This song was originally made for a trashy soap opera. I think Rick Springfield was a character on the show at the time? I never watched the show but I'm guessing the characters eventually hooked up.

This happened to me and my best friend in high school. I wanted his girl so bad. We hung out as a trio quite often so she and I were always together. I respected my boy though. I did nothing inappropriate and kept my fantasies to myself. My buddy was a serial dater though and I knew he would cast her aside soon enough. Soon enough became 2 years. But they did break up amicably and we all remained friends. I asked him if it was cool if I dated her. He said he was down with it. And I got 'Jessie's ' girl in the end. Married for 31 years now.

Actually despite what many people comment about "Jessie's Girl", it is extremely common in school for someone's buddy to date a girl you may want to date also...after all, most guys are usually eyeing the same girls that their buddies and circle of friends are. The only uncool thing is to try and snake away the girl or backstab your buddy. Rick isn't trying to or talking about stealing his "best friend's girl"...he just wishes he was in his buddy's shoes and he had landed her.
It is funny that "The Cars" had a huge hit in this period called "She's My Best Friend's Girl - But She Used To Be Mine"

Just because he wants a girl like that, because he sees how happy they are, doesn't mean he wants to steal her away, it just means he wishes that he had a girl like that for himself and he might find someone like that out there one day!

Brad, as Lex alluded to, art reflects the entire human experience. To ignore the darker parts of our characters in art wouldn’t be honest. I swear that everyone hearing this song for the first time forgets what it was like to be young. Particularly that teen to early 20s part of your life when you were still maturing. Many, if not most, people had a crush on a friend's partner at some point.
This is a JAM and he was such a hottie, all of us were in love with him. This song is still played everywhere today.
I don't believe he's talking about drugs .... being cool with the lines is just being cool with things he says to her... like pick up lines or being funny with jokes and such. He's saying he wants a woman like her and he's definitely jealous but he's not acting on that aside from Possibly low key flirting with her through "come on lines". I was a roadie for a Rick Springfield concert in summer of 1985, he was the bomb! Took place at West Fargo Fairgrounds, hundreds of blond permed hair girls - Rick would make one small move, and they would go crazy! One memorable thing: there was a long (~50') runway in front of the stage, about 8 to 10 feet above the ground, a teen girl was hoisted up to the top/end of it, and started running full speed towards the stage, the crowd went crazy, and just before she got to Rick, a security guy grabbed her and whisked her offstage.
Fell in love with this song when he said the word "moot" and used it correctly in a sentence.
About 15 years ago I was employed with a company that supplied stage gear for local concerts. I worked a Rick Springfield concert on the beach in Ocean City Maryland. I must say he put on a good show and it was shocking how many hits he had. I had forgotten about most of them until they were played.

My mind goes straight to that drug deal scene every time I hear this song and Sister Christian from Night Ranger. One of the best movies of all time. Dirk just staring into nothing while firecrackers keep popping in the background and robed Alfred Molina dancing. The damn best.

Well, good songs reflect the human experience, the good bits and the bad bits, like jealously. I've always had the impression that the singer in this song is a teenager, who's still learning boundaries and self-control and also suffering from the despair of ever getting a girl that afflicts teenage boys in particular, right up to the moment they actually get one.

Somehow I missed this song when it first came out. I didn't hear it until many years after it's release, when my friend Jesse, AKA Sancho, began singing it one day, and then played it for me.

This song was Rick Springfield’s first hit in the USA. He wrote the song about his friend’s girlfriend. I remember from an interview he gave at the time it had just been released, he admitted that the woman in question never gave him the time of day, and she ended up marrying the friend Jessie.
Actually Brad, what Rick was saying when he'd said being cool with the lines, was that he was cool with keeping his feelings for his friend's girlfriend under wraps
As a matter of fact, this song was based on a real-life experience that Rick Springfield had been through while he was in college where a friend of his had gotten a girlfriend and both he and the friend were in the same Class at college as his friend's girlfriend and due to how he'd had feelings for the girlfriend, it'd prompted Rick to change classes
Rick Springfield started out as a Soap Opera actor on General Hospital in the 80's then he put out an album. Looks like the soap opera's script made its way into his music.

All 80s all the time up in here! Yeah the level of coveting that Rick gets to in this song is just plain wrong lol. One more edit - the funny thing here is that this song came out when I was like 8 or 9, but it was top-40 and on the radio all of the time. We'd just walk around singing the chorus without a clue how deep the depravity goes. It's like you know the surface question when you're that age, but not quite the level of creep that gets you to that point. I should also point out that he's singing from a character's POV. My guess is that he's recounting conversations that he's had with creeps.

It's one of those songs that hits a note that is rarely done. Tons of songs of the heart broken, the guy or gal who was cheated on, people falling in love, in love, missing love, yada yada ... but Rick goes for it with it being from the other guy's perspective.
