    As an engineer of almost 3 decades with extensive experience in most areas of the field I’m quite critical of some of you “pro reviewers” on RUclips as some (I won’t name) I consider to be out of their depth and misleading with some of their “advice”, but I have to admit Angus I really value your solid reviews of things. These printers are essentially a glorified CNC Machine, and there’s a lot of mechanical engineering and thermodynamics involved in 3D printing as you well know, yet certain reviewers seem to overlook all this and can end up handing out misleading and worthless advice for fixing print issues.Your probably one of,if not the only person I recommend people looking at getting into printing to watch. Your not generally biased and you are first to admit if something is outta your scope of knowledge, or you got something wrong in a previous video. Keep up the good work mate👍

    • @MakersMuse

      Thanks John! I really appreciate it. I started with CNC but it was out of my scope and budget at the time so moved into 3D Printing. I do intend to delve back into CAM and share what I learn. I definitely make mistakes but do hope to share them in an effort to prevent others from doing the same thing. Cheers! Angus

      Maker's Muse I spent a number of years at the end of my career as a design engineer for a well known US company and all my CAD work was with Creo so I’m not so familiar with mesh mixer and autodesk products (haven’t used auto cad since 2006!), but I’ve learnt plenty just watching your few videos on what it is, and the basics of what you can do. I give lots of credit to ya for being totally honest and letting your viewers know the extent of your knowledge with the software-in any case you certainly gave me a good introduction to an otherwise foreign piece of software! Cheers

      This review is immensely helpful for me, as someone fairly new to 3d printing. When coming in brand new to any skill, one of the hardest parts isn't so much getting good advice and learning materials, but weeding out bad advice and leaning in to good advice. Hearing from a pro in the industry saying, essentially, "yes, this person can be trusted to generally give good advice" is priceless and can potentially save me tons of time going down (hopefully not deformed, ha!) rabbit holes.
      I'm a programmer by trade and when learning a new technology or programming language I often end up wasting at least a few hours digging around on the web, understanding who I can trust and who is either never going to tell me what I need, or is going to just be completely wrong. The value of bypassing that noise and getting right to the signal can't be overstated. So thanks to Maker's Muse for the excellent video, and thanks, John T, for the review. I'm optimistic the two of you have just saved me hours, possibly days of fruitless research.

    For creating stamps from SVGs you can use an SVG to STL converter (I personally use Blender) to get an 3D representation from the 2D shape. Then import the STL into Meshmixer. There you just select everything and create the stamp as you did in the video. It's a bit of a workaround, but works well

    • @ScottVanKirk
      @ScottVanKirk 5 лет назад

      This is a good way to do it. converting SVGs to meshes is trivial in Blender.

  • @Dramaican88
    @Dramaican88 6 лет назад +16

    Angus you can just design your logo in Fusion 360, extrude it a bit (something like a 2.5D logo), export as stl, import it in meshmixer as a mesh, create a facegroup from the surface of the mesh and then convert to stamp. I don't know how well it would scale, but it would definately work as a way to make a custom stamp. Maybe you have to scale the stl before creating a facegroup.

    • @MakersMuse
      @MakersMuse  6 лет назад +5

      Sounds like an interesting workaround! I'll look into it . Cheers

      Maker's Muse that's what I was going to suggest.. Was just going to suggest extruding an svg in tinkercad to make the model first (for simplicity)

      OpenSCAD might work well for this, you need to use inkscape (or another tool) to convert to EPS to import it, but it should work too.

    Angus, You are The Man!
    I've played around with MeshMixer for hours, and only ever managed to learn what Delete does after creating a mess.
    But seriously, your videos are the key that unlocks creativity, by inspiring people to try something new. Out of that process comes real learning - even if it is only to produce psycho-morphed bunnies.
    Keep up your excellent work. And the hair looks better ....

    You are awesome! Make complex is going to make my life so much easier. Just in case you don't see my other post, it is crazy easy in Blender to take an SVG and turn it into an stl - just import SVG, select the object, convert curve to mesh, export and done.

    I've been looking to make some custom TPU stilt treads, as I make stilts for the local circus community as a hobby. The tread itself is pretty important, which is why I've thus far used bike treads cut into semi-rectangular shapes, stapled to the stilts. Having custom rectangular cylinder caps would be a perfect addition. Easy enough, but how to do the caps? Well, after faffing about looking for tutorials on it, I find this video, where you cover the stamp tool Perfect! Absolutely perfect! I'm one of a half dozen local stilt makers and I'll be the only one with custom printed, durable stilt treads that require minimal maintenance.

    For the logo stamp thing, you can use Blender to convert SVG's into meshes (I just don't remember if the addon comes enabled by default or if you need to go in the settings and enable it).
    You import, then convert to mesh, then go into edit mode and turn the outlines into faces, then you tell it to triangulate the faces.

    I found a way to make a stamp of a drawing made in Inkscape or illustrator: convert it to a stl file in Blender and then place it Meshmixer and put camera infront of it, then press "convert-to-stamp" and the shape will be stored in the stamp list :D

    hey just wanna let you know we can create better stamp by first dropping the SVG into your 3D design program (lets say fusion360 in my case), do an extrude to create a solid flat model, then drop that model into meshmixer, select all the faces and then create stamp

  • @Nagby3
    @Nagby3 6 лет назад +1

    for stamping logos
    i think you could import the svg in a modeling software, like fusion 360
    extrude it
    export it as stl
    import in meshmixer
    select all the triangles of the face showing the logo (is there a way to quickly select all coplanar triangles?)
    and create a stamp

    Angus, just a suggestion, when a video first loads, there is always a Add banner at the bottom, if you tuck you mini video down there, the add covers you. Perhaps place it on a top corner, We both know, longer the add stays up the better off your youtube channel will be.

  • @tetsuoswrath
    @tetsuoswrath 6 лет назад +1

    Angus, shouldn't you be able to use a 3d model of your logo to make the stamp? Like how you used the triangles on the bottom of the rabbit?
    If you load your logo's 3d model then select the model's triangles like you did the M shape on the bunny's base, wouldn't that let you stamp your logo?
    Another great video by the way. I love seeing the programs/tools you use to make these cool models. :{J
