So sorry to hear about the loss of your ducks. I love ducks, they are adorable. Rachel, your hair looks great back. I agree with you about the heat feeling like 150 degrees. I cannot stand heat, and heat and humidity kills my asthma. I am so grateful that live in the Northeast, and have air conditioning in my house. My cats love it too. The emu's are doing really well. Poor Mojo, it is too hot for him to eat. Leeske is smart to go in the pond. He is training Kora well. Stay as cool as you can. Prayers for rain for you. I didn't take your vlog as a gripe video. It is just hot and dry weather. It has to get better. 🙏🙏🙏🙏

My folks had ducks back in the day. They do better in the cooler temps (even winter.)
You're doing good with the water. Maybe supplement with "mint" ice cubes. Just freeze some mint in the ice cubes and add those to the pool for a good summer treat. They also do better with veggies like peas, green beans and lettuce. Chasing peas in the pool is fun for the ducks and fun to watch!

I know a lot of people are saying this, but I do see other farms using mist for cooling down their animals. The other suggestion is the fans hanging in the barn giving them a little air circulation. We live in Georgia and definitely can sympathize on the heat and high humidity. We are now in the storm cycles. Hot humid weather, triggering some big storms, daily. Praying for you all!

A mister fan can lower the temp by 20 degrees F. Whether a fan with a mister or just a mister, the animals will be able to cool off a little. No other idea unless you wanted to go all fancy & add an air conditioner to the barn. Daniel at Arms family homestead put a solar powered ac in their cabin.

Maybe the water is heating up too fast for ducks. I read they need cold water. They suggest putting ice or frozen water bottles in their pools, give them electrolytes and watch for signs of heat stroke which kills ducks during extreme heat.

HI Heights Family, Sorry for your loss, I think the ducks are dying because the heat, you guys are doing your best, i was born in Africa so i know what heat is, I've lived in 40, 45 up to 55 degrees celsius nine month of a year, You are not doing anything wrong but poultry are very sensitive are can drop death without showing symtoms. I still see some of the water containers under the sun and thats not good, just one water container in the sun is enough to cause much damage, that water will be boiling just within 30minutes and ofcos the animal will not know and drink it which will burn their throats and might be why some animal will not eat well as before because they have burn mouth and tongue.
Keep doing what you are doing, God bless you all

Goodmorning folks I totally understand what your going through.
We had to set up sprinklers in our pastures and when the animals were brought up to the small paddocks we used misting hoses hung on the shelter sheds . We also would make popsicles with apples and carrots in one gallon ice cream buckets . Please take care and hoping for rain for you all. God bless.

Last year in Oregon we had a stretch over 100 degrees, and my chickens just couldn't take it and I lost several. We set up a spray/sprinkle system too, which seemed to help in the shade. But then again out here, we just aren't used to that heat for more than a day or two. Sorry about your ducks. You might throw some ice blocks into the water pools, or literally in a baby size pool. My animals did like that a lot.

I live near Death Valley. The misters are a God send. Grain can make the animals run hotter. I have " cooling stations" with fans, iced water, and dampened earth tjat I dampen at night. The hay on tbe ground seems to hold/generate heat like compost. Best of luck, the struggle is real!

I was born and raised in South Central New Mexico, and what's crazy (but also really good for them) is that they've been getting quite a bit of rain recently. This is the monsoon season for them which actually started early this year. It usually starts around July 4th, but this year started in early June. They've been getting two or three days a week with rain showers, which is great considering how usually during monsoon season, it's more like once or twice every two weeks. So it's been a blessing for them. My grandmother sent me a picture recently, and I haven't seen it that green since I was maybe 5 or 6 years old, so almost 20 years. But in Middle Tennessee near Nashville (where my grandfather lives), they've also been dealing with the same issues that y'all are having. Extreme heat and humidity with no rain. I think they've had one day with a tiny bit of rain that was barely even measurable in the past 30 days. And they are used to getting a decent amount of rain at least once a week or so. His yard is also getting crunchy and turning brown which is very abnormal for them. I remember when I lived there having to go out and mow the yard at least once a week, sometimes more. But he hasn't had to worry about mowing for quite a while now. I just mention this to say it's really weird how the weather seems to be reversed this year for different parts of the country. My home/birthtown in NM getting a lot more rain than usual, and the town I grew up in in TN having a crazy drought. To really hit it home, every time I've visited NM for the past 15 years or so, I don't remember a time where there wasn't a strict fire ban everywhere. Now they have taken down the bans completely in a lot of areas. And every 4th of July in TN I remember being able to shoot off any kind of firework you can imagine, but this year they decided to ban anything that gets off the ground. It just seems so backwards. Anyway, I hope y'all get some relief here soon.

A few suggestions are feed Mojo on the front porch temporarily so he can stay in the shade on the somewhat cooler concrete, a long length water mister in the goat yard, water bowls under shade, bricks or rocks in low water bowls for the bees and birds. Hoping you receive rain and cooler temperatures soon!

It may look funky, but with thrift store bed sheets, draperies, and comforters you can provide additional immediate shade and relief at a relatively inexpensive cost. Yes, direct shade for the animals but also shade for the ground space and dirt below the grass which by now is likely hot. The dirt on top no longer has the capability to draw up moisture from lower levels, the lower levels are likely heating up and drying out, and the whole eco-system of soil microbes which help the ground stay cool and moist is drying out and dying for the year. Driving a stake down into the ground adequate to suspend shade cloth, be it a bed sheet or other, for a goat pen will not be easy. Do consider getting your tallest ladder to string shade cloth from the trees and under the tree canopy. Do consider stringing shade cloth from fencing in the areas the goats can't get to. Do consider stringing shade cloth from the eaves of your barn, shed, and similar structures to help the siding remain cooler; as mentioned in earlier comments, structure siding off heats keeping the surrounding areas hotter than they would be elsewise. Do consider how to keep rock, cement, and brick areas surrounding your animals shaded so they don't heat up. Do consider using cold water to help cool down the things that absorb heat then off heat into the surrounding areas; often there is a cycle in which off heating occurs keeping things warm but hit fully before the next day's sun comes along.

Kevin and Rachel, you guys are impressive. I couldn't do all that you do. As for the weather, it's been a weird summer so far. Our garden is suffering.

Were in a drought as well in Wyoming some parts worse then others. We've been having 90+ Temps. I've been getting up at 3 am to water the garden and it's still in the 70's.
Praying for for a nice steady rain for 3 days n no bad storms.

Dealing with it here in Southern Missouri. We got some Guinea Fowl, planned on getting chickens and start a garden, but after the constant day after day drought it's just not smart to do. I feel for you all. I looks like no rain for 2 weeks. I'm scared we will burn up due to everything being so dry. All it would take is a few dumb people to spark it off or a few lightning strikes. It will take quite a bit of rain at this point to prevent a fire. Ill keep watching you all and see what works when this kinda heat hits. I think we got less than 1/10 of an inch within the last 2 months.
Yall are probably 2 hours from me so I love to see what's going on west of me.

We are having similar temps here in the Ozarks. I cut my grass two months ago and haven't had to recut it like we have last year and the year prior. It is very very dry here and the little bit of rain (0.1 inch for last 2 months) and we have been informed by local volunteer FD that we are on a wildfire warning. Keeping our dogs inside in the AC, and the AC is struggling to fight back the heat.
Neighbor's Cayuga ducks were having heat stroke this past month, even with a pond and plenty of water, shade, and feed available. They set up a sprinkler on a timer for the ducks and livestock to enjoy. Early morning, twice in the afternoon (until the county puts daytime water limitations) and once in the evening. The ducks are doing better, the grass there is still good, their chickens and a few of the older cows they have are staying near the area as well.

We are in Mountain Grove Missouri and know you're not lying about this drought.
I'm really worried about a wild fire from some terd sparking something or flicking a cigarette. Lightning strikes are another worry. I'm a former fire fighter myself and I just see this getting super super bad! May god be with you and your family, ty for what you do, especially in this heat!

Sorry for the loss of the ducks. It's sad seeing how brown the grass is this early.

Hi Ya'll, I reside here in Hot Florida, and we put on a lawn sprinkler on our hose and use a timer to let out water a few times a day so our ducks can help stay a bit cooler besides having a few kiddy pools to swim in. Good luck my friends.

Fans in the barns it's a definite help. Goats wouldn't like a mist hose but maybe the other animals would? We've been in the High 90s with heat index over a 100 for weeks here too. We finally, finally got rain this morning. A surprise storm dropped 2 inches very very fast, A lot ran off but some soaked in.
I pray this weather pattern changes soon !

Summer is rough! We live in Northern California, our climate is very close to yours. While it is dryer most of the time, we have three major rivers in the delta which creates humidity that can be pretty miserable. Several years ago our state fair put in cooling stations with a fine mist of water that is a real life saver! Before you knew it they were available for your yard, animals and people. It's just a very fine mist and uses less water than a sprinkler.

About dust control - Once its dusty, all you can do is spray water similarly to how they spray construction sites with a water tanker truck. The sad part is that dust tends to begin with all of your top soil. Aside from your top layers of soil being dry and prone to being blown about by even slight air movement, it is an indicator that the lower levels are also drying out and unable to hold the soil structure in tact. Often, this also results in the soil not being able to absorb or take in water once it rains; especially if younget a volume of water versus a gentle drizzle. If you get warning about rain, do consider watering your dry ground and brown grass a little before the rain somthst the water doesn't just run off the surface without honestly watering the ground.

This draught is happening across the country. I worry for all that are so dependent on rain for their animals and produce. I live in PA and it is not normal to have brown grass in July. We haven’t had rain in a really long time. Prayers that rain comes to you soon.
