I don’t know if ‘like’ is the right word but that really hit home and the story is news to me. I was born in an army nissan hut and Devizes was part of my area when I worked from an office in Bath. Wow, Bruce, you are an excellent story teller 🌞
Another great story, adding detail to what I knew. I used to get a summer job at Cultybraggan in the 1960s and early 70s when university and school cadets came for one or two weeks training in the area around Comrie. I don't envy anyone who spent a harsh winter in those huts. The camp was pretty much as it was when the POWs went home. The toilets were memorable to say the least. The stores were run by a Polish soldier (ex guard possibly) who'd settled in Comrie. Saucepans are still Pans Sos to me, as they appeared in the inventories. It was while working at Cultybraggan I learnt about hayboxes and retained heat cooking, somrthing that might prove useful this winter.
Thank you very much for this story. As I found out lately, my German grandfather was for a short time of period in 1946 in this camp, before he was sent further to camps in England. I am planning to walk the Rob Roy Way next year, so I want to do do the additional walk to Comrie to have a look there.
@Scottish History Tours That's a riveting story, Bruce. I read quite a lot of Second World War history but I'd never heard anything about this episode until now. It would make a great movie. Here's a question, though - there must have been one hell of a racket when the Nazis were beating this poor sod to death all night. Where the hell were the prison guards and what were they playing at?
In Ireland ( Neutral in WW2 - & we called it "the Emergency") the German POW's got day passes to visit the local Cinema, here in the Curragh Camp in Co. Kildare. The IRA prisoners however were kept safely under lock & key. another Great Story Bruce, Well Done!
I was there 1978 as a boy soldier , the ablutions were still POW fitted with doors that just covered the torso , scary place , very well presented narrative well done .

Being fairly local, we've been here. It's an interesting place - you cannot quite forget who was here - the stories of the real Nazis on the info boards are chilling. On a happy note, the orchard is great, if you're into such things, like me!
Vert true about good and bad POWs---mother was a nurse during the war, and often spoke of German POWs helping wounded, both sides and civilians, who were free to go any where---many stayed after the war.
My education will never be complete. I don't want it to be, because finding historical nuggets like this just make me say Wowww a lot and want more. Thank you.
40 years ago... 1980? I was there as an Air Cadet too! Last there for the Strathearn Marathon in 2017, really pleased it's still there. Love the vids, please keep them coming!
Bruce, I've studied history for many years and I've never heard of this. Thank you so much. You've proven once again, someone needs not be a professor of history to teach others history properly.
What a great story! They all have been so far. I first watched one of your videos one week ago (I believe it was “What They. Don’t Say About the Massacre of Glencoe”), I was hooked and had to go back and start watching your videos from the very first one.
I was there at the weekend, been up a good few times now. The museum was always really interesting but it's sadly closing down ( committee politics etc......) it's a shame as a lot of the history that was in the place has been left to rot or just painted over. Anyway enough of my grumbling lol great video as always
during basic army training we spent 2 weeks based there, we would live there at night but do hillwalking, abseiling, kayaking etc in the general area , we were told this story on our stay
There's a fabulous underground bunker at Cultybraggan, once used as a nuclear shelter. Now had been bought and been turned into a data centre. Two floors, huge amount of space, complete with decontamination showers at the entrance.

I was there with the cadets too. D Cally fae the Gorbals. Our sergeants were drunken arseholes that would make us get up and do the big run, naked fae the waist up at 430-5am, dame in Dechmont. I was so glad to get out of that crap. Had some great times too though.
Horrifying part of history that I have never been aware of before. The blame possibly could be 50/50 , Scotland for knowing the probable outcome and the Germans who beat the poor man to death.
@@ScotlandHistoryTours might explain Rudolf Hess at Floors farm….just carrying on the WW2 narrative. Usual fascinating video, all the best in anticipation.HS86.
No, according to Brucie boy, the "whites" were the good Germans, and the "blacks" (which happens to be my ethnicity) were the diehard National Socialists. The joke is my Granny's maiden name was Brown....and we're Jamaican. So what does that make us?
BTW: all bets are off if your Grandda had an "SS" tattoo in his armpit....Just saying. And even that can be forgiven, just so long as your no a Campbell.
