 and maybe certain things with curves were not possible at that time. Good luck :-) Peter
Hi, thanks for the tip. Kind regards, Peter

Hi, you must have at least modo 701 (or 901 even ...) and you must be in Polygon mode to clone curves. Hope this helps. Kind regards, Peter
Hi Julio, have a look at my 'Basic Mouse' tutorial, There i do a bit more with spline cages. All the best, Peter
Please how we can show vertexes what did u type and thank for tutorial i watched 10 videos explain it like u did i really thank u
Hello Peter, how do you weld the vertexes?
Thank you )
Hi, I recorded a small macro for Vertex - Join. Kind regards, Peter
Do you know the script that allows you to stitch many edges in one?
Thanks. Nice video, but I wish I could not hear you swallowing every 10 seconds.
Thank you Peter.
