    I recently commented on a social media post about Americans only enjoying fish and chips in London and I’ll say the same here on behalf of all Britons.
    If you’re an American wanting to visit Britain and at some point try fish and chips, instead of going into London from your arriving flight at Heathrow Airport, get on a train to either the South West coast of the counties Devon Dorset or Cornwall, or up north to the Yorkshire coast.
    The fish and chips in these seaside locations are far better than anything in London, and with all likelihood, cheaper.

    • @kanedaku
      @kanedaku 2 месяца назад +1

      I'm 100% a Londoner and I 100% agree with you. The proper fish and chips shops no longer go to Billingsgate every day like when I was a nipper, and theres two many gastropubs and nouveau fish bars selling fusion meals. Harry Ramsdens in Brighton is better than most fish and chip places in London. There are odd ones dotted around in South London that I would recommend though, but pricey.

    • @SvenTviking
      @SvenTviking 2 месяца назад

      Because you’ve been to every fish and chip shop in the entirety of London. 🙄

    • @kanedaku
      @kanedaku 2 месяца назад +1

      @@SvenTviking I'm a born and bred Londoner and will defend it til I die, but you do realise that any fish eaten in London will be _at least_ a day old? Its caught wherever, brought down to London for 2 or 3am to sell at Billingsgate fish market, then so the earliest you'll get to eat it would be 24 hours after it was caught, thats near enough a minimum since its been caught to when its in front of you.
      If you want the freshest fish here, go to Billingsgate yourself and cook it the same day, although you'll have to get there before 5am. Later than that and you'll miss the best stuff.

    It does _not_ rain in London as often as you think. You get more annual rainfall in NYC (1258mm), New Orleans (1609mm) or Orlando (1307mm) than London (1154mm). London has about a third of the average annual rainfall of the UK as a whole owing to the fact that the rest of the country "soaks up" the rain before it reaches London.

    • @kanedaku
      @kanedaku 2 месяца назад

      Unfortunately, you've got the wrong formula. Rainfall duration isnt measured in volume. It rains a lot in London, because of that bloody seas we're so close to, but its that crappy drizzle we get sometimes constantly in winter. So while it may not be as much as those other places, whom which tends to have storms when it rains - we do have extended periods in London where it rains for maybe three days straight.

    I watched Evan's original video and wasn't impressed by his friends' lacklustre response to his tour. He tried so hard to engage them! Were they expecting the Empire State Building, a Giza Pyramid and the Hanging Gardens of Babylon in one tour? What would they be impressed by? To be fair, Evan was doing this on a budget and the weather sure didn't help. Correct me if I'm wrong, I think they are from Finland? I'd like to see them give Evan a budget tour of Helsinki and show him similar sights (no offence to Helsinki - I have never been there) but I'm not sure they could match London's history, food culture, architecture, theatre etc etc. And I'm sure the weather wouldn't be too different!

    So I don't carry one around in my hand all the time (unless it's actually raining as I leave the house). But I do have an umbrella in the bag. Just in case.
    Always keep an "emergency umbrella" in your work bag, in case it starts pelting it down from nowhere.
    But, as a Brit, if it's just a light drizzle then we just walk through it with no shits given. As I like to say, if Brits stopped because it was raining, then we'd never have gotten anything done ever.

    I thinknI'm right that it is a building reg in London that all buildings over a certain size have to have a communal space - creating a sky garden is much more interesting than a huge foyer. You don't just have to look at the outside of a building, you can go inside all the tourist spots as well e.g. Buckingham Palace and Gardens; Houses of Parliament; Tower Bridge; St Paul's etc. - they just didn't have time.

    JJ you did _not_ hear Evan say "Chis_wick"!! Its spelt Chiswick but pronounced Chissick...
    Ditto Southwark is pronounced 'Suthuk'
    Leicester is pronounced 'Lester'
    'Quay' is pronounced 'key' (it's a dock / jetty)
    Westminster is _not_ pronounced
    Westminister. (A 'Minster' is a church, _not a Minister_ , which we call a 'Reverend' / 'Vicar' - _Anglican_ / 'C_of_E', or a
    'Priest' - _Roman Catholic_ .) ...
    'Cock Lane' might have its origins in either a 'cock-fighting' (cock pit) betting area... _Or_ from an area of brothels - for obvious reasons!
    'Joolz Guides' can explain more fully the names of London's streets, buildings and street furniture - such as old cannons being turned into street bollards, etc). I think, JJ, if you haven't yet watched any of Joolz' videos of walking guides in and around London, you really ought to, he us entertaining, amusing, educational, interesting and well-worth watching...
    I promise.

    "When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford.” Samuel Johnson. Cock Lane is famous for the Cock Lane ghost, and scratching fanny, Johnson was involved in that. Look it up. Most roads in this part of London are named after the trade that done in that part of London. It could be cock fighting, then it was known to have a lot of brothels.

    Definitely Buckingham Palace isn't worth going out of your way for - if you're in the area, then sure stop and take a snap- but definitely not the focus of your trip. The same goes for Leicester Square, which seems to be on a list of places tourists have heard of. You only need to go there to use the Theatre Ticket Booth which has some good on-the-day deals for lots of West End Shows - or to attend a film premiere, if that's something you're invited to.
    On a good weather day I'd recommend the walk between Westminster Bridge ( by the Houses of Parliament) along the South Bank as far as Borough Market (which is worth seeing) then crossing Tower Bridge, taking in The Tower of London, then heading somewhere like Brick Lane to finish off.

    I honestly haven't really bothered with umbrellas for years. Unless it's raining heavily enough, it just blow up under the umbrella anyway lol.
    I remember taking one out a few years ago when it was banging down, and it blew inside out and the metal bands snapped.
    Went into the closest shop to buy a replacement, but it was faulty as the the main umbrella bit shot off (i can only assume it's still in orbit)
    I stick with my hoodies and commit to just getting soaked 🤣
