Anatomy student here and what the nurse means is that you punctured the pocket of fluid in your kneecap called the bursa and the puncture allowed air into the pocket: which is why it made that weird gurgling noise. Usually they flush it out and seal the hole and wait for the fluid to refill itself when it gets punctured. Hope this helps✨

I’m going to med school gobby, I’m not a nurse but I’ll try my best to explain this simply based off what you said. Your knee is a joint formed between your femur (big bone in your thigh), your patella (your actual knee cap bone), and your tibia (the bigger of the two bones in your lower leg, the smaller one being the fibula). These bones come together to form three articulations/joints: two tibofemoral joints (articulations between your femur and tibia, one one each side of your kneecap) and a femoropatellar joint (centralized articulation between your kneecap and femur, pretty much under your kneecap). These joints have cavities filled with a liquid called synovial fluid that provide lubrication which allows for your bones to smoothly glide and essentially for you to bend and move your knee. When you stabbed yourself, you likely punctured one of these joint cavities, allowing for the synovial fluid to drain out (that gurgling sound) and air to enter in.
