How to install a HERRINGBONE Tile Shower Step-By-Step!
This is Episode 4 in my 1/2 bath to full bath remodel series!
This video will show you exactly how I installed the Herrinbone tile pattern with subway tiles in my Shower. This was an easy DIY project that utilizes a lot of tile skills.
Specifically, this video will show you:
1. How to cut the subway tiles tiles so that you can dry-fit the tiles on the floor.
2. How to start the herringbone pattern
4. How to mix and apply mortar / thin set to the shower walls.
5. How to place the tiles and set them in the mortar
7. How to adjust the spacing, clean out the grout lines, etc. in preparation for grouting.
I AM NOT A PROFESSIONAL TILE LAYER. This is just a step-by-step documentation of how I completed this project DIY style!

Hi nice job u did there, how many days?
Your diagram of installing 1, 2, 3, 4 Tiles doesn't match what you did. You have the cut tile installed last in your diagram but it looks like it is the first tile you install when doing it. Confusing.
Okay...pro tile setter here with a little critique and a couple of pointers. Ready? Good, let's go...
1. Your layout was spot on. Most people (and quite a few tile setters) have no idea how to lay out for herringbone correctly.
2. Realizing and sharing your mistake with the cleanup as you go was good as well.
3. The fact that you started on the back wall shows that you did a little research.
Kudos to you, Grasshopper. Now, for the pointers:
1. I'm sure you noticed that when you came around the corners with your tile, although the method was correct, the tile didn't exactly line up with the tile on the back (starting) wall. There's a really simple way to solve that problem: Assuming your tile is 1/4" thick, you need to cut 1/4" x 1/4" strips of either tile or if you have any wall board material left out of that and install them in the corners of your starting wall. Then tile up to the strip. You'll find that when you start tiling your side walls that your tiles will match perfectly with the tiles on your start wall. Here's a video that explains the method:
ruclips.net/video/s0gdDnOjfOU/видео.html
2. Making your cuts. Although using your manual cutter is by far and away the fastest method I normally only use that method on inside corners where I know the joint is going to be covered by caulking. On outside corners, like your niche or butting up to your Schluter jolly I usually use my tub saw. Cleaner, more accurate cut. Also, run a diamond coated sanding sponge on the cut edges to smooth them up before installing. Go to amazon and in the search bar type in tile sanding pads.
3. I know you've already caught shit about shoes. All I can say is....you just go for it. Just remember to keep your angle grinder away from your toes. Also, if your toes are as hairy as mine, cleaning thin set off them can be...rather painful. Hell, you can bill yourself as "The Barefoot Tile Guy".
4. Rant over and have a splendid day, Grasshopper.
Phenomenal comment and very helpful! The tile strip is great point - I was a bit perplexed why it looked a bit off...but it was minor to the point that I thought only I (and I guess you) would notice. Thanks again for watching and for sharing your expertise!
Sincerely,
The barefoot tile guy 😂
Dude ahahahaha I didnt notice and read this like what does he mean shoes hes fricken barefoot with the sharpest material and diamond blade lol... I dont know why or how the hell you did that... Its hilarious
Walls have to be really plumb right?
@@Jack-russell103 yes
Thankyou
You explained it better than some of the “experts”. I knew it was going to be a good one when you started with the plumbed wall instructions. Good job!
Appreciate it! Glad it helped!
Thank you for this video - from one DIY’er to another!!!! Very helpful, informative and concise
Looks so fresh!
I'm watching all your series with my wife. We want to remodel our bathrooms. After watching this video and all the work it takes, she said she will never consider this herringbone pattern, and consider only large format tiles 😂😂
Haha you and your wife are smarter than I was. Those small tiles were SUCH a pain. Good luck with you remodel and thanks for supporting the channel!
You did a very nice job! It looks beautiful. I'm anticipating your next project. 🍻
Thanks AC! And thanks for watching 🤙🏻
- GOOD job ! ! ! Herringbone pattern is sophisticated & very stylish but time consuming. Yhanx 4 making it look so "do-able."
Appreciate it! Thanks for watching!
Nope. It's not a good job at all. I wouldn't pay for that.
I plan on doing this design for my kitchen backsplash great content btw.
Good luck with your project! Thanks for watching!
One thing UI do like to see is the fact of setting out, the rookie tiler will always go for the point of the tile as a starting point not the half point so you get an even finish to the corner. I also did pick up on the point you didn't make a cut in the corner of the tile width as a square, to even the returns out and keep them inline. But your work is great and keep it up.
Appreciate the feedback and support, Simon! I definitely learned my lesson about the corner "cut" - will need to incorporate that into the next project. But I am always learning new stuff. Thanks for watching!
looks great.
Great job
Appreciate it, Mike! Thanks for watching!
Hey bud i enjoyed your video an appreciated what you said about staying clean as you go
I learned that lesson the hard way lol Thanks for watching, James!
Good job buddy
You did great job mate.I’m doin this 1st time so it’s great help thanks dude
I appreciate it and thanks for watching! Good luck with your project!
@@AndrewThronImprovements ..when you continue around to next wall...is that bigger piece the off cut of the smaller piece of previous wall...hope you understand...😎
@@anitagoodsleep5330 I did mostly, but check out the comment from "Grumpus" below. He left a lot of good tips and he is Pro tile setter! One of his comments addresses the technique for wrapping around the wall.
Shower turned out nice but I relike your work boots! Good job overall 👏🏼
Might be time to upgrade to a better pair 😂😅 thanks for watching!
Nice work, Andrew. However, I have a few suggestion for designing any shower stall, especially a small shower. It's better to have the doors swing outward, so that it's possible for a person to use shower with a small portable bench should it become necessary. Every shower needs a hand held shower hose. Controls for the water should be located where they can be turned on and off, and the water temperature adjusted without being sprayed by the shower. Everyone can use a handrail to grab now and again.
Layout Very Hardy beautiful jobs
Appreciate it! Thanks for watching!
Good job buddy. Youre pants look like mine when i tile. Thinset wiped all over them lol
Haha yea it's safe to say that those pants are retired. Thanks for watching!

Man looking like he cut tile right after he invented fire 🔥 put some shoes on sheesh
Bro you need to stop this😅😂
WoOoOoW fancyy!!!
Almost TOO fancy for a shower that size 😅
Never too fancy. Great job :)
Looks great! My wife and i are looking to do a hering bone pattern in our shower as well. What size tile did you use for your shower?
How did you hook up the drain to the existing plumbing? Just a collar to the existing plumbing?
We didn't like tiling but loved the feet
🤣😅😂
For such a new/young youtube channel your production values are great. What do you use to edit your videos?
Thanks Alexander! I Just use IMovie for now, but I would love to upgrade in the near future.
looks great! What size tiles did you use? Thanks for sharing!
Hi Jah! I have a materials list for pretty much every product used included in my cost breakdown video below: ruclips.net/video/19hmR7yqmZU/видео.html
Thanks for watching!
Really helpful video and channel! I see your fingers covered in the thinset - I’m working on tiling my shower currently and had to get a nice pair of gloves cause my right hand (fingers) swelled up and my skin cracked after using the thinset. 🥴 nonetheless, your bathroom looks really good 👍🏽 how much did you save doing it yourself?
Hi Kindale - Thanks for watching! Oh yea, thinset is awful haha. I would guess that I saved about 12k in labor! Hope your project turns out great.
Hello pal, you know the cuts at the edges and the wrap around effect does it matter if you mix up those pieces I know in theory they should be the same length?
Hi Marccas! In theory, they should all be the same (assuming walls are square, etc.). Thanks for watching 🤙🏻
beautiful job, what kind of shower door is that?
Thanks! Bifold shower door link and installation can be found in the description of my video below. Thanks for watching!
ruclips.net/video/0aPxJiYp3-U/видео.html
That's way too damn much work for me 😂 It's definitely a craft, and the end result looks stunning. But I'm going with 12x12 tiles and running them upright, non-diagonal. Anything is better than the jalopy bathroom I have now, hahahah! 🤣
Beautiful 😍 how many packs of tiles did you use in total??
Hi! I don’t recall how many packs exactly, but it was about 80SF. Thanks for watching!
What size tiles did 2 use?
How long did this shower take you? I’m working on a similar Reno and want to get a better gauge of timeline
Hi Benjamin! It honestly took a few months since I was working intermittently. But if I worked on it continuously I would estimate around 2-3 weeks. Good luck with your project.
Where is the shower door from ?
How long did it take you from start to finish on this project doing it yourself?
Hi Jason, this probably took roughly 20 hours. I spent about a week doing this working for a few hours each evening.
Good Video. I don't think you need to back butter small tiles like these.
Thanks Tony! And I think you are right - the amount of thin set squeeze-out I was dealing with was unreal. Lesson learned. Thanks for watching!
Not running the full field tiles but definitely should for cuts as time causes thinset to haze over.helps bond.
@@johnbell1246 Appreciate the comment - will keep that in mind for next time. Thanks for watching!
What did you use to record it? On 240p? a tile?
Dude, what's the details on the folding shower door? Is it custom?
Nope, it’s off the shelf! I forget the brand off the top of my head, but I’m going to release a bi-fold door installation video next week. Thanks for watching 👌
As promised, here is the video on the glass shower door! ruclips.net/video/0aPxJiYp3-U/видео.html
Bare foot around cuted tiles??? WTF??? That's miracle he's still alive.
Where are your shoes dude?
7:36 You can see how badly lines matching in the corner.
Using a angle grinder bare footed -
Not my worst idea, but I agree - very dumb. Steel Toe is the way to go. Thanks for watching!
Grinders and cutting tiles with no shoes on a big mistake!
Agreed. Definitely need to step up my safety game in a few areas. Thanks for watching!
@@AndrewThronImprovements No worries brother just hate to see you or anyone get hurt!
Get your self a new shirt. Lol.
But the pants are fine though, right? 🤣 thanks for watching!
Darwinism at its finest.
Haha I definitely could have used some shoes - Thanks for watching!
No, no, no... That is a D.I.Y. level. I expected superPRO. Look close at the corners. Lines don't match. Poor quality. No, no, no.
How long did this shower take you? I’m working on a similar Reno and want to get a better gauge of timeline
Hey Benjamin! This took me about a weekend to tile. I would say plan for a weekend for the waterproofing as well. Good luck with your project!
@@AndrewThronImprovements thanks for the advice! I’m using Laticrete hydroban for the waterproofing and it’s liquid applied (you paint it on) so it should be much faster than the sheet membrane process, but the tiled area is significantly larger so that part won’t be so simple I think
