Well Ubuntu should adapt the Hybrid Graphics Mode of Pop! it's like on windows that switches off the dedicated GPU when not used, but if it detects a heavy load of processes automatically turns the GPU on. this is a thing that ubuntu should adapt from pop
Honestly I use Pop_os daily on my old 2014 razer laptop and it's great. I feel like it runs so much smoother with this than windows in all honesty. I would recommend if your a light user of laptops.
Makes me really think about using PopOs with VFIO instead of this Windows 1803 which still doesn't want to update (and I don't want to be a Microsoft beta tester anymore)
I would love to see Budgie as an official option from Pop!_OS. I can tolerate Gnome. But I have to tweak the crap out of it to make it bearable. For me, Budgie is a nice sweet spot balance.
Pop is a wonderful OS, and I can't believe you can have this kind of quality for free. I was using a 10 years old laptop with Debian and XFCE on it, which I loved. No issues, very stable. But when I wanted to install Debian on my newly acquired HP laptop with Nvidia Optimus...well, let's just say I had three attempts before giving up because it would just break trying to get the gpu and the wifi to work, and I was beginning to worry about having to switch to Winblows 10, the horror. Turns out Debian is great, but it does not get along very well with newer non-free hardware for desktop use (not to mention having to stick with Bumblebee, which is not mantained anymore and not so convenient to use). With Pop everything just worked out of the box. If Linux is going to win the desktop, this is the way. They've earned my trust and I know for sure my I will buy my next computer from them.
Are you editing your own videos on Linux? if you dont mind me asking. Which Distro, editing program, and how is your experience doing so.. I have tried to get Davinci Resolve going on Manjaro. It works its usable except that you cant record audio using Resolve on Linux and i do a lot of that. I am almost certain its the software because other apps can record just fine. Just wondering what your set up is.
System76 needs to sell those amazing looking pc cases separately cause I need one in my life right now. Screw generic black or glass boxes with enough rgb to induce an epileptic fit give me a nice minimalist design and throw in hand crafted wood in there.
LinuxWill Rise Mint doesn’t “only use” LTS. Only the .10 (example: 18.10 LTS) have LTS. The rest that are .04 (example: 19.04) are new releases that basically come I think like once a year. Afaik, Pop!_OS 19.04 is based on Ubuntu 18.04 (as I said, that’s just afaik, and heard)
It seems like Canonical doesn't really care about the desktop nowadays. Only server/IoT/Cloud stuff. And I get it, that's where the money is. I've tested Pop!_OS recently and I really like it (too bad it doesn't like my old laptop's graphics card - NVS 3100M). Good to see that there are still distros strictly with a desktop in mind out there. BTW I use Xubuntu.
This video makes me want to install Pop_OS! on my system, but I also want to give Arch Linux another try (used it for a year on my old PC before I bought a new one in dual boot, was very pleased with it). Manjaro and Fedora are also contenders, but I love to KISS.
@@gregzeng I use Arch on my laptop, Manjaro on my 2 desktops (I only use Manjaro on one because I had troubles with IOMMU on Arch). I spend half of my time in terminal and I prefer commands rather than GUI. I do admit I don't always read the manuals, but when I really need some info, it's just one "man" away. I need a GUI because otherwise I can't browse the modern (very unpleasant) web (and no, w3m or lynx is not enough)
I've got pretty crappy old hardware and PopOS runs really well on my desktop. I;m using it right now, and, I've been using it for about two months... Everything works, it's fast - no complaints.
I'm not certain the "deal with the devil" thing matters that much to end users. Personally, I've been an avid Linux user since '07 and I really do not care what Stallman thinks. I know that's important to a lot of users but I'm more of a Torvalds-style "use what works best" user. I don't defend proprietary software but I honestly don't run with the crowd that actually thinks it's some ethical dilemma.
Pop!_OS doesn't like that my laptop screen is 4K, kept asking me if I wanted LoDPI then HiDPI and it kept asking over and over, it didn't memorize that I always wanted LoDPI.
Pop OS does some magic gnome shit to such an extent that it's so far the only borderline plug'n'play distro I've found for my obscure gaming laptop. Optimus works out of the box
I would really like to move to Linux on my Dell Inspiron laptop. Pop looks interesting, I'm about to install it on a thumb drive for testing. I've been playing with Linux for years but wind up going back to Windows. I'm not a gamer but I do graphics and would like good graphics editing and management software besides Gimp. I would also love a good music management app that doesn't alphabetize all groups that begin with "The" under "T".
I've been using Manjaro for a couple of weeks now, set up vfio and that part is running great. There's one issue I've yet to overcome however, and that is the less than smooth desktop experience in Linux compared to Windows. Things like moving windows and scrolling and dragging thing things are just not smooth. So far I've tried Manjaro Cinnamon, KDE and XFCE. Right now I'm using Manjaro XFCE with Compton. I've tried pretty much every suggestion I've found when searching and sure, it's smoother now than it was before, but it is still far from as smooth as it is in Windows - something I'm reminded of every time I start my VM to play some games. I had this same issue years ago when I tried out Ubuntu and Linux Mint between which pretty much all of my hardware has been exchanged. At this point I don't know if it's something inherent in Linux that causes this, but I see people claiming it's smooth for them, which makes me wonder if that's true or if it's rather that I have higher standards for "smooth" and it's just not bothering these people? I don't know. Overall I like Linux and I'll stick with it, just wish I could get this issue resolved since I know the experience could be better. Maybe it has something to do with my primary monitor being 1080p 120hz and my secondary monitor being 1080p 60hz? But even if I set it up to VSync against the primary monitor, instead of auto, it's still just not smooth. I don't know why I wrote this here.. It's a bit off-topic I guess.
@@futanari333 The screen tearing was rather easy to get rid of, but the resulting vsync just isn't smooth vsync like it is in Windows, it's stuttering. Certain tweaks were able to reduce the stutter but it's there none the less.
Has anyone had luck with a GTX 960m in optimus in Pop!_OS? I've had nothing but issues recently in vanilla Ubuntu 18.04 LTS and I'm wondering if System76 has been able to work their voodoo magic to get it working out of the box.
I was looking a building a computer just for a toy to try cool stuff with. I found a pair of opteron 6386 es processors for 27.00 each and a working compatible board for 150. With enough memory, my intent is to play with virtualization. Could I run a modern virtualization with this set up? I want to run multiple Operating systems in their own virtual machine. I want to run linux as a daily driver, and a windows 10 machine for a few apps that require windows.
I've been trying to switch to Linux for a long time now. I've statrted with installing Mint on my laptop, and although it was fine for the most part, gaming was finicky and I couldn't get my printer drivers to work. But since I've got my new pc (albeit assembled from used parts) I wanted to try pop!_os. But it just doesnt work out of the box. It can't even detect my graphics card for some reason, not to mention some other stuff. On the contrary, Windows just works (for me). What do I do?
it's odd ive tried 15v and 17 v intel and on hd install blank my drive it failed after trying to set up 1 uefi system and one none . achi mode for drives while 18.04.2 based Supergamer works off the bat for me ssd and nvme . used live mode gparted / as drive no swap where as 18.04 works with my stuff.
Does it have a working IME, that works for Japanese on a US keyboard, with a customizable keyboard shortcut (not like IBus where it is Shift+Super+Space, instead of Super+Space as the documentation states, with no working option to change it)? The built-in IME in Windows just works, but each Linux IME that I have tried has one or more unresolved issues.
Tried installing, doesn't allow me to choose drive for bootloader 🤨. Partition picker is weird too and it points user to gparted where a noob can easily wipe the wrong drive... Why replace the installer Ubuntu uses? Distro looks great in a VM tho.
In my experience I had headache to make gpu work, I have an nvidia 980 ti and a 9600k. Tried ubuntu 19, tried pop os latest version, when I am using default nouveau drivers everything works but no acceleration, when using nvidia drivers installation breaks in many ways... And anyway when I got it to work I couldn't play any windows game that I wanted, so it's a no for me now... I hope it will get better.... I heard about qubes is that can use windows software natively, do you guys know anything?
Did anyone else using popos 19.04 have shutdown issues when using vfio gpu passthrough? Mine will hang and freeze when doing a shutdown or restart of the host system.
Thanks for the work you've been doing in these things. You look like you're worried you're killing a puppy when explaining proprietary drivers and RMS. Don't, you're right. Free is important but it's much more important regarding management engine / PSP. I'd love to see Free & Open graphics card drivers but at the end of the day I can pull that card out and still have a working system. Management Engine? Not really. I think Purism is a taking a good route on many issues but I also know the end user gamer and content creator is never going to care. They just want there applications to function. We need both sides of the coin if we want a successful Linux alternative on the desktop. I respect RMS spending so much effort in this issue, then I regularly go against his path when installing my system. I worry there will come a day when no one is advocating strongly like he does today. But ... nearly any result from expanding Linux as a desktop is better than the current situation. PS. Written by a guy who was working on the Linux Desktop as a commercially viable alternative since 2003. Remember Java Desktop? It turned into an abortive mess but had many good intentions. I had so many large customers liked up to switch. The Free issue was a big part of the problem in adoption back then. I just want it to succeed. These days I'm just an aging gamer but have watched this ebb and flow for a long time. It feels like we're almost to the tipping point where I can recommend a Linux install, maybe with a Windows VM, to less techie folks.
Yes and no I am that gamer who wants things to just work, but more importantly, I want choice I have no choice when it comes to the Management Engine and that infuriates me, I use a 10-year old laptop that hopefully one day soon I will get around to Corebooting But I am also incensed by how RMS and his ideology operate I choose coreboot over libreboot because libreboot removes my choice to use a discrete graphics card-coreboot does not I refuse to use PureOS or Distros like it that make it difficult to use proprietary software that I CHOOSE to use- such as steam Forcing users into sacrificing usability for the sake of the developers "higher principles" is hypocritical When Purism comes out with a quad core model of their laptop-you bet your bottom dollar I'll buy it, heck I want to buy the librem 5 Maybe I'm wrong about RMS and such, I will never actually tried GNU or PureOS, merely looked into the software and saw mentions of difficulty adding non free repos or software and that's all I needed Also RMS comes across as a little petty demanding I refer to it as GNU/Linux...it's more accurate sure, but on GNU's website it goes on about how we were here before Linus and we gave him inspiration Grow TF up, you've been eclipsed, be happy that you are a part of history, stop acting like a 3-year old (Not ranting at you specifically innocent RUclipsr)

Nice distro, but I can't Gnome. My dream distro would be Solus Budgie with features from Pop!_OS.
Nice to see more videos and reviews about the Thelio linux machine :D
awesome vid. Would love to see y'all talk about running an e-gpu on a Linux pc.
Anyone know a shortcut to bring up the terminal in Pop OS? I don't think it's the same as Ubuntu.
System76 needs to sell those amazing looking pc cases separately cause I need one in my life right now. Screw generic black or glass boxes with enough rgb to induce an epileptic fit give me a nice minimalist design and throw in hand crafted wood in there.
I was thinking about changing my Linux mint system to Pop os
Ok... go on...
Why and what are you currently running?
@@z0phi3l Linux mint because uses only LTS so little dated on things
I set up Linux Mint for an elderly disabled friend about two years ago, when he got his new PC. He seems quite happy with it.
I like that ending. Wendell just casually pointed out that Linux has surpassed Windows in a rather important way.
I have an Oryx Pro 4, awesome machine, very no-nonsense and well supported.
KISS means much reading, understanding and REMEMBERING. GUI was invented to bypass CLI, bypass RTFM, and then have time over for some real fun.
I need a GUI because otherwise I can't browse the modern (very unpleasant) web (and no, w3m or lynx is not enough)
the most suprising part of this suprising intro, was that i expected it
Anyone know the intro music of this video?
Would you mind going over Tuxedo OS as well?
I can't wait for the next Captain Picard day. Had so much fun at the last one.
I just hit the bell, thx for a great post mate.
i love seeing htop with that many threads
Pop OS does some magic gnome shit to such an extent that it's so far the only borderline plug'n'play distro I've found for my obscure gaming laptop.
Optimus works out of the box
Well looks like I'll be loading this into my SFF linux box to tinker around, still love hearing Linux and gaming in the same sentence too.
I dunno about all this...
At 11:25 something went really wonky with my colors. Brown became light blue... I haven't figured it out yet.

Big ups for mentioning RMS and the deal with the devil!
Any Idea on how to configure the NVDIA driver to use two GTX1050 GPUs? It seems that the xorg.conf file is missing.
nice ... i like that htop running on the machine.
Screen tearing is the biggest pain in the ass to fix for nvidia users specially newer hardware.
I am unable to boot into PopOS after installation on my Intel nuc. How can I resolve this problem?
Is it necessary to create a /boot/efi partition to install alongside windows 10 legacy mode?
First link in description takes us to page that says "Oops! That page doesn't exist or is private".
I run Pop!_OS on my Asus i7 laptop and it is fantastic. I plan to change the desktop to the same.
Looking forward to see how you get around the iommu group problem assigned to those first two pcie slots on the Designare x399.
it's odd ive tried 15v and 17 v intel and on hd install blank my drive it failed after trying to set up 1 uefi system and one none . achi mode for drives while 18.04.2 based Supergamer works off the bat for me ssd and nvme . used live mode gparted / as drive no swap where as 18.04 works with my stuff.
System 76 seems they have good pc, but a little expensive for me,
Huh. On my laptop I've resorted to just keeping the Nvidia gpu always on... Idk if it's worth it to give up the AUR though...
I switched to Pop a month ago and so far it was a good decision
Does it have support for other language input methods, or different keyboard layouts? How is it done? Is it the same as Ubuntu?
Is there a way to get my rift to work with pop os ?
Nice snippit of info at the end there bud! Sounds like you 're on the case. ^___-
Does it have a working IME, that works for Japanese on a US keyboard, with a customizable keyboard shortcut (not like IBus where it is Shift+Super+Space, instead of Super+Space as the documentation states, with no working option to change it)? The built-in IME in Windows just works, but each Linux IME that I have tried has one or more unresolved issues.
The intel management engine is stripped from their machines
why need steam pre-installed if most of the time we need to update it afterwards?
Stallman looks like Negan on a bad day
The best video so far.
Did anyone else using popos 19.04 have shutdown issues when using vfio gpu passthrough? Mine will hang and freeze when doing a shutdown or restart of the host system.
I remember seeing Pop!-Manjaro hybrid distro. It felt pretty awkward at first.
what can u link me to it? Sounds just the kind of thing I'd love lol!
b888 Dang. I tried finding it, but it's as if it evaporated off the Net.

Would pop os be compatible with KDE plasma?
I'd love a video with comprehensive tests and comparison of FPS AND stuttering between Windows bare bones, and Windows VM, that'd be great
I just tried it a couple of days ago and the scaling is ass on my tv unless I do 720p
Hello, thanks for the information. Pop linux installation does not recognize the disks, Please help me. Regars
Yes and no
I am that gamer who wants things to just work, but more importantly, I want choice
I have no choice when it comes to the Management Engine and that infuriates me, I use a 10-year old laptop that hopefully one day soon I will get around to Corebooting
But I am also incensed by how RMS and his ideology operate
I choose coreboot over libreboot because libreboot removes my choice to use a discrete graphics card-coreboot does not
I refuse to use PureOS or Distros like it that make it difficult to use proprietary software that I CHOOSE to use- such as steam
Forcing users into sacrificing usability for the sake of the developers "higher principles" is hypocritical
When Purism comes out with a quad core model of their laptop-you bet your bottom dollar I'll buy it, heck I want to buy the librem 5
Maybe I'm wrong about RMS and such, I will never actually tried GNU or PureOS, merely looked into the software and saw mentions of difficulty adding non free repos or software and that's all I needed
Also RMS comes across as a little petty demanding I refer to it as GNU/Linux...it's more accurate sure, but on GNU's website it goes on about how we were here before Linus and we gave him inspiration
Grow TF up, you've been eclipsed, be happy that you are a part of history, stop acting like a 3-year old
(Not ranting at you specifically innocent RUclipsr)
@@ryanwallace983 no worries, I basically agree with you. We need advocates but RMS definitely has taken it too far more than once.
How good is the gtx 1660ti for someone who is learning machine learning? Or should I just go with the rtx 2060?
pop bang as in the cap flying off off the pop bottle
3:20 I tried today to launch Pop_OS! 19.04 on my Dell XPS 15 9570, but I can't get it to to prompt anything after selecting the boot entry on the BIOS. But Linux 5.0 on Manjaro cannot see the NVIDIA GPU in lspci and Linux418 does see it but cannot set the powerstate to to ON with bbswitch, bumblebee, nvidia-xrun and all that stuff. Still looking for the magical solution but Pop_OS! looks promissing
Edit : Only boot in Legacy Mode
