I am an old goth, and a friend back in the 90s baked a coffin cake with black icing for someone's birthday. She used all she had - lots of food colouring. All our mouths were black and it tasted so gross! (the icing, the cake was nice). I love that there's a way to do this in a way that isn't gross!

Every week, my early Saturday morning is spent with my Watch Later list, built through the week, and you are a must-have part of it. I have saved several recipes and wish listed many of your tools. (I don't have the money or the space for them all lol) I can't wait to try the ginger one. I'm gluten free and I have found the reverse creaming method works best for the butter cakes. I'm hoping I can get good crumb with converting your recipes.

Others have pointed out that the cake decoration is baroque, not gothic. But there is one gothic element, which is the straws used to support and stabilise the height and weight of the layers. Gothic architecture also used clever techniques to allow them to build higher and higher. Well done you, looks amazing !
i had a gothic wedding cake. i was told the day before my wedding that i should change the colors of my cake because it would look tacky if they messed up. i flipped out but thankfully my cake turned out gorgeous. that was 7 years ago. this is lovely and makes me want to redo my whole wedding for our vow renewal next year.

I'm extremely late to this party, but it's fascinating to see that the gum paste techniques essentially haven't changed from Victorian times. The moulds might be silicone and not wood, but the technique is essentially the same. Ivan Day would be proud.
My little goth heart cannot handle such sheer perfection. It's a nice little balance of very victorian romantic goth with a small bit of modern. It's not overwhelming in a sense but very much feels haunted.

you should make a cake where if you cut a part of a cake something oozes out and if you cut another part of the cake it will be like marble and another part of the cake could be like a bitter taste or super sweet and it goes on and on for the cake its like a haunted house but cake you don't know what will happen like if you agree :-)
another way to make a really gothic cake! 1. make cake batter 2. turn oven to 350 degrees 3. bake for for 12 hours. (make sure its *extra* crispy) 4. wait for the firemen to stop your burning house with your grandmas ashes in it. 5. take out of oven. *~tip~* you can used the charred bits of your house for sprinkles! 6. put on plate. 7. serve at your husbands funeral. 8. don't tell the police! :D
You can't see it really well on the video because of the lighting but the paper gave the bottom a crackle texture effect. So it looks cracked like stome. He just did it for the texture

If anyone is curious, Hershey's Special Dark cocoa powder has the same black coloring as the King Arthur Flour, but is probably easier to find at a local grocery store. And it works great! I made a black buttercream with it for a "laser goth" friend and it was top notch.

heres a baking tip: If you ever roll out black fondant, use coco powerder instead of flour so you won't get those white marks on the fondant.
It comes off tho and i wouldn't want cocoa powder all over my fondant
