    That is true about cummins they currently change there system and only build to order. If you live in south ga and you need truck parts check out telfair truck and trailer ask for rusty very honest place they overhaul on credit as well. Anytime something fail on cooling sytem or engine always get injectors check. True business owner knows qhen it time to walk away but regain strength and start again be bless and safe on the road

    These crappy DEF/EGR trucks with new school Diesels lead only to ruin. I see it all the time, guys up a creek because their Cascadia won’t work, with D̶e̶t̶r̶o̶i̶t̶ ̶D̶i̶e̶s̶e̶l̶ Mercedes DD15 or finicky Cummins X motor. Nobody wants to encounter problems of course, so a lot of guys buy the newer junk thinking it will treat them better, but it never does.
    Older (pre-2001) trucks are investments, the newer trucks - and their engines, are throwaway, which is why they’re quickly chucked after the warranty is done. There is good reason a huge portion of successful owner-ops have these old rigs with good solid pre-emission Diesels. It’s because they make money, instead of taking expensive shits on the side of the road, and they’re cheaper to fix anyway.
    You’re not touching California freight with a ten-foot pole with these trucks of course, but that’s a small thing. Never be afraid of old equipment, just get educated on what you’re working with, any owner should be anyway.

      I got a 2000 FLD with a Series 60 12.7l bought a in-frame for $1600 and helped a local diesel mechanic and I'm good for awhile but i won't be satisfied until i do a complete out of frame overhaul!...but all in all good buy she's clean but with a little elbow grease from me and the misses she's clean inside and out!

    • @mr.butterworth
      @mr.butterworth 5 лет назад +1

      Nathaniel Bolden - The most important part of preventative maintenance on the Series 60 is making sure the bullgear (and its bearings) are healthy, very crucial! Recommended replacement for this part is 800,000 miles on the 12.7. Take care of that, and you have one of the best motors on the road. Good luck!

    We pay penske $1900 a month for full service leases. It's a great deal. I don't know how penske makes money. We had one truck need a transmission, rear end, and one-box within 6 months. A freightliner cascadia one-box is 20k by itself. Penske provides a sub unit within hours of a truck being down.
    Being a owner op with an emissions truck is rolling the dice. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.

    Lots of better places to go than dealers. Call around to truck salvage yards, lots of times they have good shops. I have a Mexican guy about 2 miles from me that I buy used parts from, he has a fleet of heavy wreckers all beautiful. I saw him build a couple of them from the ground up using mostly salvage parts, they look almost like show trucks. Dealership mechanics are a far cry from what they used to be

      Im an owner op and have done the same thing. It gets overwhelming sometimes and its best to walk away and take a breather. 34k in just the motor i would rather put a down payment a good truck with warranty and that down truck can be fixed meanwhile and eventually have two trucks( meanwhile i mean over at least 6months to a year). Plus best wait for the rebuilt parts then a whole motor. We lose some to win some. Sometimes you have to walk away for a bit. Nothing stops a hard working man

  • @prevost8686
    @prevost8686 5 лет назад +2

    It may sound oversimplified but it’s truth. “If you can quit, you need to quit.” Running a business requires a commitment today that many aren’t willing to give. I’ve been in business for myself and I know what I’m talking about. I just started another one and I’m getting close to the age when a lot of guys are thinking retirement. Before I stepped out in this last venture I had to have a serious examination of myself. I’m in it to the death. I’m going to make it or die trying. If I’ve got to eat beans & taters, wear Salvation Army clothes, and hock every toy that I don’t have to have that’s what I’m going to do. Cell phones, car payments, eating out, and vacations are all expendable to me.
    I failed in my first business venture and in retrospect I got nobody to blame but me. I wanted all the benefits of being my own boss but I wasn’t ready to put the blood,sweat, and tears that it takes to make it float. It was all on me and I’ve learned from those mistakes.
    Anyone can quit and I’ve been guilty of it myself in the past but I ain’t going out that way...even if it kills me.
    I know this sounds crazy but you need to watch the documentary on Evil Keneville’s life. The man absolutely would not quit. His story is something worth the time to listen to. Lastly, lick your wounds, have an honest conversation with the man in the mirror, and get back on your horse. You may not know it but I promise you there’s at least one young buck watching your life and will emulate the traits he sees in you. I wish you the best.

    I've read all the comments here. Tough situation for sure! But i just have a few questions: So you were having a overheating problem and didn't stop the truck right away? It would be rather odd that the injector would have leaked that much diesel to dilute the oil so badly- Could have been the main cause of overheating- and fast that you didn't notice that your oil was diluted with diesel by doing your daily P.T.I.??? I was always on top of my truck condition. Would be MORE so if it was mine.

    I went through the exact same thing when starting a trucking business. Went broke twice, lost both trucks in the process. Long story but same story. Now I own three and still going though hard times. 20 years in so I’m no rookie but the business is hard on owner ops. Found that it’s a mental thing that strikes most drivers down. Every situation, it’s always a multi way bad luck streak, so it seems. Bad load, bad market, truck problems that can’t afford to get fixed until it breaks. On top of personal bills and responsibilities. It’s a hard life but it’s an honest living. Keep pushing bro.

    I just found your channel and you are so right living for God not to please everyone's thoughts on things. I am just looking into going to US Express to lease my first truck and I always teamed with my husband but unfortunately he can't drive right now and we started a dispatching and trucking business of course the trucking side was not going to be right away we were just going to work on the Dispatching but it was right before the pandemic hit and we have not made anything doing that so that is why I decided to lease for now and train new women drivers only. I have decided to train women because I know when I first started it was hard to find a woman trainer and I want to help because I had a boss one time tell me to never forget your first day and I believe too many drivers do forget how nervous they were at first and I can't stand some trainers becoming a trainer just to line thier pockets. I pray you and your family are doing good through this pandemic, God Bless you and your family.

    When you are on the road you are at the mercy of people you know nothing about. I know quite a bit about turning wrenches but I am not a mechanic, I just learned to work on my own stuff starting back in the 50s and 60s. As it were, I probably would have made the same choice you did about just pulling the plug on that truck. Maybe, if you had bought that truck when it was new and knew about it's history and had made money with it in its prime, that's one thing. But, as you said, you bought it pretty cheap, made money with it, and the salvage value is worth less than just putting together a new rig.
    Thanks for sharing your story. Praise God from whom all blessings flow.

    Only engine Warranty won’t help you my uncle got a truck from lone mountain second week injector went and flooded the engine . He towed it to Freightliner the engine was covered under warranty he only had to pay 5k for towing and shop supplies for engine rebuild and he paid that upfront but after couple of days he called the dealership to check dealer said because of bad injector there might be fuel in the def system which could cause a fire 🔥 they cannot do the repairs unless you change the whole def system for 20k . They also call the lone mountain so lone mountain stop them to release the truck with out repairs. He had to give up lose his credit and bunch of money 💴 in this . I would say if possible buy a old non emission truck and build it front to back or buy new and keep till factory warranty runs out and then trade it for new one.

    If u can afford 15 grand find the rebuild kit on your own. Have them do labor or take it elsewhere. Just a suggestion. I know exactly where you're at I went through this my first go round in trucking. It was a very stressful time. Keep your head up your time will come

    Bro, your situation sounds like what i went through with my truck and i let my business go 3 years ago. Towards the end i was really frustrated and i had alot of stress that came with my truck. You do what best for you and your family who cares what other people say what you should have done.

  • @Jabows1020

    Cool vid. Sorry about your truck and having to deactivate your Authority. BUT, my question for you is, why didn’t you look online to find the inframe/rebuild kit and either mail it to the shop or mail it to yourself and take it to the shop yourself?! You “probably” could have found an inframe kit with the crankcase for around or less than $4-5k. Inframe kits for the ISX generally run around $2500-$3000 online. Anyway, you could’ve bought your own parts and have the shop put it in. The only thing is they WONT or can’t cover or guarantee the parts because it didn’t come from their shop but they’ll guarantee the work. This way you save a lot of money and your truck would’ve been back up and running with a new inframe/rebuild. Best of luck.

    Bigfella I had the same problem with my 07 Freightliner it had a C15 CAT Accert. They wanted $22000 to fix it or $42000 for a REMAN. So I junked it for $5000 thinking I would just get a different truck big mistake. I should have put the truck in storage until I could fix it. And this is moral of the story if I would have fixed that truck it would still been my truck I could have done anything I wanted to do with it even sell it.But getting a new truck I wouldn't have owned it and could have went through the same problem again I really fu*kup

      I been through a few Acert engines. Once you are familiar with them you know what to look for. I like them. Some say parts are expensive, but aren't they all?
      Lot of people don't care for the Acert series. They're known for oil cooler, pre cooler, water pump leaking back into the oil pan( often giving a shady repair shop the opportunity to stick you for a head job should you not know), low pressure turbo taking out the high pressure turbo with it, exhaust stud/ gasket failures. Each brand has its own issues.

      @@jmh4ggg Acert seems to been more prone to issues than any other Cat Engine. There's been multiple class action lawsuits on the Acert series. Caterpilar hid the defects from consumers. Caterpillar has bought out entire fleets of trucks with Acert engines.
      Some were fortunate like you.

    Don't let it keep you down, broth. If you can, take the money that you'd put into an inframe, and buy another truck. Take the profits and then invest into your other truck. Then, when that truck is running 100%, switch into that 100% truck and take the profits and either reinvest into the 2nd truck or sell the 2nd truck outright. Remember, give up, never surrender.

    I don’t understand everything but at some time the engine light should of came on. I got a Cummins and engine lights come on and tells me what’s wrong or tell me to stop engine or check engine. Trucks don’t over heat without a reason. ALL DRIVERS STOP GOING TO SHAED TREE MECHANICS THEY AE PARTS CHANGERS SOMETIMES YOU MUST TAKE YOUR TRUCK TO A DEALERSHIP, THEY HAVE A DIFFERENT LEVEL OF COMPUTER. And if you was checking your oil everyday you would had seen the oil and diesel mixture. Anyway, live and learn and good luck.

    I just had a similar situation. I already put $30k in repairs. They want another $21k to replace the entire fuel system. Fuck all that. I'm trying to sell it to the dealer. If that don't work and I have to pay it I'm selling it right after. I'm in a rental truck trying to figure out how to do this high ass payment. I'm not gonna give up my authority because the time starts over again.
